Webb

Jim Webb, one of Congress' fastest rising Democrats and a Senator believed to occupy a spot on Barack Obama's vice presidential short list, is slated to throw his support behind the Illinois Democrat on Thursday, introducing Obama at a rally in Bristol, Virginia.

And while the event is designed to help Obama appeal to a portion of the country -- Appalachia and, more specifically, Virginia -- that could prove crucial in the general election, in an interview Wednesday with The Huffington Post, Webb showed off the political attributes he brings to the national campaign table.

On several key domestic and foreign policy issues, the Virginia Democrat offered persuasive defenses of Obama, in the process taking swipes at his presumed Republican counterpart.

"John McCain's comment about Barack not having sat down recently with General Petreaus means nothing," Webb said. "If you know who to listen to, if you know how to make judgments, if you know how evaluate information, you can do that. I don't think Franklin Roosevelt was ever at the front in France during WWII in order to help end the war."

On the other major foreign policy debate of the day -- whether or not a president should talk to hostile foreign leaders -- Webb again offered up a historical defense.

"Under the right circumstances, you have to [talk to your enemies]," he said. "My model for Iran is China in 1971. China was a nuclear power, it was a rogue state, it had American war on its border with Vietnam, it was spouting the same kind of hostile rhetoric. We took none of our military options off the table, we abandoned none of our alliances, but we reached out in a aggressive way diplomatically to bring China into the world community."

Webb has stayed religiously neutral throughout the Democratic primary, but is seen as a natural complement to an Obama presidency. Beyond reaching a set of voters with whom the presumptive Democratic nominee has had difficulties (working class whites), the Virginia Democrat brings with him military and foreign policy experience, and the ability to say he was against the Iraq war (as well as the first Persian Gulf War) before it was launched.

"You don't want to be an occupying power in that part of the world," he said. "It flames the tensions."

Story continues below

There are, of course, some red flags. The Senator has been a critic of the Democratic Party in the past, having previously served in the Reagan administration but never in an overtly political capacity. Moreover, his appeal to female voters is complicated by past remarks he made questioning the promotion of females at the U.S. Naval Academy and referring to the investigation into the Navy's "Tailhook" sexual harassment scandal as a "witch hunt" -- statements for which he has apologized.

But Webb has also shown that he can win a race with these albatrosses hanging around his neck. And when asked how he responded to the issues being re-raised in a vice-presidential context, and what kind of advice he could offer Obama for the inevitable character attacks, he brushed the topic away.

"Barack Obama has a year and a half now of constant exposure to this sort of mentality," he said. "Scott McLellan talked about the kind of campaign culture. It is a nasty world. The rest of it is just stuff. The Karl Rove mentality is to try and attack you at your greatest strength and then try to show that you are not like the people voting for you. Those are the two major things that they do. And they tried five or six different things in my campaign. And I just had to write it off."

Perhaps the most complicated argument for choosing (or not choosing) Webb as a VP is his bluntness. Several weeks ago, as he was promoting his new book "A Time To Fight" the Senator raised eyebrows over his diagnosis of Obama's problems in Appalachia. Instead of offering the usual political platitudes, he spoke candidly about how the issue was not one of entrenched racism, but rather a backlash to the belief that affirmative action programs had been expanded to every disadvantaged group except low-income whites.

"It is pretty obvious that there are a lot of people, a preponderance of people, who were comfortable with the notion of affirmative action for African Americans," Webb elaborated. "Then affirmative action kind of grew into a diversity program for basically all ethnic minorities. I think that's when you started seeing a reaction among people who were less advantaged among white voters..."

Here too, however, the Senator had a plan. "The Republicans know how to appeal to this cultural group, the Democrats don't even know they exist," he said, referencing an Wall Street Journal op-ed he penned in 2004. "But if you can get the rural whites in this country at the same table as African Americans, it would be good for American politics. I think Barack Obama has the potential to do this."

