WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her pioneering campaign for the presidency on Saturday and summoned supporters to use "our energy, our passion, our strength" to put Barack Obama in the White House.

"I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," said the former first lady, delivering the strong affirmation that her one-time rival and other Democratic leaders hoped to hear after a bruising campaign.

Amid tears from her supporters, Clinton issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama, the first black to secure a presidential nomination, represent.

"Children today will grow up taking for granted that an African-American or a woman can, yes, become the president of the United States," she said.

Watch:

For Clinton and her backers, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination.

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it has about 18 million cracks in it and the light is shining through like never before," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to occupy, as president this time.

Indeed, her speech repeatedly returned to the new threshold her candidacy had set for women. In primary after primary, her support among women was a solid bloc of her coalition. She noted that she had received the support of women born before women could even vote.

But her main goal was to heal the rift in the party -- one that cleaved Democrats in part by class, by gender and by race.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said in her 28-minute address. Loud boos competed with applause.

With that and 13 other mentions of his name, Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois, who awaits Arizona Sen. John McCain in the general election. "We may have started on separate journeys but today, our paths have merged," Clinton said.

Obama, in a statement from Chicago where he was spending the weekend, declared himself "thrilled and honored" to have Clinton's support.

"I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run," he said. "She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans."

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. Aides said Obama watched Clinton's speech live on the Internet. His campaign put a photo of the New York senator on its Web site and urged supporters to send her a message of thanks. Likewise, Clinton's Web site thanked her backers. "Support Senator Obama today," her Web page said. "Sign up now and together we can write the next chapter in America's story."

Party leaders welcomed the new alliance.

"As you may know, I was a boxer. And I've seen many fights go the distance," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada. "But never have I seen one where everyone came out stronger -- until now. Because of the unprecedented number of new voters and the tremendous amount of enthusiastic supporters all the Democrats brought to the primary process, we stand ready to win the White House in 2008."

Both Obama and Clinton stood to gain from the new collaboration.

Obama could use the women and blue-collar voters who flocked to Clinton's campaign. She could benefit from his prodigious fundraising to help retire a debt of as much as $30 million. Clinton loaned her campaign at least $11.4 million; by law only, she has until the summer Democratic convention to recoup it.

Clinton also has told colleagues she would be interested in joining Obama as his running mate. On Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an Obama supporter, said she had made "a powerful case for her eligibility" to be on the ticket.

Joining Clinton on stage Saturday were her husband, the former president, and their daughter, Chelsea, to loud cheers from the crowd. When she spoke, they stepped away. Her mother, Dorothy Rodham, watched from the floor to the side of the stage and wiped away a tear.

In deciding to suspend her campaign, Clinton kept some options open. She gets to retain her delegates to the nominating convention this summer and she can continue to raise money. It also means she could reopen her campaign if circumstances change before the Denver convention, but gave no indication that was her intention.

As soon as Clinton finished speaking, some of the nearly 300 Democratic party leaders and elected officials across the country who had pledged their support to her as superdelegates released statements announcing they now back Obama. The switchers included some of Clinton's most high-profile supporters, including Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Maine Gov. John Baldacci.

Clinton supporters began lining up at dawn to attend the farewell address. A smattering of Obama backers showed up as well, saying they did so as a gesture of party unity.

As they awaited her arrival, campaign staffers milled the room, exchanging hugs and saying goodbye.

Clinton seemed almost buoyant in her address, feeding off the energy of a loud and appreciative crowd.

"Well, this isn't exactly the party I planned but I sure like the company," she said as she opened her speech.

Clinton backers described themselves as sad and resigned. "This is a somber day," said Jon Cardinal, one of the first in line. Cardinal said he planned, reluctantly, to support Obama in the general election. "It's going to be tough after being against Obama for so long," he said.

Republicans quickly launched a "Clinton vs. Obama" page on the Republican National Committee's Web site drawing attention to her criticism of Obama during the campaign.

President Bush praised the symbolism of the 2008 field.

"I thought it was a really good statement, powerful moment when a major political party nominates an African-American man to be their standard bearer," he said in an interview Friday with an Italian journalist. "And it's good for our democracy that that happened. And we also had a major contender being a woman. Obviously Hillary Clinton was a major contender. So I think it's a good sign for American democracy."

I just have to say that Hillary supporters are laying the sexism card on the wrong entity. The media was both sexist AND in the case of Fox News RACIST. Senator Obama was NEVER disrespectful to Hillary. He cannot be blamed for Hillary's poor campaign organization (no candidate will EVER ignore caucus states again!), fiscal mismanagement, and Bill's comments that have hurt his relationship with the black community. I know in my heart that Bill and Hillary are not racist, but when you say that a black candidate's campaign is a "fairy tale", we will not just sit back and take it.

That said, I hope Barack nominates Hillary to the Supreme Court. We need her there!

So it goes.

