Hillary Clinton has, in effect, converted her presidential campaign into a bid for the vice presidency, an unprecedented move and a high-risk gamble for a candidate in her position.

Both personally and through intermediaries, in an exceptionally direct appeal for a losing candidate, Clinton has openly signaled her interest in the number two spot - a post once said to be worth less than "a bucket of warm piss."

In an interview with The Washington Post, Clinton supporter and Black Entertainment Television network founder Robert Johnson said Clinton has authorized him and others to persuade Barack Obama to pick her.

"She said if asked to do this, she must accept because she believes that it is in the best interest of the party that the party come together and win in November," Johnson told the Post.

Hillary's approach violates the protocol of avoiding overt appeals normally associated with the vice presidential selection process. Asked how to conduct such a campaign, Jim Jordan, who served as John Kerry's campaign manager, responded "very, very carefully."

Traditionally, those seeking to be chosen by their party's nominee have tried to used more elliptical, methods of signaling their readiness to serve their country.

In 2004, for example, Gen. Wesley K. Clark, immediately upon ending his own bid for the presidency, endorsed John Kerry, telling Kerry's aides that the Massachusetts Senator was "my pick'' early on -- in a message whose meaning everyone understood.

Along similar lines that same year, Don Imus asked John Edwards ''You know, and I know, and everybody knows, you would be willing to take this in a heartbeat, so at what point would you be willing to say that?'' Edwards replied, ''I'm not going to say that on your show.''

In one of the more bizarre events in the history of vice presidential selection, Mike Gravel, who ran for president this year, nominated himself for vice president at the 1972 Democratic Convention on the ticket with George S. McGovern, losing to Thomas Eagleton, McGovern's choice, 1741.81 to 225.38.

Republican lawyer Ben Ginsberg was dismissive of the Clinton-generated boomlet for herself. "It's such an individual decision by the presidential candidate that it takes a Hillary to do it."

Ron Kaufman, a top aide to former President George H. W. Bush -- who served as Ronald Reagan's vice president for two terms -- said there is one guiding rule that anyone interested in the post should follow: "If you drool, you lose."

Former congressman Jack Kemp in 1980 and 1988 campaigned hard and got nothing. "My old boss [George H.W. Bush] did not worry about it and did whatever the Reagan folks asked him to do, and it all worked out," noted Kaufman. "Gerry Ford's folks, in '80 put on a big campaign for Ford to be 'co-President.' That backfired."

In the more distant past, there were rare occasions when vice presidents were picked in open competition for delegate support at the national conventions.

Former Democratic Party and South Carolina Democratic chairman Don Fowler, who has an encyclopedic memory, noted two cases:

"In 1944, FDR did not want incumbent vice president Henry Wallace to be on the ballot. He left the field open; there was sort of a campaign between Harry Truman and Jimmy Byrnes of South Carolina. Truman won. In 1956, Adlai Stevenson threw open to the convention the selection of the VP. Senator Jack Kennedy ran against C. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. Kefauver won."

Although it is certainly unusual for a candidate to begin publicly running for vice president before withdrawing from the presidential contest, this may be the moment when Clinton has the most leverage, presenting herself as the one person who could significantly heal the divisions now running deep in the party.

White women, especially older white women, are one of Obama's problematic constituencies and Clinton has done very well among them.

A survey conducted at the end of May by the Pew Research Center on the People and the Press found:

"Hillary Clinton continues to garner the majority of support among some segments of the Democratic base. In particular, 57 percent of white women favor Clinton as the party's nominee, while just 38 percent favor Obama....

"Obama's diminished popularity and support among white women may in part be an indication of a growing backlash against him among Clinton's women supporters. The survey finds that as many 39 percent of Clinton's female supporters believe that her gender has hurt her candidacy. In turn, favorable opinions of Obama have tumbled among women who support Clinton - from 58 percent in March to 43 percent currently."

These findings suggest that Clinton may right now be in the best position she ever will be to make the case that adding her to the ticket offers an opportunity to bring these Democratic voters back to the fold.

As speculation about Clinton's interest in the vice presidency spread, her campaign issued a statement designed to quiet the controversy:

"While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her. The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

As Johnny Cochran would say " If you can't vet, you should forget" The likelyhood of Clinton opening up his records about the Library are zero. I even wonder if as a Supreme Court nominee that information could be relevent. Anthony Zinni would seem to be a good choice for VP

It is my opinion that her megalomaniac approach is not in the best interest of Obama or the country for that matter. I certainly would not have voted for her and while I might vote for him, with her on the ticket it is a complete and total no go for me.

Oh no!!! The reason her numbers were as good as they were is because she BASHED Obama. Had she run a fair, clean, decent campaign, I doubt she would have gotten such strong votes from women. She smeared him to win votes. I am a white 40something woman, Barak, you have my vote WITHOUT Hillary on your ticket!

Well, the most recent news seems to indicate that HRC won't get her wish to be Obama's running mate. Like so many other Obamaites, I hope to God that is indeed the case.

