WASHINGTON — Barack Obama named a three-person team including Caroline Kennedy to lead his search for a running mate Wednesday while expressing confidence that the Democratic Party would soon unify after a bruising battle for the presidential nomination.

"I'm very confident of how we're going to be able to bring the party together," Obama said after a brief conversation with Hillary Rodham Clinton, his vanquished rival.

Campaign officials said Kennedy, who is the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, as well as former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and longtime Washington insider Jim Johnson have already begun compiling information on potential running mates. They disclosed no names.

Obama clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, taking a major step toward his goal of becoming the first black president. While Clinton has yet to concede defeat, she and associates have been maneuvering for the past 24 hours to gain her a place on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the founder of the Black Entertainment Network, was among them, and said he was doing so with her blessing.

Johnson said he had written the Congressional Black Caucus asking its members to urge Obama to place Clinton on the ticket.

Clinton "didn't direct me to do it but she certainly knows what I'm doing," said Johnson, who angered Obama's aides earlier in the race when he obliquely referred to Obama's confessed drug use as a young man.

Democrats began closing ranks quickly.

Two senators swung behind Obama after remaining neutral throughout his long nominating battle with Clinton, as did Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., a member of the House leadership with close ties to both senators.

"We have a nominee of our party," said Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa. Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado also announced his endorsement.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale, who had been a Clinton supporter, announced he was backing Obama.

It hardly mattered in terms of delegate math _ after months of struggle, Obama had more than enough to prevail at the party convention in Denver in August.

But Mondale, Harkin, Salazar and others poised to endorse Obama later in the day were also sending a message to Clinton that her race is over, whether she will admit it or not.

Obama began his public day with an appearance before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, where he pledged support for Israel and accused Republican rival John McCain of backing a "plan for staying, not a plan for victory" in Iraq.

Earlier, McCain freshened the criticism he directed at Obama on Tuesday night.

"I think he has exercised very bad judgment on national security issues and others," he said in a television interview.

The disclosure about the three-person veep vetting team was an unambiguous signal that Obama is turning his full attention to the general election campaign.

Kennedy's name came as a surprise, although she endorsed Obama at a critical time in the campaign last winter, saying he could be an inspirational leader like her father. She also campaigned for Obama.

Holder is a former federal prosecutor and District of Columbia Superior Court judge who held the No. 2 job at the Justice Department under President Clinton.

Johnson is widely known among Democrats for having helped previous candidates, including John Kerry four years ago, sift through vice presidential possibilities. He is a former chief executive officer for the mortgage lender Fannie Mae.

Obama and Clinton ran into each other backstage at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee meeting, which they addressed separately Wednesday morning.

"I just spoke to her today, and we're going to be having a conversation in coming weeks, and I'm very confident how unified the Democratic party's going to be to win in November," Obama told reporters as he left the Senate.

Asked if Clinton indicated she planned to concede, Obama replied: "It wasn't a detailed conversation."

He dismissed a question about her refusal to concede after the final two primaries Tuesday night by saying she was "understandably focused on her supporters."

Clinton visited her campaign headquarters in suburban Virginia, where she thanked staff for their work. Aides said she was also phoning superdelegates and supporters, and planned to host an 89th birthday celebration at her Washington home for her mother, Dorothy Rodham.

Part I:

For John McCain (and many voters), the race will be about National Security the "winning" War in Iraq, based on his role as a highly respected War Hero (even Barack refers to McCain in these terms), a title Barack Obama himself can't claim.

I question the foundations of that assumption, and I question it on the basis of my own experience during (and understanding of) the Viet Nam War (a war called the War of Resistance Against America, in Viet Nam).

On October 26, 1967 John McCain "was flying his twenty-third bombing mission over North Vietnam when his A-4E Skyhawk" [an American Attack Aircraft] when he "was shot down by a missile over Hanoi" (Wikipedia).

The USA's military intervention in Viet Nam was justified by the since discredited Domino Theory, which projected a chain of communist-led takeovers of governments in the region. As we all know, those fears proved to be historically invalid.

I too was asked to participate in that conflict, and presented myself at the Army Induction Center in Phoenix AZ for examination as ordered (the Draft -obligatory military service- was still in effect).

I was aware that Viet Nam represented no threat to the security of the United States of America. I was also sure that I could be of greater service to my country (as well as the rest of humanity) by continuing the work and research I was already performing.

(To be Continued)

Part II:

Furthermore, I had worked for the federal government and lived on a military base part of that time, so I had

a fairly clear idea of what I was up against and what needed to be done in order to complete my own

fundamental mission in life.

History has born me out. My evaluation of the situation at hand was accurate and based on personal knowledge

of five sets of conditions: The International Context, the nature of the Viet Nam War, the Military

Mentality, Federal and Martial Law and not least of all, the God-given right to realize my own potential;

plus my ability to make that knowledge understood to others.

As a result I was classified 1-Y, meaning: This Man Can and Will Fight! Call on him in case of a True

National Emergency but don't bother trying to conn him into an unnecessary, wasteful and disgraceful war like

the tragic conflicts in Viet Nam and Iraq - because He Won't Fall for It!

John McCain was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, for the wrong reasons and was shot down for his

misguided efforts. Did he save anyone's life under fire? No! Did he sign an Anti-American statement (after

four days of coercion)? Damn right he did! Does that make him a War Hero?

