UPDATED BELOW: MSNBC tells The Huffington Post its "suburban women" results fall "within the margin of error."

***

Patience is not typically regarded as a virtue in political reporting. Next to accuracy, being first is king. But sometimes the two goals are in tension, as shown by this week's rush to make sense of Sen. Clinton's exit from the presidential field. Over the last few days, pollsters have been racing to gauge the first reactions among women voters to the all-male general election match-up between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Gallup hit the news cycle first on Wednesday, announcing their discovery of an eight-point swing among women toward the Illinois Senator since Clinton left the stage. Then NBC and the Wall Street Journal came out with joint polling results that were broadly similar, but with a caveat that represented a potentially troublesome hole in Obama's female support.

The NBC-WSJ poll showed that while Obama had increased his lead among women overall (52-33), "suburban women" still favored McCain by six points, 44-38, while a hypothetical Clinton candidacy would beat the Arizona Republican.

Since that poll was released Wednesday, MSNBC has been reporting the "suburban women" finding often, sometimes hour-by-hour -- perhaps because it reinforces residual doubts about Obama's viability in the 'burbs. The question led Chris Matthews' "Hardball" program at 5pm on Wednesday with a graphic that read "Woman Trouble?"

But how solid was the NBC-WSJ poll's conclusion about those voters? With only 1,000 total respondents in the poll, and no guarantee that the sub-group of "suburban women" was balanced nationally -- meaning that these suburban women polled were drawn from a balanced cross section from America's vast suburbia -- a group of polling experts from across the ideological spectrum told The Huffington Post they viewed the findings with some suspicion.

"I am skeptical about results for smaller subgroups like 'suburban white women,'" said Emory University Professor of Political Science Alan Abramowitz. "There is more random 'noise' with smaller subgroups. How many of these 'suburban white women' were there in the NBC poll out of the 1,000 total registered voters? Figure about 750-800 whites, close to 400 white women, so maybe 150-200 suburban white women. A shift of a small number of voters would change the outcome."

Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who you might expect to celebrate the poll, also cast doubt on its findings regarding a preference among suburban women for McCain -- if for no other reason than that any one poll's margin of error increases as the reduced sample size of a "subgroup" becomes smaller and smaller. "If you have a thousand samples, maybe your margin of error for your overall sample is 3.1 percent [the margin cited in the NBC-WSJ poll]." Assuming approximately half of the poll's respondents were women, he said, "your margin of error [when considering them alone] goes up to 4.5 percent. Then take females and segment them among rural, urban and suburban [subgroups]. ... You've doubled your margin of error in that group." [See update below: MSNBC revealed the margin of error tripled for its "suburban women" subgroup.] Fabrizio also said that disrupting the national distribution of a sample by looking at subgroups can throw any analysis out of whack by the same proportion, adding, "there are other vagaries that can go on to influence the sub-sample, too."

Story continues below

Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg agreed with Fabrizio, saying "I'm not sure I believe" the NBC-WSJ numbers on suburban women. She also said it was "bizarre" to single out the suburban women numbers as a statistically significant finding, given the more robust evidence that Obama was competitive with McCain among white women overall. "They missed the big story among women, in my view," she said. "It's not like white women are a 'gimme' for Democrats. Obama is doing significantly better among college-educated white women [than Sen. John Kerry in 2004]."

Republican polling magnate Frank Luntz also predicted the real breakdown among women voters would prove to be age, not location. "Obama will benefit from the usual Democratic advantage among women -- with one caveat," he said. "He is not as likely to win over older women compared to the traditional Democratic presidential candidate. His age, his inexperience and, frankly, his apparent association with people outside the mainstream will definitely frighten older women who would normally support the Democratic nominee. Even the crowds at his rallies raise questions. The aspects of his life and his language that is so appealing to younger women simply does not generate a similar reaction among older women. However, he will win an unusually large share of the younger female vote -- a very potent voting bloc in this election."

