WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters _ the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York _ switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

The DNC just does not get it "Security is issue no# 1" his tacticts of divisiveness and disenfranchisement are dangerous. We prefer and find more effective to strenghthen our friendships and alliances.
Thank You DNC we will all suffer together as we say good bye to this lost opportunity.
And stop with this unified party. We are first and foremost Americans, always.
If you're going to have a tough job convincing your loyalists, good luck with the rest of the electorate. Anyway it will be to my advantage, I will not cry in November. I will cry in June.

Dear Orangepetal,

Please sit back and review the situation. O'Bama is skilled at negotiation - look at his record in Chicago. He does not want to stay in a war without end - too many lives are being lost or broken and the deficit is incredible. Yes, security is an issue, but not when it bankrupts our country. Presently our country is bankrupt morally, because of McCain's alliance with bush. He is a fanatic about staying at war. Is this what you really want for the rest of your life? Do you have children that will be adversely affected by staying at war -- or is it ok for other people's children to be sacrificed? As long as we are at war, no person is safe ... abroad ... or here.

You say you will not cry in November? Believe me if you vote for McCain you will cry much sooner after the election.

What are you talking about? The only divisiveness and disenfranchisement has been issued by Clinton in friendly fire that caused her campaign's suicide, her constant harping upon negatives and scorning of her fellow candidate turning many away from her who had supported her before.

Nothing was taken from her--she earned her loss, behaving in a manner that made her closest supporters question her character and motivation.

No opportunity has been lost. Hillary was not the right politician to follow the current administration, as she is enamored of Big Brother legislation and seeks to undermine First Amendment rights and more, and possesses poor politial judgment and overriding ambition to such an extent that she didn't bother to read the Intel, even though that was her job, before authorizing an unneccessary, unconstitutional, and (to reiterate) illegal war.

The right thing for our nation and the world is an American leader with good judgment who carefully researches before acting, heeds the advice of experts and listens to all sides, is familiar with the Constitution and International laws and treaties, respects not just human rights but also American liberties and morality, and believes in accountability, responsibility, and transparency in government.

That simply is not what Clinton offered, and hence we refused to accept her claims that only she can fix America when we know only WE can fix America; her way would have exacerbated the existing problem of power too centralized and people too marginalized.

What does Hillary want? Who cares, it is not about Hillary any more, get it? It's over, get used to it! How many more time does one have to repeat it? The reality is that it should never have been about her. Perhaps that was wrong with her campaign. Bill talked about Hillary, Chelsea talked about her Mom. It was always about Hillary, while Obama's campaign was always about the future of the country from the very beginning.

The one thing that Barack definitely does not need in his Presidential campaign this Summer and
Fall is to have to deal with all of the baggage that would come along with Hillary 's being chosen
as his running mate. God-forbid, if she were chosen as such, the media and the GOP would go
through them (Hil and Bill) would fine toothed combs, exposing all of their many indescretions,
under-handed deeds and other crimes. I think Barack is too sharp to allow a blunder like that to occur . Besides, it's Barack who is responsible for deciding upon the Democratic agenda dur-
ing the campaign, not alcohol swigging Hillary nor finger pointing Bill. The Clinton's day in the
sun came and went long ago. Barack Obama is now the star of, not only, the Democratic
Party, but, also, of the United States. If the Clintons had any class at all, they'd take a back-
seat and let Barack run the show from here on in.

Obviously in last night's meeting, Obama wanted to make the polite move to clear the air end explain her possible role in the fall campaign, in view of the wild speculations of the last couple of days. She will now be able to tell her followers on Saturday that she no longer seeks the Vice Presidency and wishes to pursue a different political career.

The Democratic Party needs to realize it has a serious problem - Clinton supporters are extremely angry. I was just on the HillaryClinton.com website reading the blog and it amazes me how many people are willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces by voting for Senator McCain. A large amount of the women and some men have switched party affiliations from Democrat to Independent. As an Non-Affliated Voter myself, I do not believe it is anyone's business what party I believe in, I have no problem with people switching from one party to another. As a matter of fact, I advocate for additional party affiliation besides Republican or Democratic. I believe this country will never get back to its level of previous greatness unless we dethrone the current 2 party system.

