Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her pioneering campaign for the presidency on Saturday and summoned supporters to use "our energy, our passion, our strength" to put Barack Obama in the White House.

"I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," said the former first lady, delivering the strong affirmation that her one-time rival and other Democratic leaders hoped to hear after a bruising campaign.

Amid tears from her supporters, Clinton issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama, the first black to secure a presidential nomination, represent.

"Children today will grow up taking for granted that an African-American or a woman can, yes, become the president of the United States," she said.

Watch:

For Clinton and her backers, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination.

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it has about 18 million cracks in it and the light is shining through like never before," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to occupy, as president this time.

Indeed, her speech repeatedly returned to the new threshold her candidacy had set for women. In primary after primary, her support among women was a solid bloc of her coalition. She noted that she had received the support of women born before women could even vote.

But her main goal was to heal the rift in the party -- one that cleaved Democrats in part by class, by gender and by race.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said in her 28-minute address. Loud boos competed with applause.

With that and 13 other mentions of his name, Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois, who awaits Arizona Sen. John McCain in the general election. "We may have started on separate journeys but today, our paths have merged," Clinton said.

Obama, in a statement from Chicago where he was spending the weekend, declared himself "thrilled and honored" to have Clinton's support.

"I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run," he said. "She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans."

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. Aides said Obama watched Clinton's speech live on the Internet. His campaign put a photo of the New York senator on its Web site and urged supporters to send her a message of thanks. Likewise, Clinton's Web site thanked her backers. "Support Senator Obama today," her Web page said. "Sign up now and together we can write the next chapter in America's story."

Party leaders welcomed the new alliance.

"As you may know, I was a boxer. And I've seen many fights go the distance," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada. "But never have I seen one where everyone came out stronger -- until now. Because of the unprecedented number of new voters and the tremendous amount of enthusiastic supporters all the Democrats brought to the primary process, we stand ready to win the White House in 2008."

Both Obama and Clinton stood to gain from the new collaboration.

Obama could use the women and blue-collar voters who flocked to Clinton's campaign. She could benefit from his prodigious fundraising to help retire a debt of as much as $30 million. Clinton loaned her campaign at least $11.4 million; by law only, she has until the summer Democratic convention to recoup it.

Clinton also has told colleagues she would be interested in joining Obama as his running mate. On Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an Obama supporter, said she had made "a powerful case for her eligibility" to be on the ticket.

Joining Clinton on stage Saturday were her husband, the former president, and their daughter, Chelsea, to loud cheers from the crowd. When she spoke, they stepped away. Her mother, Dorothy Rodham, watched from the floor to the side of the stage and wiped away a tear.

In deciding to suspend her campaign, Clinton kept some options open. She gets to retain her delegates to the nominating convention this summer and she can continue to raise money. It also means she could reopen her campaign if circumstances change before the Denver convention, but gave no indication that was her intention.

As soon as Clinton finished speaking, some of the nearly 300 Democratic party leaders and elected officials across the country who had pledged their support to her as superdelegates released statements announcing they now back Obama. The switchers included some of Clinton's most high-profile supporters, including Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Maine Gov. John Baldacci.

Clinton supporters began lining up at dawn to attend the farewell address. A smattering of Obama backers showed up as well, saying they did so as a gesture of party unity.

As they awaited her arrival, campaign staffers milled the room, exchanging hugs and saying goodbye.

Clinton seemed almost buoyant in her address, feeding off the energy of a loud and appreciative crowd.

"Well, this isn't exactly the party I planned but I sure like the company," she said as she opened her speech.

Clinton backers described themselves as sad and resigned. "This is a somber day," said Jon Cardinal, one of the first in line. Cardinal said he planned, reluctantly, to support Obama in the general election. "It's going to be tough after being against Obama for so long," he said.

Republicans quickly launched a "Clinton vs. Obama" page on the Republican National Committee's Web site drawing attention to her criticism of Obama during the campaign.

President Bush praised the symbolism of the 2008 field.

"I thought it was a really good statement, powerful moment when a major political party nominates an African-American man to be their standard bearer," he said in an interview Friday with an Italian journalist. "And it's good for our democracy that that happened. And we also had a major contender being a woman. Obviously Hillary Clinton was a major contender. So I think it's a good sign for American democracy."

Am I alone here? Doesn't anyone else see that Nancy Pelosi is standing in the way of richeous justice here. She is guilty of criminal compliance. Because of her in her position of power where she has so misused and abused her office I sincerely doubt that a woman could handle a job as powerful as president. I've never been a sexist person but after what I've seen of women in politics lately I seriously doubt that they are built for the job and I am relieved that Hillary didn't get the nomination on many levels.