I WANT WEB AS VEEP!
WEB is the PERFECT match for Obama.
Centrist, vast military experience, he's not afraid of McCain, he KNOWS more than McCain, he can appeal to rural working class voters, he helped craft the GI Bill.
Absolute genius ticket.
He's funny too. I saw Webb joking about how he was one of the only politicians who had a union card, a purple heart, and three tattoos!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Webb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three wives? I need to read more. I have been transfixed in my efforts to determine if Webb wears a hairpiece. His hair looks... unusual. Yea, verily, there is a double-standard about men's hair for me; I simply don't like to see "hair enhancements" on men because it makes me suspicious. Baldness is awesome. Have you seen my own governor? The Great Wall of China was the inspiration for his hairline. I am so not kidding. ANYWAY. Sorry for the departure from substance. Carry on.

Coming from someone in a culture where families have more than three daddies, I can appreciate your enthusiasm. Webb is such a bad choice and this is the best Obama can come up with. Clue: no one wants to ride this trainwreck with him. No one in the Senate liked him before he ran. And they are just pandering him now for what they can get out of him. And the best he can come up with is Webb? What a loser.

He really is a hollow shell of a man, a politician and a candidate. Maybe one of his church members can help him out - why not two black candidates so the white latte drinkers can really expiate their faux guilt?

Perhaps Webb was scheduled to introduce Obama today, but it was in fact former Gov. Mark Warner, now running for Senate, who introduced him. I have to say, I was really impressed by Warner as a prospective VP. He and Barack seem to share the same vision for the country, and Warner was a powerful advocate today.

That said, don't we need Webb in the Senate? And is it true he has a record of misogyny? I am sure Obama's committee will vet all this, but if true, it should be a deal breaker, as far as I'm concerned (no matter what other positives he brings to the table).

Webb is good at what he does, but he would be a very poor choice for vp. I simply do not believe Obama would chose him. He's too inexperienced for anything but helping gather votes in his demographic. He needs to stay in the Senate and do his job as a supportive Democrat in Obama's administration.

That's my senator!

I love Jim Webb, but I'd rather he serve as senator because I'm already losing John Warner to retirement. I can't handle losing that much good leadership in one swoop.

Virginia is already going blue this year, so I'd like to see someone who'll bring in the Independents and some more Republicans. The V.P. is a dud of a job, so throw it to someone like Hagel who'll secure the election. Hell, even Ron Paul would bring enough support to secure it,... and I really like that guy!

Feeling the love for Richardson!

I think Obama needs a governor with foreign policy experience, and even some aspect of a "change" narrative. Richardson fits that bill very well.

Alternately, Kathleen Sebelius would be very good too, although she doesn't have the foreign policy credentials. But she does have roots in Ohio and Michigan.

Why is this an "exclusive"? Dude's been in the senate just as long as Obama. The fact he is given such worship is indicative of the white entitlement, or the NASCAR-white male anticipated entitlement still prevalent in the US. Can we bask in the glow of a different image without the majority busting it up with their trumped up grievances that really amounts to the latent insecurity they unknowingly impose on others?

It's about someone who could reach the "scotsirish" who voted for Hillary in WV and KY, etc...Webb just wrote a book about his scotsirish heritage, as the article mentions. He is white, but among other things, he fought to get an AA soldier represented as part of the VietNam monument..he's been a pit bull for vets' rights and benefits..sponsored the current GI bill, and takes no BS from anyone.

He's a brilliant man..written many books..first in his class at Quantico (unlike McBush, who was about last at Annapolis)..a VietNam Marine with a ton of medals. He doesn't have any more elected experience than Obama..less, actually..but he was Asst. Sec of Defense under Reagan, plus his Sec of Navy, as well. Plus he has years in as Congressional Counsel..a former (R) who has always been against this war..and his son who just got back from Iraq duty.