That said, the level of anger and selective memory the Clinton supporters express on Senator Clinton's website is astonishing. They truly believe the nomination was stolen by the DNC and handed to Senator Obama because of sexism. They do not acknowledge that Senator Clinton was in the same position as Senator Obama - the only way either of them could win was if the Superdelegates swarmed to one or the other with their votes. The list goes on and on.

They are joining groups like PUMA (People United Means Action) to try to force the DNC to nominate Hillary Clinton for President so that her voters can be recognized, heard and respected because they feel disenfranchised.

Losing is never easy. People tend to grasp for reasons, and keep looking for someone to blame for the outcome. Why did Hillary not get enough delegates? Her failed strategy relied entirely on the big states with the whopping numbers of delegates. But that only works if you get landslides everywhere. If you just get 55%, your opponent still gets 45% every time.

Did Bill help or not? Of course it did, for without him she would never have been a candidate in the first place. But his presence during the campaign probably did not help, for it was a constant reminder that the campaign was about the past, and not about the future.

About as much as it did in 1992 when some relatively unknown mid-40's Governor of Arkansas won the Dem nomination even though he was running 3rd in the polls at that time.

Do you think Clinton would believe in polls when they said she was losing? If polls now showed Obama would lose and Clinton would win in the GE, do you think her behavior after Tuesday would have anything to do with it? It's just like you have a two-head snake jumping around, thank to Hillary, the self centered and egocentric loser.

Let's hope the content of the meeting bodes TRUTHS afterwards. Let's hope Hillary agrees to SPECIFICS --- and adhere to promises. However, if NOT ---- that's her. Coming directly from a one-on-one, could use up the rest of the patience. This country is in such disarray ---- the games have to END.

Then again ---- is she capable of HONESTY?

Y'know, the recent outbreak of semi-literate posters here makes me kind of long for the good ol' days before the Huff Post went viral and was a still a "best kept secret" of those damned elitists.

And while I do understand that any uptick in numbers is undoubtedly good for business, maybe requiring those little pauses for reflection before posts go live on Myspace known as "Captchas" - though I personally loathe them - isn't such a bad idea. I have no solid data to back this up but I believe it might at least be worth a try as sort of a blunt-edged IQ test or something.

She has put the blame for her lose on every one , but herself and she gave all that to her supporters and they believed her. The only way to bring them in is through kindness and be graciouse as we can. try to understand their lose, and stop being cruel and rude to them.

Thanks, Volvo...

I suggest we all take a few minutes and read; REALLY read, jupitor's comment. It is something to be taken to heart. I have read it three times now, What "jupitor" says makes a lot of sense !!!

Next time a Hillary supporter is being confrontational, let's try to ecercise some judgement, ok?? What if the roles were reversed; how would we be feeling ??

And it's not just that their candidate lost...they were lied to, and were never prepared for this loss !!! This is not the way to run a political campaign...and it's up to us and our nominee to bring them into the fight for the WH - after all; it's their WH too !!!

My "judgment" and experience tells me that when bullies make threats, the only response that ends it is to push back. So whenever a shrieker shows up spewing "I'll show YOU. I'm voting for McCain!!!" my response will always be, "Then do it and shut up about it. Hillary won't be blackmailed by you and neither will the party."

That's not "hating," it's psychology 101.

I agree complete with both of you.

For several days I've been making the point that those of us who supported Sen Obama should look to Clinton supporters who are NOT boycotting Obama and encourage them to communicate with the disgruntled Clinton supporters explaining to them the cost of letting personal feelings over-shadow the issues & policies of the general election.

The moderate Clinton supporters who understand Sen Clinton's complicity in creating and furthering the divide in our party and are not hesitating to now support Sen Obama will be better able to talk to the angry segment of supporters - they are angry and, given the circumstance, they have ever right. The direction of their anger is misdirected, though.

I haven't had the chance to go back and check my posts to see if I attracted the ire of any angry Clinton supporters, so I don't know how the concept is going over.

Part of it is the pain in the butt it is to check postings - does anybody else agree?

I went over to HillaryIs44.com thinking I would do just that, but reading the lies and vitriol over there just made my eyes water. There is no point in talking to those people.

Hillary is planted the seeds of lies. Only she can fix that. That is her task right now: to tell her supporters the truth.

Obama did not steal this nomination. Obama is not a sexist. Obama did not treat her disrespectfully. 100% of Michigan votes would not have put H over the top.

Hillary, that is your task now: taking back all your lies. It's huge. Go for it.
