"With clients like Focus on the Family, Franklin Graham, and Campus Crusade for Christ, Mark DeMoss may be the most prominent public relations executive in the evangelical world. A former chief of staff to Jerry Falwell, DeMoss became then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney's chief liaison to evangelical leaders."

In a new interview with Dan Gilgoff for BeliefNet's God-o-Meter, DeMoss explains the lack of religious enthusiasm for McCain and predicts a potential major shift to Obama.

How is John McCain doing among evangelicals, a crucial Republican constituency?

The evangelical world or the conservative religious world is not his natural habitat, so he doesn't strike me as being all that comfortable with it. I think that's evidenced by the strong comments made in 2000 about Falwell and Robertson. ...

You represent some of the nation's most powerful evangelicals. What do those leaders say about McCain?

This is one guy's perspective, but I am surprised by how little I've seen or read in conservative circles about McCain since February. I don't think I've gotten one email or letter or phone call from anybody in America in the last four months saying anything about this election or urging that we unite behind John McCain and put aside whatever differences we have. Back in the fall and winter, you'd get several things a day from conservatives saying, "The future of the Supreme Court is at stake. We have to stop Hillary Clinton. Get behind so and so--or don't' go with this guy." It's just very quiet. It could meant there's a real sense of apathy or it could mean they're' waiting for the general election to begin. But it's a surprise, given the way email networks work now.

Barack Obama is trying hard to win evangelical voters. Does that effort stand a chance?

If one third of white evangelicals voted for Bill Clinton the second time, at the height of Monica Lewinsky mess--that's a statistic I didn't believe at first but I double and triple checked it--I would not be surprised if that many or more voted for Barack Obama in this election. You're seeing some movement among evangelicals as the term [evangelical] has become more pejorative. There's a reaction among some evangelicals to swing out to the left in an effort to prove that evangelicals are really not that right wing. There's some concern that maybe Republicans haven't done that well. And there's this fascination with Barack Obama. So I will not be surprised if he gets one third of the evangelical vote. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 40-percent.

Could it possibly be that they are making up their own minds instead of being led like SHEEP? I welcome them into reality. The reality is that these last 8 years of Bush politics have been the most criminal in history. I think they will go beyond the Nixon scandal personally.
People need to think outside the box and if they are doing that instead of being preached to then they will vote democratic.
Voting for McCain means more misery for everyone. More war, more higher gas prices, more higher food prices, neglect of global warming, neglect of science, billions of dollars spent on a foreign policy that has made America less safe. We need to improve the lives of Americans now. We simply can not afford to vote for a Republican.
Definition of a republican: It is all about ME! ONLY ME!

It's time real Christians rejected anti-Christian neocon ideology of warmongering and capitalism, to repeat an earlier writer. AMEN!

In my opinion and experience, evangelical are like every other people, not bad by birth , but they have lead to believe what they believe by their preachers. Not just belief but even their activism is due to preaching done. This is also because they have been not receiving alternate opinion in their states which could serve as a detox. That is why I support the 50 state strategy where democrats need to vociferously talk to people in these states and they wont be disappointed to find that there are lot of evangelicals willing to align with them. This 50 state strategy is not something you do it only during election time, this should be something you do whenever you can to build relationship with evangelicals currently supporting gopers. that is one reason why I supported Gov, dean saying dems should attend fox news debate. what dems need is alternate thinking to totally obsolete the neocons. Logic of campaigning hard in toss up states is no good in longterm. Dems hold a disadvantage by letting gopers use southern white male strategy. they can no longer do that. i would also request democratic blogs from too much bashing of evangelicals. it is time to take them into your fold. I m not a democrat, I am just an observer.

The true suffering will be if McCain wins. Nearly everything troubling thing we now face as a nation can be directly attributed to the Bush administration and the Republicans in Congress.

Obama is far from a left-wing radical. You should read and research before spewing the same lines as the right wing talk show hosts. They are scared, but not about Obama. They are scared about a democratic president actually doing some good. It stands to rob them of their goldmine - the ignorant masses listening to age old rhetoric. Funny thing about the hate and fear they use to garner ratings - if things are going well and the nation as a whole feels good about our path then the hate and fear loses its power.

Oh, and you're very welcome for the lost opportunity to continue this god awful war, the rape of the US Constitution, and assault on our economy. You may suffer; that choice is yours. I will happily move forward and rejoice as this nation grows truly strong again.

