Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her pioneering campaign for the presidency on Saturday and summoned supporters to use "our energy, our passion, our strength" to put Barack Obama in the White House.

"I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," said the former first lady, delivering the strong affirmation that her one-time rival and other Democratic leaders hoped to hear after a bruising campaign.

Amid tears from her supporters, Clinton issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama, the first black to secure a presidential nomination, represent.

"Children today will grow up taking for granted that an African-American or a woman can, yes, become the president of the United States," she said.

Watch:

For Clinton and her backers, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination.

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it has about 18 million cracks in it and the light is shining through like never before," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to occupy, as president this time.

Indeed, her speech repeatedly returned to the new threshold her candidacy had set for women. In primary after primary, her support among women was a solid bloc of her coalition. She noted that she had received the support of women born before women could even vote.

But her main goal was to heal the rift in the party -- one that cleaved Democrats in part by class, by gender and by race.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said in her 28-minute address. Loud boos competed with applause.

With that and 13 other mentions of his name, Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois, who awaits Arizona Sen. John McCain in the general election. "We may have started on separate journeys but today, our paths have merged," Clinton said.

Obama, in a statement from Chicago where he was spending the weekend, declared himself "thrilled and honored" to have Clinton's support.

"I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run," he said. "She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans."

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. Aides said Obama watched Clinton's speech live on the Internet. His campaign put a photo of the New York senator on its Web site and urged supporters to send her a message of thanks. Likewise, Clinton's Web site thanked her backers. "Support Senator Obama today," her Web page said. "Sign up now and together we can write the next chapter in America's story."

Party leaders welcomed the new alliance.

"As you may know, I was a boxer. And I've seen many fights go the distance," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada. "But never have I seen one where everyone came out stronger -- until now. Because of the unprecedented number of new voters and the tremendous amount of enthusiastic supporters all the Democrats brought to the primary process, we stand ready to win the White House in 2008."

Both Obama and Clinton stood to gain from the new collaboration.

Obama could use the women and blue-collar voters who flocked to Clinton's campaign. She could benefit from his prodigious fundraising to help retire a debt of as much as $30 million. Clinton loaned her campaign at least $11.4 million; by law only, she has until the summer Democratic convention to recoup it.

Clinton also has told colleagues she would be interested in joining Obama as his running mate. On Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an Obama supporter, said she had made "a powerful case for her eligibility" to be on the ticket.

Joining Clinton on stage Saturday were her husband, the former president, and their daughter, Chelsea, to loud cheers from the crowd. When she spoke, they stepped away. Her mother, Dorothy Rodham, watched from the floor to the side of the stage and wiped away a tear.

In deciding to suspend her campaign, Clinton kept some options open. She gets to retain her delegates to the nominating convention this summer and she can continue to raise money. It also means she could reopen her campaign if circumstances change before the Denver convention, but gave no indication that was her intention.

As soon as Clinton finished speaking, some of the nearly 300 Democratic party leaders and elected officials across the country who had pledged their support to her as superdelegates released statements announcing they now back Obama. The switchers included some of Clinton's most high-profile supporters, including Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Maine Gov. John Baldacci.

Clinton supporters began lining up at dawn to attend the farewell address. A smattering of Obama backers showed up as well, saying they did so as a gesture of party unity.

As they awaited her arrival, campaign staffers milled the room, exchanging hugs and saying goodbye.

Clinton seemed almost buoyant in her address, feeding off the energy of a loud and appreciative crowd.

"Well, this isn't exactly the party I planned but I sure like the company," she said as she opened her speech.

Clinton backers described themselves as sad and resigned. "This is a somber day," said Jon Cardinal, one of the first in line. Cardinal said he planned, reluctantly, to support Obama in the general election. "It's going to be tough after being against Obama for so long," he said.

Republicans quickly launched a "Clinton vs. Obama" page on the Republican National Committee's Web site drawing attention to her criticism of Obama during the campaign.

President Bush praised the symbolism of the 2008 field.

