Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, whose scathing memoir about his time in the Bush administration sent waves through Washington D.C., has agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, a senior committee official told The Huffington Post.

[Update: Watch McClellan discuss his upcoming testimony on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Video below.]

McClellan's book "What Happened" detailed the "propaganda campaign" that led up to the Iraq war. His hearing is expected to focus heavily on the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame, an episode that McClellan has said was driven by political motivations from within the Oval Office. But the committee could press the former press secretary on other matters within its jurisdiction, including the possible authorization of torture by administration officials (though it remains to be seen how much knowledge McClellan has of that topic).

Earlier on Monday, Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers sent an letter to McClellan requesting his testimony.

"I have extended an invitation...after discussions between Committee staff and his attorneys," wrote Conyers. "In his book, Mr. McClellan suggests that senior White House officials may have obstructed justice and engaged in a cover-up regarding the Valerie Plame leak. This alleged activity could well extend beyond the scope of the offenses for which Scooter Libby has been convicted and deserves further attention."

The date on the invitation, June 20, was set in advance to accommodate McClellan's schedule, the official said.

McClellan will be the highest-ranking Bush administration official to be pressed by Congress on the Plame affair. Former Bush strategist Karl Rove has refused to testify, citing executive privilege.

And as such, the testimony could be extremely revealing. According to McClellan, the decision to leak Plame's covert identity emanated from the very top of the Bush White House. The move, he wrote, was politically motivated, as officials were peeved at the critical statements about Iraq coming from Plame's husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson. While McClellan said that the president was ultimately misled by his advisers on the matter, he asserted that the episode itself was a stain on the Oval Office - one that led to his disillusionment.

"It's...clear to me that Scooter Libby was guilty of the perjury and obstruction crimes for which he was convicted," McClellan wrote. "When the president commuted Libby's prison sentence and thereby protected him from serving even one day behind bars, I was disappointed. This kind of special treatment undermines our system of justice."

This is what George gets for calling him Scotty Potty all these years!,

Oh yes, and there was that lying to America and the world to have the nation start an unnecessary war that killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people.... thing!

Go Scotty Potty, and blow your whistle.

"Impeachment is off the table."

Right up there with "I believe this is peace for our time."

Words that will live in infamy.

There is no chance that this Senate votes to convict.

But that is not to say that we could not have some very cool hearings!

That's the real problem isn't it? Impeachment ties up the government for months and then if you don't get a conviction it's just been a counterproductive waste of time. Was Clinton's impeachment a net gain or loss for the Republicans?

Were there votes to impeach Nixon? I have been led to believe there were. Was that such a different time? Was it so much less partisan then? Would people then have voted for the health of the union rather than the survival of the party? Would they today? I think they would not.

Nothing wrong with outing CIA agents if you have a score to settle with them.
At least, not if the President does it. He or she is above the law, unless the opposing party has control of the House and a two-thirds majority of the Senate..
Since Bush is thus above the law, i would rather Congress stopped wasting our time, and voluntarily dissolved until he leaves office. These hearings only add to public discontent, and cause citizens to lose all faith in Government.

The British Parliament is "dissolved."

Nothing in the U.S. Constitution about dissolving Congress.

absolutely 100% disagree.

Watergate hearings were a great thing for this country. A true education and consciousness raising, and a purge of a lot of yucch that needed to go.

We are due for another round, or maybe way overdue.

Well put, Syllepsis. The "leadership" of this congress all took oaths to defend the US Constitution, but put the desires of K St. lobbyists, the corporate media, and big donors ahead of their solemn oaths. You know, standing up to Bush back in 2002, when he had that 85% approval rating behind his back (and the Anthrax attacks on _Democrats Only_ senators scared the bee-jeebers of of the Democratic 'leadership') was one thing...
But this is 2008, and the _only _ ratings lower than Bush and Cheney's gutter approval ratings are those of.... congress itself!

It is simply amazing how thoroughly corrupted, lacking in conviction and determination, and impotent the House and Senate "leadership" have become, especially given the four years of ignomy and disgrace Democrats had to endure when Repubs ruled the roost.

We are finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. As the B ush machine starts to fall apart, what fun to sit and think about all the smart and competent people that an Obama administration would bring into its fold. What a refreshing break from dealing with squirrely, smarmy, self-righteous snobs from the last 8 years. It's exciting to try and figure out who Obama would pick for all the different Cabinet positions. Now all we have left to do is the little matter of brushing M Cain aside. That shouldn't too much of a problem. Government has become interesting again!!

Fellow huffpost bloggers, we need to embrace someone like mclellan, yes embrace! it's much too important for us as americans to recognize the courageous among us who are helping level the corrupt political field. Ultimately, that's what mclellan is doing, regardless of how much profit he stands to make from his book. His energy is pouring into the proper direction, and I would like to believe we (huffposters) are the kind of community that welcomes, and embraces courage in all its colors. I only wanted to post this after seeing much jubilation at "them duking it out" while mclellan to me is a courageous man who needs support to get us to where we need to go. And yes, it's a noble act no matter how much I hated him and hate tony snow and the rest. If we make it easy and not mock them too much, we will get the right (no pun) energy flowing from people, rather than crucify at the next turn and spook the next official that contemplates blowing the whistle and help us all as a society. And yes, this will go for a next Clinton Empress (had she won the primaries) or a McCain or whoever it might be... I see the huffpost community (my community) as one that welcomes turns towards true leadership, like the turn Mclellan is making, and he needs our support.

Compared to Pelosi, mclellan's acts are 100 times more in line w/ america's priorities.

Peace.

Is she even AWARE that her minions are firebombing some perfectly good comments?

Believe it or not, it took me forever to post this because, ironically, I couldn't figure out what word(s) kept blacklisting it.

Through process of elimination I finally discovered that the name "J0hn" is blacklisted.

So remember, you don't go to the j0hn here, you go to the Andy Gump.

I wonder.. would it behoove Olbermann to discuss with Dennis Kucinich one what he had to say tonight on CSpan while Olbermann was discussing all this with McClellan?

About the only time I watch any real news with some substance anymore is watching Olbermann and Bill Moyer's Journal, oh and CSpan... and on the humor side of it all with Jon Stewart.

How sad it's become where our Mass Media has been bought up and "controlled" so much that it is now down to only a couple channels that we have in the 150+ selection we buy on satellite each month.

At least there is still the internet... but I see the power control trying to squeeze in on that as well.

Dennis Kucinich was really great tonight in the bit I was able to watch on Cspan. But I doubt we'll hear / read any headlines on this tomorrow... sadly it will all just fade away as we get other stupid headlines like some drunk celebrity getting pulled over and going "OMG did you see the Mug shot?"

Some of you are clearly helpless. And no, don't correct me, I know that what you really meant with your whiny post is "why isn't it the LEAD story". If it's what you want to comment on, you should go there.

Well, if you already KNOW that everyone who's aware of this story is going to say that it SHOULD be the lead story, then obviously there's some merit to that idea... no?

Oh, and Pixie: I will whine until my weenie falls off, thank you, until the mainstream media blackout of the truly important stuff in this red, white and blue dung heap ENDS.
