In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

There's Obama and the Democratic Platform: Health Care, War in Iraq, Social Security, Environment, Oil Prices, Iran, Jobs, Immigration, etc.

There's Hillary and the Hillary Platform: Hillary always and only

She doesn't want Obama to win if she couldn't have the top slot I feel. I've always felt this. She won't do it overtly but she will do her best to keep the party divided and try to damage him so that he losses and then she could either have another shot in 2012 (doubt it if she's blamed) or at least can have an "I told you so moment". Either way she is just being spiteful and petty.

She could have gone a LONG way of bridging the gap in the party last night in her speech but she didn't. She decided to have that speech in a location where no one could interact with the outside world. She did not want her supporters there to know Obama had crossed the finish line and had made history. She wanted to keep her supporters in the dark, ignorant of the facts, and keep them solidly as Pro-Hillary as she could. Well job well done on that front.

If there was any thoughts of maybe offering her the VP slot or willing to take her as VP I think they went up in smoke last night after that little stunt she pulled in front of the entire world. Sen. Obama just needs to pick a VP now (man or woman) and use whatever time is left to reach out to her supporters with such fierceness that it would shock people.

Hillary's angry women supporters can go vote for McCain. Go ahead and do your protest vote and see where it gets you. After President McCain nominates more conservatives to the Supreme Court, kills any chance of health insurance and sends their children to fight in Iraq/Iran/?, that will show Obama who is boss.

She still has a chance to be VP...

One lone 88 year old Supreme Court justice, John Paul Stevens, is all that stands in the way of Rowe vs. Wade being overtuned. He is not likely to outlast even one term of a McCain Presidency. If Hillary's self-centeredness leads to the defeat of Obama, Roe vs. Wade is toast. Causing the overturn of Roe vs. Wade may be the most important part of this narcisstic woman's legacy.

And that's EXACTLY why Obama should offer Hillary a SCOTUS seat.

She says she supports women's rights...here's her chance to prove it.

Bill can finish out her Senate term.

Exactly! Where are all her arden female supporters on this issue? If they are so mad that they stay home or vote for McCain, the overturning of Roe v. Wade will be on their heads. There is barely a millimeter of difference between Clinton and Obama on the issues. So if you truly care about the issues you will vote for Obama. Democrats need to unite and get over the division.

Not only Roe v. Wade, but McCain is pandering to the extreme right wing and will make birth control illegal too.

Hillary is certainly acting the prima dona in this situation. I don't particularly think she's excepted the inevitable!

Will their statement include their endorsement, now that he has won?
The primaries are over and according to the rules of their party he is the nominee, every Democrat who does not get behind him is helping the Republican party.
I agree with George Washington that political parties are a "Bane" to Democracy and will never be a member of either party, but at the moment the Republicans are by far the bigger danger. The bickering within the Democratic party is a close second.
Please, Hillary supporters, our country needs you! She would be perhaps the best Secretary of Health and Human Services this country has had in decades, her prominence would give that office the clout it has been lacking since it's creation. Do not press for the VP slot, the media would reduce this campaign to a gossip column, (Obama said this, but Hillary has said...) and McCain's chances would go up.
Like I said, I am not a Democrat, but I am an American and I am an Obama supporter, so I'm asking you to play nice, and let's go kick little Johnny's ASS!

I have faith in Team Obama. They outstrategized her at every turn. She's playing with fire. He might be skinny, but this is a strong man, with much patience, but it's running out with her.

Pelosi, Dean and Reid need to perform the basic duties that they have been entrusted with. If they can't figure out a way to lead the Democrats into the General Election by supporting the clear winner of the Democratic primary then they need to step down.

They are starting to look as ridiculous as the Clinton's now.

Once again, HRC is showing herself to be a republican rather than a Democrat. By her stubborn refusal to concede, insisting that her base is the correct one and the people have spoken on her behalf, she is proving that she is unfit for the Presidency. It is called a R A C E - and it has been run. The horse in front is the horse who wins even if it's by a bump on its nose! Yes, it was a close race, yes it was JUST ABOUT EVENLY SPLIT, HOWEVER....even 49% VS. 51% STILL means the person with 51% WINS! Obama won something like 58% as well. Hillary closed her doors on herself by being spiteful, crude, and childish and is now gilding the lily with mud by being obnoxious and mean-spirited about Obama's hard-won VICTORY! Barack Obama's choice of VP should be HIS OWN. This blackmailing bullshit that HRC "earned the right" to be on the ticket is just that, bullshit. And we have had enough bullshit to last the nation for the next 50 years! It will probably take that long to get ourselves out from under the mess bushit has created for the county, and here we are listening to the equally spiteful, childish morons whining that they will vote for mcinsane & guarantee a third bushit term rather than support the man who honestly and gracefully won.

And, after last night, he passed her with the popular vote. She is still claiming it, but she lost that too. He beat her by 24000 in Montana and she beat him by 9500 in SD. She was ahead 3000 votes, but he took it. So HILLARY SHUT THE HELL UP

Well said, "littleblackcat". Well, said. Agree hold heartedly. You couldn't have said it any better than what you said. Hiliary is a sore loser and isn't deservant of the VP SLOT. Doesn't matter how many voters she has accumulated. She isn't fit to be Obama's VP.

I'm getting over my morbid curiosity about what insane thing she might do next.

Hillary is being treated like a lady, given time to get her head together, accept defeat (not like a man)... and she is the most ungracious, unladylike individual... but, with the gender card in her pocket, she does demand the special treatment... especially to manipulate it to her advantage as soon as we forget the last promises made, i.e. come June 3rd the loser would absolutely be 100% behind the winning candidate... her words not so long ago.. but now forgotten since it was really only what she meant if SHE won.

I hope Obama isn't going to have to put up with this kind of foot dragging when he is president. The American people are fed up with this behavior from Republicans and Democrats alike.

Chris Matthews was on Morning Joe today and toldthe truth. Hillary Clinton doesn't want to be a VP who is sent to funerals, and govern the senate.More importantly, she will have to take orders and she's doesn't seem like the type to take orders.

Mika Brzezinski starts laughing and Chris blasted her for laughing because he said the american people don't want another Chenney in the white house. Mika thinks there can be a co-presidency and Matthews blasted her again for laughing at Chris, who's telling the truth. Mika is a idiot.

The Clintons still have more bagage that's not vetted. And now her cronies are trying to muscle her onto the ticket and it will backfire! These Clintons will say and do anything to get back into the white house.

Hillary should not be considered for Obama's V.P. He has earned the right to chose whoever. He should not allow the Clinton to dictate. I don't think the Bill/Hillary package would be good for us- time to get to someone other than the Clinton's. Time to Unite as Americans.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:19 AM on 06/04/2008

Agreed. There are many many great choices for VP and that decision should rest squarely with the nominee, not the runner up. And our country is large enough we don't need to only pick from 2 families over and over again. Hillary isn't even the only qualified female candidate...there are numerous choices of great women who could take the slot. We can unite in a number of ways...most of which do not require us returning to the same families.

When I here Buchanan and Joe Scarborough pushing the idea I you know why. Those two right wingers know that if Hill is on the ticket it will energize the right to vote against her.
