Gay Marriage Good For The Economy: UCLA Study

The California Supreme Court overturned the state's gay marriage ban in May, and a new study from UCLA says that gay marriage will be good for the economy:

A new study says same-sex weddings will provide California's economy with a substantial boost, creating thousands of jobs and much needed revenue.

The study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law says direct spending by same-sex couples will add $684 million to the state's wedding industry and $64 million to the state budget over the next three years.

The study estimates that half of California's 102,639 same-sex couples will marry over the next three years and another 68,000 will come from out-of-state. As many as 2,200 additional jobs will be created.

Civil Rights legislation was originally ushered in by noting racial discrimination was in violation of interstate commerce laws. Not exactly the moral highground, but damned effective !!

Who cares if its good or bad for the economy?!

I have yet to find a compelling reason for one group of Americans to deny a right that they enjoy to another group of taxpaying citizens. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" except if you are gay? Does that make you 3/5 of a citizen?

I am not gay. I am an American. And it is un-American to continue to deny American from marrying the person they love. They denied that right to my mother, who stayed with the same woman for 27 years. They deserved better. And I remember my grandfather who believed all the cr*p that the 700 club spewed, standing by the bedside of the woman as the laid dying, admitting that he was wrong and begging God for forgiveness for how he had treated the woman who had taken care of my mother since I was 2. It is a lesson that all of those with hatred and loathing in the false name of God should learn.

It is also not a Christian act and Christ's "Golden Rule" so plainly states. And trumping the words of Jesus with those of man is not a Christian act. Quit using God to justify your prejudice. He doesn't like that sort of thing.

Here is hoping that this isn't an issue in my generation and that I live to see a gay man or lesbian run openly for President someday.

It should be noted this is a conservative estimate. It's likely the economic benefits will be greater.