I would go so far as to try Nancy along with the Bush administration and at least make her try and make sense of her actions to the American public.

San Francisco, please don't re-elect this woman to office. Look into her local dealings with her husband where she is sending pork projects home to his business. She is not an honest person.

I agree. Get P@losi the hell out of there. She's an embarrassment, just like B@sh is an embarrassment. This is not sexism here. If a man acted the same as her, I'd feel the same way.

After what has happened lately, I do think that we should think twice before putting women in positions of power here. Now, that's sexist., and I don't make any apologies for it. Maybe iI'm looking at a hormonal thing...FLAME ON.

Well the real stripes are coming out, aren't they? You fools in the democratic party who go along with the Hillary bashing because you're "new" democrats and you think it's cool, are just feeding into a very dangerous mentality. Women don't belong in Power. There......it's been said out in the open, and I'm glad for it. I'm glad there isn't any ambiguousness in it. Now you all can hug these guys for their honesty and sing kumbaya. Welcome to the brave new world of the New Democratic Party. Turn in your blue shirt for a brown one and wear your boots proudly.

I thought her speech was more interesting for what she didn't say than what she did say.

She did not go after John McCain. She did not balance out her discussion of sexism with a discussion of racism. She made it all about being a role model for women and their dreams rather than serving the country as a human being.

She left all her options open and she made it sound like Obama couldn't live without her helping him.

She said all the right words of support in one sense, but I sense her building up her own power base within the party and that's what all that talk about HER 18 million voters is about.

She's not gone and I will keep a watchful eye on her. I would love to think she was sincere, but until I see some serious action where she supports Obama instead of steals the stage and drama from him and tries to manipulate him to her will, I will remain skeptical.

Saturday's spectacle was more clintonian drama. And I'm surprised the party let her get away with it. I hope there will be no more pandering to Mrs. Clinton. She lost fair and square.

I hope Obama has the sense to realize being overly gracious in the name of party unity might be the back door from which she stages her coup attempt. I really didn't hear a sincere concession that Obama deserved his victory and his day in the sun.

Bo will be taking centre stage now and everyone should focus on shining the light on him from now on.

Hillary needs to retract some negative statements, release her delegates, discourage all those sites promoting her for president and help put him in the limelight. Bo should remain the centre of everyone's attention from now until November.

I totaly agree with this. I hope this will happen.

I am waiting to see some of the actions you mentioned by Hillary. If she does these things, then I might believe her speech.

But, yes, it's all about Obama now and the way forward and we need to celebrate his historic achievement and move into the future boldly. If HRC and BC make any statements they should be mirrors reflecting Obama's glory, not their own!

Hill is not going to release those delegates. She is still hoping that something is going to go wrong with OB, and capitalize on it and steal some delegates away from him. Everyone should be aware that the Superdelegates can change their minds all the way to the convention. Hill has made that clear. This woman is so obvious. Watch... she is going to show herself again. I'm thinking it's going to be at the convention. This thing is not over.

Remember, I told you so. Really, you're not going to remember it, but I did tell you so.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

The objective is to elect Barack Obama president. Obviously, feelings are hurt on both sides but it's not about us. If his message is to end the fighting and find common ground, why are we trying to batter each other? Are we listening to what he says? There are so many posts which are completely antithetical to the message of his campaign which is unity.

Obama 08.

Yeah Hillary! Thank you thank you thank you. You have been a beacon of strength and a fighter for all. I am proud of your campaign and say the hell with all the hatemongerers that used the energy of hate to bring you down. They will only turn their useless hate toward McCain and then anywhere else they can find a target for the rest of their lives. Haters always miss out in some way in the end.

You faced sexism, (although it WAS NOT why you ulitmately lost) and you rarely called people on it. (save the bs comments refuting this) Well done. You and Bill have been wonderful fighters for the people and I praise you both. The 90s were the best years in modern history. Thank you Bill.

She doesn't need to retract a damn thing, the delegates don't need to be released by her as they vote as they please, nor does she need to discourage any websites that support her. Hillary doesn't need to shine Obama's shoes and build him a shrine and praise the God you have made him out to be. Grow up. People will still write her name in as people do in every presidential campaign to have their voices heard.

Part 2
A few things HRC did before her years in the Whitehouse and senate.

