In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

The Dems ARE divided. There are NO DEM's. It is a ruined party. Hillary saw to that. I am throughly disgusted with the leadership. They should have endorsed him this morning.

The Clinton blackmail is atrocious. I hope Obama becomes an INDEPENDANT! He'll have my vote!

Her refusal to miss yet another perfect opportunity to unite the party and be gracious in defeat only serves to highlight a repulsive selfishness and demonstrates an inability on her part to understand and accept the simple truth when it conflicts with her ambitions or wishes. Such an approach or attitude does not portend well for someone who wishes to be our president.

Frankly, her behavior is reprehensible. I hope her latest political maneuvers backfire in a huge way and finally put an end to what has evolved into an irrational obsession. At this point, she does not deserve either our attention or sympathy and, certainly, not any more of our time.

It's no longer about her. We have our nominee. He won cleanly and fairly by all objective standards. Our focus should be on the larger mission -- the greater goal -- of winning the presidency in this critical time in our history.

She and her people probably need some cover for some underhanded dealings to go this long and get 40 million dollars in debt.

Why isn't anyone talking about that?

Why doesn't the surrogates for Obama, or the media even, stress the question of whether she will be a PERSON OF HER WORD and UNITE behind the nominee? Is it because they KNOW she is not? How classless of the Clintons! Sick of her and her tactics!

The Democratic Leadership needs to "NIP IT IN THE BUD" before it gets more out of control.

WOW!!! YOU people are astounding. 15 years ago, you thought the Clintons were gods. They were a national embarassment, with new scandals every week. But you people LOVED them. He was dis-barred and nearly impeached . Then YOU could'nt wait to get Hillary to NY to run for Senate. She became a national obsession for the Democratic party. Now you can't stand her. Geez.. Talk about backstabbers.............you people take the cake.

All I can say is; By 1994 everybody else knew they were scumbags. What took you so long? And how long will it take before you see Obama for what he really is?

HEAR! HEAR! The wasted opportunities and delusional ambition at the expense of Party and Country from this this harpy have become all too clear. Her speech last night will hopefully prove to be the last straw for even the most even-tempered Dems. She now is entering a "negotiating phase" of her campaign??.......what? Party unity be damned! She is intentionally whipping her hoards into a frenzy and further divides us. She has squandered any respect she once deserved. I lost whatever shred of respect I had for Hill some time ago due to her own words, and this latest episode of ego and delusional ambition is just over the top. The sooner we see the end of this nightmare the better.

Just to be clear--I may have missed this--but have Pelosi, Reid or Dean made their endorsement yet? All I've heard since March is that they strongly urge Supers to make their pledge known after the final primary so they can rally around the victor. Okay. But how about putting your money where your mouth is. The best way they can encourage any stragglers still delusional that this could go on to the convention is to follow their own advice by clearly pledging and endorsing. This statement should have been coupled with their own endorsement.

IF HILLARY ACCEPTS HIS NOMINATION , HER BASE WILL BE VERY DISSAPOINTED. LET THIS INEXPERIENCED , IN MY OPINION LEFTIST, MAKE HIS OWN MESS. WHY GET BLAMED FOR HIS MESS. HE PROMISES THE WORLD, AND CAN'T KEEP ONE SINGLE PROMISE. HE CAN'T PULL THE TROOPS OUT, LIKE HE PROMISED AND HE DOESN'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR HIS GIVE AWAY PROGRAMS. THE ONLY THING HE CAN DO , IS GIVE MORE JOBS TO BLACKS. THAT' WON'T HURT YOU ALL HERE, BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB IN THE FIRST PLACE. OTHER THAN THAT, CONGRESS WILL TELL HIM WHAT TO DO ANYHOW, THAT'S WHY THEY SUPPORTED HIM. INSTEAD OF HILLARY ,CONGRESS WOULD HAVE TO BE MORE CAREFUL WITH THE CLINTONS, , BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE ROBES. YOU LYNCH MOB GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.

Please no dream ticket!

Last night and today Hillary ungraciously wouldn't concede, but of course all her surrogates are on TV pressuring Obama to take her as the VP. This woman is holding the party hostage. Instead of talking about how we beat John McCain, they are talking about how Obama needs to appease her supporters by putting her on the ticket. The Clinton campaign can't even let Obama have one day to celebrate this historic event. I shouldn't be surprised because for Hillary it has always been about her, not the party. Please Hillary drop out, support Obama and tell your supporters while it is O.K. to be disappointed, it is not O.K. to not support Obama. Until you really do something to unite the party, you have no credibility.

It is wrong of the media to put pressure on him.

His running mate is HIS choice. He earned that right by winning. It's always been that way. The media does not choose the running mate, nor do the voters.

The media's job is to report the absolute truth and challenge lies. They don't get to choose the running mate. They are out of line.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:00 AM on 06/04/2008

I would be so disappointed if he did chose her. His people are saying he isn't even going to pick until July. So I hope we don't have to wait until July to hear her concede and tell her supporters to get behind Obama. While I do agree the media is pushing the story of her becoming the VOP. I think the Clinton camp is doing nothing to stop the story. They are as guilty as the media.

