WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her pioneering campaign for the presidency on Saturday and summoned supporters to use "our energy, our passion, our strength" to put Barack Obama in the White House.

"I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," said the former first lady, delivering the strong affirmation that her one-time rival and other Democratic leaders hoped to hear after a bruising campaign.

Amid tears from her supporters, Clinton issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama, the first black to secure a presidential nomination, represent.

"Children today will grow up taking for granted that an African-American or a woman can, yes, become the president of the United States," she said.

Watch:

For Clinton and her backers, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination.

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it has about 18 million cracks in it and the light is shining through like never before," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to occupy, as president this time.

Indeed, her speech repeatedly returned to the new threshold her candidacy had set for women. In primary after primary, her support among women was a solid bloc of her coalition. She noted that she had received the support of women born before women could even vote.

But her main goal was to heal the rift in the party -- one that cleaved Democrats in part by class, by gender and by race.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said in her 28-minute address. Loud boos competed with applause.

With that and 13 other mentions of his name, Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois, who awaits Arizona Sen. John McCain in the general election. "We may have started on separate journeys but today, our paths have merged," Clinton said.

Obama, in a statement from Chicago where he was spending the weekend, declared himself "thrilled and honored" to have Clinton's support.

"I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run," he said. "She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans."

Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. Aides said Obama watched Clinton's speech live on the Internet. His campaign put a photo of the New York senator on its Web site and urged supporters to send her a message of thanks. Likewise, Clinton's Web site thanked her backers. "Support Senator Obama today," her Web page said. "Sign up now and together we can write the next chapter in America's story."

Party leaders welcomed the new alliance.

"As you may know, I was a boxer. And I've seen many fights go the distance," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada. "But never have I seen one where everyone came out stronger -- until now. Because of the unprecedented number of new voters and the tremendous amount of enthusiastic supporters all the Democrats brought to the primary process, we stand ready to win the White House in 2008."

Both Obama and Clinton stood to gain from the new collaboration.

Obama could use the women and blue-collar voters who flocked to Clinton's campaign. She could benefit from his prodigious fundraising to help retire a debt of as much as $30 million. Clinton loaned her campaign at least $11.4 million; by law only, she has until the summer Democratic convention to recoup it.

Clinton also has told colleagues she would be interested in joining Obama as his running mate. On Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, an Obama supporter, said she had made "a powerful case for her eligibility" to be on the ticket.

Joining Clinton on stage Saturday were her husband, the former president, and their daughter, Chelsea, to loud cheers from the crowd. When she spoke, they stepped away. Her mother, Dorothy Rodham, watched from the floor to the side of the stage and wiped away a tear.

In deciding to suspend her campaign, Clinton kept some options open. She gets to retain her delegates to the nominating convention this summer and she can continue to raise money. It also means she could reopen her campaign if circumstances change before the Denver convention, but gave no indication that was her intention.

As soon as Clinton finished speaking, some of the nearly 300 Democratic party leaders and elected officials across the country who had pledged their support to her as superdelegates released statements announcing they now back Obama. The switchers included some of Clinton's most high-profile supporters, including Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Maine Gov. John Baldacci.

Clinton supporters began lining up at dawn to attend the farewell address. A smattering of Obama backers showed up as well, saying they did so as a gesture of party unity.

As they awaited her arrival, campaign staffers milled the room, exchanging hugs and saying goodbye.

Clinton seemed almost buoyant in her address, feeding off the energy of a loud and appreciative crowd.

"Well, this isn't exactly the party I planned but I sure like the company," she said as she opened her speech.

Clinton backers described themselves as sad and resigned. "This is a somber day," said Jon Cardinal, one of the first in line. Cardinal said he planned, reluctantly, to support Obama in the general election. "It's going to be tough after being against Obama for so long," he said.

Republicans quickly launched a "Clinton vs. Obama" page on the Republican National Committee's Web site drawing attention to her criticism of Obama during the campaign.

President Bush praised the symbolism of the 2008 field.

"I thought it was a really good statement, powerful moment when a major political party nominates an African-American man to be their standard bearer," he said in an interview Friday with an Italian journalist. "And it's good for our democracy that that happened. And we also had a major contender being a woman. Obviously Hillary Clinton was a major contender. So I think it's a good sign for American democracy."

Well it's all over now, Hillalry gave her speech, and it was a damned good one!! However, the mediat has spent the last 48 hours talking about Hillary and her speech, and what she wants to do!! Maybe not intentionally, but I think she stole the spotlight from Obama's historic win. Hillary, Hillary, Hillary, every cable news outlet is talking about her speech and her future. Obama won the nomination, but Hillary's speech was the topic this weekend. So much for Obama's win!!

