Chris Matthews Dons A Cowboy Hat (VIDEO)

Why did Chris Matthews put on a cowboy hat during Monday night's "Hardball?"

Was he finally so tired of hair-dye mix-ups that he opted for the cover-up?

Was he tempting Andrea Mitchell to call him a redneck (and then later apologize)?

Or was he merely paying homage to the state of North Dakota, where he spent the weekend "riding horses and talking politics?"

Watch the video below and decide for yourself:

Was he trying to be Don Imus? Imus is a better interviewer and not as creepy.

I was thinking the same thing. Trying to be Imus.

maybe in his movie mania sort of way he was portraying himself as midnight cowboy and coming out of the closet.

He was having fun. Maybe no one else is, but give him a break- there are more legitimate things to critique and discuss. We blame the media for not doing their job, and then we go off on tangents and character assassinations. We get what we deserve. What about the economy? The war? The candidates?

bingo.

Step away from the irrelevant-pipe and change the channel. Hell, the guy is giddy over his hat, let him play "pretend".

I will rip him, however, if he dons a beret.

Actually, he reminded me of Larry Hagman as "J.R. Ewing". I had no real problem with this. I thought it was amusing.

Because he's an idiot.

Am I right? Did I guess the answer correctly? What do I win?

Only half right ... he's a loser too.

Our little state of North Dakota doesn't get much publicity, so when I heard him say he visited here, my ears perked up! Not all North Dakotans wear cowboy hats; you see them mainly in the western half of the state as you get closer to the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Ours is a friendly, welcoming state. Come visit us sometime! The Lewis and Clark Trail goes through our state and I understand the hunting is great. I'm just wondering where Chris Matthews was in North Dakota and why.

I spent 3 years in North Dakota in the early 70s as a kid when my dad worked on the minute man silo. It was cold and the schools were tough. I thank them every day for giving me a real education . Good people and I learned there are many ways to spell the name Carlssen, Karlson,....

This is just a fluff piece. Why are people getting upset here? Lighten up.

Seriously, I like Chris Matthews, but that hat just doesn't work for him.

Can some wise person here please tell me why Spit-Ball Matthews says "Dick CHEEEEEENey"? What's with that pronunciation?

And can someone give Cowboy Chris a raise? His hair-- and that is a very iffy "his" and "hair"-- is looking ghoulish and way too white yellow and way too fake. Can he not afford a decent stylist with his MSNBC salary?

I've heard Matthews say that he pronounces it that way because that's how Cheney himself pronounces it.

Somebody bet him he wouldn't do it on air. That's my only explanation. I think he looks good in it, though.

Looking good Chris. It's time to have fun now that President Obama has been nominated the presumptive nominee.
