Wife

Times UK:

The UK Times scores the first interview with John McCain's first wife in the 2008 campaign season:

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain's first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Story continues below

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. 'I have no bitterness,'

she says. 'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn't the reason for my divorce.

'My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'

Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Read the full article here. Last week, McCain was pressed on his marital infidelities at a town hall meeting -- watch video and read an account here.

I am looking for Clinton supporters to read this article and post their comments...so far it's been only Obama supporters. By the way, I don't see anyone running on here to dispute facts or come to McCain's defense.

I was an early Hillary supporter and she has great character--- she stuck by Bill- she is full of good qualities== and we should all never forget that when Bill went in for that life-threatening heart surgery followed with complcations-- she was right by his side at that NY hospital--

Well I'm glad to hear she did that for Bill. Unlike McCain who would bolt for a better life for himself. Geez.

What's your point?
The commentary is about McCain and how he treated his first wife. This is not how Hillary stood by her man. It's about how McCain did NOT stand by his wife. Hello???

I am a Clinton supporter.
Read my comments.
Not all, in fact not many will vote McCain and if the hate fest ever stops even less will.
Try listening to their gripes. why they are pissed off without telling them how wrong they are and to grow up or get lost.

People, all people want to be heard. that's pretty much it.
I think many of you know very well why many clinton supporters are angry and you know it isn't because Clinton lost.

Just my opinion of course.

John McCain rails against government sponsored healthcare and wants to allow insurance companies to cross state lines to sell policies. Why? Because some states have few restrictions on policies and allow abusive rates while the companies make huge profits by denying coverages and reducing benefits.

John McCain has always been on government sponsored healthcare since his father was an Admiral in the Navy when John was young. He doesn't want you to have the type of healthcare that he is provided because then he might lose some contributions from HMO's and insurance companies.

John's first wife, Carol, was guaranteed a continuation of her health policy as a part of the divorce agreement. What coverage did she have? My assumption is that she was on the military coverage that the Navy was providing the family. Did John McCain agree to continue paying his percentage of the premium that the government subsidized? He also would have covered her co-payments and deductibles. Again this would have been government subsidized.

I mention all of this not to demean his first wife or to infer that she should not have been provided this quality of coverage. I mention it because I find it disgusting that a Senator would deny universal healthcare for our nation while he used the military or government to his advantage.

Although, I've known of this story for many years, what I find amazing is the number of people who ignore and/or dismiss this character flaw, by continuing to paint him as the epitome of patriotism and having such good moral and ethical judgment and experience. Sen. Mcc is far from being honorable, respectable, and a symbol of integrity and good judgment. He has experience alright, as being a womanizer, adulterer, hot-headed dynamo ready to erupt, opportunist, opinionated uncouth selfish person that plays on the sympathy of many by being a "hero" and POW. Just remember that insincere pasty fake smile of his as he says "my friend" or think he's said something point on. Hopefully, this awakening will lend cause for those who are thinking about voting for Mcc to do further research on the man you think you know because of MSM portrayal.

Be not so bigoted to any custom as to worship it at the expense of truth.

I would enjoy reading a book by one of McCain's first children on what it was like, living on food stamps while daddy lived the high life. I'm sure we could find someone to help with that. My advise to his children is find a local support group, one like "Adult Children of Republicans". It might help with the healing.

Don't forget that more recently McCain opposed the equal pay for women "Lily Ledbetter" legislation in the Senate. Further, he favors abstinence-only as opposed to comprehensive sex education, and he has failed to oppose Bush appointees to women's health positions who opposed ready access to contraceptives. One appointee paid his wife to allow him to sodomize her (check it out!). And, just a bit off the subject, don't forget that John McCain graduated fifth from the bottom of his class (894th of 899) at the Naval Academy. Only ignorance could cause a woman to vote for John McCain.

The party fo family values indeed.

How can he be loyal to the country when he couldn't be loyal to his wife, the adultering monster.

John McCain, have you no shame?

Easy now. I fail to see how loyalty to a country equates with marriage. There are plenty of good reasons to attack McCain as unfit for the Presidency, but I think we should all tread carefully here, especially since we (mostly) seemed to be of the opinion that the GOP should get off Clinton's back over his Lewinsky affair.

Family values is something McCain will never be able to speak to, so let's just leave it at that and store this weakpoint for a later date.

