Times UK:

The UK Times scores the first interview with John McCain's first wife in the 2008 campaign season:

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain's first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Story continues below

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. 'I have no bitterness,'

she says. 'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn't the reason for my divorce.

'My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'

Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Read the full article here. Last week, McCain was pressed on his marital infidelities at a town hall meeting -- watch video and read an account here.

"wants to be 25". Er.. I had that problem too, much to my later remorse.

Uh, excuse me, but, what makes Cindy m such a catch? Ok, she's got the money, and she's younger, but her looks: NO WAY. Too skinny, too pale, too blonde, too unattractive too nondescript. What type of trophy would THAT be? For a loser?

Her family's money supported McCain's climb up the political ladder. They both like POWER.

This is the Republican candidate running on "values". I feel sorry for the first Mrs. McCain. To wait for years for your cheating husband to come home from Vietnam, (apparently Johnny had a lust for women while in the service also) and then he trades you in for a blonde barbie doll.

This is the guy that the conservative party has nominated! Wow! What will Tom DeLay do?

In addition, McCain called Cindy a c**t in public. True. Google it.

"Book: McCain temper boiled over in '92 tirade, called wife a 'cunt'Nick Juliano
Published: Monday April 7, 2008

John McCain's temper is well documented. He's called opponents and colleagues "shitheads," "assholes" and in at least one case "a f**king jerk."

But a new book on the presumptive Republican nominee will air perhaps the most shocking angry exchange to date.

The Real McCain by Cliff Schecter, which will arrive in bookstores next month, reports an angry exchange between McCain and his wife that happened in full view of aides and reporters during a 1992 campaign stop. An advance copy of the book was obtained by RAW STORY.

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*nt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days."

That is just such a sad story. I feel bad for both the wife and McCain also. He went through his hell, and then the wife went through her own hell.
I am an Obama supporter, but _man_ can you imagine what the Republicans would be saying if it had been Obama who had "abandoned" a first wife?

That was just cold and calculating. At that time in her life, having to deal with the pain, the reality of her disabilities and scars (physical, emotional), for her husband to leave her must have been a crushing blow to her already mangled self-esteem. His unfaithfulness during the end of their marriage must have really beaten her down, taken away her pride and self worth as a woman. My heart goes out to this poor woman who maintains her loyalty out of gratitude for the measly crumbs he has given her. What little respect I had for this man is gone.

What do Bush, McCain and Clinton (Bill) have in common?

One could argue that they all seem to carry around a lot of guilt about failing to become the ethical leaders and devoted family men that many strive for. Thus they all have anger controll issues.

I am not saying all politcians with moral issues have problems with their temper. But I do think these three stand out above the crowd.

You should read the full Mail Online story about this...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1024927/The-wife-John-McCain-callously-left-behind.html

An excerpt...

"Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics."

"'McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said. "

I read it all, a good article, eye-opening, but Virginia Beach is hardly a "faded seaside town." It is one of the top beach resorts on the Atlantic coast, full of people every summer, and a large, booming city even off-season.

Personally, this is what I dislike most about McCain. However, I will not be voting for him because of his position on ISSUES.

To be fair, he's not the only 40 yr old politician who dumped his first wife for a new and shiny trophy wife. It's a testament to his first wife's character that she has remained silent and doesn't condemn him. I do admire her! So does McCain's demonstrated war hero courage balance out his crass behavior towards his wives? I don't know if it matters in this campaign. (Although I do hope it will matter to the Republican Puritans who spend all their time worrying about other people's sex lives!)

Don't forget that his first wife waited for him, not knowing if, when, or what he would come back like if he made it home. Doesn't her loyalty warrant his? If that is acceptable behavior then this society has gone to hell in a hand basket. Another question, why in the world would a married man in his thirties, with three kids, volunteer to fly bombs or napaum or whatever over Vietnam? Something is wrong with him and if the dumb faction of the country puts him in office, I have a bad feeling we are going to find out. Sort of like we found out about bush.

I don't like the McCain, but marriages succeed or fail everyday for a variety of reasons--all of them personal. People criticized Hillary cause she wouldn't divorce Bill, and now they want to criticize McCain because he divorced his first wife. I know she was injured, and somewhat disabled, but if he no longer was happy, should he have stayed out of pity? You think she would've appreciated that? Both of them would've been miserable.

People fall in and out of love, and if one of the partners is not happy it's best for both parties for the union to end. He's been married to his second wife for 28 years. That's a pretty good stretch. Maybe she's the one he should be with, when its is all said and done. The divorce rate is almost 50% in this country. So who are we to judge? None of this has any relevance to what type of president he would be. Personally I think he'd be a disaster, but not because he divorced his wife.

He married the heiress one month after his uncontested divorce was final? Wow what a whirlwind courtship and marriage, all in one month. And it must have been so difficult to fall in love with and marry and stay married to a beautiful rich heiress twenty years younger than him. It's nobodys fault, it just happened. Marriage however doesn't stop him from dating if he so inclines, remember the lobbyist. What a piece of work.

I agree that marriages fail for a variety of reasons and really - it's no one's business but the couple - but it IS ironic that someone running in the "family values" party cheated on his crippled wife (who waited for him while he was a POW!) with a younger, richer woman.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:40 PM on 06/09/2008

The GOP has long ago demonstrated that their "family values" plank is pure bullshit. As for him choosing a younger, richer woman, would it have been better if he had chosen an older, poorer one?

It's just something low life about someone who will leave a spouse after a terrible accident and that spouse has suffered deformity. Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of people who probably see absolutely nothing wrong with this. However, it leaves a very sour taste in my mouth.

He did this in a very tactless and cruel way. It wasn't a case of "Honey, we just seem to have grown apart." It was "I need women, hot women, sorry, you no longer meet my standards." But many of the Viet Nam POWs who returned home were eventually divorced, there were just too many problems on both sides. Everyone tried to cling to "the way it used to be" but the reality was far different. The men had been through h***, the wives had become competent and independent. But to have his wife recovering from a severe auto accident, and then to just dump her so callously, rub her face in it, is just plain wrong and shows a shocking lack of character on his part.

Shengirl
I'm not minimizing the pain it must've caused, but he'd been tortured for five years, and she had been horribly disfigured. When they finally got back together after five years apart, both of them were no longer the person that they had married. That's a dual trauma that would've caused a lot of marriages to fall apart. Hell, most of the 50% that end in divorce fall apart for far less serious reasons. Look at all the divorces occuring with returning Iraq veterans.

I've been cheated on and unceremoniously dumped, and I certainly suffered for a time, but the bottom line that I came to grips with, was that you can't make somebody love you. And you can't guilt them into it. Love has to be voluntary not obligatory..

Marriages are very personal things, and without me knowing how things were in that McCain house, and how they interacted on a daily basis, I have to withhold judgement. I do know (from wathcing my parents) that when one or both of the people in a marriage is very unhappy and cannot work it out, staying together is just masochism. Life is too short, and we only live once.

He set her up financially for life, and paid all of her medical bills for life. As long as she's not bitter, why should we be? Like I said, I think McCain is the worst thing we need as a president, but not because he divorced his first wife.

Lets see my friend's marriage vows, to have and to hold in sickness and in health for better or for worse.......

Dosen't say anything about millionaire blonds that are eighteen years younger

Lev 20:10
And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

And Jesus declared that anyone that marries a divorced person is an adulterer.

Luke 16:18
Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (So Says Jesus)
