The Huffington Post:

Laura Bush also defended Sen. Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, for a controversial remark on the campaign trail in February.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback," Michelle Obama said in a speech in Milwaukee.

"I think she probably meant I'm 'more proud,' you know, is what she really meant," Bush told ABC News. "You have to be very careful in what you say. I mean, I know that, and that's one of the things you learn and that's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president and for being the spouse of the president, and that is, everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued."

I have to question her motives.

This does shove Michelle's comments into the news cycle again.

C'mon ....It was pure & it was a clear sign of understanding & solidarity with another woman who will soon occupy the WH - there's no "angle" - that's not her style.

She's also talking about Micheele as if she's the presumbtive First Lady which in of itself is interesting.

Personally, I believe Laura Bush to be well meaning and kind. Obviously, no one with half a mind would say the same about her husband, but she is not him and I doubt she had any kind of decision making role in the WH.

Thanks Mrs. Laura Bush for this defense of Michelle. I rarely praise Mrs. Bush for anything so this is clearly important to me and other who make up Team Obama.

Of course what Michelle said is being mis-represented in order to make a negative addition to the campaign

Republicans are realy afraid of Michelle Obama's ability to talk straight to the American people and inspire in her own right. This is why there are so many stories whose sole goal is to turn her into a political liability

I'm just waiting for the day the that the GOP grows up, honestly my kids are more mature than they are. How America let Republicans be President for so many years is baffling really baffling, it's like America has been stuck in a time capsule.

Thank goodness change is coming soon and it will not definetly be coming from the GOP and McCain.

Hey GOP how bout dropping those lobbyist and Pac's like Obam had the DNC do, step up to the plate put ya money where your mouth is, come John it's your party now, run your party.

Truthfighter1, is revko's comment an example of the "maturity" you claim that the dems and libs have?

Are you an example of the maturity of the young Republicans ?????

Gee; this race is going to be easier to win than even I had suspected !!!

Don't diss the current First Lady. She has more class in her little finger than Dub'ya, Dick and Lynne Cheney have in their entire bodies.

AND I wish the Press and MSM (and even hear at HuffPo) would QUIT repeating the lying edited version of what Michelle Obama said. She said, "For the first time in my adult life I am REALLY proud of my country."

I spent 20+ years in the U.S. Army and I still am not REALLY proud of my country. As a matter of fact after some of the things I've seen and been made to do during those years, I have to say, I am a little ashamed of my country. But that doesn't mean I don't have hope for a better tomorrow.

Thank you Mrs. Laura Bush for speaking up for Michelle Obama, at least there is one Bush left in the world that has some brains left! Oh I forgot your daughter Jenna said she wasn't going to vote for McCain, so make that 2.

This woman is an enabler....and apparently clueless about the damage she and her husband have done to millions of lives.

Why won't anyone report on what Michelle said correctly? What she said was: "For the first time in my adult life, I am REALLY proud of my country..." REALLY proud.

Their daughter "J" is for "O" and I think "L" understands more than what a lot of people give her credit for...anyone see them on Jay Leno, "L" seem to be uncomfortable and "J" was doing most of the talking, and was probably hoping politics didn't come up... they were on promoting their new children's book.

Right, so automatically, Republicans are liars. That's rich. So Democrats are different? I seem to recall Bill Clinton lying on TV.

Michelle Obamas actual words were, "For the first time in my adult life, I am 'REALLY' proud of my country. Implying MORE now then before. I think people chose to forget and important qualifier in what she said.

George W. Bushes legacy.......Laura Bush.

what low-life, scumbags the republican party are -- it's really rediculous. if our media and countrymen had any realy virtue they'd say respond with the simple, obvious fact: "are you guys so frightened and chicken shit that your policies are so corrupt and criminal that you have to slice and dice a ladies prideful indignation?"

Nice comments, Laura. Too bad your overall credibility is none with the murderous man of a husband you've stood by. Your comments may make some 'feel better' about Michelle Obama, but I already know she's a great person, and will be a much better first lady, because she'll always let her hubby know what she thinks. When people talk about lack of substance, Laura fits it to a T.

Laura Bush is not her husband, so get off her case! She is a fine First Lady, and you alll know it. She is kind, gentle and careing to all she comes in contact with. She has stayed out of the mostly political aspect of her husbands life. She has no alterative motive for respecting and stepping up to get after the press for their demorizeing of Micheal Obama! She knows this was a nervouse error from Mrs. Obama, she's been in the public eye for years, and she knows Mrs. obama doesn't have as much experience at this, as she does. The press just enjoys listening for misteps or a missed word in a sentence so it doesn't come out right or what you meant to say! That's all that happened with Mrs. Obama. But she had the courage in the face of being made fun of and put down and called all kind of names--------To brush it off, hold her head up high, and go on, because she knew what she meant and she wasn't going to let any one say she didn't love her country more than most anything in the world outside her family. So media, take it an shove it. Mrs. Bush your a graciouse wonderful lady, and thank you for the common sense words and kindness.

Good post, jupitor....You seem to pretty much post along the lines of "say what you mean; and mean what you say"...and I respect that!! I don't always have to agree with you, but I respect you for how you generally say it.

That said; you make some good points about what Mrs. Bush is saying in regards to Mrs. Obama's widely distorted remark.

There is way too much "hate" going on...The Republican Party is the one we, as Democrats, need to beat to regain the WH. This other stuff, like "olivia" posted below, that "she helped sell the war" is really uncalled for. Sorry, olivia; can't side with you on that remark !!!

Gotta stop hating people for having a different point of view; or doing or saying something we don't agree with. We can disagree; but this IS America !!

She just neutralized one of the biggest and most vicious attacks against Obamas.

Thanks to her. God Bless!