As a 30 year active duty, retired CSM, I found your comment very interesting.

Since you were classified disabled by the draft board, was the classification later upgraded? If so, where did you go next? What MOS did you train for (where) and what combat unit were you with in Nam? Do you remember your First Shirt's name?

This race will be like a young Mohammad Ali fighting that old retired diary driver that he fought one time. That fight went on to become the basis for the Rocky movie. McCain will go down to Obama in three.

"nativeeyes" is referring to your hero, "Hundred years War" McCain, the happily bought lapdog of Charles Keating and the K Street crowd.

When you shippin' out for Iraq, 'awcbuddy8?" Your hero "Hundred Years War" McCain will need plenty of warm bodies to ensure his plan can continue. Or are you afraid of a few IEDs and getting stop-lossed?

You know, I'm so proud of us Obama supporters. We believed, and we said we weren't going to take it anymore.

We were just as relentless as Hillary and her supporters, if not more so.

Yes, the liberals/progressives of this country are the ones that make things happen -- change.

We analyzed well, read and researched and believed we all made the right choice. We still believe and we hope for the best and we still have work to do for the fall election.

I'm so proud of us.

Without the outlet of Huffpo, our voices would not have been heard so powerfully.

We owe Huffpo, a debt of gratitude. I know many of you complain, about the site, but I also know that all of us are grateful for this site.

A place for Obama supporters to express ourselves and to convene -- all like minded, with a few naysayers, doubting Thomases, sprinkled in.

It's all good!

BREAKING NEWS

On Countdown Andrea Mitchell is reporter that HER congressional supporters forced her to suspend her campaign. There was allot of frustration and anger from her supporters. Because she wanted to keep it going as a bargaining chip with Oobama. It had nothing to do with the Oobama camp at all. He was willing to give her time. There was allot of discomfort and displeasure with her speech. Especially the drunk Terry Mac and the way he introduced her last night.

I'm watching BET and they are showing the 10 biggest points in Oobama's campaign to win the nomination. It's a great piece that shows all the ups and downs in the campaign. I would recommend if for everyone. I won't give much away but the #1 moment is probably the real turning point of the campaign, even though he had an unsurmountable led before that point.

The greatest comment was when one person said the best moment in the future, if we are lucky enough, will be watching Oobama's daughters playing on the south lawn of the white house. I get misty even putting that mental image in my mind and I;m a 46 year old white dude.

I hope all the Repug delegates didn't throw out those cute little flip-flops from '04 convention 'cuz they can use 'em again this year! And maybe they can order some more 'purple heart' band-aids to wave in the McWarHero's face?...they enjoyed it sooo much with Kerry I'm sure it'll go over big with Gramps too! Big fun in Minnesoter this summer...the perfect way to cap off the whole thing would be for Gramps to pick LIE-berman as his running mate...woohoo!

Can't wait to see the debates between Big O and McSame....should be real entertaining!

These polls between 0bama and McCaln are wack, they don't factor in the huge voter turnout difference between Dems and Repubs, let alone 0bama and McCaln:

TOTAL POPULAR VOTES IN 2008 PRIMARIES:

DEMS: 37,132,010
GOP: 20,581,227

0BAMA: 17,565,122
MCCAlN: 9,591,375

0bama and the Dems got almost double the votes of McCaln and the Repubs.

If you thought the polls were off during the Dem primary, wait till the GE. It will be a landslide for 0bama.

Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain 49%-44% among "likely" voters, the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

Obama's advantage narrows slightly among REGISTERED voters, to 47%-44%.

Meanwhile, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton leads McCain 49%-43% among REGISTERED voters.

What exactly is the difference between a REGISTERED and a "LIKELY" VOTER? Anyone?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:53 PM on 06/04/2008

A Registered voter is just that - someone who has registered to vote and is in the Secretary of States and/or county clerks database.

I believe a "Likely Voter" is someone of voting age who may or may not be registered. Most polls that include "likely voters" should not be done close to the election date becasue if they are not registered they probably wont be able to vote (unless of course they live in a state that offers same day registering.

I think this is correct but anyone else?

It's obviously not your fault but .pollsters need to stop polling Clinton numbers. As long as pollsters do dual polls it will give a false impression to the voters.

Are you serious?? You can't compare the two primaries and the total vote numbers. McCain had the nomination wrapped up months ago. Most Republicans didn't even bother to vote. They will, however, vote in November. You can bet on it.

Just a heads-up to anyone wishing a reprieve from much of the banal coverage of this historic moment on the part of the American press. Watch BBC America. They get it. Right now, they are providing in-depth coverage of the significance of Obama's win in the context of the Civil Rights movement in America, asking a Washington Post Black reporter insightful questions on his thoughts on the race, giving astute analysis of the Obama/McCain race, and offering a worldwide perspective of Obama's victory. Excellent! I've seen nothing that can compare from the U.S. MSM.

Thank you for the heads up. I am sick and tired of hearing the talking heads discuss Hillary. She lost the election. Obama won. This is not rocket science.

Hillary needs to withdraw and endorse Obama. Why does she need time? She lost the nomination months ago.

If you heard McCains speech last night, you know we have many reasons to be afraid of a McCain victory in November. He will finish the job of destroying America that Bush/Cheney started.

18,107,710 to 18,046,007 is indeed a slim margin, and big kudos to Clinton for, as promised, doing whatever it took to maintain unity.
