Hillary Clinton has, in effect, converted her presidential campaign into a bid for the vice presidency, an unprecedented move and a high-risk gamble for a candidate in her position.

Both personally and through intermediaries, in an exceptionally direct appeal for a losing candidate, Clinton has openly signaled her interest in the number two spot - a post once said to be worth less than "a bucket of warm piss."

In an interview with The Washington Post, Clinton supporter and Black Entertainment Television network founder Robert Johnson said Clinton has authorized him and others to persuade Barack Obama to pick her.

"She said if asked to do this, she must accept because she believes that it is in the best interest of the party that the party come together and win in November," Johnson told the Post.

Hillary's approach violates the protocol of avoiding overt appeals normally associated with the vice presidential selection process. Asked how to conduct such a campaign, Jim Jordan, who served as John Kerry's campaign manager, responded "very, very carefully."

Traditionally, those seeking to be chosen by their party's nominee have tried to used more elliptical, methods of signaling their readiness to serve their country.

In 2004, for example, Gen. Wesley K. Clark, immediately upon ending his own bid for the presidency, endorsed John Kerry, telling Kerry's aides that the Massachusetts Senator was "my pick'' early on -- in a message whose meaning everyone understood.

Along similar lines that same year, Don Imus asked John Edwards ''You know, and I know, and everybody knows, you would be willing to take this in a heartbeat, so at what point would you be willing to say that?'' Edwards replied, ''I'm not going to say that on your show.''

In one of the more bizarre events in the history of vice presidential selection, Mike Gravel, who ran for president this year, nominated himself for vice president at the 1972 Democratic Convention on the ticket with George S. McGovern, losing to Thomas Eagleton, McGovern's choice, 1741.81 to 225.38.

Republican lawyer Ben Ginsberg was dismissive of the Clinton-generated boomlet for herself. "It's such an individual decision by the presidential candidate that it takes a Hillary to do it."

Ron Kaufman, a top aide to former President George H. W. Bush -- who served as Ronald Reagan's vice president for two terms -- said there is one guiding rule that anyone interested in the post should follow: "If you drool, you lose."

Former congressman Jack Kemp in 1980 and 1988 campaigned hard and got nothing. "My old boss [George H.W. Bush] did not worry about it and did whatever the Reagan folks asked him to do, and it all worked out," noted Kaufman. "Gerry Ford's folks, in '80 put on a big campaign for Ford to be 'co-President.' That backfired."

In the more distant past, there were rare occasions when vice presidents were picked in open competition for delegate support at the national conventions.

Former Democratic Party and South Carolina Democratic chairman Don Fowler, who has an encyclopedic memory, noted two cases:

"In 1944, FDR did not want incumbent vice president Henry Wallace to be on the ballot. He left the field open; there was sort of a campaign between Harry Truman and Jimmy Byrnes of South Carolina. Truman won. In 1956, Adlai Stevenson threw open to the convention the selection of the VP. Senator Jack Kennedy ran against C. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. Kefauver won."

Although it is certainly unusual for a candidate to begin publicly running for vice president before withdrawing from the presidential contest, this may be the moment when Clinton has the most leverage, presenting herself as the one person who could significantly heal the divisions now running deep in the party.

White women, especially older white women, are one of Obama's problematic constituencies and Clinton has done very well among them.

A survey conducted at the end of May by the Pew Research Center on the People and the Press found:

"Hillary Clinton continues to garner the majority of support among some segments of the Democratic base. In particular, 57 percent of white women favor Clinton as the party's nominee, while just 38 percent favor Obama....

"Obama's diminished popularity and support among white women may in part be an indication of a growing backlash against him among Clinton's women supporters. The survey finds that as many 39 percent of Clinton's female supporters believe that her gender has hurt her candidacy. In turn, favorable opinions of Obama have tumbled among women who support Clinton - from 58 percent in March to 43 percent currently."

These findings suggest that Clinton may right now be in the best position she ever will be to make the case that adding her to the ticket offers an opportunity to bring these Democratic voters back to the fold.

As speculation about Clinton's interest in the vice presidency spread, her campaign issued a statement designed to quiet the controversy:

"While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her. The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

I find it opportunistic that the same person who stoked gender and race divisions in the party is now insisting only she can heal them. BAH! See if McCain wants her for VP!

It's abuse. Your abuser attacks and attacks, then says if you do this, the attacks will stop. The Democratic party is used to being abused by now, but usually not by one of their own, Hillary.

I cannot imagine how Obama could possibly consider for a single moment to grant such an ambition, - at least provided he doesn't recognise it for a blackmail.

Let's remember: Four years ago, the conservative spin machine managed to call out Kerry for the charges and objections pre-coined against him by his then-veep-pick Edwards, from the primary season. Comparatively mild and above stereotype-level as they had been.

And now think of how much Clinton has unloaded against Obama.

