Times UK:

The UK Times scores the first interview with John McCain's first wife in the 2008 campaign season:

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain's first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Story continues below

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. 'I have no bitterness,'

she says. 'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn't the reason for my divorce.

'My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'

Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Read the full article here. Last week, McCain was pressed on his marital infidelities at a town hall meeting -- watch video and read an account here.

People who have studied palmistry will notice the way John McCain closes his hand over his thumb. This is typically a sign of end of life, giving up, or of great illness.

Before you get all excited about "palmistry", there are many signs of physical health that are revealed in the shape and appearance of the hands, fingers and nails. I read the "Scientific Laws of Hand Analysis" many years ago. The author's studies led him to become a doctor finally. Very interesting reading.

I think a very powerful video could be made with images of McCain, Cindy and his first wife interspersed with some of the stories about this, his treatment of women, (C. Word. flipping out and calling Cindy a "trollop" with her makeup painted on etc.) his voting record on women's issues mixed in with some other imagery that highlites and illustrates very graphically a misogynist viewpoint what voting for him means for a woman.
No text that attacks anyone, nothing but McCain, his words, his record.

maybe something at the end like Who do you want setting the agenda for your daughter's (grand daughter?) future?
Wish I had the energy.
know how.

What song would be a good background?
any ideas?

I have to think about this.

Love your ideas and your ideals-- a song that comes to mind is Helen Reddy's "I am Woman"- also Lesley Gore's 1960's "it's my Party and I'll cry if I want to".... it's a classic about getting dumped by a "johnny"

McCain transferred the Florida beach house to Carol and gave her the right to live in their jointly-owned townhouse in the Washington suburb of Alexandria. He also agreed to pay her alimony and child support.

You know what REALLY ticks me off, what should anger all women? It's the fact that you NEVER hear any of the "boys" in the MSM bringing up ANY of this stuff about McCain; not the cheating, the first wife, the slurs and nasty remarks he's made about his own wife...wives...Chelsea, Hillary. Male dalliances, post Bill, are only fair game apparently if it's some poor pedophile or gay Republican because well, "they're" not like them. More of the good ol' boys looking after their own because otherwise, who knows, next time it might be one of them whose ummm, "head" is on the chopping block. Boys will be boys. Pathetic.

Oh, it pisses us all off!
I don't think many people know about it... for exactly the reasons you say.
Maybe if he had been visited by Monica... nah.

Not only Post Bill, Pre Bill as well.
The whole Bill thing was all part of the neocon BS.
Listen when Hillary said there was a vast right wing conspiracy she was on the money. And not only on PNAC.

Grover Norquist was a key person in trying to engineer Clinton's defeat on EVERYTHING... particularly healthcare. He had the "Wednesday Group" 50 or so Repubs including lobbyists from NRA Christian coalition, Limbaugh and other media, an amazing list which I don't have room for here- who met every wed. to plot the destruction of the health care reform policy Clinon Admin. was working on
"At a Republican meeting in late 1993, Ohio Congressman John Boehner told Chamber [of commerce] President Richard Lesher and chief lobbyist William Lesher that it was "the Chamber's duty to categorically oppose everything Clinton was in favor of." Norquist and his network of operatives also attempted to cripple the Clinton administration by spreading rumors of financial and personal wrongdoing."

The Paradox of American Democracy by John B. Judis.

Gee, I think I'd be secretive too!
LOL

But I digress!
I just posted an idea for a video.
I'm going to send it to the Obama website along with a proposal on winning back some of the people who are so angry.

The MSM just can't bring themselves to acknowledge that they may have been taken in by the maverick "straight talker." Bill and Hillary are actually still together and Bill has dedicated himself to his wife's cause, but MSM won't give them the credit they deserve.

It's sad when you blame the "boys", (and rightfully so I might add), but not the girls in the MSM.
You mean only the "boys" lack of truth and integrity "...what REALLY ticks me off...", but the girls get a pass?

Others replying to your comment willing throw blame at "...the neocon BS." And "...Maybe if he had been visited by Monica..." "...Not only Post Bill, Pre Bill as well."

So Bill gets a pass but John doesn't?

In my leanings growing up, wrong is still wrong no matter who it is. For some around here, just some, their people can do no wrong.

The hypocrisies are endless!

I'd heard this story before and wondered why it wasn't appearing anywhere. Now it shows up in the British media.......what's that about?
I wonder if any of the U.S. MSM will pick this up?

The British media can't be pressured by anybody. They have far more freedom of the press over there than we do here with republican-owned media. I check with them quite often, just to see what's really going on.

This is appalling! It appears McBush views women as mere sex symbols. This is indeed very sad and every woman that calls her self a true woman must not near this guy not even with a ten foot pole talk less of casting her vote for him.

They both went through hell and survived. Many couples divorce for ;less reasons and they are not
judged so harshly. He was not selfish financially with her and she bears him no grudge His character is on trial because of his Senatorial behavior over the years. His temper and his disgusting verbal assault on his present wife together with his disregard for the welfare of veterans and children surely
are not the standards of an American President. We let the Supreme Court subvert states rights with-out a fight and look what we have had for eight years. Never again, No way.

John McCain's treatment of his first wife shows that he is very fickle and an opportunist. It's easy so tell by his opening statement whenever he gives a speech. "My Friends" that there is a phoniness about him, war hero or not. I agree with another poster that any Hillary supporter thinking of voting for John McCain should read this article. His first wife at least seems virtuous, while the present one's drug abuse and embezelment should be mentioned by the media. But will it, you can bet if it was Michelle Obama it would be front page news on a daily basis.
