Yesterday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had himself a holy snit-fit over a perceived slight from Majority Leader Harry Reid over judicial nominees. Believing that Reid was dragging his feet "on a promise to clear a significant number of Republican judicial nominees" - and perhaps upset over his own re-election prospects - McConnell used a parliamentary maneuver to shut down the entire Senate and punish the Democrats: "The Democratic majority has refused to honor its commitments...It apparently believes that commitments do not matter in the United States Senate, and that actions do not have consequences."
The thing is, McConnell's maneuverings didn't really punish the Democrats. The person who ended up getting punished was the poor Senate clerk, who McConnell forced to read "the entire 500 page global warming bill" out loud. McConnell's actions can thus be rightly considered to be "a total dick move."
The Urban Dictionary defines the "dick move" as "an egregious, selfish and usually public stunt, i.e....dumping a workload unnecessarily upon a friend or coworker." It goes on to note that "the exclamation of the phrase 'Dick move!' in a high, nasal voice is sometimes the only socially acceptable recourse." It's a retaliation that might seem, on the surface, to be a weak, insufficient response, but it does help to alleviate the situation somewhat by forestalling a series of escalating "dick moves" that could bring the entire U.S. government to a halt.
Rumors that Senator Harry Reid planned to call out McConnell for his total dick move were not confirmed.