In the published 33-page breakdown of the NBC-WSJ poll's results linked to on Pollster.com, the following phrase appears on the front page: "NOTE: The results contained in this document reflect results among the national crossection of voters ONLY." Given that the "suburban women" findings are not included in that document, it appears the Hart and Newhouse polling firms, which conducted the poll for the two media organizations, recognized that its subgroup findings on "suburban women" were not representative enough to include in the breakdown. So far, that hasn't stopped MSNBC from turning those numbers into big news. Emails to NBC's political unit asking for a numeric breakdown of "suburban women" in their poll were not immediately returned.

UPDATE:

MSNBC has now provided The Huffington Post with more information on its "suburban women" finding showing a 44-38 McCain lead over Obama. "This is within the margin of error of 9.34 percent based on a sample size of 110 within the larger poll," an MSNBC source wrote over email. (That's three times the margin of error for the entire poll.) This means McCain's 44 percent figure of support among suburban women could actually be as low as 35 percent, while Obama's 38 percent figure could rise as high as 47 percent -- assuming a 95 percent confidence interval (for the stat wonks in the house). Alternatively, McCain could be leading Obama 53-29. While those distant outcomes are less likely true than NBC-WSJ's 44-38 finding, that broad variance raises questions about the statistical usefulness of this one particular crosstab, as opposed to the rest of the NBC-WSJ poll on the whole.* [Added later]

SECOND UPDATE:

NBC Political Director Chuck Todd defends the use of the "suburban women" crosstab in an email response:

Here's what I can tell you on our crosstabs. We never use one unless we have more than 100 incidents; in this case, the incident rate is approx. 140 interviews. It's always easy to shoot a pollster but the track record of the NBC-WSJ poll is undeniable; campaign operatives on both sides of the aisle believe it's the gold standard for media polls.

Well, I'm only one senior woman, but I am one. I am definitely for Obama, all the way. I live in the suburbs, if that matters, and I am college-educated. My fears that there aren't enough smart people in the US to vote for him are gradually being lessened.

I know that he will have a hard job cleaning up Bush's mess, but I also know that he alone is our best hope to do so. In my recent travels, my Obama t-shirt got a lot of thumbs-up reactions. Time and again, I've been told, "I wish we could Vote for him" by people not lucky enough to live here in this great country.

Finally, we have a candidate for President worthy of the title. Just think, we're going to go from the worst president in our history to the best! Believe it!

Does anyone has Chris Matthew email address?
I been watching him for the last few months and he doesn't like Obama at all. That's why he's been stirring up anything pertaining to Obama running. He always talks about the woman vote Hillary got, the WV, Penn, Ohio, and Ken wins but never talks about Obama wins where he smashed Hillary in that 11 states win. Again, we can post a comment but tomorrow @ 5pm guess what the topic is?

You guess it: Can Obama close the woman margin against McCain

Well if you think Hardball was bad you should have watched Morning Joe, with Andrea Mitchell reporting on these polls. All of the polls where Obama was way ahead were not even mentioned! All she presented were McCain leadind in white men and suburban women. This was then followed up with a BO/HC wiining over JM/MR ticket with her saying for the millionth time that it shows HC would help on the ticket. I have never seen such biased reporting and would never have known about the polls where BO was leading if I hadn't seen them on KO the night before. There was no meaningful analysis at all. Quite a waste of time so now I've turned it off for good.

And there can be 4 other polls showing him ahead in any given catagory but MSNBC, Joe S., Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell et al, will only highlight (more like hit you over the head with) the one poll, or part of a poll (left handed, blue eyed, blond women in suburbia) that cast negativelly on O. We never heard about Hillary's HUGE "problem" winning over AA's, nor Independents, the young, the educated; or now, McCain's problem with just about everyone, including Hispanics. (O's hammering him.) Just watch. This morning, Morning Joke, I give him 5 minutes before he starts discussing, "Obama's problem with..." Say it long enough and it becomes truth...they're hoping for a self fulfilling prophecy. Pathetic.

Sandtats you are so right! This has always ticked me off how Clinton and McCain are made to seem like perfect candidates. Especially with Clinton. The MSM continued to help her make her case that Obama was not electable in November. Constantly highlighting his "problems" and never Clintons.

This is why I always believed that she couldn't win the general. The MSM and her campaign went into the primaries believing they had it in the bag, didn't put forth a winning strategy and lost. If she had gotten the nomination - she would have went into the GE with the same attitude and lose that too.