--Hillary was twice named as US top 100 Attorneys
--Hillary was named as one of 300 Women Who Changed the Word
--As a law student, Hillary represented foster children and parents in family court and worked on some of the earliest studies creating legal standards for identifying and protecting abused children.
--Following graduation, she became a staff attorney for the Children's Defense Fund.
--Hillary ran a legal aid clinic for the poor when she first got to Arkansas and handled cases of foster care and child abuse.
--She organized a group called Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families.
When she was just 30, President Carter appointed her to the board of the United States Legal Services Corporation, a federal nonprofit program that funds legal assistance for the poor.
--She ran a task force to improve education in Arkansas through higher standards for schools and serving on the board of the Arkansas Children's Hospital, helping them expand and improve their services. She also served on national boards for the Children's Defense Fund, the Child Care Action Campaign, and the Children's Television Workshop.
--She also continued her legal career as a partner in a law firm. She led the American Bar Association's Commission on Women in the Profession, which played a pioneering role in raising awareness of issues like sexual harassment and equal pay

You used to be radically opposed to bo. Nice to see you type b 08. Could you now please write a two-page glowing post on bo too? We are aware of her accomplishments, but since bo is the one running for President, I think we should be striving to praise his accomplishments, his agenda and further his nomination.

Thank you for your endorsement at the end.

300 Women who Changed the World -

http://www.britannica.com/women

excerpts from the above site -

Hillary Clinton - showed that the ceremonial parts of the first lady's job could be merged with a strong role in public policy and that the clout of the first lady could be converted into a personal political power base. Her role in the health care debate galvanized conservatives and helped Republicans recapture Congress in the 1994 elections.

vs.

Eleanor Roosevelt - American first lady (1933–45) - a United Nations diplomat and humanitarian.

She instituted regular White House press conferences for women correspondents, and wire services that had not formerly employed women were forced to do so in order to have a representative present in case important news broke.

Her defense of the rights of African Americans, youth, and the poor helped to bring groups into government that formerly had been alienated from the political process.

She was appointed a delegate to the United Nations (UN), where she served as chairman of the Commission on Human Rights (1946–51) and played a major role in the drafting and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).

In 1961 President Kennedy appointed her chair of his Commission on the Status of Women, and she continued with that work until shortly before her death.

In summary -

Hillary Clinton used the position of First Lady to gain a "personal political power base".

Eleanor Roosevelt used the position of First Lady to serve and improve the lives of others.

I feel the need to say this again; Hillary and Obama are virtually the same on every issue,so if you would Vote for 1 you definately would vote for the other IF you were voting on the issues. The only 2 reasons I could think of that would stop you for Voting for Obama if you would vote for Hillary are Not voting for him because he is not a woman, which is Sexist or not Voting for him because he is not White, which is Racist. I hate to come to that conclusion, but what else can it be, After all, They are virtually the same candidate, where the issues are concerned.

I cannot wait for the election - I wish it was tomorrow. Every single person I know that support Hillary Clinton would never support BO. With McCain we know what we get - I would not trust BO for anything. Tick tock tick tock - the repubs have tons of dirt on him and it will start flying.
Although I think his supporters who basically think he is the second coming of Christ will continue to follow on.

Hillary ran a kinder, gentler Republican smash-face campaign and bloodied Obama. She managed to build a movement, alright. A movement which is a cult of personality for her, not the issues.

Now the only lingering question that remains is: Is she trying to rally the party behind him or behind her?

The stage was a little to grand and palatial for my liking, and not the type of frame that I would put on a concession and valedictory speed.

Release your delegates h, don't try to upstage bo, don't hang your bargaining chip over his head to pressure him so you can be veep, and tell your supporters to shut down those sites destined to make you President.

The gist of her Saturday speech was not about her supporting O. and being a team player. The effusive media might want to review her speech, especially the part where she asserts, "I want to build ...."

In Saturday's speech, she carefully, clearly, laid out her intentions to continue fostering her goals. She intends to use O's campaign as a vehicle to expand a movement based on her ideas, her platform a subset of the Democratic Party's.

My own reaction was that she was paraphasing and reversing JFK's great quote -- her modern version of it seemed to be, "Ask not what you can do for your party, your country, but what your party and country can do for you." Even were this meant with the best of intentions on her part, this sets the stage for intra-party future conflict.

So the risk of trusting her is still great. It's not impossible that she could learn to be a good sport -- but probable?

Her supporters have been flocking to sites set up in her name. The ostentatious nature of that speech convinced them that she made a victory speech, and indeed everything about that speech shows that while on the one hand she was obliged to show support for bo, on the other she was rubbing his nose in her self-proclaimed victory.

Trust her? After she releases her delegates and a VP has been chosen, then I will be able to trust her, but only because the threat is removed and she will be rendered powerless to steal his nomination, his limelight and his presidency.