What did she give bo with this speech? Do you think her ardent supporters aren't seeing right thru it? I went on her site, and they read between the lines and imagined her fingers crossed behind her back, and they're flocking to sites like "puma" and "cl#ntondems".

Meanwhile she gains an opportunity to reach a much broader pool of supporters for herself, as she campaigns with bo, while maintaining her own in a shadow campaign, and they remain encouraged by her prior mantra: "anything can happen".

Did she state that bo would make a great commander-in-chief as opposed to jmac? No. Did she offer up her delegates? No. Did she concede? No.

I know some say she's suspending to keep raising funds. You believe what you want to believe and I'll believe her when I see her deliver all her delegates to bo, and not a minute sooner.

The only thing that changes about this woman are her pantsuits. She will be like "brutus" on the road with "caesar", and the sight of her silent treachery will make my stomach churn, as she quietly tries to win the hearts and minds of o's supporters.

Change we can believe in? Well, the first change needs to be stopping the continually harping on the wrongs of Hillary Clinton by Obama's supporters on every blog around might be the best. It's time for Obama to publically and verbally in his next speech call off his attack dog supporters who have fouled the blog waves all over the internet with the base attacks that sound like the republicans of old. They are still scared to death that he might consider her on his ticket and keep saying all who supported her are racists, bitter, uneducated old, etc. Well, some of us just want what she stands for that separates her from him with the number one issue for me being universal health care. How anyone voted (or did not vote) 6 years ago is now irrelevant. How we deal with the here and now is what counts. Obama for the most part got his votes based on his non vote regarding the Iraq war...his most fervent supporters could not distinguish much on any other policies he has put forward and the reality is that that vote of Clinton deep sixed her no matter how good a candidate she was or for that matter Biden, Edwards too. Now Obama is going to have to have that debate he so conveniently says "If that's a debate they want, I'll be happy to have that debate" on all sorts of issues. Deal with the here and now, here and now!

I don't think any republican would have a snowball's chance this general election ... no matter what his/her name is!

And, I really don't think she will have the desired impact she or her supporters hoped/hope for!

We won't get cocky or complacent ... but, I think this is going to be easy for O. It's like cruising down the other side of the mountain!

Why then are the polls showing an Obama lead against McCain only 49- 46 %?
Especially given the Repblican disgrace and McCain awful speechifying.

YES, I did the same thing....looked at Hillary's own website blog.

Supporters there seemed emboldened by having decided to disobey HIllary pleas for unity as though by expressing their love and admiration for her, they are freed to ignore her stated desire. And it is perfectly clear from what they say that they are doing what they think HIllary wants them to do.

One even suggested that they not vote for Obama, but for "McCain and Hillary. " She says that this way IF OBAMA LOSES, they can have a first time (no kidding) "Republican president AND a female Democrat president."...presumably she meant "vice president." Apparently this genius hasn't bothered to look it up: there is one vote, ONE that includes both president AND vice president FROM THE SAME PARTY; it is impossible to vote a split ticket.

Of course, she could be assuming that rules could be changed here too...afterall, rules are meant to be broken"...as Hillary's supporters have said many times here.

These people are incredibly arrogant in scheming to ruin things for Obama. One even promises to deliver "all of Pennsylvania" to Hillary.

Hillary has created a monster.; she has lost all control over these people. Even though she claims that there are 18 million of them that belong to her, I would be surpirsed if there are more than a few thousand crackpots who are advocating out and out rebellion. But they are doing it on HER WEBSITE.

What is this? Are comments now being permanently disabled on HuffPo?

Methinks, we are facing a massive, rightwing DOS-attack on several liberal forums today, so as to suppress any "leftish" communication.

Opinion?

I thought it was just me...what gives?...anyway, the two senators are very intelligent people and I imagine that they would hope their supporters would approach this campaign, intelligently and not continue to be divisive. It's Bush and Mccain that needs to be checked.

I've tried posting about 10 times today, on 6 or 7 blogs. ONE comment has been posted, though I never once used one word of profanity, vulgarity; no personal attacks, no divisiveness, no trashing anyone, quite the contrary! I don't get it; more censorship and moderating here than at HC's site; if that's possible. Confounding and discouraging, to say the least.

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed it isn't so much vulgarity or personal attacks that aren't getting posted, but comments which fall outside the two primary adversarial positions that Huffington Post wishes to promote. Only allowing comments that promote one point of view would be transparent and even worse, boring. So two positions are deemed valid for debate - one being the moderator agrees with and the other being an opposing point of view which has some merit, but falls short in comparison to the preferred argument. Anything else is deleted in the interest of promoting one argument over the other. The only problem is that, especially in this particular debate, there is a lot more gray than black and white, so those of us in the gray areas are catching on. Color me crazy, but it's the only thing I've been able to come up with.

"You can be so proud that, from now on, it will be unremarkable for a woman ....."