I guess the GOP can gladly forgo to further lift a finger in a campaign that will be full to bursting by just the MSM rehearsing what HRC had said or implied against BHO. The former could by her very presence on the ticket make sure that what she - desolately, we are sure - anticipated about the latter's luck in the general election comes true.

Madness, sheer madness.

We can only hope - for the sake of himself, his country, and all those in whom he had inspired some hope that the Bush nightmare might be reversible - that Obama has some sense of self-preservation.

Obama will announce his choice for V.P. soon enough. Meanwhile, shouldn't the focus be turning to John McCain? (He's the RP's candidate, you know).

The Let's-Bomb-Iran crowd is plutzing. Their wet dreams of Greater Israel are eroding, as are their fervent desire to complete the genocide against the Palestinians. Their leaders are out of control, charged with bribery and rape. What to do!!

I have always thought the best choice for a Vice President is someone who hopes the presidential nominee is assassinated. This way she can guarantee she'll be president after all. Real class.
Other criteria are that the VP hopeful has a husband who promises faithfully to abuse the office just like he did when he was president; It also helps if the husband is trailertrash with the commensurate vocabulary to accompany that background. There must also be copious proof of fraud, including refusal to be accountable for the millions he "honestly" and "legally wink wink" acquired. Both the VP hopeful and her husband must be friendly individuals who never use racism to substantiate their claims. She must be a liar especially when padding her resume with stories of heroism during battle, especially in places like Bosnia. She also must be fined at least $35K from the FEC for lying aboiut contributions. She must be able to cry real tears when trying to gain sympathy for any reason like say, fairness. She must never allow anyone to change the rules after signing their names on said rules.
All said and done, Hillary stands an excellent chance.

It's so obvious. Hillary wants the spot but cannot muster the courage to humble herself and even let the Obama camp know that she will concede on Saturday.

Instead, she tells the media and lets them do the work. In this case, she is letting her surrogates run around trying to promote a joint ticket, instead of picking up the phone and having a conversation. She feels it is beneath her to be humble about it, and that's why she is the worst possible choice for the No.2 spot.

Her cult leader mentality will overshadow Obama's message and character, the Clintons are too much of a distraction. Look at all the stories speculating about what she will do, and she has already lost! Once the hype dies down she will realize that she isn't getting into the White House on Obama's coattails. The arrogance is stunning.

This is an absurdly awful PR move for the Democratic party. Increasing public pressure for Obama to select Hillary will a) make Obama look weak if he gives in, a terrible perception for someone running for president, and b) piss off her supporters if Obama doesn't select her, potentially alienating them even further. Considering Obama's relationship with a lapel pin, it's quite clear that he doesn't like being told what he HAS to do. Any appeals should be done in major privacy, with grace and openness. Putting your surrogates on the record with the Washington Post is not the way to unite the party. DUMB MOVE.

Most of the Democrats in my area who were voting for Clinton were doing so on the basis of bad information and a lack of understanding on what she now represents. Her electability and popularity are vastly over rated. Clinton's unquenchable thirst for power is worrying.
She would be a disastrous running mate for Obama because of her baggage she carries and her role as a right wing lightening rod.
She is a poor choice in these days of veeps on steroids because her positions, especially on foreign policy are antithetical to what Obama has stated he states for. .
Someone should remind the next president that Cheney was in direct violation of the Constitution in his role as an active member of the goverment.. The only job the Constitution gives the vice president is to take over the duties of the president if he is incapacitated or dead.
Though a case could be made for Bush being incabable of carrying out the duties of president, the fact that no one has bothered to do so means Cheney exceeding his brief.
It will take a Constitutional amendment to change that; ratification by 2/3 of the states.

You know, I really don't have a problem with Hillary being the VP selection... the part that gives me pause is that Obama would have to face questions about how his own VP is on the record saying he is unqualified to be commander in chief, and her husband the former president calling him a "fairy tale". I think in this instance, it's really her own words that disqualify her. And it's really a shame, because without that I think they could make a pretty good team.

Senator Clinton is not walking back from this ... she's being FORCED back by her supporters (i.e. Rangel, etc.). It wasn't a blunder. Her campaign asked her not to make the speech she gave on Tuesday, but she insisted on giving a speech that totally disregarded and disrespected the outcome of the election and Senator Obama's victory. Even now, she has only "suspended" her campaign, which suggests that this too is a calculated move on her part.

She simply cannot accept defeat, and though the greater onus of healing the party is on her, she merely aggravates the division. If this does not finally show her supporters who she is, and that she's in this for herself, I don't know what will!

Don't despair, Ann -- America really is ready for a woman, just not old Hillary with all that ancient baggage. I knew it was over when she appeared before her old classmates at Yale in sheepskin vest and bell-bottom jeans, and one of the old ladies shouted excitedly: "You look so 1972, dear!" -- Yuck.

Speculation about HRC as Veep is moronic.

HRC would completely undermine Obama's foreign policy positions.

End of Story.

Vinny, she would completely undermine ALL of his policy positions, period. She would be a huge liability that would utterly destroy his presidency. He would be a one term president.
