Obama At Aipac

According to some observers, Sen. Barack Obama faced the prospect of a cool reception during his speech Tuesday morning at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual policy conference. After receiving a massive ovation upon entering the crowd's view at the Washington Convention Center, however, the newly crowned presumptive Democratic nominee for president apparently felt comfortable enough to meet any residual doubts about his record on Israel's security with a touch of humor and a boatload of specifics.

Referencing chain emails filled with what Obama described as "tall tales" regarding his positions on Israel, the Illinois Senator asked AIPAC delegates to let him know "if you see this guy named Barack Obama, because he sounds pretty frightening." He proceeded to tell the audience that he would speaking from his heart, and then hit a series of specific pro-Israel positions that brought the crowd to its feet several times.

And then he got a hand from the next speaker: Sen. Hillary Clinton. "Let me be clear, I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel," she said. "I know Sen. Obama shares my view that the next president must be ready to say to the world. Our position is unchanging, our resolve unyielding, our stance non-negotiable. The United States stands with Israel, now and forever."

While Clinton studiously avoided referencing Obama's surge past the magic number of delegates needed to cinch the Democratic nomination, she took up the cause of defending him against criticisms Sen. John McCain made during his speech to AIPAC on Monday. Her response to McCain was explicit in a way Obama's was not, perhaps due to his attempt to respect the gathering's non-partisan spirit.

Clinton, however, had less to worry about in terms of alienating a group that was much more familiar and comfortable with her brand. Clinton told those in attendance: "Let me underscore that I believe we need a Democrat in the White House next January. ... President Bush has moved us in wrong direction." Referencing McCain's "strong rhetoric" from his speech to the conference on Monday, Clinton told AIPAC that the Arizona Republican's policies would weaken America and Israel's security, "making the Middle East a more dangerous place."

Chief among his own pledges, Obama said he would "never take military action off the table" in defending America's interests or those of Israel. "Do not be confused," he instructed the crowd. He also called on Egypt to cut off the smuggling of weapons into Hamas-controlled Gaza, described the return of Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah as a priority of U.S. policy, and said he would never "compromise when it comes to Israel's security." He also identified Jerusalem as Israel's capital at the end of any two-state solution.

Still, Obama sought to draw contrasts with the Bush administration, and by extension John McCain. The presumptive Democratic nominee noted that he had opposed holding elections in the Palestinian territories in 2006 with Hamas on the ballot -- a stance that drew cheers. Obama also said he would not wait until the "waning days" of his presidency to press for Israeli-Palestinian peace, an implicit rebuke to President Bush, who is seen as having contributed too little too late to that negotiation track.

When Obama invoked the Hebrew phrase "tikkun olam," regarding the need to "repair this world," a large whoop of cheers went up from young AIPAC staffers who had been herded around the press area -- perhaps to make certain the media heard loud praise for Obama. If their placement and volume was calculated, it turns out AIPAC need not have been so concerned.

A sustained round of enthusiastic applause from the entire conference followed Obama as he left the stage and shook hands with more than three dozen AIPAC board members that were seated behind him -- an elaborate process that was projected onto the hall's eight jumbo monitors. Each previous speaker at the conference, by contrast, only air-kissed and shook hands with those board members conveniently seated on the aisles behind the podium. But for Obama, the individual attention was perhaps a necessary and appreciated touch.

what rings true with me is the reoccurring theme i have seen develop throughout this primary. the undeniable fact that hillary....and president bill, want a presidential post, and nothing else will do. she has not conceeded...she is waiting for some terrible act to befall barack, she is trying to hold on to what she believes are her supporters, (and hers alone), she holds to the falsehood, that she won the popular vote, even tho all votes counted, barack actually won the popular vote (not that that would have any significance in these primaries), she cries or pulls the gendercard or the media card when barack racks up delegates, she refuses to see the importance of unifying the party for the november elections (for the good of america), and she had one of her main supporters and spokespeople (terry mccauliffe) announce that her campaign was moving forward on the very night that her opponent barack obama, clenched the democratic nomination.

Amazing how HRC's video is available but not Obamas. She is still breathing down his neck and no one can get away from her. It's all about her! Somebody boot her out the door! I am so sick of a woman who is so manipulating and took the moment that should have been Obama's away from him last night and still is today!

alleykat,
I thought that it was just me!! I have not been able to find SBO speech last night or anything from today. But I can easily find HRC stuff. I am not saying... i am just saying.
Seems odd.
I thought that the speech was a good speech. He is not POTUS yet people. He can't march in there and start preaching about looking at it from both sides. He will do that in a much better place and time.
He is a brilliant politician, not the same old, but brilliant non the less. He is much smarter than you people seem to understand.

Something that has always puzzled me about Israel, why is it our obligation to protect them? Can't they protect themselves? One would think that 150 nuclear weapons would be sufficient for Israel to protect themselves from any enemy.

Personally, I'm damn sick and tired of our government pandering to Israel. The people in Israel want to negotiate with Hamas, just like the people in our country want to negotiate with our enemies. Hopefully Obama will pay more attention to what the people want than the Israeli government pays to their people.

Both speeches were very good; Obama's was best.

What is missing for HRC is class, as indicated last night.

For a picture of REAL class, see Hillary Rosen's post on the first page!

Those nasty about Hillar show their lack of knowledge thus suseptibility to brainwashing effect of Obama's nasty campaign against her..among other ignorances.

Have seen about 35 stump speeches by each of them (where she's consistantly been more articulate and inspiring, and won almost every debate of 22 out of the 44 I've seen.

I was therefore unusually and highly impressed by Obama's speech there as was the audiance.

Though did make factual error on 3 Israeli hostage. not all Hezbola, 1 held by Hamas.

