Wife

Times UK:

The UK Times scores the first interview with John McCain's first wife in the 2008 campaign season:

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain's first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Story continues below

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. 'I have no bitterness,'

she says. 'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn't the reason for my divorce.

'My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'

Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Read the full article here. Last week, McCain was pressed on his marital infidelities at a town hall meeting -- watch video and read an account here.

"My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does."

I think this line is the most telling about McCain's state of mind and thought process....

illusions are his reality...

What's with Republicans and bedside divorces?
Newt Gingrich left his wife at her bedside while she was battling breast cancer and now this?
Wow! What a peach!
I know that i'm echoing the sentiments of a great many people here, but if those "angry white women" that want to punish Barack Obama for beating Hillary Clinton playing by her (and the Democratic National Committee's) rules really think that voting for McCain is in their best interest, please remember that he left a woman simply because she no longer looked like a swimsuit model from Philadelphia.
Or, as this woman so kindly put it in the Mail article, McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25.

Ah, yes... Those wonderful Republican "Family Values".

What a phony. Charming, Moderate "Maverick" John McCain - Star of THE DAILY SHOW and JAY LENO.

What a crock - John McCain is a far-right Conservative. He dumped his damaged goods and traded in for a bottle-blond millionaire (the one he now calls a "c@nt" when she had the temerity to tease him).

Even if you are not inspired by Barack Obama, you ought to be frightened by the prospect of a McCain presidency.

This is NOT a person you want with his finger on "the button".

That 3am phone call is likely to PISS HIM OFF!!

Carol fell into his fast-living world by accident. She escaped a poor upbringing in Philadelphia to become a successful model, married an Annapolis classmate of McCain’s and had two children – Douglas and Andrew – before renewing what one acquaintance calls ‘an old flirtation’ with McCain.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The story never mentions whether Carol's first husband died or she was divorced before renewing her "old flirtation" with old Johnny Boy. It seems to be glossed over. I get the distinct impression that old Johnny Boy is a serial offender, But if he was, it also implicates her and explains why it is being glossed over.

None of these people are angels. That's why Republicans need to stop the "Family Values" BS.

Let's have all the Cable Shows 24-7 run this story with all its ramifications--- put on his ex- the kids- their old friends, psychologists, sociologists-- Olbermann will probably run a wide path on this one- out of his and his networks deep respect for all women--

I see this as a tragic story about two people who suffered some incredibly bad luck. John McCain lost five years and the full use of his arms. Carol McCain lost the use of her legs. They both suffered an incredible amount of pain and eventually they lost their marriage. This is a sad story, but it doesn't really inform us about what kind of president John McCain would be. More pertinent are things like his role in the Keating 5 scandal, which raises questions about judgment and the stories about his angry outbursts, which raise questions about temperament. Then there are his positions on the issues, which are a conservative horror. Finally, look at the way his campaign has been run, which raises questions about judgment and managerial skill. There's enough out there about John McCain to criticize without going to what is clearly the worst chapter of his personal life. I for one and willing to cut him some slack there.

I agree. Should we hold this view, we all should have called for Clinton to exit the white house with his indiscretions and we did not. It is about Obama's and McCain's positions on things that matter to the masses. 50% of the people in this country get divorced, so does that mean all of them will make bad leaders?

It's not so much the fact that he got divorced that makes him look bad. It's the circumstances under which the divorce took place. It would be one thing if they had been unable to get over their respective traumas and the marriage would have dissolved over time. But Johnny Mac wasn't too traumatized to go shopping for an upgraded model right away.

So McCreep left his wife (after tomcatting around on her) because she was disfigured.
Makes me wonder how many wives stay with their husbands after the husband has been disabled and/or disfigured by serving in wartime.
Guess we can ask the Iraq vets, since with McBush we're guaranteed to have many more of them for a long time to come.

This story is heartbreakingly sad. So much for the sanctity of marriage. The repubs couldn't put forward a better candidate than this?

For the women who profess that they will vote for McCain because HRC did not get the Democratic nomination, I hope they will read this and I hope that the press will cover this story. He may be a war hero but a Saint he is NOT! McCain lost me years ago when he sold his soul to the Bush Administration - especially after what they did to him in South Carolina in 2000. But after reading this - all I can say is that he is an opportunist.

By the way, has anyone taken note of how much Cindy has changed her appearance in the last 8 years... I guess her short grey hair wasn't going to help the McCain is older than dirt claim.

He apparently is not treating the new wife much better. Any man who would call his wife a "painted whore" and use the C- word, in a public place within earshot of friends and press.....makes me wonder how he treats her in private. Certtainly does not sound like someone who has respect for women and expecially the one he "Loves".

Do you have any proof that he said that? That was reported by anonymous sources in one book. Many of the witnesses to the other alleged incidents in that book have said the incidents did not occur.

My Uncle Sol was a POW for the same amount of time as MCain-- he came home-- compartmentalized his life-- held on to his family values cause he has something that is ingrained called "character"--- and went back to his wife (who may not have been so kosher- as she had an affair with her-ex while Sol was away)-- but my point is-- CHARACTER-- some they have it-- some they don't-- P.S. Obama has it in spades-- so does Hillary-- so does Uncle Sol---

Just another reason why the disillusioned Hillary supporters will be hanging themselves if they go vote for McCain because their candidate lost the Democratic election.

And on top of all this, Cindy McCain developed a drug habit. She stole drugs from her own organization. The poor guy who blew the whistle on her, got fired!

Go to:
