WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters _ the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York _ switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

Everyone including the media needs to take a deep breath and relax. Obama will not rush to choose a VP. Yes, Clinton is a consideration, but there is a lot of things Obama will take into account and she will be vetted the same as anyone else.

We need to keep in mind, if the reality of the situation is Clinton can not accept number 2, or she will have animosity towards Obama loosing, or they can not work together then it's in the countries best interest that he go with someone else.

2 great things don't necessarily go well together. If she is best choice, he will pick her.

First though, she will concede and bring the party together. Her being VP is a separate issue.

You should see the horrible e-mails they are sending around about him. They are desperate and scared to death because they know he's going to win.

Hillary doesn't work like that anyway. The vice presidency won't be a quid pro quo for her to concede and release her delegates.

Roughly half of the "pundits" and "experts" on cable news are absolutely convinced that Hillary's trying to force her way onto the ticket; the other half are absolutely convinced she's not. I guess with all the news outlets out there, they have to blabber about SOMETHING.

What an intellectual circle jerk.

Yesterday Obama tried to point out the obvious - that everyone will know who his VP pick is when he freaking announces it. Same for McCain, whose choice isn't going to save him in November. Now I'm beginning to understand why MSNBC burns so much air time on prison shows. It's "experts" eventually run out of pertinent things to talk about.

LOL Yeah, it's a lucky thing we have prisons and pedophiles who stalk on the internet. Otherwise MSNBC would have to air their talking heads getting it wrong 24/7.

We'll know when we know, but my instinct tells me that Hillary wants something from Obama, just not the VP spot. Why would she? Unless she's going to play Cheney to Obama's Bush (and that ain't gonna happen), then VP is a major step down from senator in terms of affective legistlative power. She can do more good where she is... or in the cabinet, or on the Supreme Court for that matter.

Much of all that has transpired during the primaries was 'encouraged' by the media. Many Americans don't even get their news from MSNBC, CNN or FOX and are get their 'opinions' directly from CBS, NBC, ABC and their local commentators. Eventually, I hope, the public will declare they have had enough of this overt media manipulation and reclaim the right to think for themselves.

I've never seen so many conflicting statement come out of a campaign ON THE SAME DAY as out of hers. She wants it, she doesn't, she loves him, she loves him not... It's totally dysfunctional. Maybe that's partly why she lost.

Of course she isn't. Because she doesn't want to be hooked up to a loser. When Barack loses, she will have the high ground and be the presumptive nominee for the next time around. And Barack will lose. He is involved right now with trying to capture the votes and states that she strongly captured. He is fighting a battle within his own party. And, after months of daily press coverage he is still only in a statistical dead heat with McCain, a candidate even the republicans claim isn't very charismatic or strong.

She did not capture the states just look at her massive debt of $ 40 million. Apparently, Rush
Limbaugh urged Republicans to vote for Hillary and that is why her money does not match near
that of Obama's with $ 40 to his name. That is the only explanation since in her votes she was
not that far behind Obama.

Get a clue. Hill has been running a campaign essentially unopposed. BO has given her a free pass because he is a gentleman and a gracious winner. The GOP has not yet begun to campaign against her yet because they are still helping her get nominated.

Do you think her poll numbers will stay where they are when the GOP starts in on her?

BO is rising in the polls and he will take McSame in November, with or without you.

The way she's handling this is the way she handled her campaign: a mess. It was almost embarrassing to see Bob Johnson on CNN Wednesday morning practically threatening Obama if he didn't extend the VP invitation to Clinton. Then the next day the Clinton camp backtracks saying "oh no, we're not seeking the VP slot, no one speaks for Hillary but Hillary." Huh?? She STILL can't control her mouthpieces.

As the electin season progressed, I began to ask the question: how does she expect to run a country when she couldn't even successfully run a campaign??? It's like appointing someone as head of the Federal Reserve who can't even balance their checkbook. I'm a woman, and I was pulling for her at the beginning of the election season. But with the way she managed her run for prez, I'm embarrassed for her.

The fact that Barack put Caroline Kennedy on the VP selection committee is very indicative as to why Hillary will not be VP. Caroline endorsed Barack very early in this process. Remember also that Ted Kennedy said that Hillary will not be a suitable VP because she does not appeal to 'our higher selves". Caroline will make sure that Ted Kennedy's wishes are upheld. Obama too, being the Kennedy successor, will make sure that Ted's wishes are upheld. Barack is no simpleton, lightweight guy that people think they can pressure into doing what he doesn't want. Recognize how he is consolidating power and giving it to the people by saying that the Democratic Party will no longer take money from lobbyists. Kudos to Barack.

Caroline Kennedy may have supported Obama, but she has an impeccable reputation as someone with integrity and honesty. I have no doubt that Obama's team--like Obama himself--is taking the VP selection seriously, vetting meticulously, and not playing petty politics with the final choice.

I've been very impressed by his calm leadership, wisdom, and good judgement. Just a few days ago the Clinton insiders were on the warpath, trying to divide the party with VP demands, petitions, and angry media appearances.

Obama worked to diffuse all that, not be bullied, calm down all of HIS supporters, and show that we can still have confidence that he will do a good job with THIS step, too.