There are so many reasons why she doesn't deserve it:

a) Being the first, through surrogates, to inject race into what, up until then, had been a post-race race. As a consequence, Obama was left open to right-wing attack on J. Wright; the Right will undoubtedly try and use this against him in the general election as well; these are exactly the kinds of wedge issues that Republicans gain traction on.

b) Declaring Obama naive on foreign policy when she voted to authorize this fraudalent, tragic war; and being dismissive of the notion that we should engage our enemies, not simply bomb them and thier children to kingdom come. Lets us not forget that she would even countenance nuclear war.

c) Floating the heinous idea of Obama's assasination as a reason for staying in the race until June, and then, when criticized, saying that we misunderstood her. Personally, I don't think she's truly interested in being VP; she simply realizes that if Obama were assasinated, she'd then become president.

d) Whining-again through surrogates like her husband-that's she's been the victim of mysogny. The only reason she's aware of any will, is because of the blogosphere, and people's righteous indignation at her unwillingness to play by the rules of electoral politics.

e) Giving J.McSame rave reviews and Obama "just" a speech;
f) deploying Bill criss-cross country coding racial fear hyperbole.

"Everybody needs to settle down, we just completed this arduous process," Obama told CNN's Candy Crowley. "It's only been two days, and I think its not just in my interest and Senator Clinton's interest, but in the Democratic Party's interest and the country's interest, to make sure I make this decision well."

And for anyone hoping Clinton will be VP, there are two very plain reasons that it just won't happen:

1) She said repeatedly that McCain would make a better Cmdr. in Chief than Obama. The RNC is already using video of her saying that. Bridge Burned.

2) Vetting her as VP would require Bill Clinton to reveal a whole buncha stuff that he won't, the the list of donors to his Library.

Don't thnk this is a wise idea. He needs someone less likely to take the spotlight from him; think they would be wise to come up with some way to combine forces for the election campaign but this isn't it.

She probably won't end up being his veep due to Bill Clinton's refusal to release his library and foundation donors. Obama cannot have a huge surprise with his running mate. It has to be "laid out on the table" before he chooses.

Hillary's supporter's are riding this 18 mil to death. I don't believe they will desert the democratic party. I have read many different web blogs, so many different media sight's, her supporters for the most part are angry at her for not acknowledging 'history' in the making by his opponant. They are scathing with NY times blog's toward her, in fact have a web site wanting her out of the position representing NY. And most are women voters. So to say this about her ownership of 18 mil voter's is likely the staff of her campaign perhaps some sprinkled around each state, but not overwhelming as she claims.

I hope someone could do the stats on this to undermine her message. Women were not her forte' when she started campaigning. Now it's a movement???? As a woman, I don't think women are that stupid Hillary.

A pro-life VP? that is one way to appeal to some center right independents, but it will certainly not be an engaging ticket for pro-choice democrats.

No way.

First, he's a very strongly conservative man.

Second, what does it say to Democratic voters?
"I had to go outside the party to find a good VP."

Not gonna happen.

Clinton as VP would be a disaster;
a. She would bring her baggage and her husband's once again to the "PEOPLES" house, the drama would never end. Scandel after scandel would erupt.
b. She would demand to have a "Coalition Presidency", undermining him at every turn. She is a control freak, who would ruin Obama's integrity. Her husband would be sneaking into the oval office again with a box of cigars.
c. They both have a date in November (I believe), with the CA court, along with many of their associate's for CAMPAIGN FRAUD.
d. Clinton has already angered many leaders in foreign country's re: Russia made a comment a few month's ago, slapping her down, so did British, Iran. Probably many more. Canadians dislike her immensely.
She really is not the most 'balanced' candidate for the job. Both Clinton's have a stability and 'reality' problem.

Clinton' supporters......If you are a democrat and your candidate lost the nomination, why would you vote for McCain??? What is it that Barack Obama has done to you, or that you do not agree with?? Or is it his colour, his name, his faith, his message, his integrity, his honesty, his temperament, his wife, his followers, his staff, his supporters, his friends......Now, what do you love about Hillary???? A woman???? Strange!!!!!

Well, as a Clinton supporter who won't vote for Obama, your post (and the thousands like it) are reason enough not to vote for Obama.

You make a number of bad remarks:

(1) You say that she will "demand" a coalition presidency. How do you know this? How do you know she is a "control freak"? You don't, but you seem really convinced that she will.

(2) You are wrong about the "court date" for campaign fraud.

(3) You act as if we should care about how Russia feels towards Hillary. Jeeze, that's the last thing one should worry about when picking a president: how some autocratic government feels about a candidate they barely know!

I will vote for John McCain in November. Obama speaks of post-partisanship, but has NEVER acted on it. John McCain has. If your counterargument is that McCain is now a Republican and won't do anything, you are just wrong and delusional. He was part of the Gang of 14, not Obama, yet they were part of the same Senate. (You, as a foreigner, probably don't know anything about this). I am a man and well to do. I would rather keep a lot of my money and not pay ridiculously high taxes under Obama than vote for a candidate with supporters like you. It's that simple and emotive, but it's worth it.

I have made allowances for Hil'lary's supporters (the average voter and not the paid staff and surrogates who should go to h.ell along with the C.lintons). They just haven't been following events closely enough to realize that the C.lintons have been caught dead to rights.

Anytime you start questioning your own judgment and start to feel guilty, that maybe you've been too harsh on Hil'lary and B'ill, go back and review, revisit how this campaign has unfolded (see the videos at YouTube, and the archives at the media websites) and you'll kick yourself for not realizing earlier they are everything their critics have said they are, and more.

There is no question that the C.lintons need to be ushered out of the public stage, out of government and off to private life. I'd like to see the other politicians who have vouched for them, vetted them, also escorted off the public dole.