Just my opinion!

Glad you point this out. A few nights ago, TweetyBird quoted parts of the poll on Hardball and cited the only parts of the poll that showed Obama having a problem with particular groups (older white suburban women and white men in Appalachia). Later on Countdown, Olbermann quoted the rest of the poll showing Obama leading in ALL other groups against McCain. It seems to me that NBC and GE really, really wanted McCain or Clinton, since both are corporatists and lobbyist friendly.. Various NBC pundits have pushed the "dream ticket" of Obama/Clinton with unmerciful vigor because it would put a corporate-friendly candidate on the ticket (and drive a stake in the heart of the campaign of hope for the working family).

I find it laughable when these reporters think they are being "professional and unbiased" in their reporting of the political race. Andrea Mitchell was always in the can for HRC and it showed through with the way she would over emphasize HRC's strengths vs. Obama's. She always appered to be aversed from wanting to detail any negatives about HRC's (sniper fire for example) campaign. Of course one has to remember that her husband, Alan Greenspan, was head of the Federal Reserve during the Clinton years.

I find it very dismaying to watch the MSM continue to give John McCain a pass on every gaffe, contradiction, and dubious campaign lobbyist on his staff. Obama has consistently been held to a higher set of standards by the MSM than John McCain.

Suburban white woman for Obama and has been from the beginning.

The whole idea of reporting the fragmented voting numbers is a subtle form of racism. It constantly reminds people of the differences between people rather than what we share in common. The only number that matters is the total, and that is the number that should be reported.

I say ignore ALL the polls. When the number of new voters in 50 states cast their vote in November, coupled with cross-over voters and independents, I predict that the numbers will more than off-set the
"Suburban Women" who do not go the polls or do not vote for Obama!

By the way, now that Murdoch owns the WSJ, and it is leaning even further right every day, how can anybody trust the interity of the polls they do? Do you really believe he isn't trying to influence both the writings in the WSJ and the polls?

Or, is everybody just an idiot, and assumes the truthfulness of a Murdoch publication? C'mon, wake up.

I guess that explains Obama's 38% of women and 55% of male suburban voters.Of course none of the black voters fall into any such categories.

No, Chris is wrong - again! I have now stopped watching his show because he makes so many mistakes of fact it is ridiculous! At least once, and often more times, every show he makes a statement of fact that is wrong, he talks over his guests answers (because what he has to say is more important), he disses many of the women on the show, he is frequently pejorative, and often verges on the edges of misgony.

What can you expect of a Catholic from the Philadelphia area.

To add to the fodder, the Dan Abrams show sucks even worse. The only one I watch now is Keith.

Look at Chris on The Daily Show, and many others he has been on. He comes across as the nerd's nerd, and he really believes he has the answers, but he doesn't even have the questions.

Somebody in authority should look at the last two weeks of shows and see . . . . .

Enough said .

I'm originally from Northern NJ, born in NYC, currently in exile just outside of Scranton which is btw, only about an 1 1/2 from NYC. CM has made me come to LOATHE this state, this town, this area. His schilling for that slimey, old time machine politician Rendell; PA as the paradigm for all that is "true" and good and worthy in America, the "blue collar, lunch buckert, hard working WHITE Americans, the REAL America," was beyond the pale. He's a dinosaur whose time has come and gone.

Not that this election isn't important, but it's sure a sad day in American when there is talk of "impeachment" in the Senate, but what makes news is "why Obma isn't appealing to white women." I'll never understand why just the discussion of impeachment isn't front page. Our media STILL sucks.

Sorry, had to rant...back to the polls. Obama is STILL ahead in the polls in the general election and in some states, but does the media mention that? NOOOOOOOO!

Even when I agree with a point he makes he makes me feel sleazy about it - earlier in the campaign before all the madness O.bama & C.linton supporters on this site used to affectionatly refer to him as the B@stard. In my opinion we still should. HuffPo seems to have been invaded by a gang of bullies (claiming to be O.bama supporters) who shout down decent - I'm an O,bama supporter but had to take a few months off - they drive me crazy bunch of blowhards.