"I thought it was a really good statement, powerful moment when a major political party nominates an African-American man to be their standard bearer," he said in an interview Friday with an Italian journalist. "And it's good for our democracy that that happened. And we also had a major contender being a woman. Obviously Hillary Clinton was a major contender. So I think it's a good sign for American democracy."

I was glad to hear Hillary's supportive words for Obama. However -- her motivation? Her back was against the wall. The DNC leaders forced her to do it, or else her future with the party would be seriously compromised. I think that the happy words should be for the party leaders here, not for Ms. Clinton's good heart.

My husband is a therapist and he said her body language alone showed she was doing something she didn't want to do, or make it very believable either. Her nostrils kept flaring like she was really mad about it and she went on way too long before she even mentioned Obama. Of course, as a narcissist I guess she figures she's still more important. She gave the speech because she had to, I wasn't as happy as most of you are here with it. Too little too late.

Many Clinton supporters aren't going to forget how Clinton was treated, and how they as supporters were treated. The things that have been said and done.

The Obamas burned a lot of bridges to get where they are, and now they think they can just act like none of it ever happened. Everyone hold hands and sing.

Not very realistic.

Mr. Obama was trashed mercilessly by both Clinton and McCain. MERCILESSLY. Unbelievable that comments like this come up. How exactly WAS HRC treated by Obama? He's been nothing but gracious to her. This is kind of pettty, isn't it?

Nobody's perfect. That includes Obama. That includes HRC. Let's leave it at that and move on.

So all those hateful email circulated by the C camp and surrogates which stated that O is a muslim, that he studied in a madrasa, that his Kenyan grandfather was a terrorist, that he's a marxist, that he's unpatriotic, and the picture of him in Kenyan garb, that's fair treatment, that's not hateful, vicious lying propaganda?

That's not all: Ferraro's and Bill's racist allusions, Hillary drawing racial lines into the voting demographic and then race-baiting in KY and WV.

We were just supposed to keep silent and not passionately defend our candidate, right? We were just supposed to give her a pass on all this? She did all this because O challenged her "entitlement". Is that fair? Or is it envy?

I would state that most of the hateful, racist vitriol came from your camp, and we were naturally reacting, and forgive us for sometimes over-reacting but you have to admit, this called for outrage on everyone's part.

You state that O burnt bridges, or is it really the other way around? H alienated more long-time colleagues than any candidate I've ever seen by going down this path.

I'd say everything that happened she brought upon herself, and therefore you should turn your disappointment and bitterness towards her. Had she taken another path, I would be congratulating you on her victory. Right now, all I feel is anger towards her for causing this deep division and resentment between us.

I really find it ironic that you blame O ba ma supporters for having burned bridges. There's been so much vitriol on both sides. O ba ma supporters have been just as invested in their candidate as you have been in yours.

But what we've gotten are a lot of curses that he's not qualified has no resume is far too liberal and on and on and on. You fail to mention that O ba ma has more legislative experience than dose the big H. Has more community work experience than does the big H. Never accused her of not being ready to handle the responsibilities and never forced any of the relationships in her life, much less she herself, to be vetted. Not all the dead people left in their (both the CI in tons), the court case hanging fire (p-aul v. cI in ton). Never forced her to deal with Canadian N A F T A memo that showed it was she and not O ba ma giving the wink-wink-nudge-nudge about the N A F T A rhetoric...(will continue) end of part 1

" HuffPost's Pick

In order for the democratic party to succeed, healing conduct will need to follow the powerful words spoken today. Clinton"s speech offered a good beginning towards healing the divisions between her supporters and those of Sen. Obama.

While Clinton spoke powerful words calling for the healing of party divisions, republicans today released three pages of damaging attacks previously made by Sen. Clinton which she had directed against Sen. Obama."

I'm not sure what it means to be Huff Post's Pick but I would like to know where this list by the Republicans can be found...or is this just another accusation in general terms that have been leveled against Hillary. Could you advise what this list is???

