Webb

Jim Webb, one of Congress' fastest rising Democrats and a Senator believed to occupy a spot on Barack Obama's vice presidential short list, is slated to throw his support behind the Illinois Democrat on Thursday, introducing Obama at a rally in Bristol, Virginia.

And while the event is designed to help Obama appeal to a portion of the country -- Appalachia and, more specifically, Virginia -- that could prove crucial in the general election, in an interview Wednesday with The Huffington Post, Webb showed off the political attributes he brings to the national campaign table.

On several key domestic and foreign policy issues, the Virginia Democrat offered persuasive defenses of Obama, in the process taking swipes at his presumed Republican counterpart.

"John McCain's comment about Barack not having sat down recently with General Petreaus means nothing," Webb said. "If you know who to listen to, if you know how to make judgments, if you know how evaluate information, you can do that. I don't think Franklin Roosevelt was ever at the front in France during WWII in order to help end the war."

On the other major foreign policy debate of the day -- whether or not a president should talk to hostile foreign leaders -- Webb again offered up a historical defense.

"Under the right circumstances, you have to [talk to your enemies]," he said. "My model for Iran is China in 1971. China was a nuclear power, it was a rogue state, it had American war on its border with Vietnam, it was spouting the same kind of hostile rhetoric. We took none of our military options off the table, we abandoned none of our alliances, but we reached out in a aggressive way diplomatically to bring China into the world community."

Webb has stayed religiously neutral throughout the Democratic primary, but is seen as a natural complement to an Obama presidency. Beyond reaching a set of voters with whom the presumptive Democratic nominee has had difficulties (working class whites), the Virginia Democrat brings with him military and foreign policy experience, and the ability to say he was against the Iraq war (as well as the first Persian Gulf War) before it was launched.

"You don't want to be an occupying power in that part of the world," he said. "It flames the tensions."

Story continues below

There are, of course, some red flags. The Senator has been a critic of the Democratic Party in the past, having previously served in the Reagan administration but never in an overtly political capacity. Moreover, his appeal to female voters is complicated by past remarks he made questioning the promotion of females at the U.S. Naval Academy and referring to the investigation into the Navy's "Tailhook" sexual harassment scandal as a "witch hunt" -- statements for which he has apologized.

But Webb has also shown that he can win a race with these albatrosses hanging around his neck. And when asked how he responded to the issues being re-raised in a vice-presidential context, and what kind of advice he could offer Obama for the inevitable character attacks, he brushed the topic away.

"Barack Obama has a year and a half now of constant exposure to this sort of mentality," he said. "Scott McLellan talked about the kind of campaign culture. It is a nasty world. The rest of it is just stuff. The Karl Rove mentality is to try and attack you at your greatest strength and then try to show that you are not like the people voting for you. Those are the two major things that they do. And they tried five or six different things in my campaign. And I just had to write it off."

Perhaps the most complicated argument for choosing (or not choosing) Webb as a VP is his bluntness. Several weeks ago, as he was promoting his new book "A Time To Fight" the Senator raised eyebrows over his diagnosis of Obama's problems in Appalachia. Instead of offering the usual political platitudes, he spoke candidly about how the issue was not one of entrenched racism, but rather a backlash to the belief that affirmative action programs had been expanded to every disadvantaged group except low-income whites.

"It is pretty obvious that there are a lot of people, a preponderance of people, who were comfortable with the notion of affirmative action for African Americans," Webb elaborated. "Then affirmative action kind of grew into a diversity program for basically all ethnic minorities. I think that's when you started seeing a reaction among people who were less advantaged among white voters..."

Here too, however, the Senator had a plan. "The Republicans know how to appeal to this cultural group, the Democrats don't even know they exist," he said, referencing an Wall Street Journal op-ed he penned in 2004. "But if you can get the rural whites in this country at the same table as African Americans, it would be good for American politics. I think Barack Obama has the potential to do this."

i like Jim Webb and have followed his senate race. He's great on anyone's ticket. He has a fighter mentality and he knows how to avoid the "silly" things. As an African American, I'm glad about his comments on Appalac. Get the issues on the table, work on the issues and don't take them to another generation or time. This is the time, This is the moment. Let's get everyone to the table. We may not agree but we will walk away with more respect and more understanding for each other

I hope Barack has his eyes on hiring Richard Clark for his cabinet. This man is a true hero. He spoke up just before the 2004 election and, alas...the republican smear machine still worked.
But it was he who blew the doors wide open on this administration's digraceful behavior.