Unless the Democratic leaders squash her, she is going to pursue this semi-concession until Denver. I'm sorry, but I do not trust her. The question now is: will her actions in encouraging her supporters result in a substantial loss of votes for Obama, or will the damage be minimal? Is she doing this to run again in 2012? It all depends on the erosion of support by her hard-core supporters; will they not vote in November, or will they hold their nose and vote? I can't imagine with their philosophy and perspective any of them voting for McCain. She is so polarizing she needs to be forced to deny her interest in the vice-presidential slot. Otherwise she will cause votes to be lost either way.

I followed this primary closely but for reasons of family I was forced to miss Hillary's last speech. I've seen all the others but I had to miss the last one. As I read the media posts I became at onece hopeful that she had rounded the corner to support her party and dissapointed that I had missed this moment, a moment that would live in politics. I was inspired to take time out to go read the speech. I say "inspired" as reading a speech is never the same, by far, as witnessing it but it was all I would have. The media will only replay soundbytes and this would be one to remember even if only from the text.

I am now ok. In fact I'm glad I missed it. After all that has transpired, after even her most strident supporters in the party cajoled her to be the statesman she purported herself to be and back the party's candidate, she re-ran the Hillary show. Two paragraphs and a sparse few other odd mentions of her party's candidate inserted carelessly in her stump speech turned self aggrandizing memoir.

Hillary is a very bright and determined woman. She seems to believe in the right ends but the right means escape her. For these reasons I hope she remains active in the party but forever out of the party's leadership.

luvobama,
Maybe not. Perhaps I am expressing the accumulatino of frustration at Hillarys old politics tactics at the birth of a new politics era. I stand prepared to accept.

I only, intensionally, posted this once each on two separate blog entries where it was appropriate as my response. The Huffpo has tech issues and it was late for me, I hope the kind of spirit will forgive the double post at any rate. I am glad you got one more chance to lash out at another "poster" since you seem to want to post so badly but poses such a derth of points on thread.

MY FELLOW WOMEN - VOTE 4 McCAIN or stay home... and guess what will happen??

- Obama will either return to the senate or a fabulously lucrative private practice and go down in history as the man who inspired the nation.

-Hillary Clinton will go down in history as the most divisively polarizing figure in recent politics. Her legacy ruined.

-The American people will continue to see record inflation, increasing unemployment, tax policies that favor the weatlthy, and continued loss of life in Iraq (and possibly Iran).

Yeah, we'lll show the Democrats... And the next time a woman trys to run for President... Oh wait, the next time a woman runs for president, Party leaders (Repubs and Dems) will refuse to risk supporting her because they will remember what happened the last time a woman failed to win the nominiation.

Lives may be lost, our family and friends may suffer, feminism may suffer, But hey!! We'll show them!!! Won't we???

Seriously ladies... I know its disappointing, and angering, but at the end of day, who are we really hurting by staying home or voting for McCain??

Oh was that the plan all along? Slap them in the face and say what ever the hell you want to say and in the end they'll come around and fall in line. Hillary Clinton doesn't own me or my vote, so I advise her to not waste her time trying to get my vote in November.

I was at the MA State convention yesterday and when I heard John Kerry mention that "We cannot allow sexism and racism to continue as it did in this election." My blood boiled even more because where the hell was he to make that point when it counted. Needless to say, for the first time in his career as a MA senator, he is going to face a democratic primary challenger for his seat. I wish him the best of luck and if he wants his seat, he better win my vote during the primary debates.

Don't Vote for Kerry. He and Kennedy both betrayed the will of the people of MA. He voted for his own personal agenda instead of for the people who elected him.

Obama was attacked relentlessly by the media and the clinton camp and supporters, NO demacrat even his SD's stepped in when Rev. The think that is worrysome and questionable is that it's not convincing them. Her speech just fueled skepticism with bo's suppoters and furthered her supporters hopes.

She needs to do the following: give up her delegates, give up her designs on the veep slot, strongly encourage her supporters to shut down those "h for president" websites, and take back the statement "mac would be a better commander-in-chief".

Don't be a "spoiled brat", Vote for OBAMA.

REALISTIC VIEW for staying home or Voting McCain:

1. Obama goes back to senate, like John Kerry, Al Gore and John Edwards did and fades into the political background because he was ultimatley not electable. He writes more books and become extremely wealthy.

2. Congress creates a law that states someone must be 35 yrs and served at least one full term as US senator or Governor before being eligible to run for President.

3. Hillary Clinton returns to the Senate more powerful than ever and ultimately seen as the person that "should have and could have" been President had the party listened to her.

4. Rule created - superdelegate vote as originally intended - to make crucial party decisions (not to be pressures to follow the will of people nonsense).

4. John McCain, the most liberal conservative, is honored by his country for heroic duty and an entire life of public service by becoming president. He's pro-environment, shares the democratic position on immigration, seeks government reform, against raising taxes, brings foreign relationship experience.... and changes the course of country, as any NEW administration will.

5. Lastly, to stay home or Vote McCain sends a clear signal to the media who manipulated and marketed this election. It says our "news" coverage cannot become like Al Jazeerah. Future elections would be determined by candidates relationships with news anchors, commentators and media outlets... if people simply voted for Obama because the media "tells you too" by villifying some and glorifying others.