Given the nutcracker dolls, the C.U.N.T. group getting national MSM press, the willingness of the left to slur their own mothers and grandmothers as bitter old bixxes and rabid single issue voters, MSM pundits indulging in the kind of stereopical slurs that are publically unacceptable against a black candidate , it appears that previous civil limits on attacking women have been effectively abolished.

African Americans willing to to resort to campaigns such as Bro's- before- Ho's and telling African Americans that voting for H.C would be an act of self loathing has decimated a previously functional collaboration in fighting oppression.

Factor in the endemic lack of respect and regard for older women, no longer useful as breeders or sex objects in this culture, this campaign has shown that ,to the contrary,it will be QUITE remarkable for a woman to win in a presidential race, given the widespread wilingness to employ misogynistic tactics .

Given that H.C had PLENTY of policy error for Obamaists to go after , that these tactics were resorted to ,are puzzling.I can only conclude that people were gleeful to find a public venue to vent on women, en masse.

More remarkable will be to find a woman who would want to subject self and family to this kind of hate! The ceiling hasn't cracked, Hilary, the Left has.

As a 63 year old Female, this has been an historical year for America.
There can only be one President and his name is President Obama. Senator Clinton could have made it but her campaign took on a negative role. She is an intellegent Female, but didn't see the writing on the wall. Now she is acting like, a President in waiting for something to happen! Instead of coming into the fold, she decided to stand outside the window looking in. This isn't a Team Player.
The New Age of Politics has arrived! Either, take the economy seriously or keep oneself in the same old same old negative hole! But, don't ask those willing to roll up their sleeves and take action.
For me, I want a change, which will be hard, but I never was afraid of hard work. With each generation a movement comes about, and it is thrilling to say the least!

I remember JFK words: Ask, not what your country can do for you
Ask, what you can do for your country!
Please, remember these words when our next President (Senator) Obama calls.
I may not be around to see A Female President,( I hope I will) but I am very Pleased to see A White/African American become the Next President! We are all Americans, Male/Female, All Races, All Beliefs, United as ONE standing shoulder to shoulder - this country as taken the Biggest Leap EVER!

So, it appears from polling that there are approximately 39% of the Clinton voters who will not vote for Obama or they will simply stay home and not vote. I am one of them. There has never been a more fundamentally troubling campaign and it has left me wondering if the entire Democratic party is as sick as it appears to be. The sheer, mob-mentality that beat down around Hillary last week after her South Dakota Defiant speech was disgusting enough for me to know that the democrats and the pundit that created Obama are not going to bully me into voting for him. I was appalled at the way the media and the Obama campaign just hammered Hillary and her supporters and at the way they slammed her every way they could. Now that she is the good little girl and did the nicey speach for the annointed one, she is ok again. Forget it. You lost me after South Dakota. And believe me, I am not the only one. I can personally count 10 other people who are CERTAIN THEY WILL NOT be voting for the big fix.

When George HW Bush said that Ronald Reagan practiced voodoo economics during a primary, that is a fundamentally different sort of attack than the (extensively documented HRC and WJC attacks on O.

HRC went to fitness for C in C and WJC went to patriotism. Not issues. Fundamental fitness to serve.

Different. This is a problem.

Any woman thinking of voting for John McCain, needs to read this article first

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1024927/The-wife-John-McCain-callously-left-behind.html

My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.’
Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons

Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans’ rights, said: ‘I have been following John McCain’s career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is – deceit…This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.’

But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics
McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

Everyone talking of how "gracious" Hillary's speech was makes me want to puke! Gracious would have been saying "Talk of Barack being a Muslim is ridiculous" instead of saying he's not....."as far as I know". Gracious would have been giving MLK his due instead of saying "It took a president to get it done". Gracious would have been NOT implying that only she and McCain were qualified to be president and Barack just makes speeches. Gracious would have been to NOT fuel racial tensions for her own political gain. You act as if there's no basis for staunch Obama supporters to be upset with Hillary. You act as if WE'RE the one's that are supposed to apologize for the classy campaign Barack ran and grovel for Hillary supporter votes. Well, get over yourselves! Vote for who you think is best for the country or sit on the sidelines, I couldn't care less. This Obama supporter sure as hell isn't going to beg for Hillary votes after the sleezy campaign you all rallied behind. Chants of "Denver!, Denver!" and you claim WE'RE the one's doing damage to the party? Go to hell and take Hillary with you.

Hillary can (and probably will) still be President...

I thought we could have a practical discussion about the likely after-effects of the HRC and WJ C attacks on O, but no one is "ready" , emotionally, or whatever, I guess.

Just a fact. They attacks are on tape, and they don't go to issues, they go to things like character and patriotism. That's unprecedented. They're going to hurt him.

If we can't even discuss this, I don't see much hope for unity.
