In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

They should have done this much earlier, what they need to do is take about 200 very high up Dems to Hillary's and tell her to GET OUT YOU LOST!

Little problem in your premise. Hillary didn't lose. She tied: that's if you care about democracy. Now if you care about backroom deals and the good ol' boys club and if you believe that might makes right, then, yes, he's won. Just admit though that you'd rather not follow the democratic principles.

"Democratic principles"? I thought Hillary and her cohorts did not believe in anything democratic, such as bragging about victory in a Soviet era-like "election". Only in the fantasy land where she and you live did she tie. Sorry, but don't take your fantasies and delusions for reality. Your awakening could be catastrophic when you are faced with reality.

If the Republicans were not so demoralized, or if they had a viable candidate, these slow moving Democratic leaders would have lost the election by now. As it is, they've turned a sure win into a toss up.

Putting Hillary on the ticket would energize the Republicans and make yet another election that the Democrats should have won into a loss. Hillary and the supers have botched this to the point that Hilary as VP, or even visible in the campaign, is not a winning possibility.

Dragging this out even another week will also make this election that should be a win into a loss.

Condew, I'm surprised and glad to see someone else point out what I have in various blogs. The right-wing hate for the Clintons borders on the unnatural and would energize their party. This is a great chance for a huge change in this country that should not be wasted. Besides, with Hillary inc. running a totally right-wing campaign against Obama, she has shown her true colors and doesn't merit the consideration for any high position in his administration anyway. She should go back to the senate, be a leader and hopefully help spearhead some of the many changes I hope will be coming thru when he is president.

And IF the "dream ticket" did win, it could be a real problem. Obama et al would wind up wasting time trying to counter the Clinton's actions. I certainly don't think either of the Clinton's will play second fiddle to Obama. It could wind up being a very, very difficult Administration to do well, make the changes so many Americans are hoping for, and then get re-elected.

For some reason "the great campaign that Hillary ran" is front and center. If it were a horse race, and if the 10 t0 1 dark horse beat the 1-10 favorite by a nose, the story would be all about the spunk and tenacity of the win. But why should we fret about this? How often do we get to see the losing horse continuing to charge around the track, while its bettors stomp and wave their tickets?

I"m not exactly sure what Hillyary is up to. I just checked out her Web site and she's encouraging her supporters to "stand with her." Maybe she'll come out and say, "10 million of my supporters want me to fight this all the way to the convention." But having tried unsuccessfully to post on the site several times, I can tell you this: There's no such thing as free speech on hillaryclinton.com. There's no doubt that a lot of her supporters want her to have a floor fight at the convention. But I'm sure there are plenty who don't want to see this election go to McCain. Hence, this site is hardly a reflection of what people who cast votes for Clinton want. I hope reporters covering this race will take note of this if she does try to stay in the race using the comments from her Web site as justification.

Typical of the Obama supporters. Somehow you recognize that there's no compelling reason that Hillary supporters would be for Obama, so you turn to the anti-McCain argument. Perhaps you realize that Obama has proven to be against everything we believe in: in this case, democracy, as calls for party elders to put her down (evident here0 suggest that his supporters don't believe in.

Can you imagine if she were President and had to spend days sulking when things didn't go her way? I'm getting tired of Obama supporters being the only ones taking the high road, although I understand it. But I am so over Hillary...I hope she & Bill spend millions more of their own money instead of taking it from little kids and the elderly if she wants to take her fight to Denver. I am so disgusted. Blackmailing her way to unity....well, let her get deeper in debt trying.

The rules for these primaries need to be revised:

1) No Superdelegates. They invite mischief, and are too cowardly to act when they need to. Always too little, too late.

2) A sore looser rule, informally known as the "Hillary Rule" to automatically disqualify a candidate in 24 hours when winning becomes a mathematical impossibility and the candidate refuses to concede.

The supers were created to fix problems, but their existence created the Hillary problem. She will always argue that they could change their minds, so she'll never concede. No spineless, wimpy supers, no Hillary problem.

