Is John McCain trying to be the older, whiter, more conservative Barack Obama?

On Tuesday, the Senator co-opted the slogan that has come to personify Obama's candidacy, taking the Illinois Democrat's "Change You Can Believe In" and altering it into "A Leader You Can Believe In."

The line donned McCain's lime-green backdrop as he addressed supporters in Louisiana. During that speech, moreover, the Arizonan took his Obama-posing a step further, uttering the word "change" more than 30 times. Not that Obama can claim sole ownership of the word or idea, but still...

Now there is this. On Wednesday, the McCain campaign put out a new homepage, featuring his new, Obama-like slogan, and an image that seems uncannily similar to Obama's trademark campaign logo - the red and white stripped valley under what appears to be a blue sun (or in McCain's case, blue sun rays). Take a look.

McCain's seems to be positioning himself so that he is not caught, like Sen Hillary Clinton, simply ceding the mantle of change to Obama. But when the co-opting of images, logos, and slogans is this blatant, it could prove more embarrassing than advantageous.

Good for him. Obama repacked and stole dozens of solutions from Clinton during the campaign.

I'm looking forward to Obama's Icarus fall.

Did he? Oh, I get it... You and the rest of the world were watching two different campaigns.

Tyrione's post is one more piece in the (seemingly unending) line of evidence that Hillary and her supporters are willing to punish the party for not giving her the nomination (when in fact she did not get the nomination because she did neither ideas, nor courage, nor honesty, nor party loyalty).

Hillary revealed her true self when she said that only she and McCain are qualified to be president. I have never heard of a Democratic primary candidate who said that the Republican is more qualified that her Democratic opponent. It is absolutely revolting.

So now, they are saying "Ooh, boo-hoo! We can't _wait_ for Obama and our party to lose! Waaaah!"

Hillary is pure poison, and her supporters have drunk the suicidal Kool-Aid.

The reality is Obama cannot win without the support of HRC's supporters, which by last count on CBS, accounted for 51% of all votes cast in the primary. What's supposed to be kiss and make up, is looking more and more like a shotgun wedding.

Here's some sobering facts for the Obama-lites while you party:

Largest States Won By Barry Hussein Obama in the primary: Illinois & Wisconsin.

Greatest number of votes and margin accumulated in the last ten weeks (since Super Tuesday) by a candidate: HRC by 500,000+ votes over BHO. (AP)

And on the CBS news last night by Bob Sheiffer: "No major candidate of either party has ever won the general election without FIRST winning the swing and big states won by HRC ."

Maybe the wings are really wax.

SO what is your point. Notwithstanding that you are a democrat, candidate agrees with 95 percent of the nominees positions, and the opposition candidate, while not the worst republican, is STILL anti-choice, voted against the equal pay act, will more likely than not start some conflageration with Iran and remain in Iraq, has NO plan for universal health care, global climate change, new energy resources, etc... Don't bite your nose despite (or spite) or face.

OhReallySheSaid,

Okay we get it.....Hillary's supporters are NOT going to vote for Obama. Fine then, don't vote for him. All of this threating and acting like somebody needs to kiss hillary supporters ass for them to vote in their best interest is just stupid. If 18 million people want to vote for McCain, then do it but before ya'll cross over how about getting hillary out of debt so Obama can get on with the business of the general election instead of helping Hillary with a fundraiser.

Sobering? Hardly.

The "only big states count" theory is wrong. Maybe you didn't notice, but Obama won 34 out of 54 contests. Are you suggesting that those 34 states/territories don't count? You DO realize you're saying over half of the country is insignificant?
Also, your whole premise is based on bad logic. You point out some states that Clinton won as evidence that Obama can't get it, but you're missing something really important - CLINTON WASN'T RUNNING AGAINST THE REPUBLICANS. Just because Clinton won a state in the primaries, it doesn't mean Obama, a fellow Democrat, can't win in the general election.

"Greatest number of votes and margin accumulated in the last ten weeks (since Super Tuesday) by a candidate: HRC by 500,000+ votes over BHO. (AP)"
Sweety, Clinton only won the popular vote if you didn't count several caucus states where Obama won and include Michigan, where his name wasn't even on the ballot. Try again.

And one more thing: The Economist's analysis of the election shows that if just 20% of HRC's blue dog cross over to McCain, it's over for BHO.

No worries... she will be campaigning for him starting Saturday. I doubt McCain can garner 20% of voters for Hillary. Just think, Bush Tax Cuts Permanent, 100 years in Iraq, Supreme Court appointments (think Roe v. Wade), and all the lovely gifts McCain keeps giving the dems with all his misspeaks and gaffes... Jedi mind tricks get it done in this election.

Perhaps if you had paid attention, you would have noticed that Clinton copied Obama's website style early in the primaries (though nowhere near as obvious as this). She also began using his slogans, like saying SHE was actually the change candidate AND she had her supporters chanting "Yes We Will." Granted, you can't copyright a politican slogan, but if someone has been using it for months and you change one word, it's pretty obvious that you're just trying to capitilize on someone else's success. And perhaps you also didn't notice that Obama's slogans, speeches and sayings have been consistent throughout the campaign, while Hillary constantly changed hers.

That's in the past though and I think Senator Clinton for her tenacity, because she has truly helped Senator Obama become a stronger candidate against the Republicans.

Love the smoker's/buttered bread colored teeth, K-Mart blue light special, fog-inspired gray button down (with slightly ruffled shirt pocket) and picnic table red & white stripes.

Obama's graphic designer was asleep behind the Wacom tablet and it's clear that this was an impulse decision since the graphic doesn't really match anything else on the site and the photography is just God awful. Looks more like he's posing for his Wal-Mart ID card rather than looking commanding like the next CIE.

But as the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Too bad the imitation sucks.

It's there, right on his homepage. It looks like they just stuck that graphic in the middle of the page. The rest of the page looks like an "old man site." None of the images blend together, there's no consistency or relationship between the "pieces" on the page and the colours are completely off. It looks like a butchered cut and paste.

You mean John McCain wants to be Barack Obama? I mean who wouldn't. John McCain might be realizing his platform sucks and yearns to carry a populist message. Alas, the populist message is the Democratic message. If McCain wants to argue within this framework, then he's going to get his ass handed to him.

Gramps thinks he's going to fool the low-information voters with this. They'll think they're on Obama's Web site and donate. Ha!

So Hillary took her slogan from Obama when she changed it to "Yes, She Can". And she took McCain's "Ready from Day 1".

Now McCain mimics Obama's colors and patterns and basically steals the slogan, "Change You Can Believe In".

The most shocking thing? All this lack of creativity probably cost the McCain and Clinton campaigns MILLIONS of dollars!!!!

OMG he totally lifted the idea!

The Obama camp totally came up with the red, white, and blue color combination. And the stripes, Obama doodled that himself on a napkin.

I know you all know this, but I will remind you anyway, Hillary's site looks similiar also.

Some one has too much time on their hands.

The rays and the specific shades of colors are exactly like Obama's scheme and logo. Yes, everyone uses red, white, and blue, but this is obviously a heist.

Of course every presidential candidate uses red, white and blue. But you can't look at McCain's new site layout (and his new logo) and Obama's original layout and not include that it was a complete rip off.

I take it as a good sign that the Republicans are scared.

McCain ripped off Obama's slogan? Big surprise. By the time all is said and done, Rove will have voters believing it was Obama that stole the slogan from McCain.
