Katherine Heigl Rejects Emmy Possibility, Slams "Grey's" Material

LOS ANGELES — Katherine Heigl won't be chewing her manicure at this year's Emmy ceremony: She says she didn't seek a nomination because "Grey's Anatomy" failed to deliver the goods for an award-worthy performance.

Heigl, who was honored as best supporting actress in a drama last year for the ABC series, declined to put her name in consideration for a bid, a spokeswoman for the actress said Wednesday.

"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization" decided against competing, Heigl said in a written statement provided by her publicist, Melissa Kates, who was contacted by the AP.

"In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials," added Heigl. She plays Dr. Izzie Stevens on "Grey's Anatomy," which slipped in the ratings this past season but remained a top 10 show.

An after-hours message left with a publicist for "Grey's Anatomy" creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes was not immediately returned Wednesday night.

Heigl, who shot to box-office success last summer with the comedy "Knocked Up," has established herself as one of Hollywood's rare voices of candor.

In a Vanity Fair magazine interview published in January, she called the hit film "a little sexist" and said that it painted women as "shrews, as humorless and uptight," while the male characters were lovable and goofy.

Heigl also was outspoken when "Grey's" castmates Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight clashed last year over Washington's alleged use of a homophobic slur.

"I'm going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period," Heigl said at one point of Washington, who ended up being booted from the medical drama.

Nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced July 17. The ceremony is Sept. 21.

I don't disagree with Ms. Heigl's opinion. It's no secret that she hasn't been satisfied with the direction her character has taken these last 2 seasons. She's the only Blond in the show, until recently, and there does seem to be some desire to make all blonds look insane (If they are pretty). I do think that this announcement is an attempt to threaten a brake away from the show if the creator doesn't change the direction of Heigl's character. I hope Shonda and Ms. H do come to some sort of agreement, and if not, the lawyers will be the only ones making a profit out of chaos. What Gonzo said about Hollywood...

I would call her into my office and say, "It appears that you've taken your good fortune for granted, and you have disrespected me and the people who write for you, in the process. So here's what we're going to do. First, you're going to go into the conference room, where all the writers are gathered. And you're going to apologize to them, and beg for your job, since they are currently writing you out of the series. We wouldn't want to burden you with material that's below you. If you can change their mind, you can stay on the show. If not, you can keep Isaiah Washington company in Has Been World. Good luck."

David Caruso thought the same thing. And countless others who thought they could make the jump to big screen and after three bombs he went into the witness program for about eight or ten years. This is a diva move and she's playing w/ fire. Hollywood is more ruthless than Washington when it comes to being black balled.

This is nothing more than a power play to get out of the tv show and on the becoming a movie star. I'll give her one thing: she's got the diva part down 100%.

I watched the first season (only), and I thought they were writing her off in the season finale. I thought, "What a good idea. She is a horrible actor." Now she is rich and famous and in movies and complaining about being rich and famous and being in movies.

I do not understand the antipathy toward Ms. Heigl. She is refreshingly bright, honest, and caring. She refuses to be a stereotype, a bimbo. Too many young people are happy to pursue mindlessness. Her character rose above the trailer park, and looks like she will stay there. In her other roles, she refuses to play the dumb woman. (It might be good for her career to play the kindly dumb woman once in awhile, although she would probably bring lots of sarcasm to the role.) Kudos to her. And yes, she is attractive, in a city full of beautiful woman. If all it took was good looks to be successfull, none of the good actors would have jobs.

I've seen all of her films. She's just not very good. Even much more talented actors and actresses do not complain like this about their less than stellar scripts. I wouldn't mind her words if she could just back it up with talent. She just can't.

Some of us have seen this act of hers before - I knew of her before GA. I'm just shocked that now that she's finally 'made it' - after stepping on who knows how many people, she's now shooting herself in the foot. I think you've pegged her as some sort of feminist? I guess I haven't. She's done quite a few anti-feminist things in her day. I honestly don't think this was about 'candor'. It was some sort of ego power play - to what end I can't say, because I just can't believe she didn't realize how her words would be interpreted. Maybe Knocked Up was a little sexist. This show is written for teeny boppers and it does Suck ! And being a grown up I can't bear to watch it. First season was ok- but really downhill after that. And I miss Burke.

Okay, that should free up a slot for some other actress. Speaking of emmys, Hugh Laurie is long over due and Anne Dudek should get one for guest actor. The last two episodes of House were outstanding. I do like Heigl for being real and not a boring interviewee.

Hugh Laurie is phenomenal. A force of nature. Sometimes it seems as if the best actors and actresses are ignored, although they can get lots of work.
Heigl does a lot with the material she is given. She shows that blondes can be as sharp as a tack.