Unfortunately, as SecNav, he made some bad remarks regarding women's ability to serve, etc...which, as a woman about to enlist in the Navy, I found unforgiveable. Time passes, but I think he'd have to do work on that score. Also..the problem with putting a sitting (D) from the Senate as VP..anyone..is that we need all we can get there, or Obama will have no luck to get anything passed. We need a big majority..hopefully in November..but it's taking a chance to not cover the bases.

Okay, I am taking bets. (Well, if not bets, comments.) It's (probably) going to be Webb. The evidence is mounting. Webb’s appearances in the national media are increasing, and the ways that he can assist Obama are becoming clearer. Webb can help Obama win: a military guy, who is something of a populist, with blue collar appeal. He has been a dogged opponent of the Iraq War, and he shares with Obama the loneliness of the long distance writer. Obama strategist David Axelrod recently said that, “the primary characteristic Mr. Obama would look for in a vice president was someone with whom he was extremely comfortable” (New York Observer, May 13th).

But if not Webb, I have a surprise second choice.

Webb is right about affirmative action.

What we now have are programs giving upper middle class black kids a free pass. These are kids who have had everything. Meanwhile low income black kids aren't going to college and they certainly aren't benefiting from affirmative action.

We've refused to link affirmative action to what it's really designed to redress, to get low income kids into the middle class through college. What it's become is just another form of middle and upper class welfare.

You are both right and not as right. Low-income Black kids are going to college ( I sit on the board of an organization with that as its primary goal). The problem is that low-income white kids (especially males) are not going in the numbers that they should or could with some assistance. With Barack Obama reaching this level in American politics, Affirmative Action is clearly in need of an overall. I think that Affirmative Action re: college admissions needs to lose its racial and gender based premise, and, instead, use Affirmative Action for first generation college students regardless of race or gender. It should have been that way from the start.

What is so tragic in Democratic politics is that the Party disregarded low-income white Americans, regarding them as rednecks and white trash. There seemed to have been some silent attitude that if you are white and cannot advance in this society, then it is your fault. Rubbish! Tell it to the hard-working white people at Enron who saw their retirements lost to capitalistic corporate greed and self-serving manipulation.

Senator Obama could do this nation - and himself - great good by recognizing low-income white citizens as a forgotten class in this society that needs and deserves the same hand-up that Arican Americans and women have received in the last three decades.

You may be on to something. If AA were revamped to assist EVERYONE that was low-income get into better schools, colleges, and jobs it would help everyone who needed it...and it would still help blacks, women, hispanics and the such. Only poor whites who have very little options won't get left out...and in time, I think that would make a HUGE impact on racial relations in this country.

When black kids do go to college, they drop out and never accomplish anything. This happens all over. Asians don't drop out. Hispanics don't drop out. But blacks do - this is not a group that needs any more freebies and handouts. They reject the ones they already get, that other minorities eagerly grabbed and bootstrapped themselves into the middle class while blacks are still on welfare.

They need to get out of their self-defeating black culture of entitlement and victimhood and realize every other minority group has bootstrapped itself up in America and it is time they got off the dole and stop whining about wheedling more from an already overly generous society.

Tell black daddies to stick around and raise their kids and put efforts into their schools and home life and just maybe they can start handling their problems by themselves. They need a heck of a lot different message than they are getting from the black churches and Obama is not the one to give it to them. All he wants is more handouts.

It is for a lot of Americans, though. Remember what "values voters" did in the last two elections. For an important chunk of the voting populace, the Democratic party is a bunch of heathens, whores, and hooligans. Candidates who readily lend themselves to such twisted characterizations don't help. (And I'm not calling divorced people whores; I'm just saying that, considering the audience, it's hard for a politician in Webb's position to talk credibly about family values.)

Three wives will be a non-issue. McCain is on wife #2 I believe, possibly #3. Heck, right-wing deity Ronald Reagan married twice (remember Jane Wyman was wife #1). What are they going to say, that it's okay for the president to be a two-time divorcee, but not the veep? (Divorce would only be an issue for a Catholic candidate, in the same way abortion was an issue for Catholic John Kerry. Any number of conservative priests and bishops would be grandstanding on the issue of a divorced Catholic receiving communion.)
I think he would be a great running mate simply because he won't pull any punches.