It was almost an hour long and very substantive for a change. WAS HEARTENED BY HIS DETAILED
SUMMARY OF THE ENORMOUS HACK JOBS/DAMAGE done by Bush&Company in every corner of the Middle East.

Watched when the board stood, did not, or clapped, since AIPAC has become an arm of the right wing Likud in Isreal, and having noticed the parallels (right wing here, right wing there) hoping Labor will be more empowered by a Democratic administration. As under the Right wing lots of new poverty in Israel, more injustices, bad policy.

Was particularly impressed by Hillary's work/awareness on the Propagandization of Palestian children IT IS ABOUT TIME, and her involvement reinstating Israels Ambulance to system to the
international counterparts. No place for anti-semetism..and her determination to prevent it worldwide..
As a brillian wonk who is a REALLY GOOD PERSON (unjusty dissed by countless lowly minded "OPINION MAKERS"). Up to her, she will be needed on day 1.

As to the issues of Israel and Middle East peace, BO has and would clearly recognize the traditional positions of the USA-Israel relationship, but would be more willing to listen to others besides hard-liners as to Israel. That is critical and is probably why he got a good reception from the crowd there.
I believe BO will find ways to discuss the issues of the Middle East, perhaps finding moderates in the region and in Israel who will seek a more balanced and sustainable relationship among the countries of the region including Syria and Iran who have supported enemies of Israel. The possibility of reducing our involvement in Iraq would help too and BO seems to be committed to that. HRC's appearance was a formality and I suspect what she said was not much away from what BO said, but both were far better than McCain.

What has McCain got to offer Israel? He wants what Hagee wants -- the destruction of the world's Jews by Jesus when he returns. Evidently, at least according to Hagee, Jesus is not going to come back before all the Jews are gathered in Israel. That would make the slaughter of unconverted Jews more convenient for Jesus and Hagee doesn't want to inconvenience Jesus. McCain embraced Hagee and Hagee will drown him even after he has "disavowed" him. McCain needs the votes of people who agree with Hagee. He eagerly courts them. Let him, then, justify those views to those of us in the Diaspora who intend to say in the countries we live in and love -- including America.

There are lots of scummy people in the religious right. They tend to gravitate there. It's the lunatic asylum of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The saner types send their sick people there so that they don't interfere with the enterprise of service to God and our fellow humans.

This is horrifying. I'm a huge Obama supporter, but WHY do we have to pander to AIPAC? This is America. Jewish Americans (God bless 'em) make up less than 4 percent of our population.

Why do our leaders need to be vetted and apporved by some podunk little country on the other side of the planet. Israel is not our strategic ally...despite what Pastor Hagee and Paul Wolfowitz tell you. They've got some nice beaches and export mediocre wine, but really, what do they do for us?

Never let your government dictate who is your enemy or your ally. Isreal does nothing for me, personally. I wish the Israelis well, but I am endlessley incensed that this lobbying group (AIPAC) has been granted the power of Kingmaker my country.

Israel may not have done anything for you personally that you are aware of (see below link)

Your statement that Israel is not our strategic ally shows your complete lack of understading of both the political and military landscape of the Middle East relative to US interests in the region.

The Obama Team would be insane to bring the Clintons on board.

Not only would they bring all their negative baggage with them, from the hard-wired negative ratings to the past and current scandels, they would also be working from within to subvert and seize control of an Obama Administration.

After 8 years of having Vice-President Cheney subverting and controlling our government with no meaningful accountability (remembering that Cheney declared, largely unchallenged, that the Vice President is accountable under neither the Executive or Legislative Branches), what sane person would think that putting Bill/Hillary in the Vice President's office would be a good idea?

In selecting a Vice President, there are many better options than Hillary, but few worse.

The Obama Team needs to kill this nightmare a.s.a.p. before it can have any opportunity to become a reality.

Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq War Resolution, voted for the USA PATRIOT Act, voted for the No Child Left Behind Act, voted for the Bankruptcy Abuse
Prevention and Consumer Protection Act, voted for Kyle-Lieberman amendment categorizing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp as “a foreign terrorist organization," and is a member of the (republican-lite) Democratic Leadership Council. Through her husband we can credit her for passage of NAFTA, failure to establish a comprehensive health care plan in 1993, the massive bombing of Iraq and starving of millions of Iraqi children; republican-style welfare "reform" during the 90s; and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. On top of all this, she thinks she has the right to proclaim that America stands with Israel, now and forever? Please. America has no business supporting apartheid.

Pandering to AIPAC is a political reality in this countrry. Seems like we've been hi-jacked. There are no honest brokers out there. Obama really disappointed me. Looking more like a typical insider. Meanwhile, the occupation hits 60 years, and the Palestinians have no friends in Washington. Truly a devastating disappointment for me Mr. Obama. You might have just lost the vote of someone who has defended you at every turn. Nader is looking more my speed. A pandering speech to the biggest foregin policy PAC in Washington. What was is that you said about the influence of lobbies in Washington?

Tasies - cut Senator Obama some slack, will you? Do you seriously believe that AIPAC would not sandbag the future POTUS? Look what they have done to President Carter despite the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.

Unfortunately -non-AIPAC supporting Jews and Israelis are also considered "traitors" while the gentile population is anti-semitic. The Palestinian problem will and can be changed by a successful POTUS in office, and not by a sandbagged DPN.

Having said what I did, I feel like Jimmy Carter that the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli government and IDF is one of the worst tragedies in modern history. I wish that Obama was able to see that with the Israeli government being the largest single recipient of government-to-government aid from the US, that it has both the leverage and the moral obligation to advocate for the Palestinian people when it is funding a military machine which is demeaning and killing a people on a daily basis. That includes demanding that the government honour UN Resolution 242 at the same time he calls upon Syria to honour Res.1701.