There remains much bitterness out there. The bitter statement if though it was mis quoted did not go over well. I went out to do a garden consult today and the issue came up and became very distracting.
It was sad. The lady said she would vote for Obama. She was an Hillary supporter. I must add I would have been pleased with either, but very pleased with Obama our next president. We must come together and heal. I really liked Hillary's speech On Saturday!!!!

1. I'm black and saw the Clintons turned into "racist" by people with an agenda of winning the nomination for their candidate. I cannot respect turning comments made, into racial slurs in order to fit a narrative.

2. On the issue of the Supreme Court Justice. The president nominates, the senate confirm. The democrats make up a majority of the Senate. If they are too weak to stand up to republicans on the nomination of the SCJ, then they need to go. I'm not worried about Roe v. Wade if Mccain is president.

3. On the war. No democrat is going to leave Iraq without ensuring that it is stable enough to leave, so let's get real about that.

You saw the Clintons "turned into racists"? No, no, you didn't see them turned, but TURN into racists to fit their own political ends. "Hard working WHITE Americans...."... "In this country we have a tradition of voting against people for ALL KINDS OF REASONS...."... "He is LUCKY TO BE BLACK..."... "JESSE JACKSON won South Carolina too..."...

Exactly what is it you thought that she and her campaign was trying to say? Wake up! Sometimes what you see (and here) is EXACTLY what you get.

I'm so sick of listening to all the gushing over this self-serving tripe Hillary called a concession speech. She deserves about half the credit she's getting. Here are the reasons:

1. Referencing her "18 million votes". Just a subtle way of pushing her complete BS argument that she won the popular vote when she didn't . Hawkings and Einstein together couldn't be decipher the formula she's using.

2. The inference that it's more historic that she, a white woman ran AND LOST, than a black man ran AND WON. "Women, women, women, glass ceiling, women women, women, historic, women, women, women, a force women, women, women. Oh, and they said I had to say that it might be good some black kid out there could be inspired by seeing a black president. You know, whatever...."

3. "We've proven that in the 21st century no prejudice is acceptable". Did she actually the unmitigated gall and brass plated cajones big enough to even utter that?! Oh yeah, racism is terrible. Unless of course it gets her votes, then it's all good.

Yeah, she pointed out the obvious. It'd be better to have a democrat than a republican in the white house. Duh.... But this self serving trash she called a concession speech earns her zero credit with me. She's got a helluva long way to go before she gets any kind of reprieve in my mind.

Excuse you? I started out supporting Edwards and when he was gone, I thought for half a second about going with Hillary despite admiring Obama (and secretly pulling for him). Oh, but all that was before S. Carolina. Before she showed her true colors... or should I say her fixation on color. That's when I knew Barack was the right choice. The right combination of hope, idealism and practicality. I jumped right on the bandwagon.

After that I've watched the steady decline of her rhetoric and thus the further revealing of her true nature and thoughts on race in this country (as she obviously thought so little of this country that she figured reminding everybody that he was black would get her the edge). I was just waiting for her to pull a Michael Richards.

I'm not a poor winner Hillary was a poor loser, pulling every nasty trick in the book despite knowing the contest was over. Now she's reaping what she's sown with me. She earned this disdain. Now she has to earn some redemption. Simple as that.

Well then go crawl in a hole and fume and rant. The adults have work to do stopping McCain and getting this country on a new footing. Immature tantrums would be counter-productive and we really don't have time or energy for it.

Grow up or get out of the way. Please.

You are extremely condescending. You're alienating people who are on your side. Stop trying to bully us into embracing someone who doesn't have bo's best interests or even the party's best interests, but her own self-interests at heart. You have very little faith in bo if you think he can't hang on to this victory without having to be her lap dog.

That is ridiculous. No one is in the way of unity accept for H-illary herself and her bitter supporters talking about voting for McCain. She has a lot to make up for and will take some time to begin to trust her again. She has to earn it. A forced speech maybe good for some people, but for others it will take a lot more.

Unity is important but if it is okay for crying H-illary fans to need time gather their composure, why is wrong for B-Rock supporters to need time for the trust to be restored?

One speech does not equal a free pass to erase all of the horrible things she has said and done. She needs to earn the trust back.

