WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters _ the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York _ switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

Obama, 100% enemy approved

Hillary will do a much better job in the senate keeping the Daily Kos and MoveOn types and other far left wackos from taking over the party. It's over, she fought a good fight. She and the moderates lost. The "Daily Kos" types and leftists one.

Say good by the the party of the working man.

It's cute seeing her make nice all of a sudden. Things she wouldn't do during the race, and failed to do after it--basic things like congratulating the winner, acknowleging that she lost, and urging people to unify around the party's candidate--she suddenly started doing. She'll go on doing them until the moment she learns that she's not gonna be veep, and then bad HIllary will return, with a vengeance.

You're transparent, Hillary. It's not like you're folling anyone.

Does anyone here remember the sustained media and right wing witch hunt against the Clinton's throughout the nineties? Well this campaign was nothing different. The media has run this story regarding her reported telephone conversatton , and exaggerated and obfuscated it so as to sew greater discord among Democrats. Yes her campaign made mistakes, so did Obama's. And the media and the Repugs will do everything to exaggerate those in the GE. As a post grad young man who voted for Sen. Clinton I'm thrilled that the other option is so wonderful. Compared to what has occupied the White House these last seven years either would have been a pronounced change for the better. I think it's unfortunate that we allow the media, who's sole task is to confuse and manipulate, to hold such sway over our opinions. The fact that so many are so predisposed to vilify Hillary and deify Obama is setting our selves up for political division and disappointment. I have high hopes for a new Democratic administration. Beware, what they did to the Clinton's they will do to the Obama's.

I am so proud of Obama at this moment because he is such a gentleman and so diligently wanting to calm Hillary's nerves about his nomination and trying to open a path to togetherness for both of them.

I'm sure he will give her whatever she wants (excluding the VP position) to have her save face and not shoot her down like most would like him to do. He knows she was a viable component and that he should not make her feel like a loser. God bless him and keep him for being such a grand human being. I wish I could be that way someday when I grow up!

We should all follow his lead and compromise, forgive, and forget to come together as one for the best of us all. What an example he is for all people.

One way for all of this to work, is for her to say she was offered the VP position, but turned it down, and for him to give her something else that would be a natural fit for her. She does have a lot to offer, but one thing that I've noticed is that Obama does not like drama. He likes things to run as smoothly as possible.

Hopefully this can all work out and we can be a united Democratic party.

I agree whole-heartedly that about Obama and Clinton. However, he can't offer VP just so she can save face. You could see in his interviews yesterday that he's really going for the Lincoln "team of rivals" cabinet--and that he wants a VP who is thoroughly vetted, not just a politically expedient appointee.

I don't think HIlary and Bill's finances will stand up to vetting--I doubt they'll even disclose them. Bill as a paid lobbyist for a foreign government (Colombia, Dubai)....the library donors....the 2007 tax return....her earmarks....his business dealings that have boosted their bank account from $0 to $109 milion in 8 years....I don't think the Clintons will choose to disclose any of these.

But, perhaps a Cabinet job or SC opening. (However, personally, I think being a strong leader as a Senator of the majority party would be far better, far more influential than a Cabinet job--and DEFINITELY a hundred times better than the thankless job of VP.

Does anyone remember Tom Lehrer's classic song about the great MN senator, Hubert Humphrey, becoming VP? That really said it all.

It would be nice after all this time if Hillary took some notes from Barack on how to be gracious and kind. She just doesn't seem to know how to do that. Kill 'em with kindness. I really think that's Obama's motto. It's definitely worked so far.

One of the pundits on MSNBC last night pointed out that as the wife of the president H** often pushed out Al Gore and denied him his role as vice president.

That tells me how respectful she would be of B's role as president: not at all.

I will trust B's choice and I pray he will not choose her. At this point if he does he will have to fight the perception that he has been bullied. Not a good way to start a presidential campaign.

Too bad you were not watching CNN and listening to David Gergen who actually worked in the administration and who viewed her from his first interview with her, when the president was asking him to come and serve their administration, knowing he had served two Republican presidents as press secretaries,as someone who talked straight, had a very comfortable way with people an good sense of humor and very personable and brilliant and very in touch wiht everyday people's concerns. Coming from someone who for twenty years and been pretty solidly idenitfied as republican leaning, for her to talk with him in such a way that he woudl feel comofortable working for a demicratic president, said a lot more about HER ability to unify than anything. It made me realize how little most Obama supporters really know about her who criticize her as so divisive. I have heard over and over in her 8 years inthe senate how she is able to bring folks together and maybe, just maybe, now that the race is over, you can have an attitude adjustment yourselvesfor the unity of the party. The woman is not the devil incarnate. Remember "pundits" express their biases without usually knowing or working with the person on a day to day basis, like David Gergen did.

No doubt that Hillary will continue to be a force to reckon with in the senate.
As an also ran she can focus her efforts to help strengthen the party, and remind her supporters that are shouting defection to Mc Cain,
that McCain will send women back to the middle ages, barefoot and pregnant.
His policys are anti women and anti ethical to the womens movement. If we want to see a woman in the oval office sooner rather than later Obama is the best choice moving forward.
Eight years from now I am certain a strong, affable, capable woman will emerge to run for office.