An Obama-Webb ticket has a lot of appeal. It would have geographic and racial balance. The presence of the war hero Webb could take some of the shine off John McBush's war hero image. And Webb could function as the attack dog while Obama maintained his air of being cool and calm and above the fray, which he does very well.

Its a tough call.......but I think HRC if chosen VP will have a long learning curve on tact; this is what Obama can teach her which she currently lacks. This will set her up in 2016.

It is too risky to alienate women, Hispanics and the middle income working class white demographics.

Are you freakin kidding me? This has t be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life.

If you vote for McCain just to prove you're not "elitist s,party loyalists or blacks" you're freakin insane.

You are also directly responsible for causing more deaths in Iraq, more people dying from not having affordable healthcare and the worsening of this country for your own selfish benefit. I don't care if you're mad Hillary Clinton lost and think it's because of sexism. Grow the heck up and do what's best for the country.

Enjoy screwing us all over! Thanks a lot jerk.

I have heard people on the right condemn Obama for the most frivolous of reasons but the one that irks me most is that he is willing to talk to our enemies without setting down previous conditions. It seems to me that up until now we have refused to do that and where has it gotten us? Nowhere. We always insist on the enemy's disarming itself or some other ridiculous thing before we will talk. We always want to be the bully on the block and we always are along with Israel. Obama has won the nomination. Get used to it. We should be backing him and not knocking him. Or would you rather continue with the Bush agenda, based on lies and deception?

I have tremendous respect for Senator Webb. I would probably support him for any position.

He would have my support for any position in the Obama administration. However, he might well be more effective in his current position than any of the others.

Trust Senator Webb and soon to be President Obama to make the wisest choice.

They will!

Semper Fi sir! And agree 100%, Sen Clinton needs to stay where she is also, need to maintain all the chairs currently in Dem hands - keep it tight. Also think if President Obama wants REAL change - his cabinet should cross party lines, need opposing views for deliberate conscious thought. He's got a list of smart VP candidates to choose from his own think tank, and from Sen. Clintons campaign for that matter. Hagle and Biden also come to mind.

Webb gets my vote for VP. He's not perfect, but he's a fighter, and well respected by get-things done
people in DC. He'll smooth his rough edges, and the nation will greatly appreciate his service.
HRC for Secretary of State. She'd kick ass all over the world, and represent us with exceptional dignity.
Ron Paul for Sec. of Treasury. A strict Constitutionalist, and impecable integrity.
Dahr Jamail for Sec. of Foriegn Affairs. An exceptional journalist who knows corruption through and
through, and knows more about Iraq and what's really going on then anyone.
John Kerry for Sec.of Defense- An exceptional leader who understands the military at its best. It also
would give him the chance to get his ROAR back, put those swift boat slobs back in their
bathroom stalls, and give us real leadership bringing back integrity to our military's purpose.

I rather like Richardson as VP and Edwards as Attorney General, a position he is supposed to covet.

A Rhodes Scholar and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner,

Wikipedia states about Wesley Clark:

Notable military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal ..., the Legion of Merit ..., the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star.

Clark supported the administration's War in Afghanistan ...but not the Iraq War. ...as a commentator on CNN he believed the United States was undermanned in Iraq, and ... the war was "never [about]... WMD or regime change," and "the connection to the War on Terrorism was not shown."

Clark ... said "I was pro-affirmative action, I was pro-choice, I was pro-education... I'm pro-health care... I was either going to be the loneliest Republican in America or I was going to be a happy Democrat." Clark saw the Democratic party,as standing for "internationalism", "ordinary men and women", and "fair play."...

He called for a repeal of recent Bush tax cuts for people earning more than $200,000 and suggested providing healthcare for the uninsured... He backed environmental causes promising to reverse "scaled down rules" the Bush administration had applied to the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts and dealing with global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Clark also proposed a global effort to strengthen American relations with other nations, reviewing the PATRIOT Act, and investing in homeland security. ...he put out a budget plan that claimed to save $2.35 trillion through a repeal of the Bush tax cuts and cutting government waste.

I had the honor to work for Wes Clark in Europe. I can say without reservation that he was one of the brightest men I have ever known. BUT Wes Clark was not a politician when he was a 4 Star General and quite frankly he's not a very good one now that he isn't. It would be a nice choice if I had faith that my fellow Americans could actually get beyond the political platitudes necessary to get elected in our country. Wes Clark is not a man who delivers platitudes with great conviction and for that reason he has no chance to be a successful politician

From now on people, when ever you want to refer to McCain, please make sure you use 'John W. Bush McCain.'

