Ed McMahon Explains Foreclosure: Spending, Divorce, Health Problems

06/ 6/08 06:42 PM ET   AP

Ed Larry King

LOS ANGELES — Ed McMahon blames the possible foreclosure of his multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills house on a set of problems all too familiar to many Americans: a foundering economy, health problems and poor planning.

"If you spend more money than you make, you know what happens," McMahon said Thursday night on CNN's "Larry King Live." "You know, a couple of divorces thrown in, a few things like that. And, you know, things happen."

McMahon, 85, appeared with his wife, Pamela. The couple said they are $644,000 behind on their mortgage payments and are in negotiations with lender Countrywide Home Loans Inc. to set a foreclosure date.

McMahon, in a neck brace, said he had stopped working since he broke his neck in a fall 18 months ago. He didn't elaborate.

McMahon, who was Johnny Carson's sidekick on the "Tonight" show, said the house had been on the market for two years and that although 50 organizations or individuals had looked at it, no one had made an offer. Documents show McMahon has a $4.8 million mortgage on the home.

"It's like a perfect storm," he said. "Economy problems. Selling the house right now is a tremendous operation."

McMahon bought the six-bedroom, five-bathroom, 7,000-square-foot house in January 1990. The mansion, which is listed at $6.25 million, is in a gated hilltop section off Mulholland Drive called The Summit. Britney Spears is among his neighbors.

Asked why a millionaire couldn't make house payments, Pamela McMahon said the couple had less money than people may think and suggested they could have done a better job managing their finances.

"We didn't keep our eye on the ball. We made mistakes," she said. "It's embarrassing to say the least, and it's sad, because you know, Ed's worked his whole entire life."

McMahon, a former pitchman for the American Family Publishers' sweepstakes and former "Star Search" host, received a $7.2 million settlement after a toxic mold spread through his house and led to the death of their dog in 2001.

With legal fees and construction costs of fixing the mold problem, the money did not go far, McMahon said.

"We had nine lawyers, they had nine lawyers," McMahon said. "By the time that's all over, and you rebuild the house from the outside in. ... A lot of things went wrong."

Still, McMahon said he was hopeful. He said there has been renewed interest in the house this week.

"I'm optimistic," he said.

I don't buy it for one second. First, what's her excuse? Get a job, lady. Move out, deed the property back to the bank if you can't afford it, rent a one-bedroom somewhere and live off of his social security, her earnings. Cry me a river.

I'll bet that $7.0 settlement went for something other than re-building and attorney's fees. Like vacations, for example. And the neck brace? Who wants to bet he's going back to court to get rid of some spousal support. And how can he be paying an ex-wife $50,000/month anyway? Why didn't he get that one cut out long ago if they're broke?

I think this is an unfortunate example of a young wife hustler using him, old man, to run a big public con. I'm not buying it.

So at last a real McMansion in foreclosure.

So he wanted to have a trophy wife to show-off to people and make people jealous. Well he got to do just that on Larry King and I am so jealous from head to toe.

So from now on celebrities in housing trouble will go to talk shows ? Hope they dont go to Jerry Springer show. They wont find too many potential mansion buyers there probably.

By the way, 86 year old man working every day, and much much younger wife doing what ? Curious. Serious redlight to future trophy-wife seekers.

On a serious note - to all - always ACKNOWLEDGE your brain, RESPECT your brain and ALWAYS ALWAYS - LISTEN to your brain. You would be wiser and happy.

That is really sad. Its bad enough to be in a tough financial situation as a young/middle age, but at 86?! That's just awful. With a broken neck too. Poor Ed. Never been a fan, but come on people. Have some empathy for the old guy.

I'm way below poverty level with health problems. I don't own anything but two early '80s vehicles and a rented home full of stuff, and I'm over 55 so what are my prospects? But geez, I can still feel sorry for old people.

So can I. I really feel bad for the old people like, those that lost everything during Katrina and now are being forced out of even the ridiculous FEMA trailers. Maybe we can start a fund drive to rescue poor old Ed, we can start in a FEMA trailer community. Forget that, the authorities will not allow anyone in, can't allow the public to see the deplorable conditions.
This country has really lost its way!!!

racom, there are so many people to feel sorry for. Its a bottomless pit. But I feel sorrier for old people because their time is closer to being up, generally speaking, and their chances of starting over aren't good. Ed always seemed like a nice man and has the reputation of being very generous. Now the dude's old, got a broken neck, and an expensive wife who probably only married him for his money. Seems sad to me, but that doesn't mean I don't feel for the others you mention and many others as well.

Sad to hear he's "Down and Out in Beverly Hills"...

However, $4.8 million mortgage left on a house purchased 18 years ago????

I would think that as with most home values that there has been some appreciation during the past 18 years and one would think there should be quite a bit of equity in the home by now...

Reportedly he also has a $300,000 HELOC and I would guess a cash-out refi (or two) along the way...and from what I have read his sale asking price ($6.25 million) is way above the current value of the property.

Sounds like some one needs to have a yard sale!

As Mr. McMahon may be 85 - the Mrs. looks young enough to still be earning an income...what's her contribution to their finances?

I'm wondering why he wont divulge how he broke his neck...in a fall? It must be something embarrassing, makes me wonder.

It is time for them to down size....Like most senior citizens. How stupid can you be to not save some money. Why are they living way beyond their means? Ed was lucky that for years he could ride on Johnny's coat tails. This is another story that just wasted time on CNN. BORING!!!!

a lot of people's equity for retirement is in their homes. The market crashes, coupled with some personal tragedies and some unwise decisions, it's a "perfect storm" for disaster. But yes, he has contributed much to tv and entertainment. That money would be chump change to many in Hollywood [how much did Brad Pitt just spend on a table and a lamp?]; time to pass the hat and help him out, IMO. Respect your elders.

His wife says, "...it's embarassing to say the least..."

Oh, please! If you are really embarassed by this, why did you go on Larry King to tell the world about your problem?

his young wife will divorce him anyhow. She only couldn't because he couldn't sell the house. As soon as the house is sold she will take her half and run. Who can blame her. He threw the women who really cared for him under the bus. It's his turn. Besides it might all just be a ploy to get free advertisement to sell the house.

7.2 million dollar settlement for mold? Are you kidding me?
No wonder my homeowners insurance is high with bogus claims like this.

He could have bought in Larchmont Village for half the cost of the hills.

I do not feel sorry for them.

When I watched this interview last night, it made me shake my head. A freaking multi-millionare sitting on television talking about losing his house and how tough things are, while his plastic-faced, imacculately-"made-up" wife sits there continually flipping her hair with her manicured nails, shedding crocodile tears over their plight. It was ridiculous and totally unfair to all of the starving, poverty-stricken people in this country/world who have noone to cry to. And to know that because of that show, they will now have money pouring in really pisses me off. I want Ed to be ok, but I want all the rest of the folks struggling in this country to be ok too. The ones who never lived in a $5.75 million home.
