Al Gore

The always colorful former Clinton aide James Carville said on CNN today that he thinks Barack Obama should choose former vice president Al Gore as his VP. He argued that Gore would be the right candidate for combating the biggest problem facing the nation: oil consumption.

If Gore has risen above Politics (which I somewhat agree with), then lets leave him there.

Besides:

1. He's already been VP why would he want to spent the next near-decade doing it again?
2. If his life's work is about climate change, being VP would be a giant distraction, and we need him to focus on that very important task.
3. THE 90s ARE OVER!!! Quit trying to take us back there. There are plenty NEW leaders who can rise to this opportunity.

This desire to try to hold on to all things Clinton (including his former VP), is just an attempt for Carville and others to stay relevant, while the rest of the Party has moved on. Hey Jimmy, feel free to join us in the "here and now", thanks!

Oh the hell YEAH!!!!

But Gore won't. Gore has said he will not work in another administration. He will gladly work with obama to improve the environment, but Gore is enjoying being a figure on the world stage where as VP is basicaly just a warm body sitting where it safe in case of an emergency

Listen up James: Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country!
So, I will expect that you will, tonight, write the check that you said you would write .... if
Barack Obama is the nominee.
After that - I think your two cents needs to be shelved for a bit of time. Cough it up Jimmy!!!
I'm going to make sure that you follow through on your word.

I like Al Gore. I respect Al Gore.

But I hope Obama doesn't pick him as VP running-mate, because a) he's got "baggage," and b) his speaking style induces sleep.

I'm a little sorry that Obama has apparently ruled-out Edwards, who I think would have helped with some segments of the populace, but it's Obama's choice.

Edwards has made it known that he doesn't want the VP slot.

Moot discussion since Gore doesn't want the job.

Go away Carville

You gotta love that Carville ! ! He knows Gore wouldn't come
within eight zillion miles of accepting that V.P. nomination!
The man has done that. Been there and with a far better President.

Mr. Gore has the world by the tail. No way would he get involved
in this election. UNLESS for some reason the convention became
deadlocked, THEN AND ONLY THEN might he consider taking
the PRESENDENTIAL nomination.

I'm not gonna knock Gore. Carville isn't someone with sense anyway.

Indeed Gore has a lot of options and if he didn't want the presidency, I seriously doubt he'd be interested in VP--again.

As for Clinton...you're entitled to an opinion but his legion of admirers in my opinion, overrate him. Compared to Bush he's Abe Lincoln but that's as far as I'll go with my accolades. He personally did more to legitimize Reagan's policies than Reagan and if you can't see this you may well be blinded admiration. Granted, Clinton had real accomplishments especially with respect to the deficit but please recall that he won the 1992 election quite possibly because Bush 41 raised taxes, which made balancing the budget possible. Personally, I find Clintonism and the DLC repugnant and his embrace of so called welfare reform, the death penalty, and other conservative/pro-business issues just a repugnant. Clinton's support for globalization will I believe come to viewed as misguided as the globalization business model can only be sustained with cheap fuel. If the price for oil isn't significant reduced I suspect the system will collapse. I agree that Clinton might have accomplished more had he not been the target of irrational conservative hated but that can't explain his support for so many policies that should be anathema to the true progressive.

We don't gotta love James Carville - he is an arrogant cynical talking-head who seems to think that he remains relevant in a post-Clinton era; he's not.

Carville, with his faux Louisiana drawl is ENEMY. He's the leader of all DINOs - the Bush-league dems. To even have his ugly mug on this heretofore reputable site, serves only to diminish and defile the serious body of work for which HuffPo is renowned. Please, editors, no more of this moron, he's hard on the eyes. Thanks.

Carville is playing some kind of subversive anti-Obama game. I don't think Gore would be a good choice for a number of reasons. Most notably, that would totally antagonize the Clinton faction of the party, which is probably what Carville is trying to accomplish. After watching "Recount" I have a very different opinion of Gore's fitness to be president. I realize now that he was just another part of the problem in that election debacle. Gore gave up instead of seeing it through to the end. He began a whole domino effect of Democratic capitulation under Republican chicanery. As much as I abhor Bush and his legacy I must admit to his tenacity to win. And as much as I admire Gore I am devastated that he threw in the towel prematurely. That's not a good indication of a presidential candidate.

I am surprised by the really negative reaction here..whatever you think of Carville, he is very close to the Clintons and if he is saying this I think it means for sure that Hillary is not interested in the VP post or knows she won't get the pick and wants to send the message out there that she is not interested...that allows Obama to make whatever choice he wants without fabricated media pressure. That is good news. A tleast his decision wpnt be from a position of weakness. Carville os doin gthe dems a favor by sayying this. I think Gore has nothing to do with it and has no desire which is why Carville chose him.

Obama doesn't need Carville, or anybody else for that matter, to send up smoke signals or otherwise speak in code to show him the way - please note that Carville's team lost the battle for party lead, which means that they should quit parading around like a band of power brokers, they are not.

If I ever want Carville's advice, I'll ram a hat pin into my ear.

It is indeed a provocative idea. Nobody said Obama had to play by the rules. Gore is one of the few American politicians who has risen above politics, and the vice presidency may be too much of a distraction from his work. But then again, why be cynical? Why not elevate actual great men to high offices rather than mere politicians who are crap shooting at being great men?

Gore would be a stunning choice for VP. AND it would rally dems.

If not I want him in a special cabinet post on Climate Change issues.