Ex: We cannot support John W. Bush McCain because he is advocating the failed policies of Dick Cheney.

Ex: John W. Bush McCain refuses to support a recent G.I. bill in congress, citing "it gives too much benefits to our veterans."

Ex: America cannot entrust a currently unstable U.S. economy to John W. Bush McCain who is on record saying, he does not understand the economy.

Please, spread the word about John W. Bush McCain.

America cannot afford John W. Bush McCain--not in treasure and definitely not in blood.

I really like Webb! I sent money to his campaign and I bought all his books,
At first, I was sure I wanted his as a VP candidate, but now I think He's more important in the Senate. If not,
What about Secretaru of Defense?

Webb would be wise to remain in the Senate and build a legislative legacy. Given Obama's outsized PERSONA, a cipher will do as VP; moreover, this is Obama's political, HIGH POINT in a campaign wherein the press continues to promote him. With the onset of the general election, the cakewalk will shortly be over....especially if McPain effects yet another of his "comebacks....."

Also, relative tranquility in Iraq mutes its chaos as an immediate concern despite its egregious, financial cost.

Lastly, if it appears that Obama is "soft" on enforcement of the IMMIGRATION laws, e.g., he suggests suspension of raids on offending employers, MANY Eastern voters will REVOLT......

Webb would help cover some of Obama's gaps (while not covering others) during the campaign but I'm not sure I'd want him in the Oval Office at whatever point Obama ceases to be President. (The V.P. is generally well positioned to become the next nominee, assuming Obama finishes his term(s)).

Edwards voted for the war but admitted his error and is strong on ending corporate abuse and undue privilege.

Richardson may have problems with women but would help with Hispanics.

A non-HRC women might anger her supporters (none loom as large as she does within the party) - but Wikipedia says this about Janet Napolitano:

Time magazine named her one of the five best governors in the U.S.[1] In February 2006, Napolitano was named by The White House Project as one of "8 in '08", a group of eight female politicians who could possibly run and/or be elected president in 2008.[2]

Her past and positions look good (and she supported BO), Her margin of victory increased from less than 1% to over 25% for her second term.

While HRC has been all over the political spectrum, Janet has a more consistent record and an impressive CV.:

"She is currently a member of the Democratic Governors Association Executive Committee. Furthermore, she has also served previously as Chair of the Western Governors Association, and the National Governors Association."

She is a serious candidate.

I really like Janet, but right now, AZ 's economy is in the tank and lots of folks are changing their minds about her. Although, anyone running this place would be in trouble.
I can tell you she's a workaholic, honest and very tough!
she travels all over the state to meet with regular people and listen to their concerns and acts on them
She has been scandal free.

The entire American economy and morale has suffered the results of the Bush Administration's wasting the nation's human resources and economic reserves on unproductive (to say the least) enterprises. Is AZ any worse off than the rest of the states at present? If so, why?

Thanks for your input. I lived 11 years in AZ and have some idea of what Janet's accomplished in that state's political culture. (Hillary worked for Goldwater, btw).

"The V.P. is generally well positioned to become the next nominee . . ."
Yeah? How many V.P.'s have run successfully for President in recent history, huh? George Bush, Sr. did it; Johnson won reelection after having assumed the presidency, Nixon lost but eventually made it two terms later; Truman won reelection after having assumed the job. For the most part, Veeps don't do too well running for the job after their bosses leave office. There is a general feeling that the Veep has the inside track, but history doesn't verify that rule.

Since it seems clear that McCain is going to choose Jindal for his running mate (announcement in Kenner, LA was no accident, that was Jindal's former district as Congressman) and he is the closest thing the repubs have to black, and he brings the intern'l stage in, as India is now a major trading partner with U.S., and would be thrilled to see him as VP, his conservative credentials are good, he is well liked as Gov of LA and he is seen as calm and an aisle crosser. This would be a very good choice for McCain he balances him in every way, age, race, temperment... Obama would do well to pick a strong foreign policy and military leader to achieve the same balance. Webb is new to Congress which serves as a negative but a Sam Nunn or Biden may be just the ticket. Hillary as Sec of State or Sec of Health would be two very good choices for Obama.