Here's plan B:

When Obama is sworn in as President of the United States in January 2009, Hillary will carry her own Bible to the event and mouth the oath of office., thereby claiming the office. She still has a key to the front door of the White House and she knows how to use it.

I thought she didn't have a Plan B. She did. Here is it.

1. Try to take Obama down. If that fails...
2. Muck up the Democratic party so it is irreparably damaged, then...
3. Join McCain on his ticket and unify her supporters and McCain's against the newly weakened Democratic party.

I think Obama and all of us are strong enough to take on McCain/Clinton. Let's get on with it.

This is exactly what I think she will do. She does not appear to care at all for the Democratic party. She will say or do anything to meet her own needs. It is always about Hillary to Hillary. So- if she is on McCain's ticket, I will not be the least bit surprised. Lieberman has already paved the way...

Hahaha, I hope she does. Talk about a blow out. They wouldn't have a prayer of winning. The Republican base would run from McCain so fast. There's no way in hell they'd ever support that ticket. They hate Clinton more than Obama supporters do. I'd love to see Sean Hannity's, Rush Limbaugh's, and Mark Levin's faces when they heard that announcement. Rush would blow gasket. They barely tolerate McCain now, if he picked Clinton they'd turn on him like you couldn't believe.

This would be the best thing that could happen to Obama, since Hillary has basically run her campaign as though she is a republican. Then there is the Goldwater connection of McCain assuming his seat and Hillary being one of his gals. It would be a match made in heaven or hell, depending on one's perspective.

Obama would then be free to run against both entrenched Democrat and republican establishment at the same time.

If Bush can congratulate obama, how the hell can she not say. As of today Sen Obama is our nominee, however i will need to see where i go from here. McCain gave an appalling speech last night, and Hillary has taken the headlines from that and STILL is putting pressure on Obama to do things her way.

Clinton tool Lanny Davis is starting a petition drive to pressure Obama to make her VP. If he does now--he'll look weak, even if its his own choice.

If he doesn't, her "18 million voters" will be told they're being "ignored" and "disenfranchised".

I've never seen such divisive opportunism (and suspicious level of coordination with the Republican opponent) in 50 years. Everything she does seems designed to weaken Obama and strengthen McCain. It really no longer seems coincidental.

She's created this mess by lying.

Her supporters write on her website that the DNC rules committee threw the election to Obama. I have no idea how they arrive at that arithmetic.

They believe the caucus states stole the nomination from Hillary. Nothing to back that up, either.

They believe the 18 million votes.

It's the MSM's fault because they do not challenge her surrogates enough when they spew these lines on television.

If there was any question that for Hillary it's all about HER, this is the smoking gun. She is an incredibly egotistical, self centered person.

Obama needs to cut the legs out from under her by naming one of the female Democratic governors as his Vice Presidential candidate. Governor Granholm, who has been a Hillary supporter if possible.

Granholm is arguably ineligible, not having been born in the United States. I say arguably because she is ineligible to run for the presidency. The constitution is less clear about the vice presidency. Still, since vice presidents can become presidents, Granholm is unlikely to push the issue in the face of constitutional ambiguity. Besides, Michigan's economy being weak--- though not Granholm's fault (for that I blame NAFTA and GATT)--- makes Granholm damaged goods.

That's why we're hearing so much about Kathleen Sebelius.

As others have pointed out, Granholm wasn't born a US citizen so cannot become president, hence can't be VP. And even if she was, would you REALLY want the idiot who signed off on the Michigan primary fiasco as VP?

He'd be better crossing party lines and picking Alaska's Gov. Sarah Palin, if McCain doesn't beat him to it.

The worst thing Obama can do is to give in to the pressure by the Hillary alocites to make her his Vice-Presidential candidate. All that will accomplish is that it will make him look weak. Defyining Hillary and naming one of the female Democratic governors as his Vice Presidential candidate, on the other hand, will help establish him as a strong, decisive leader.
