She e-mailed him after some of the Democratic debates, offering her thoughts on his messages and performance. "After the silliness of the last ABC debate," she says of the highly criticized event co-hosted by Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, she wrote to congratulate him on "holding his ground."

His replies have been thoughtful, she says, more than a brief line or two; on the ABC debate, he responded that the questioning was "difficult" and he was being pounded on "one silly question after another."

Johansson is somewhat shocked that he keeps up their back-and-forth correspondence. "You'd imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly traveling and constantly 'on' -- how can he return these personal e-mails?" she asks. "But he does, and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them. Nobody sees it, nobody talks about it, but it's incredible." She adds, "I feel like I'm supporting someone, and having a personal dialogue with them, and it's amazing."

Wow. I totally, totally disagree with most of the posters here (sort of unusual for me). When I read this article I thought something like this:

"Oh, I didn't know she supported Obama. I remember Jennifer Aniston gave the max for Obama, too. And I know lots of celebs are supporting him, they usually DO choose to support one candidate. Pretty dumb that celebs get to have that power, but that is the way it is and I fully support their right to do so.

Scarlett seems quite smart and aware for a 23 year old. That is so cool. Oh, Obama emailed her back and thanked her for her support. Then she emailed him back. Then he emailed her and discussed how his "performances" were going (ie debates). Well, she IS a performer and that makes perfect sense.

I think it is SO SO cool that he makes personal contact with his supporters. And it sounds like Scarlett has done a lot for him. Sounds totally above board to me!"

Those were my initial thoughts, now here is what I think about people saying "oooh, be careful Barack, she's a blond and what will Michelle think.... etc...." I think that line of thinking is totally unfair to Obama and Johansen. Just because she is blond and beautiful he can't email her? Now that IS sexist!!!!

I think that Obama is sooooooo secure in his marraige that he doesn"t even think twice when he communicates with other beautiful women!

Read the whole article. She's one of his most prominent supporters. She's organized fund raisers for him and appeals to one of his key bases - young people. She's famous, but so what. I'm sure most of his most prominent supporters get personal attention.

Why would you care how a celebrity votes? This is a problem waiting to happen. Why are men so stupid? Despite their power, good hearts, or well meaning intentions they do things that are potentially damaging to those they say they love. I am totally a Barack supporter but the fact that he exchanges emails with this woman makes me wonder about his judgement. It doesn't matter if the GOP is behind this....if Barack engages in this behavior, no matter how innocent it may be... it is dumb to do it. If you have never received a personal email from Barack, Michelle or David Plouffe, then you are NOT a true supporter. You may be a sympatizer, just not a staunch supporter. I have received personal e-mails from these three people and responded, and then getting replies back. I am no Scarlett. Everything depends on your level of support, the content of your email and how you keep up with daily campaigning. I may be wrong to suggest that you are not a true support and I apologize if I am wrong. If you truly are, then I can bet that you also have some times during the campaign received an email from him that you thought was sent by a staff and did not pay attention to it.
Aside from that, any major fundraiser has Barack's direct contact info. Scarlett being one and ice on the cake, a grassroot supporter and leading organizing effort to support the candidate, it is not surprising that she frequently communicates with him. By emailing the candidate after a debate, shows that she keeps up with the candidate message, that she supports the candidate's agenda and that just because he did not perform well in a particular teevee debate wouldn't be enough to sway her support away. Get involved, pay attention and get personal with Barack and I bet my bottom $ that you will get your own Scarlett-like moment.