Take a look around I see strong capable women every where I go. We are all replaceable in my mind it isn't the woman but all women that have been elevated by this 2008 race.

Cheers Mrs Clinton for being the first through the glass ceiling the hole that you made will allow my daughters an easier passage. Thank you .

Senate and Congress are at least of the same importance for Change in Washington, as is the Presidency. If she should be awarded the position of a leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate, this is in no way a second-line-position.

O b a m a , the Democrats and "We the People" (which are, as some of you may know already, in fact are "You, the People" for me...) will need all the help, they can get, to master the challenges, the coming eight years will offer them.

In fact, I envy nobody, who will have to deal with the humongous mess in the "Stable of Augias", which GWB and the Republicans will leave behind for the next government to clean up, when they leave office in January '09.

Should President O b a m a rename the president's weekly radio-adress rename - from "The State of the Nation" - to "The Stable of Augias", instead, for that matter? Naaa - just kidding...

Hillary will seek to be a force in the Senate, but she has badly damaged her currency as a party leader with her Bush-Rove style campaign, and her clearly flawed leadership, strategy and management.

She should enjoy her last 4 years. From all I hear, she will have a VERY difficult time being re-elected from NY. She has burned many bridges.

Mrs. Clinton is the most well-known woman in America, First Lady for eight years, a twice-elected senator from one of our largest states, with four-years remaining in her term, and the runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination, essentially tying Senator Obama in primary/caucus delegates and popular votes. Mrs. Clinton will continue to be a force, in important ways, in our nation's policies and politics. Senator Obama won the nomination with super delegates, in accord with the rules, and our energies need to be expended toward assuring his election. The derisive, and, usually, personal comments, about Mrs. Clinton are counterproductive.

She can't be trusted. Listen to HER words and not to what everyone else is saying. Her staff and the media are doing the American public a disservice by continuing this speculation. Look how she has behaved. This is totally disrespectful and disingenuous. She could have taking all the time she wanted if she had behaved with any semblance of respect. He even had to hear that she was to suspend her campaign from the media rather than from her personally. How can someone with so little respect for him and the moment in history they both played ever be trusted. Throw her under the train just as she has done with her Democratic Party's values. She doesn't deserve to be Vice President.

Before her supporters throw me under the Semi, Train, Bus, and Tank for these views, I ask only one thing. Please look at how she has behaved herself from the start. Compare what she has said from the beginning of her campaign as compared to what she was saying after Super Tuesday, as compared to what she said and did at the end. I ask you to think about how you would feel if their places were reversed. And finally, PLEASE stop blaming him for what other have said. Listen to his words and look at his actions, just as I've asked you to listen to her words and look at her actions.

The Media is just selling copy and advertising. McBush/unlimited spying is not exciting and they want to keep him away from the cameras just in case he makes another gaffe. So they pump up this issue and allow all of these people to dribble into the microphone.

Who cares what they think? But if you spin the words and make a headline, it becomes news. Bloggers get upset and type their poor little fingers off, people purchase news copy and they make money.

Now that it is over what is there to read? The news is about Michelle Obama giving Barack a pound. That's newsworthy? It that going to become the new diplomatic handshake? Do we need to amend the constitution or pass a treaty at the U.N. to make it the official handshake?

She missed the chance for this. Had she conceded and congratulated the winner, she'd be in a much stronger position.

Going to the media instead of Obama was a huge mistake.

I think she just blew it. She either gets bad advice or is just tone-deaf.

I think she surrounds herself with supporters and loyalists and in that way she is like Bush in his bubble.

It really is an alternate reality on her websites.

Hillary is going to the "slo mo" defense. She'll do the minimum possible to appear to support Obama between now and the convention, and to avoid the criticism that she's dividing the party, while her surrogates and Bill work behind the scenes to undermine Obama. She's hoping that the polls over the summer will make it look like Obama is truly unelectable, and then she'll still has the shot of a huge turnaround at the August convention, when she hopes the super delegates (and even those pledged delegates - who we know the Clinton's believe are not really pledged) will switch sides and give her the nomination.

She doesn't want to be VP. She wants to be President, and she hasn't given up on that yet.

No fooling. Obama had to learn from the press that she was going to call it quits. That woman surely lacks class.

If you are insisting that Hillary supporters must leave him alone to make his own decision, then YOU must leave him alone to make his own decision.

I don't think we need a petition. We just need to support Barack's team in their meticulous vetting process--and support him to make a wise decision when it's over.

The Clintons' probably can't/won't be vetted because of Bill's lobbyist connection with Colombia & Dubai...the library...Burkle....2007 tax returns....and many other problems.

But if Obama chooses Hillary, I think we need to respect his process, respect his team. And respect his decision, that it's a wise one that he's decided will work best for him and for the country.

HE'S patient. Why can't we be?

Barack needs to look outside of the Senate for a VP candidate ... to the governors or even captains of industry.

Hillary would make an amazing DHHS Secretary.

Yes. Look outside the Senate and the House. 0bama cannot raid the congress to fill his team. We need to look beyond just winning the presidency. 0bama needs to unleash his very effective, bottom-up organization and direct it toward electing more dems to congress. In order for change to happen, we need to retain and build a democratic majority in both houses.