Frankly, this week I've been more impressed with him than ever. He's shown that not only can he WIN, but he knows how to use that victory, work to bring people to a better understanding, and calmly lead to a good end goal.

So impressive! I have no doubt that Hillary really IS on the short list, and that Obama's team really WILL carefully and dispassionately present him with a thoroughly vetted list to choose from in a few weeks.

In the meantime.....Patience!

Interesting theoretical outcome to ponder # 200,000,000:
Can anyone actually imagine the White House with Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton in it at the same time? Imagine the contrast: Hillary: dignified, stately, poised, pantsuited and regal while Ms. Obama wanders around in her sloppy, somewhat unflattering "I shop at Macy's. doesn't everyone?" dresses and grins broadly and chatters indiscreetly while loping along like a slightly bow-legged gazelle beside Obama The Great?. It would be a hilarious contrast.
Hillary would be queenly. Michelle would be Ms. Uncongeniality.
Imagine the two of them at a function together. Everyone would naturally defer to the Clintons. The Obamas would be the little gauche people on the sidelines.Think Ms. Obama will allow it? Not a chance! If Obama has the utter audacity of hoping to get Hillary on his ticket, he'll be in the dog-house forever.

Score:
Hillary: Graciously Coping
Obama: Audaciously Hoping

This is irrelevant, but Michelle Obama was on the Ten Best Dressed list last year. Her exquisite silk dresses do NOT look like they come from Macy's. And yes, I can imagine them next to the Clintons, the Obamas tall and graceful and filled with youthful energy. It will be great to have some true style in the White House again, something we haven't seen since the Kennedy administration.

I don't think it's irrelevant. Apparently nor do you, since you stopped to comment. I don't think the Obama's are "graceful". And my goodness, are you comparing Michelle to Jackie, who was the epitome of style? No contest. Michelle needs lessons in grooming and presentation. She also needs to make her demeanor more gracious and pleasant.
She tends to scowl and grin. And Mr. Obama twitches and scratches his chin far too much.

Hillary is the one that let her supporters float the VP so she could continue to get news coverage. I don't really see Obama picking her as his VP but if he does it will be his first big mistake. He is running in a general election now not a dem primary. I think he needs to be very careful about linking himself to Bill Clinton. He is still well liked to many dems but if Obama wants to run on change and the way things are done in Washington then he better put some distance between two of the biggest Washington insiders. I think he is already making a mistake that is going to used against him by talking about old timers like Biden and others that have been in Washington forever. I am a big supporter of Obama but I have to say that I am a little peeved by some of the talk coming from him in the last couple of days because he is begining to sould like every other politician. I also didn't like the secret meeting and the way they did it. I know they had to talk but he could have been up front about it instead of pulling a Bush. If he is going to start being secretive about things now will this carry over in the WH?

Bill Clinton disgraced the presidency when he was in office, and has disgraced the stature of former president since he left. He has cashed in for muti-millions at the expense of our nations interests abroad. He is a dishonest, selfs-serving, arrongant manipulator.

In this campaign, the Clintons have revealed ther severe lack of character, their self-centered ness, and fundamental greed to large numbers of Americans who once supported them

History will judge Clinton as the president who played with an intern, lied under oath, got impeached, sold influence, tried to bully his wife into the presidency, and used race baiting to try and destroy one of the most inspiring presidential candidates in history.

And of course, I can't get along without reading "HUFF." Good job people !

BARACK AND HILLARY'S MEETING ON RFK'S ASSASSINATION ANNIVERSARY.

The Barack and Hillary meeting last night was on the ominous day of Bobby Kennedy's assassination by a fanatical Palestinian gunman. LIke RFK Obama and Clinton are anti-war candidates. LIke RFK they are U.S. senators. Like RFK Hillary is a senator from New York and related to a former president. RFK was murdered by Sirhan Sirhan who was born in 1944-the 44th year of the 20th century the number of the next president.

Hillary was born in Chicago, Obama resides there. RFK's campaign stop after the California primaries was to be Chicago the site of the disastrous Democratic Convention and anti-war riots.

In 1968 Mitt Romney's father George ran in the Republican presidential primaries and lost to Richard Nixon, like Mitt lost to John McCain. It was Nixon who ended the war and freed McCain from prison.

If Bobby Kennedy had lived he would have beat Nixon and become president. If Hillary had beat Obama in the primaries she would have went on to defeat McCain in the fall as she is clearly more electable. Her loss to Obama prefigures his defeat as RFK's assassination prefigured the defeat of Hubert Humphrey 40 years ago.

It is interesting to note that Obama gave his victory speech at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis-St. Paul, the home of Hubert Humphrey when he ran for president.

Funny how no one is mentioning this. Barack is having to win over members of his own party who voted for Hillary in millions. Meanwhile he has gotten nothing but good daily press and thousands of media opportunities. Yet he is still in a statistically dead heat with MCain. McCain isn't even close to being as charismatic so there is something going on and if I was a democrat I would be sweating bullets right now.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Interesting.......the bottom line is that Obama is defeated by senile man at war with himself and everything he ever believed in........would you like to read palms? no? how about the times that Lincoln lived with a Kennedy and Kennedy lived with a Lincoln..??? I love presidential trivia and consider myself an amateurish expert on the subject......but where did I hear this theme before?

You just thought about this all by your lonesome, eh????ROFL
