LOS ANGELES — Katherine Heigl won't be chewing her manicure at this year's Emmy ceremony: She says she didn't seek a nomination because "Grey's Anatomy" failed to deliver the goods for an award-worthy performance.

Heigl, who was honored as best supporting actress in a drama last year for the ABC series, declined to put her name in consideration for a bid, a spokeswoman for the actress said Wednesday.

"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization" decided against competing, Heigl said in a written statement provided by her publicist, Melissa Kates, who was contacted by the AP.

"In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials," added Heigl. She plays Dr. Izzie Stevens on "Grey's Anatomy," which slipped in the ratings this past season but remained a top 10 show.

An after-hours message left with a publicist for "Grey's Anatomy" creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes was not immediately returned Wednesday night.

Heigl, who shot to box-office success last summer with the comedy "Knocked Up," has established herself as one of Hollywood's rare voices of candor.

In a Vanity Fair magazine interview published in January, she called the hit film "a little sexist" and said that it painted women as "shrews, as humorless and uptight," while the male characters were lovable and goofy.

Heigl also was outspoken when "Grey's" castmates Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight clashed last year over Washington's alleged use of a homophobic slur.

"I'm going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period," Heigl said at one point of Washington, who ended up being booted from the medical drama.

Nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced July 17. The ceremony is Sept. 21.

Grey's Anatomy is such an unbelievably over-rated show. The reason it's rating have dropped is because it's target audience of vapid, single sorority women have graduated from college and found entry-level jobs in the restaurant / hotel / casino industry.

At least those "vapid, single sorority women" know the difference between "its" and "it's."

Whaahhh? Becuz they's cahl-lidge gra-joo-we-itz.

Well anytime an actress (and the same thing goes for an actor) realizes they are either: a) overpaid or b) in material that is not delivering the audience what it deserves I have to applaud it.

Now I would have preferred Heigl admit she was overpayed. But rightfully slamming the writers and the show for not delivering the content it should, is good enough for me. I'll take it. Frankly wish more actress would do it. For me, it shows some level of integrity not usually seen in Hollywood.

she is just SO annoying. talk about biting the hand that feeds you, on both accounts. i didn't like knocked up for the same reason but she starred in the damn thing!! and as for the emmy, as golda meir once said, "don't be so humble, you're not that great!"

She has been trying to ditch Grey's ever since her name has been recognized. She is truly ungrateful. She slammed Knocked Up with these ridiculous claims that it was sexist. Knocked Up is hilarious in all the parts she wasn't in. 27 Dresses is an useless chick flick that came and went as soon as you heard the name of the movie. She has been talking trash about Grey's trying to break out saying she doesn't want to end up like Jennifer Aniston. Oh you won't sweetie. Aniston has talent and isn't ungrateful.

Grey's Anatomy pushed her salary to $300k. Knocked Up got her $6 million. You would think she could be some what grateful for the career she has. And possibly will have. But if Katherine "It's Heigl not Heigel" doesn't shut her big yapper, she won't be any where.

unfortunately, in show business showing gratitude is not always an asset. she's done well for herself and she is a good actress, what else can be reasonably expected of her?

She'll go better if she shuts up.

She sounds like a real pleasure to work with. I'm sure the writers of the show will be really thrilled to read this.

Kudos to Heigl!! Such integrity and guts in speaking and acting on her truth is rare in corporate Hollywood these days.

"rare voice of candor"? Not exactly the term I'd use...

How big must this woman's ego be? First she craps on the movie that gave her the credentials to ask for $7 mill a picture (I agreed with her statements but the self-absorbed egotist should never taken the part if it insulted her artistic and feminist sensibilities), now she craps on the show that made her.

Maybe she wasn't going to get a nomination and she knew it. So, instead of failing, she takes herself out.

Heigl deserves the rest of her movies to flop under the weight of her ego.

Grey's in an ensemble and all I ever hear from Heigl is "me, me, me, me, me, me..."

Money, storylines, me, me, me...

I am liking her less and less everytime she opens her mouth and it has nothing to do with her candor, just how selfish she seems.

I can't stand Katherine Heigl. It seems that she insults the creators and writing staffs involved in every project she takes part in. If she really believes that this material is beneath her or beneath the recognition it receives maybe she should get to writing her own scripts and leave these other projects to other actresses who would be ecstatic to have her roles.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't but it is utterly classless to say that. But, classiness is something that eludes most of the country that gives you Fox News.