After Hillary's speech I realized just how battle weary I am. So much so that I was grateful to hear Hillary's positive words about Barack----even if they were/could be just an empty charade!

Those of us who have taken the time to know Obama, read his books, do our research, know without question that he's not an empty suit, is the complete opposite of the Rev. Wright's fierce rhetoric, isn't a Muslim, and all the rest. So it has been painful, each false attack against Obama wounding his supporters as well. Now that Hillary is rallying round, I certainly hope she will finally speak the truth about him.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:41 AM on 06/09/2008

1. Hillary never said that Obama was a muslim. His name - Barack Hussein Obama -
sounds very much like the two islamic leaders (sadam hussein/osama bin ladin ) our country has been dealing with for the past 20 years. Wondering if he's muslim is as natural as wondering if... maria conchita alonso is spanish.

2. It is extremely foolish and naive of you to think that you "know" Obama because you read his books and did research. Barack says he was best friends with Tony Rezco for decades, yet he didn't know anything about his "dark and dirty side"... certainly that is true for you and me as well. We can never know someone fully... how many kids grow up to be murderers... yet their parents and siblings are stunned.

3. With the point in #2 in mind, it is certainly worth questioning and scrutinizing why Obama attended such a radical church and sought guidance from Rev Wright for more than 20 years... if he didn't agree with the general philosophy. To NOT question it, is like the media NOT questioning/investigating Bush's argument for going to war with Iraq.

4. Hillary has never spoken anything but the truth about Obama. Stating that Obama lacks experience is not a lie. By his own admission, he's not qualified for the job. You cannot dispute the fact that he hadn't even served 1 term as a US senator -- which historically makes him the
least experience person to ever be nominated.

No, she never SAID he was Muslim, she only set loose her minions to disperse over the Internet, an photo of him dressed in native African garb (Senate trip) to IMPLY!!! She loves to lie "implicitly." Her comment on 60 Minutes, "As far as I know..." Well, she DID know, unequivocally, that is NOT a Muslim but she let that little gem hang out there to cast doubt on him. Disgusting.

In NH, fearing a loss, she initiated an email smear campaign against him, spearheaded by elected female officials of NH, claiming he was not pro choice, had a weak voting record re: women's rights. Those women were in the end, compelled to issue a formal apology, stating pathetically, that they were given the talking points UNAWARE they were false!

BEST friends with Rezko? For DECADES? He wasn't even in politics DECADES ago, he was in LAW SCHOOL, graduating in 1991, after that, worked as a Civil Rights attorney, teaching law at U of C. He didn't get into politics until 1997!!! More lies.

So, you know the Clintons, the most scandal ridden admin. in HISTORY? Let's talk Peter Paul v Clinton, Hsu, Clinton Library donors then. Experience? Hillary couldn't even pass the DC bar! Before carpetbagging her way into NY, winning her Senate seat thanks to having been Bill Clinton's wife, she had been elected to ANY office, Councilwoman, mayor, dogcatcher!

B is more of a "Christian" than H could ever hope to be.

What an unfair portrait you paint, based on inuendo, false hypothesis, and outright lies.

1. Judging a person by his name is just plain stupidity. The King of Jordan was King H_ss#in; he wasn't a terrorist. Hundreds of thousands of good people have that name, just as J@ck the Ripper and J@ck K?nn?dy share the same name. Also, can you judge a person because their name rhymes with a terrorist's name? You're laughable.

2. Do you know how many shady characters the Cl|nton's are associated with? Should I remind you of Whitew@ter and their past and present scandals and the never-ending list of associates who ended up dead?

3. She sought guidance from this same pastor after her husband cheated on her and she is involved with a secret cult, a right-wing religious fellowship that is kept well hidden from the press and the public. O joined that church specifically to get better connected with the community, since he was trying to help his community and he became a Christian there, so you first point is bunk. You don't abandon a church where you have made friends and ties with your community, just because you sometimes disagree with the pastor.

3. While H was First Lady, O was a community organizer, and state Senator issuing legislation at a state level. What experience did she gain as First Lady except dodging bullets in Bosnia and shaking hands? Did she negotiate treaties? Did she negotiate trade deals?

It's so funny, they say he is a muslim but they rake him over the coals about things said in his VERY christian church. Make up your Minds. Oh I forgot, your mind was made up the 1st time you saw his face.

She said: " No he's not a Muslim.... as far as I know"!!! Did she REALLY need to dangle the seed of doubt with that irrelevant "As far as I know"? Everything we believe is true, is true only to the extent of "what we know"

Your argument about a Hispanic name having an association with being Latino is not valid in this case and it shows your gigantic ignorance... Islam is a religion and there are many, many followers of this religion who come from various ethnic or national origins, Pakistanis, Africans, Persians, Turks, Bosnians, Orientals and of course Arabs... but not exclusively Arabs... which I believe was your point with the Husein smear! You can infer that Maria Conchita Alonzo is of a Hispanic origin but you could not say that she is Catholic or that she is Mexiacan, or Puerto Rican or anything at all about her nationality or her religious beliefs or lack thereof! The point is that Barack Husein Obama is an american(USA), born in Kansas... he is not a Muslim and never was(not that there is anything wrong with that), and HRC and her people know that... because if they had even the slightest proof otherwise, they would have put it out there to damage him... like they did try with the photos in traditional garb during his visit to Kenya!

You need a course in logic, before you start enumerating your opinions as facts!

Of course time will tell if Hillary matches the words of her speech with sincere action. But even if it was only lip service, what suprised me the most, as an Obama supporter, is how good it felt to hear her actually say something NICE about Barack. After constantly hurling the crappiest things at him, lo these many long months, it was such a refreshing contrast.

I would love to hear some of the crappiest things that she said about him? Just 3 examples would be great.

Stating Mac would make a better commander-in-chief.
bo is friendly with terrorist Ayers (who was pardoned for his crime by her husband, and who committed his crime when bo was 8 years old)
bo might not be a christian (leaving doubt about his faith after her minions circulated hateful email calling him a muslim, a terrorist, a m@rxist, unpatriotic etc.)
stating that she has the "white" vote in two states where racism abounds is called "race-baiting"

Name 3 crappy things he said about her?

(Once again, direct links to him, as you asked for her.)

Seems to me Tuesday's speech was the real Hillary, Saturday's speech the choreographed Hillary. Had she delivered Saturday's sentiments Tuesday night I might've been more convinced of her sincerity. As it was, this latest speech seemed like a do-over---all the things she should've said when the Primaries closed.

Stop trying to censor and alienate your own. We are bo's eyes and ears, and we continue to mistrust this woman for very good reasons.

We need to be nice to each other. It's always sad when you don't get what you want. I would be beyond sad. But. I do know that Hillary and Obama want the same thing. As a party, we are super lucky!!

A nomination campaign is based on much more than just popular votes and delegates. It's based also on who raised the most capital, who had the better grassroots organization, who managed funds better, who chose the best staff and who had a consistent and overpowering message that put him over the top. Also, who came from way behind without name recognition and a popular President campaigning for him to end up taking the lead? bo, that's who.

When you put all that on the scale together with the majority of delegates he has, the scale tips way in his favor, and he is the clear winner of this race.

Hillary Clinton needs to back up her words with actions: She needs to publicly retract her statements that John McCain would be a better Commander-in-chief.

Agreed. She will do that as soon as Obama backs up his words with actions. I think after 20 years of attending Trinity Church, it's time that he try to bring a little peace and unity there. He needs to tell the pastors and congregation that sitting in those pews listening to hateful sermons that divide blacks from whites... is NOT healthy and not what he believes in.

Marco34la: I have read your previous post, you have mentioned twice about Obama not leaving his church. Now you answer me!!! WHY DID'NT HRC LEAVE HER CHURCH WHEN HER PASTOR WAS CHARGED WITH RAPE OF A [7] YEAR OLD GIRL.? now answer and I don't want to hear any BS.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:55 AM on 06/09/2008

You are a nut, That man has no power over that Congregation and to be honest, Just because YOU disagree with "contraversal" things said there does not mean everyone does. Also I thought you said he was a Muslim. Trinity is no Mosque. Your arguments are all over the Map, Get a grip.

Its funny...you also said you were gonna vote for McCain! Now if youre looking at pastors.....

Maybe if Obama's name was O'mally and his pastor said that Muslims and gays are evil it would be ok!! I mean isnt that the same principle under a different color?

The fact that all you can do is regurgitate Rev. Wright lets me know that you HAVE NOTHING ELSE! Then again the more I look at your statements the more CHAOTIC they are!! I bet youre typing this crap while listening to Limbaugh's medicated rants arent ya! Dont even dignify Marco with an answer anymore! His republican talking points should let us all know whats happening!!

No she doesn't because she never said that. You and many others are unable to think strategically to understand what she was saying.

She was saying McCain is going to run on experience and she thought her experience could stand up better against him. Please start thinking critically and let go of the the hate. I suspect all the people that hate her for comments like this harbor a lot of resentment in their own lives and spend most of it hating others too. LET IT GO. It's wonderful place when you look at things for what they are and not what you'd like them to be. It's easier to hate then understand.

Obama 08.