I agree. The 25% who support Bush will vote for McCain. Obama won't get those votes.

Over the past 25 years we have seen a brand of evangelical politics linked to the Republican party's efforts to deprive women of their reproductive freedoms, gays and lesbians of basic human dignity, and a mean spirited every man for themselves mentality toward the economy. However, this need not be the case. If one looks back in American history only a few years more, one will see evangelical Christianity at its best in the African Americans (and many of their white supporters) who believed that they too were made in the image of God and drew strength from the belief that though the entire might of white racism was aligned against them, a God of justice would walk with them to the promised land of a more just America. It is therefore important to acknowledge that one need not cling to religion in bitterness and dispair but that religious belief can be an important force in the struggle for justice.

It must be tough to be part of the last 20% of Republicans and confusing. I had the follwing conversation with one of them last night as follows:

"I didn't watch his speach. Obama is a muslim."
Ok, then how can so many Christians go for Obama who is a "known muslim"? and...if he is muslim, how did he spend 20 years in a Christian church? Oh..
."..It was a "cover" because he wanted to get into politics..".
You are saying he is a foreign plant by a middle eastern government?
"No, he is just using Christianity as a cover but he came up with this on his own.."
...But, God speaks directly to his chosen few so why hasn't he told Christians the truth?
"Oh....because the Devil has deceived these misguded Christians.." ..
Oh, then, God isn't in charge or more powerful or cares about his people....?
"You are going to hell".
Good, maybe I can have a logical conversation there!

Yes, and fossils and carbon dating evidence of the age of the earth is planted to deceive us all... There is no reasonable discourse with this kind of paranoid and illogical mindset, which is ready to dismiss any and all evidence out of hand.

The religious movement has been slowly fragmenting for quite some time. Yes, you still have the Hagge's of this world, but there are counter voices like Joel Osteen out there with a growing influence. McCain can have Hagge.

If you read newspapers of late, you have seen the Baptists, among others, decrying the drop in their church memberships. Frankly, with all that's happening in the world, we no longer need to be constantly vilified for wrong-doing. The Hagees of the world have only themselves to blame for the decline in the numbers of their church attendees. That Joel Osteen grabs a spot on "60 Minutes" is testament to the fact that ministries who ask us to help one another and live the Gospel have the highest increase in attendees. Preaching perdition as a constant makes particularly the young and so many others turn completely off religion. It's no wonder Obama is looked upon with the word "hope" springing from so many lips!

No right thinking person who has the best interests of our country at heart could not bring themselves to vote for McCain. The GOP neocon agenda has been an unmitigated disaster for this nation. I can't bring myself to believe that women, Christian evangelicals, independents, and moderate Republicans will want to see this country continue the downhill slide under Bush/McCain policies. We have a unique opportunity to change the direction of this country with the election of Obama. He's going to be the next president of the United States.

Even though Reverend Wright is a albatross around Obama's neck, this is a problem in Obama's (former) CHURCH - which implies that Obama must not be a Muslim. Evangelicals will eventually forgive him for having a controversial pastor. They would never forgive him for being a Muslim. Evangelicals will also notice that Obama is comfortable talking about his faith, while McCain does not.

How funny it is that the "experts" are so totally stupid - the Evangelicals are not a monolithic block just like any other group isn't monolithic. There are plenty of AA Evangelicals, intellectually honest Evangelicals, progressive Evangelicals, "sick of Bu$h's BS" Evangelicals, Democratic Evangelicals, etc. Why is it so surprising that Evangelicals would support Obama who is Christian?

There are millions of folk who call themselves devout Christians,

evangelists, born again, etc., who some may want to call deluded,

'opiated' or 'pixieated', however many are very aware that the GOP

has treated them with hypocrisy. They won't be fooled again!!!!!!!!!!

The evangelical Christians fell for the lie Bush committed when he told them that he was a born again christian...twice. How can a born again christian be a war monger instead of a peace maker? How can a born again christian be a lair instead of being transparent in everything he or she does? How can a born again christian send young men and women to their deaths because he wants to leave a legacy of greatness by forcing democracy down peoples throats instead of by example? I hope these evangelicals have learned their lesson and stay out of politics and try to amend by doing God's work. Like caring for the poor, not discriminating against anyone including homosexuals, taking care of God's earth and stop corporations from polluting, being for peace instead of war for one in their lives.