No need to personally insult Brothaman for expressing an opinion. It's great that C.l.i.n.t.o.n gave this speech, but realistically, it IS customary for the loser to admit they lost and throw their support behind the nominee. It is not necessary to practically deify C.l.i.n.t.o.n for doing so. Some of the gushing comments have been a bit over the top.

You mentioned "The adults have work to do stopping McCain..." and that is one area in which I think C.l.i.n.t.o.n missed a golden opportunity in her speech. Since so much of her speech was aimed at her core group (women) and focused on the historic aspect of her own campaign, it would have been appropriate for her to take a moment to point out that voting for McCCCain instead of O.b.a.m.a is not going to advance the women's issues she claims to espouse. I would've liked to see her capitalize on her self-proclaimed status as a fighter by taking on McCCCain specifically. I will watch to see if she does this in the future or if she is still secretly hoping he wins in November.

The best thing bo can do is pick his veep; not h, with her obvious negatives and especially the ones not as obvious, i.e. her over-powering presence. Then will start a major turnaround, and reason will begin to overshadow passion, and she will no longer be able dangle her bargaining chip in front of him to demand the veep slot.
If she's really committed to his success in November as she so stated, then she shouldn't object to him picking the best person who reflects his vision and complements his experience. Strangely, it's like telling someone they need to let go, because you have moved on to someone else. That finality is what makes everyone move on.
I thought that when she would endorse bo, the healing would start. I was wrong. Once again she is to blame. I was let down yesterday by the ostentatious nature of her performance, the press worked up to a tizzy in anticipation, and she, keeping everyone waiting on the edge of their seat, arriving fashionably late, and then delivering what seemed more like a victory/acceptance speech than a valedictory/concession speech framed by those imposing pillars in that impressive palatial great hall of the National Museum. This was meant to be a grand performance to keep the flame burning with her supporters. She was really telling them: “I don’t intend to go quietly into the sunset”, and once again, she rubbed bo’s nose in her self-proclaimed victory.

Hillary Clinton did herself proud on Saturday. That was fully expected as she is a classy lady.

She could have been the nominee except for one thing. Mark Penn. But she is the one that hired Mark Penn so she has nobody to blame but herself. I said many times "let Hillary be Hillary". She won most of the debates. She was a good candidate with a very poorly managed, backward looking campaign. Running for a Bill Clinton 3rd term was a big mistake.

But let me say it again, Hillary Clinton did herself proud on Saturday.

I supported Obama throughout the primary season, but was always willing to give Hillary the props she deserved. After all, which of us Obama supporters didn't intend to support Hillary a year ago? I agree her "downfall" was probably her staff and handlers. But no matter what, there can only be one winner, so it doesn't mean much to blame anyone at this point. Lets move on like the Dems were supposed to act like. I know there are people who don't like and don't trust Hillary anymore. They are suspicious of her wanted to suspend her campaign rather than offically concede defeat. I can tell you this much. If Obama were to found truly guilty of some heinous deed...and doubt very seriously he will...then we wouldn't be true Democrats if we didn't rally around Clinton again. I hope to never see another GOP administration in my lifetime.

Three cheers! It was a gracious and eloquent speech. I have to give her credit for making this happen. If she brings her supporters along in the general election, it will make a big difference. This election is about all of us. It's about our future, and the world we will create for the next generation. The Democratic Party needs the power and courage that the women who have backed Clinton can bring to this campaign. Every woman counts. And I am grateful to Clinton for starting us off with this inspiring and crucial message.

Oh, by-the-way none of them have anything to do with her as a "woman". Entitlement by the CLINTON;S combined with a talent for playing the victim-card whenever they need to correct some negatives. Boy are they great actors hence Bill's addiction to Hollywood.

So if you don't like Obama go whatever way you wish. And if, or when, Obama wins don't ask for any faovrs.

And if he looses then you have my deepest apologizes.

They have to make sure it's sanitary and reflects positions which Huffington Post deems valid. Anyone who dares to make comments which fall outside the two adversarial positions that the moderators wish to promote is denied a voice.
