Lime

It may be a superficial quip with Senator McCain's speech tonight, but as Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic noted, in presidential politics, "theatrics matter."

The choice of a lime green backdrop was, to put it kindly, not wise. Beyond representing a jarring visual for even the most colorblind political viewer, the set up was clearly a distraction from the speech itself. Take a look at some of the reviews:

Ambinder: "I wish I had a screen grab... but the green background is very weird and very jarring. On this stage, theatrics matter."

Matt Yglesias notes: "...it's interesting that he's shifted his aesthetic from his old black and white 'fascist' aesthetic to a new green and white Islamofascist aesthetic."

Andrew Sullivan: "From the re-branded green background to the silly attempt to capitalize on Democratic divisions to the Clintonian cooptation of an Obama meme - "a leader we can believe in" - McCain's opening gambit in the general election was, in my judgment, underwhelming."

Atrios: "It'll make you look like the cottage cheese in a lime jello salad. Always a good look for an older gentlemen... The aesthetics of McCain's speech, just mercifully completed before a slightly energized crowd of literally dozens, was awesome in how dreadful it was. No matter what Harold Ford thinks, who was somehow thoroughly moved by lime-jello McCain.

From TPM:

This is not to distract from McCain's address; that too was poorly reviewed. The most biting of the criticisms came from CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, who intoned, moments after its conclusion: "That was awful! That was pathetic!"

Josh Marshall, over at TPM, noted: "Here's how bad it is. All the Fox commentators are giving competing explanation for why McCain's speech sucked."

But if you think this was strictly a liberal prerogative, here is a sampling of the Republican response to McCain's general election launch.

Here's Mark Levin over at National Review's The Corner: "Not to offend those who might be offended, but this speech is a mash and tough to digest. You have to get through the self-congratulatory praise of independence and commander-in-chief pose from the Senate, then you have to try to follow the inconsistency of some of his big-government ideas vs. his anti-big-government rhetoric, and his inconsistency even on his supposed strength -- the surge in Iraq vs. closing GITMO and conferring additional rights on the detainees."

Summing up GOP sentiment was prominent Republican media consultant, Alex Castellanos, speaking on CNN: "Last I checked this was not a speech-making contest, thank God."

Yeah, I was kind of in a half-asleep state by the time they just broke into his speech with, "Obama is the projected nominee". The speech reminded me of lawn sprinklers, the ones that move between 3 different positions. Anybody notice his seemingly timed left, middle, right movements? In front of about 70 people, if that.
Hilarious.
I now know why McCain wants small town-hall debates. The small crowd will make his weak speaking style seem less weak; picture them debating in an arena, the crowd would totally overpower McCain and Obama would be in his element.

You huffpo wiseacres just don't get it. McCain blended in as planned -- perfect with the lime green background. The pale pallor is indicative of his future, viz., as the first presumptive nominee of the 21st Century to withdraw just before election, only to be replaced by the real nominee, (redacted). The racists rally to their great, true-conservative knight, who just happens to be Caucasian. Much slapping of foreheads, repeating the phrase,"Why didn't we think of HIM before?" Bank on it. (Hint for those with a dim pilot light.)

................Like Frankenstein.
But me -- I judge no man...

Listen, somebody, tell me this: Since 'people' have already determined that we must tread softly (in dialogue) around the issue of race in regards to Obama, must we not also feel confined to treading softly regarding the matter of McCain' s military history i.e. POWX5yrs; Heroism?! as well as his age? In other words, don't we give McCain a free ride for his military years at least as often as we claim racial hypersensitivity because of Obama's years of being a black man.

My question is not yet clear...Is it possible that McCain, though a military hero/icon could still be a mediocre human being? What makes him a military hero? Five years as a POW? And by what miracle did he survive and earn a release? He came from a highly decorated military family. Did that have anything to do with his celebrated military status.

I read many blogs and hear commentary from the Big- 3 on MSNBC that pauses short of, speaking or writing without a disclaimer on how wonderful McCain is and what a hero he is before making any comment/judgment about him. Just something to notice...Maybe we've all got 'sacred cows' to honor when speaking about these men that limits an honest discourse.

Hmmmmmm.....

My sentiments were always "this was ancient history" and he's dined off his POW status for too long. What comes out of this "hero's" mouth now from both sides is pure bullcrap.

In the marketing world, green is equated with prosperity and economic upswings. Schools' blackboards are now green because they elicit peacefulness upon viewing in the classroom.

As Jon Stewart pointed out last night, the green screen behind McCain highlighted his age and his scary smile, REALLY scary smile.

As much as I oppose McCain's policies, I'd rather we debate him on issues, and not focus on turning him into a monster. If we go down that road of demonizing our opponents, we are ourselves no better than those right-wing fear-mongers. Let's debase the issues ,and not dwell on flag lapel pins, or pastors, or skin tones, or colour coordinations (even those those can be delicious to make fun of sometimes).

Senator Obama himself has championed a new kind of politics where we tell people the truth and focus on real issues. I fervently want to see that we do just that on this website.

McCain, while I admire him for his service to our country and his willingness to tell it like it is, I just don't find him inspiring. He is as about as spicey as saw dust and when he speaks I get drowsy.

He is the Gosford Park presidential candidate. Ever watch that movie, I 've watched it a dozen times and I always fall asleep, so I've never see the ending. Those British accents just thoroughly relax me or was it the most boring movie ever made?

OMG when I saw him speaking I thought he was at a leprchaun convention! And someone really needs to tell him that they have teeth whiting strips now, I know he doesn't have a lot of money, hahaha, but really he should send one of his aids to the store. After that, well not talking would probably be best! Hope they have some good long term care insurance, he's gonna need it!

LOL. I hate to see politicians who have GREAT insurance w/ bad teeth. Makes me sick just thinking about how bad his breath has to be.

I think McCain had a good idea about the town hall meetings, although I thought the number of them and the timing was off. He proposed ten between now and the Democratic Convention -- one a week. I think there should be two a week starting right after the Democratic Convention going right up to the Republican Convention.

It would be a great buildup to the Republican Convention and help them develop their platform -- keep taxes for the wealthy, endless war because war is honorable, show support of the troops by opposing the Webb G.I. bill.

Rachel Maddow said that was why he wanted town halls, so he could speak before a large audience...........
