WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

Story continues below

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters _ the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York _ switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

Clin tons are pure poison to the Democrats and it is due to their own actions over and over.

Hil lary is just not mentally balanced at all as we've all witnessed. She's drawn the bigots and equally unbalanced into her cult as we witness here and there but so be it. Focus on the 95% decent and sane folks please.

ENOUGH with the Hil lary headlines ... she is yesterdays paper, old news, a tired old school sociopath politician.

Leave Obama to figuring his VP choice and it will take time. The vast good folks of this nation can see the Man is extremely smart, decent and honest ... so foreign to the bulk of our politcos but we are waking up. Anyone considering McBush is either a bigot, easily manipulated by fear and hate or a war profiteer ... we cannot help them.

How are the Clinton's poison to the party? Did you live through the 90s when the budget was balanced, unemployment was at a low, gas prices were not through the roof? And all this was done with a Republican ruled congress. Seriously-I am voting for Obama but you better lay off Clinton because we need her supporters.

I lived through the nineties and watch Bill Clinton deregulate everything he could put pen to, thus continuing Reagan's policies and setting the country up for the financial crisis and corporate corruption we have today. I watched the number of people requesting food at the food banks in my city swell after welfare "reform" was passed. I heard about the thousands of people dying in Iraq because of his sanctions, which accomplished nothing but murder. I watched as he sat by while genocide was happening in Africa. I watched as he lost control of Congress. What, exactly, did the Clintons accomplish in the long run that benefited the average American citizen? Yes, he balanced the budget, which was a good thing, largely because he was pushed to do so by the Republicans. Yes, the economy was booming because of the high tech boom, for which he was not responsible. But Bill Clinton did absolutely nothing to insure longterm improvement in the lives of average Americans and he ended up inflaming the right wing because he essentially took their policies.

Bill was a good President. Hillary ran an awful, unethical campaign.

And the plural of Clinton is Clintons , not Clinton's .

I can't wait for the books to come out detailing the behind scenes of HRC's campaign and especially the last remaining days. I wonder how soon these top people can begin writing.

They are probably already writing, each hoping to be the first with a book.

Here's how the conversation is going . . .
Hillary: I'm not asking to be your Vice President, but you may now ask me.
Obama: Well, thank you but I need to weigh my options.
Hillary: OK, I'll sweeten the pot. I promise to campaign for us, maybe.
Obama: Hmmm . . . sounds tempting but . . .
Hillary: One more offer. I'll let you pay off my campaign debt but you have to pay me what I owe myself with interest.
Obama: I'm really not sure . . .
Hillary: Absolute LAST offer. You can have me, my baggage, my debt, my delusion (I really did win you know), AND . . . I'll throw in my husband. He's a GREAT campaigner.

Why are we still even talking about Mrs. Day-Before-Yesterday's News? Go away, Madame Inevitable. Turns out that you're not as inevitable as you convinced the media hacks to proclaim you to be.

Um I'm tired of Hilary at times myself but vanish HECK NO! She better be on that campaign trail 5 times a week stumping for Obama. She better do everything she can to get him elected or she will have a frosty reception when she gets back to NY.

I,personally believe Hillary would be better suited for Health and Human Services. She could head up the New Universal Health Care Program. This has been her wish for years....Now is the time for her to be the Champion of it. I believe she can mesh her plan with Obamas and come out with a plan that helps us all.

Sure, she did such a heck-uv-a job the first time. LOL

She did work hard on it and learned a lot. The main problem with the plan "the first time" was the lack of support and the smear campaign against it by the big companies that felt threatened by it. I would strongly support her being named as head of HHS.

Hillary did not say that she does not want to be vice president. She said that she is seeking the vice presidency. The reason that she is not seeking it is that she wants it. Someone told her that seeking it would prevent her from getting it because it would put pressure on Obama, and he cannot afford to succumb to pressure and look weak. But now that she is not seeking it, Hillary hopes, he will give it to her. He presumably knows better, and realizes (1) putting Hillary on the ticket will cost him more votes from independents and Republicans than it will gain him from disgruntled Hillary supporters, and (2) a candidate with military experience will take away McCain's strongest selling point.

I'm sure that she would have jumped at the chance but the vetting of her husband with
the required list of donors to his library, would no doubt be the spoke in the wheel
of his "legacy" and most likely the end of her political career too. Must be a lot of
satisfied donors there, nobody willing to come forward means that all their promises
were fulfilled. One of these days..........

I believe Clinton has hurt herself because of her unsportsmanlike conduct. She has a lot to do to win my respect back.

Clinton was using her 18 million "plus" as a wedge to get VP and it crumbled when members of her own camp wanted her to end her campaign. But now her camp is saying they never demanded Hillary to be VP. What was Bob Johnson doing Wed. morning, what was Stephanie Tubbs doing yesterday?
Writing memos / letters/ petitions to make Hillary VP with her blessing. Did you guys watch the Dan Abrams show last night? He is suck a pawn it's not even funny. Tuesday night he was saying Hillary need time but she could have said something about Obama making an Histric Night but for the last 2 nights he has been punked down by her supporter saying I also said she needs time for herself.

And, why doesn't he allow folks from the Huffington Post to speak or answer his question before he cuts them off? Because he knows he's going to get the truth rather than the other shills saying what he wants them to say.

did anyone realise that with his win in Montana by a far far larger margin of votes than she won South Dakota, he passed her in popular vote by any calculation except giving her all the votes in Michigan and giving him none?

I notice Wolf Blitzer has not again shown that thing he had been showing illustrating the popular vote to show that she had won it in all but one method of calculation.

Election 2008. History in the making. Convention states that the winner of a primary election gets to choose his or her running mate. Could it be that Barak Obama may reach out to Hillary Clinton and appoint her as VP? If yes, then who will be Secretary of State , John Edwards? Who knows? Right now there is a list of names before the committee set up to make recommendations to Barak Obama. This is all conjecture of course.Whatever the choice is, it will be dramatic and for the good of the party. After an important announcemet by Hillary Clinton tomorrow the party will move on as a single entity .
The Democratic Party, is moving forward. Differences have been put aside for the good of the party.

Here's an idea: Let's not talk about it anymore until a VP offer is made to someone, and see who it is and if that person accepts it. Must we overshadow other important issues with talk of someone who will not be comfortable playing second fiddle to Obama and create a lot of tension in the White House.

Three words: Vetting of Bill. No way will Veep spot ever happen for Hillary. Either they will refuse to be vetted, or the vetting will uncover all those unsavory activities leading to that nice $110,000,000 income.