How does loyalty to country equate with MORALS? More than likely it leads to FASCISM.

Family is the BEDROCK of every civilization and you better not forget it. What you are hoping is that people will chose ONE form of morality over another. But loyalty to country is nowhere in the GOOD BOOK as a virtue, what is in it is:

Truthfullness
Love of God
Love of Fellow man
Faithfullness
Lack of Greed
Lack of Envy

Please do not mistake patriotism with MORALITY. There are many patriots who will gleefully murder someone else in the name of patriotism - only the truly moral man will be able to resist the temptation.

Interesting how timely this is because a friend of mine today read that McCain is not playing nice overtures towards the Billy Graham family-- he is not seeking them out for support (this from a reliable top religious blog site) -- They- the Graham dynasty of religious imprimaturs seem to be going Obama-- thank you Billy!!! this will hopefully send a signal to the rest of all the evangelists to follow suit!! Talk about a 50 State victory-- this will be a 10 Commandments victory-- (obviously his family values went missing when he divorced Carol and re-married one month after a divorce that seems like the cruelest one on record)-- at least Reagan was dumped by Jane and poor dear was the victim of Jane and not the other way around--- Bravo evangelists-- your are living the faith you preach if you go Obama- and not just paying lip service... so now McCain-- according to this religious website by a Gary S. is courting the Greek Orthodox with an audience with their equivalent of a Pope, on June 10th in N.Y. -- what a small block of voters that will turn into---what do these people hope to gain as far as their image?

The Republican Party - party of family values - has a new standard-bearer, who is willing to throw the mother of his children under the bus for a piece of arm candy.

It gets worse: he even went so far as to call his new (stepford) wife - with reporters present - a trollop and c.unt.

Part 1

I hope that voters who supported H.i.l.l.a.r.y C.l.i.n.t.o.n, and may be considering voting for J.o.h.n G. W. Mc.Bu$h as an 'anti-O.b.a.m.a' vote, will step back for a moment and truly consider what a vote for J.o.h.n G. W. Mc.Bu$h actually means.

I have a great deal of empathy with each and every one of you; I, myself, am a 55 year old white female. However, everything I have read about J.o.h.n G. W. Mc.Bu$h screams out 'NO' to me.

This article is the icing on the cake. It is appalling anyone could treat another human being in this fashion, let alone a wife who was so caring as to insist he not be told of her injuries, out of concern for HIM. His abhorrent behavior flies in the face of everything that is decent and moral.

Forget about Iraq for a moment.
Forget about the economy for a moment.
Forget about Roe v. Wade for a moment.
Forget about his votes for wire tapping, torture, no tax increase - all flip flops.
Forget about his refusal to sign GI Bill.
Forget about Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran for a moment.
Forget about him calling his wife a c*&t
Forget about the horrid joke about Chelsea Clinton

but DO think about how he treated Carol McC.a.i.n.

And add to that his failure to provide the State of Arizona with any benefits during his long tenure as a senator. The man brags about not securing earmark funds for Arizona as some weird badge of honor. However, there are many, many legitimate earmark projects that have been funded in other states. Arizona got nothing. We could have used earmark funds to study skin cancer (think melanoma my friend). We could have used earmark funds to study and harness solar power. We could have used earmark funds to rehabilitate the river bed through the Grand Canyon which is impacted by the dam that keeps back the needed silt to maintain the ecosystem. And don't even get me started on the huge Mexican illegal immigration problem here in Arizona. Any other illegal discovered in this Country who is from another country other than Mexico gets deported post haste, but not Mexican illegals who strain our schools, hospitals and social system. I want the Mexican immigrants to come one and all -- legally. I love my Mexican neighbors, but I hate paying for their propensity to use the E.R. as a family doctor's office. I hate classrooms bulging with over 40 students, many of whom do not speak a word of English. We are a Country of immigrants who welcomes legal immigrants, but McNut has not done one thing to change our flood of illegal immigrants from Mexico. Obama '08 & Yes WE Can!!!

Part 2

Each one of the above reasons stand on their own merits, to unequivocably say 'NO' to John McCain.

But what is the most appalling, the most gut wrenching, is knowing how little empathy, how little character this man has. He HAS no moral character. He is, quite simply, an opportunist.

To nominate him as the next President is unthinkable. He's worse than Bush.
