Is John McCain trying to be the older, whiter, more conservative Barack Obama?

On Tuesday, the Senator co-opted the slogan that has come to personify Obama's candidacy, taking the Illinois Democrat's "Change You Can Believe In" and altering it into "A Leader You Can Believe In."

The line donned McCain's lime-green backdrop as he addressed supporters in Louisiana. During that speech, moreover, the Arizonan took his Obama-posing a step further, uttering the word "change" more than 30 times. Not that Obama can claim sole ownership of the word or idea, but still...

Now there is this. On Wednesday, the McCain campaign put out a new homepage, featuring his new, Obama-like slogan, and an image that seems uncannily similar to Obama's trademark campaign logo - the red and white stripped valley under what appears to be a blue sun (or in McCain's case, blue sun rays). Take a look.

McCain's seems to be positioning himself so that he is not caught, like Sen Hillary Clinton, simply ceding the mantle of change to Obama. But when the co-opting of images, logos, and slogans is this blatant, it could prove more embarrassing than advantageous.

Let's see, House Republicans ripped off the anti-anxiety drug Effexor's slogan.

Now McCain shamelessly rips off Obama's slogan.

They have the creativity of a slug.

Or maybe McCain woke up yesterday, thinking "Hey, this has a catchy sound to it," not remembering it was Obama's slogan that he heard haunting him in his sleep.

I feel as if Grandpa doesn't want to be president. The repugs know this year they are doomed. I bet a few of them even want us to win so we can get our country back. Then they can screw it up again. It seems as if they just threw out a token candidate and Gramps is just going through the motions because he knows he is screwed. Just a hunch.

I've had the same thought about Sen. McCain's heart just not being "into" it. He just doesn't seem like the strongest candidate the Republican party had (has). Like, he was a consolation prize or something. IDK. Pathetic.

I had this same thought just 10 minutes ago...along with "how can a sane, thinking person vote for this man (McCain)?"

First it was the "Change you deserve" and now this. I did not realize that McCain campaign is not only bankrupt with money but is also bankrupt with ideas. What is next, "Change you can grow old with"? I think we should ask our community to help out McCain with a slogan that they can truly call an original, the same way we helped the Republican Party with their slogan.

Yeah, and I really have to question their "choice between going forward and going backward" language. Do they not realize that every person reading or hearing that is going to associate McCain with going backward.... waaaaay back?

Yeah, I liked "Change You Deserve." It was a really poignant slogan. As in, if this country actually elects Grandfather Time to the office of the Presidency, then we will definitely get what we deserve- If you know what I mean.

So McCain's way of saying he's not like George Bush is to try to be like Barack Obama?

I am so glad that Huffington Post writers have noticed the same things as I did! Last night, watching McCain speak, the first thing I noticed was the green backdrop (I thought -- Green...hmmm, McCain is an Irish name, maybe that's why he picked green?? Odd.) The second thing I noticed was the slogan "A Leader We Can Believe In", and my mouth dropped open. Watching the speech itself was painful. Afterwards, I started worry that maybe this was a ploy by McCain to get the Democrats to become totally complaicent, believing that their nominee had no real competition (sort of a "tortoise and the hare" type story). I can't believe McCain would have won the Republican nomination by making speeches like that. Yikes!

Is he in St. Petersburg tonight at the Vinoy? Tons of cops, war protestors(about 8 ppl, not very vocal and poorly constructed signs) across the street and 2 dillweeds (white putz's in their 30's, clasic Repug uniforms- kakhi's, blue oxfords and boring shoes) holding McCain signs on the closer side of the street.
That's about it. pretty lame actually.