I want to like Webb, but his comments as quoted in this article (as well as some of Obama's comments during the campaign) make me concerned that McCain is not the only one who doesn't see or understand the ways in which this is still a very sexist society. Sexual assault is still rampant in the military; 80 industrialized nations have more women in political leadership than the U.S. does; women still make about 3/4 of the income of men. We're just as educated (or more so), we're working just as hard (or more so), we're starting our own businesses--and we deserve representation in Washington. Truly progressive candidates would provide it, not scoff at our concerns or blame us for other people's unjust behavior--we have the Republicans to handle that.

I'm proud of Obama's success and I celebrate this huge step forward for Americans in general and African Americans in particular. But why not take women's issues along for the ride?

WOMEN NEED TO GET INFORMED ABOUT SEN. MC CAIN REFUSAL TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY NOW!

JOHN MCCAIN WHO REFUSED TO VOTE FOR A BILL THAT WOULD GIVE WOMENM EQUAL PAY FOR THE SAME JOB AS MEN.
THE CASE INVOLVED AFTER 20 YEARS ON JOB THIS WOMAN FOUND SHE MADE 40% LESS WHICH MEAN LESS SOCIAL SECURITY AND LESS PENSION THAT MEN WILL RECEIVE FOR THE SAME JOB

John refused to SUPPORT THE EQUAL PAY LAW, GIVING WOMEN EQUAL WAGES/SALARIES THE SAME AS MEN. HE WOULD NOT RETURN TO THE SENATE TO VOTE HOWEVER, SAID PUBLICLY THAT GIVING WOMEN EQUAL PAY WOULD CAUSE US TO FILE LAWSUITS, THUS PROTECTING EMPLOYERS AND YET AGAIN BIG BUSINESS.

ANY WOMAN WHO VOTES FOR SEN MC CAIN I REALLY FEEL FOR YOU BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE NOT KEPT UP WITH THE NEWS, MEDIA AND SEN. MC CAIN'S OWN PUBLIC STATEMENT IT'S OUTRAGEOUS.

I agree with you, but the problem that I see is that the *employers* enable the discrimination. If I did 1/3 of the things I see my male counterparts doing (and laughing about) I'd get canned. If you address the issue - you might get canned (or transferred). Not the male who is the problem but the female who won't put up with it. I had a co-worker call me today who ended up in tears due to the stalker like harassment from her male superior. Nothing will be done. It never is.

Your friend needs to contact EEOC (they're slow - but effective with facts in-hand). Establish a papertrail, augmented by witnesses if she can. If ineffective, on her way out of that job - tell her to put $100 or so on her person, take her taser to work - couple jolts to the genitals might not retain HER job, but would put a BIG crimp in harassment from then on {:- ) ps $100 is for bond - my lady.

You might want to simply vote for the candidate who will stop your sisters - and mine - from dying needlessly in Iraq.

The labor board in most states is the place to go.... legal authority, Subpoena powers,
binding decisions from a Judge or Commissioner.. any woman putting up with harrasment at work is an idiot.

With all the women in this country "who are a whole lot intelligent than Hillary, Obama and his team should be able to come up with many who are qualified to handle the position.

Where in the world did you get the false idea that Barack Obama is not interested in women's issues? And what comments by Obama are you referring to that concern you? I have never heard him say anything negative in regard to women's issues.

Following is a link to a youtube video of Sen. Obama's 24-minute talk with Planned Parenthood in January of this year. He discusses a number of women's issues in this address - and I'm sure he will have much more to say as time goes by. He has two daughters that he deeply loves, and he has the same concerns about their future. I hope you will watch the video. If you do, you will understand that Barack Obama "gets it" when it comes to women's issues. It really is worth taking the time to watch.