Hill is still trying to figure how she is going to weasel ob out of the nomination. Perhaps she has already figured it out and is just playing for time. I do not trust that woman. She has already proven that she is a liar, a cheat and a conniver. She's got people thinking that she wants to be vp. What she really wants is to be president, and she is capable of doing anything she feels she has to do in order to achieve that. All this playing nicey nicey from her is just to stay in the game. Mark my words. We are going to see some more cr@p from her later on.

I used to be 100% for Hill. I always felt very positive towards her and her husband, but after this, I have come to dislike both of them. I don't think I'll ever get that good feeling back again.

I don't feel that ob should have her on his ticket. If she does not succeed in weaseling the nomination from him and he does succeed in becoming the president, it would be very dangerous to his presidency to have her in the White House. I would still vote for him if she is on the ticket, but I don't have to like it.

The reason she did not mentioned beating McCain is because she want to come back in the race and beat him herself. Remember she never concede to BO she only suspend. This way she can come back at a later time.

I still cannot bring my self to trust her. Even though she gave a great speech, I am having doubt's she really meant it. In her speech she said she would campaign on the road if he needed her to. I am wondering if that would mean keeping her in the spotlight, at BO's expense? I am still very skeptical. I sincerely hope I am wrong but, I doubt it based on her credability in the past.

If you see her on the ticket, then you seriously want to tempt fate. She is so convinced that "something" will go wrong (a scandal or something worse), that she is willing to risk the presidency in 2012. That is why she came out with the "A" statement.

I would never want to see her fill bo's shoes if he were president. I would hate her for life and so would the rest of the world.

You heard the lady!! Let's squash this BS and focus on squashing John McCain!! Rove is advising McCain's campaign and you can be sure that they're going to employ divide and conquer strategies to the hilt. Hillary Clinton gave a great speech, one of her best IMHO. Recall her message - it is important that we stop squabbling about the PAST and focus on the huge challenge looming ahead - the FUTURE general election. It is NOT going to be easy and if we learned ANYTHING this primary, it should be that one should NEVER take anything for granted, one must plan ahead, work hard and successfully execute a winning strategy.
If ending the needless loss of life in Iraq is high on your list, if stopping our nation from sinking further into debt is something you're concerned about, if leaving future generations a planet with clean air and a healthy enviroment is something that you feel strongly about, if preserving the rights and constitutional protections we enjoy is something you feel is the basis of our strength as a nation, then each one of us needs to join together and work to ensure that there is a Democratic President in the White House (and I speak as an Independent). We can not rest on our laurels and allow division to fester. A team engagesd does not have time to bicker. Let's get out there and work to get Barack Obama into the White House!!

If the Hillary supporters who insist they will vote for McCain do so, they will have the blood of American soldiers and innocent Iraqi's on their hands. If the supporters of Hillary walk away pouting then they probably weren't real Dems to begin with. No Dem worth their salt would have anything to do with putting McCain in the White House. I say go ahead and give them a little more time to grieve, after all, alot of them put their heart and soul into the effort. Then let's remind them about "the big tent" and invite them back in with open arms. Those who have been mean-spirited online and divisive in their blogs and comments must make a special effort. The blood of american soldiers? You've learned a LOT from the Republican Party, haven't you? On the one hand we had the Rove machine telling us we're traitors, and on the other hand we have destructive elements like yourself telling us how to vote, otherwise we'll have blood on our hands. Personally, I'm not in favor of wrestling control of Washington away from Republicans just so I can hand it over to those of worse character. I can't believe you said that. And I can't believe that you said "a lot of them" put their heart and soul into the effort to elect their candidate. Yeah, I'd say 18 million is quite more than a lot. It's half the country, fool. Half the country voted for a different democratic candidate than you, and you've pummeled that choice into the ground. But this happens with power struggles I guess. Get rid of Batista get Castro. I'm far from proud of my party today. And I just might do the unthinkable because I'm so disgusted. After voting Democratic for 30 years I may just stay home in November.

I have been an enthusiatic supporter of Obama from the beginning and a strong critic of the Clintons. But people -- it's over. Obama is the nominee and on Saturday Clinton, for whatever reason, delivered the gracious concession speech (because that is what it was) that we were all waiting to hear Tuesday. Just as we urged Clinton to withdraw for months because there simply was no way she could win, so too must we now stop attacking her because there is absolutely no point in doing so any more. McBush is the adversary. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE: direct your passion and your energy at him, and him alone.

Yeah, you would THINK your comrades would stop attacking her and her supporters. Yeah, you would think there was no point. But even while she's giving a gracious speech and bowing out, you people are stomping on the body while it's still warm. Passion and energy? How about a dose of good old fashioned, brown-shirted political bullying? Cause that's all I see. Once you turn that faucet on, it's hard to turn off. Good, you won. But don't expect me to applaud, or contribute, or even watch. I'm a traditional Hillary supporter who confidently voted for Obama in my primary because I thought he was the compelling candidate. But, I'll tell you, it's been pretty disgusting to watch ever since. I feel like my vote has been thrown in my face. And I don't know if I want to participate in November. I'm not sure I recognize my party anymore, you're all acting like republicans, the very people I want out of the white house.