We need to stop asking her to do the right thing and help her go over the cliff she is trying to take the party over. Win or lose, we need to send her away. If Obama takes her for VP or any position in his administration it will make bush right about Obama being a weak APPEASER. That would be one more piece of baggage around his neck BECAUSE of clinton.

she and bill would cause the focus of the message to get lost in the CONSTANT rolling out of the clinton know and unknown baggage.

The fact that she is trying to position herself as someone Obama must consult before he moves on, is INDICATIVE of how she would perform as a VP, she and bill continually, like channey, causing problems and doing deals that would subvert the Obama presidency. Anyone that does not see that is wearing blinders that caused them to believe a campaign so flawed is a good example of good leadership and governance. Just keep in mind Columbia and the trade deal bill and her campaign manager BOTH were working to get passed in congress, just to line their pockets.

If she had been gracious give her time, but like a tumor her self importance is growing by the moment. Cut her out and get rid of her. She doesn't deserve anything from Democrats with the "unity" she calls for. It was a historic moment and still Hillary Clinton made it all about her. She'll be lucky if she can keep her senate seat.

It's like everybody is enabling her, making excuses, looking the other way, or humoring a specially temperamental child just to keep the peace. She might stamp her little foot and make a scene if she doesn't get her way. Heaven forbid that happens! So we continue to placate Miss Hillary. Here child, have a nice lollipop and go away now, the adults need to talk.

Mrs. Clinton is demanding special favors because she's a girl. When do you ever remember the media and the party giving such special concern for the feelings of a male candidate. Hillary sets back the cause of feminism when she pulls these tricks. Equality means equal, not denigrated and not special, just equal.

Aren't the leaders of the Democratic party getting a bit tired of having to "please" Hillary? After listening and watching Clinton last night the thought came to mind that Clinton was not staying on to be asked to run as Obama's VP.....no, what she wants is to be asked by John McCain to run as HIS VP. Limbaugh just might have his Operation Chaos fulfilled!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:31 AM on 06/04/2008

I would not be surprised if you are right about that. She has a better chance at President by jumping ship and hoping McCain dies of old age while in office. She acts more like a Republican than a Democrat anyway. I've never been so disappointed in a politicians behavior before.

Obama would be wise not to consider her for VP, and if she doesn't concede soon he shouldn't give her any position period.

It's pretty sad that the Clinton's legacy will only be remembered for Bill's indescrections and Hillary's refusal to accept she lost the nomination to Obama.

Now if only the DNC would grow a pair, sit her down and explain to her how it is going to be.

To... Peloci and Dean...
It's a very BAD Idea To FORCE OBAMA To "MARRY" WITH HILLARY
(that could work in the 1700th but not in the 21st century) YOU want to UNIFY the Party - But You're doing the opposite. Take a bed to take the risk to beat McCain... because Peoples want WAR to END.

Hillary represents HATE to us destruction. We’ve loved her then hated her because She is betrayal. NOT trustworthy. HER SELFISHNESS …. self interest, self concern, ethical and rational egoism.
THE WORLD KNOW HER NOW - HOW DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE HISTORY FROM DAY TO DAY.

Only Her Egotism motivate her to try to enhance favorable views of herself, placing herself at the center of Obama's world with direct concern for no other than her own. Her Egotism coexist with delusions of her own importance, at the denial of others peoples of USA ( younger or educated) I know BETTER WOMEN.

I TRY and TRY... to say...ok... may be for the best of the Party.... or the NATION... but NOW I realize that IT'S TOO LATE TO bring the Party with the Hillary IMPOSING US HER RULES AND ONLY OWN RULES

Let Obama take the risk without Hillary ... YOU ALL THE PARTY WOULD BE ABLE TO WIN AND STAY STRONG UNTIL 2016 ...... Because It doesn't matter to win NOW... then to have a weak Government

Take a risk - DO IT Without someone who threaten us
LET'S CHALLENGE HER
ME WON NOT

Hillary needs to pay off her campaign debts. There's supposed to be a joint Democratic fundraiser tonight - she's tapping out her donors beforehand. Bee-awtch.

I've written to both my lame duck governor and congressional rep to ask them to switch their endorsements from Clinton to Obama (which they made months ago, before our primary.) It would be nice if my reps were just a *bit* responsive to the will of Oregonians. After all, Obama did win here. I suppose it won't matter in the long run if most govs etc. switch their alliances.

Nancy, go get Hooley, and Howard, you go after Kulongoski. Harry, check on Wyden; he'll honor the will of the people and go for Obama.

Here's the narative, folks. The MSM is going to talk to death that the Democrats are divided.

Obama may be the nominee, but St. Hillary and her band of Sisters and white hard working Americans will ride to rescue. Hail! Hail St. Hillary, the Joan of Arc of the modern Democratic Party.

Never mind her fantasy of winning the popular vote, which she did not, never mind her negatives at about 50% ( do you really think the good old boys are going to vote for a female), never mind, that what should have been a concession speech and should never have been given airtime, she still potrayed the fighting warrior. Never mind that she is a nasty bag of crap and she only cares for herself. Never mind that the whole world saw what a mean spirited, delusional person she is.

She just had to put out that she would be open to being VP, so the MSM would be sure to talk about her in the coming days, Not the nominee. She just had to grab the limelight.

What is it going to take to rid us of this woman? The MSM needs to feed the beast 24/7 so we will hear about her antics and drama, while our candidate will have to fight for airtime.
