Maria Barack

In the latest issue of Avenue magazine — a "glossy, lifestyle magazine that chronicles the lives of Manhattan's affluent and socially powerful" — Maria Bartiromo warns the New York elite that a vote for Barack Obama is a vote for higher taxes (via Page Six):

He's going to take the capital gains tax at 15 percent right now all the way up to 25 to 28 percent," the "Money Honey" tells Avenue. "Sell anything, like a home or stocks, and make a profit . . . [almost] 30 percent of the profit will go to the government instead of 15." The income tax is also in for a bump. Bartiromo says, "Right now [it] is 35 percent, Obama wants to take that to 39 percent . . . We're talking about people who make over $200,000. That's not rich. So it's actually going to impact more people than you may think."

I'm not an expert in this area, but strictly referring to her quote- she mentions raising taxes by 4% of people making over 200K a year. I don't consider that unreasonable, but then again I earn MUCH, MUCH LESS than that per year like many other Americans do.

Also regarding the capital gains tax on real estate- I believe that gains tax is only charged if you claim a clean profit on the property- IF you were to use the sale of one property to purchase another property this issue does NOT affect you. So you can sell one home if you plan to purchase and move into another. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Finally- it would be logical to raise taxes, particularly to the wealthy to help offset the last 8 years of damage. Don't be fooled, the increases on the taxes will be an investment to America's future. Economics 101 teaches that the wealth of nation resides in a strong middle class. Tbe Bush years basically destroyed this group. We need to restore and replenish this group.

She needs to get out of NY, and see the rest of the country. 95% make less than 75,000 a year and 75% of that make less than 50,000.

Thank goodness there are more of us making less than $200K who understand how well off someone is who makes that kind of income especially outside of places like New York City, Palo Alto and Wash DC. Should I feel sorry for the top 1% of the country that has been getting wealthier every year for the past 40 years while the rest of us have lost major ground and pay a greater percentage of our meager income on taxes than they do? I think not. It's time to support the middle class in this country.

aver sal in us $44000
I have always like her but these comments make me feel like a fool for thinking she is about the everyday investor. $200000. is 4.5 x the aver American salary. Shame money honey on you.

Ms. Bartiromo should trade places with any one of the millions of young woman living in any one of the countless refugee camps pitched in ditch, at least long enough for her to have her "moon cycle", and then ask whether or not she thinks 200K Is a lot of money.

$200k isn't rich in a Chris Rock "if Bill Gates woke up with Oprah's money, he'd kill himself" sort of way.

Consider the audience. This publication is targeted at affluent readers living in Manhattan. It's not possible to live "comfortably" in certain parts of Manhattan on $200,000. On the Upper East Side or Upper West Side of Manhattan $200,000 is not considered "rich." Ditto for Beverly Hills, Palm Beach and a few other upscale areas.

For everyone else, $200,000 sounds pretty good. She's not talking to or about "everyone else."

The target audience for that publication is shrinking by the day.

That's not rich? That's FAR more then what more then 75% of Americans earn.

I'm sure Maria and her 200K+ friends are really struggling to pay for their iceberg lettuce.....

Yeah, 200K is multiple times what my wife and I, with three college degress including a masters between us, make at our "professional, white collar" jobs. I can't even imagine what a COMBINED household income of 200K would be like. We'd be out of debt in half a year, have our home payed off in a few more, and be able to actually retire someday. Right now, we have no expectation of ever retiring. We'll be working until we leave this earthly plane.

I wish I wasn't rich like those poor 200K earning bastards. That'd be great.

I'm sure Maria buys the kinds of lettuce with names you can't pronounce.

40 K? If one earned 40k when Clinton was president and you filed single, you had payed 25% in federal taxes. After GWB's tax cuts of 2001, you now PAY 15%! Which amount do U prefer LIBERAL1976? 28% out your pocket or 15%? PUT YOUR $ WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS

"We're talking about people who make over $200,000. That's not rich." -- The median U.S. household income is about $48,000. How imbalanced is our distribution of wealth that making more than four times the national median is not rich? If my wife and I were making double the national median, we'd be doing pretty well (though we'd be right around the median in our county). If we doubled that again, I'd be Mr. Moneybags.

When your salary is in the millions, then $200,000 a year seems like chump change to them. There is a huge gap in management and worker salaries. Compensating workers for an honest days work does not exist in this nation. Why? Because we have no strong workers unions in this nation. Look at the disparity between an average worker and a CEO. Is it really fair to be paying a CEO 40 to 50 times more than what the average worker is making?

Yeah, 200,000 isn't RICH, but it certainly puts you in the upper-ring of society.

a new home in Cali sells for 800K for 2000 SF. Lets say you are intelligent and really make 1/3 of the price, you are north of a 200K salary. R u rich in that home?

You make up numbers to justify your love of greed. A home in Cali also sells for $300,000 and $10 million.

And yes, idjit, you are rich if you make $200k and have an $800k home because if you're too busy spending your money on Hummers and HDTVs with that income, you can always sell that house and buy one around the median price in Cali which was $403,870 in April 2008.

But who would expect someone with such a lame argument to know the facts anyway?

All she is worried about his her paycheck! For people who don't make $20,000, $200K is rich!
