Gina Gershon Breaks Silence On Vanity Fair's Link To Bill Clinton: "A Crazy, Outrageous Lie" (VIDEO)

Gina Gershon broke her silence and spoke out about the Vanity Fair article that linked her to Bill Clinton. Promoting her Broadway play "Boeing Boeing," Gershon appeared on Monday's "Live with Regis and Kelly." With Mario Lopez in for Regis, Gershon told the hosts her side of the story.

"It is such a crazy, outrageous lie that has nothing to do with me... Journalists, it's so scary, because they get these rumors, hearsay, put it in the story, and it goes around the world in a minute... Vanity Fair never even did fact checking.... These irresponsible journalists - they're not accountable for anything."

Through her lawyers, Gershon asked Vanity Fair for a retraction and correction last week, a request Vanity Fair denied.

Nice way to sell books. Make inferences. Wink, wink! Then deny that is what you meant. Forgetting it is Bill Clinton, why was it necessary to mention Gershon's name. It had no bearing except for the sake of titillation. That is not journalism.

Unfortunately, Gina hit the nail on the head. These "news" shows are becoming more a "tabloid" production, as they do not check out the sources, get ahold of a rumor, and report it. Now, they have a 'out' but stating the story "hasn't been corroborated yet", but we all know that too many folks still think the "news" shows report nothing but 'fact'. This has been all too clear during this presidential campgain, where people are too ready to believe the pundits rather than weighing the facts themselves. A little skepticism would serve them well...!

Dear Ms. Gershon,

If nothing really happened between you and Bill then you can sue for libel. Every time someone writes that Tom Cruise is gay, he doesn't say a word to the press. His lawyers sue and he always win.

If it isn't true, then hire a lawyer and sue for libel. Simple as that. The more you talk about it being outrageous, the less outrageous it sounds.

Libel law and slander in the US isn't so simple and Tom Cruise has NOT won any suits over stories he's gay, at least in the U.S. In Britain, the libel laws have been used by celebrities to sue over unfair reporting. But you don't see it here because the standard here is that No. 1 it's not true, No. 2 the reporter knew it wasn't true and that he reported it anyway with malice aforethought. All VF has to say is that it's true Washington gossips said Clinton and Gershon had a thing going. They didn't say he DID have anything going, just that it was gossiped about. So Gina Gershon has little recourse except to try to clear her name in the court of public opinion where she is already being accused of "protesting too much" The VF story could have made it's point without sliming the actress. But conveniently for them, it's hard for famous people to sue, so they'll use her name for titillation and let the unknowns, who have a much easier time suing, go unnamed.

I couldn't agree more with Gershon.

It's clear Vantiy Fair had absolutely nothing on this. It was a rumor of a rumor. And she's right to demand a retraction. At the very least they should issue a clarification that they have no evidence whatsoever of this.

Unfortunately Gershon is in one of those no-win situations where if she says nothing, everyone believes it and asks why she won't deny it. If she denies it (which any sane person who didn't sleep with some one and saw thin innuendo that they did printed) than she's denying it too strongly and therefore it must be true.

Her best hope is that it blows over. But it is very unfair to her.
