Women Trouble

UPDATED BELOW: MSNBC tells The Huffington Post its "suburban women" results fall "within the margin of error."

***

Patience is not typically regarded as a virtue in political reporting. Next to accuracy, being first is king. But sometimes the two goals are in tension, as shown by this week's rush to make sense of Sen. Clinton's exit from the presidential field. Over the last few days, pollsters have been racing to gauge the first reactions among women voters to the all-male general election match-up between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Gallup hit the news cycle first on Wednesday, announcing their discovery of an eight-point swing among women toward the Illinois Senator since Clinton left the stage. Then NBC and the Wall Street Journal came out with joint polling results that were broadly similar, but with a caveat that represented a potentially troublesome hole in Obama's female support.

The NBC-WSJ poll showed that while Obama had increased his lead among women overall (52-33), "suburban women" still favored McCain by six points, 44-38, while a hypothetical Clinton candidacy would beat the Arizona Republican.

Since that poll was released Wednesday, MSNBC has been reporting the "suburban women" finding often, sometimes hour-by-hour -- perhaps because it reinforces residual doubts about Obama's viability in the 'burbs. The question led Chris Matthews' "Hardball" program at 5pm on Wednesday with a graphic that read "Woman Trouble?"

But how solid was the NBC-WSJ poll's conclusion about those voters? With only 1,000 total respondents in the poll, and no guarantee that the sub-group of "suburban women" was balanced nationally -- meaning that these suburban women polled were drawn from a balanced cross section from America's vast suburbia -- a group of polling experts from across the ideological spectrum told The Huffington Post they viewed the findings with some suspicion.

"I am skeptical about results for smaller subgroups like 'suburban white women,'" said Emory University Professor of Political Science Alan Abramowitz. "There is more random 'noise' with smaller subgroups. How many of these 'suburban white women' were there in the NBC poll out of the 1,000 total registered voters? Figure about 750-800 whites, close to 400 white women, so maybe 150-200 suburban white women. A shift of a small number of voters would change the outcome."

Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who you might expect to celebrate the poll, also cast doubt on its findings regarding a preference among suburban women for McCain -- if for no other reason than that any one poll's margin of error increases as the reduced sample size of a "subgroup" becomes smaller and smaller. "If you have a thousand samples, maybe your margin of error for your overall sample is 3.1 percent [the margin cited in the NBC-WSJ poll]." Assuming approximately half of the poll's respondents were women, he said, "your margin of error [when considering them alone] goes up to 4.5 percent. Then take females and segment them among rural, urban and suburban [subgroups]. ... You've doubled your margin of error in that group." [See update below: MSNBC revealed the margin of error tripled for its "suburban women" subgroup.] Fabrizio also said that disrupting the national distribution of a sample by looking at subgroups can throw any analysis out of whack by the same proportion, adding, "there are other vagaries that can go on to influence the sub-sample, too."

Story continues below
advertisement

Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg agreed with Fabrizio, saying "I'm not sure I believe" the NBC-WSJ numbers on suburban women. She also said it was "bizarre" to single out the suburban women numbers as a statistically significant finding, given the more robust evidence that Obama was competitive with McCain among white women overall. "They missed the big story among women, in my view," she said. "It's not like white women are a 'gimme' for Democrats. Obama is doing significantly better among college-educated white women [than Sen. John Kerry in 2004]."

Republican polling magnate Frank Luntz also predicted the real breakdown among women voters would prove to be age, not location. "Obama will benefit from the usual Democratic advantage among women -- with one caveat," he said. "He is not as likely to win over older women compared to the traditional Democratic presidential candidate. His age, his inexperience and, frankly, his apparent association with people outside the mainstream will definitely frighten older women who would normally support the Democratic nominee. Even the crowds at his rallies raise questions. The aspects of his life and his language that is so appealing to younger women simply does not generate a similar reaction among older women. However, he will win an unusually large share of the younger female vote -- a very potent voting bloc in this election."

In the published 33-page breakdown of the NBC-WSJ poll's results linked to on Pollster.com, the following phrase appears on the front page: "NOTE: The results contained in this document reflect results among the national crossection of voters ONLY." Given that the "suburban women" findings are not included in that document, it appears the Hart and Newhouse polling firms, which conducted the poll for the two media organizations, recognized that its subgroup findings on "suburban women" were not representative enough to include in the breakdown. So far, that hasn't stopped MSNBC from turning those numbers into big news. Emails to NBC's political unit asking for a numeric breakdown of "suburban women" in their poll were not immediately returned.

UPDATE:

MSNBC has now provided The Huffington Post with more information on its "suburban women" finding showing a 44-38 McCain lead over Obama. "This is within the margin of error of 9.34 percent based on a sample size of 110 within the larger poll," an MSNBC source wrote over email. (That's three times the margin of error for the entire poll.) This means McCain's 44 percent figure of support among suburban women could actually be as low as 35 percent, while Obama's 38 percent figure could rise as high as 47 percent -- assuming a 95 percent confidence interval (for the stat wonks in the house). Alternatively, McCain could be leading Obama 53-29. While those distant outcomes are less likely true than NBC-WSJ's 44-38 finding, that broad variance raises questions about the statistical usefulness of this one particular crosstab, as opposed to the rest of the NBC-WSJ poll on the whole.* [Added later]

SECOND UPDATE:

NBC Political Director Chuck Todd defends the use of the "suburban women" crosstab in an email response:

Here's what I can tell you on our crosstabs. We never use one unless we have more than 100 incidents; in this case, the incident rate is approx. 140 interviews. It's always easy to shoot a pollster but the track record of the NBC-WSJ poll is undeniable; campaign operatives on both sides of the aisle believe it's the gold standard for media polls.

A lot of suburban [soccer] moms voted for Bush in 2004 because of the fear card the Republicans played off of 9/11. Women need to be courageous and not listen to the bs that they and their children will not be safe with a democrat is in office. A lot of women went for this nonsense. We have to be strong and courageous. I'm an Arizona suburban woman 63, and I'm voting for Obama and so is my husband.

You think he's got a little suburban woman problem now? Wait until he picks a man for the v.p. slot. Lots of the women coming to him, are doing so in response to Clinton's full-throated endorsement last saturday. (once again, pundits wanted her to walk away exhausted on tuesday night... concede then and there... completely drained and beaten up. what good would that have done obama in the long run? none. she got maximum press exposure for probably the biggest endorsement of a narrow loss in the history of either party, and unlike ted kennedy or reagan, she did it early, when it mattered. but i get the sense, from what i'm seeing, that these same women think obama will pick her for v.p. no way will his people let him. she's not 'new' enough. what a joke. we've got sam nunn, and the rest of the good old boys. obama should remember what happened to kathleen kennedy townsend. she lost because she was too afraid to put an african american on the ticket with her. that it would be too much change. so she picked a conservative white male, big anti-crime background. backfired. if it were just obama and mccain, no v.p. to contend with, obama would win this election, no question. but the choice of v.p. for both of them has never been so key for a presidential wannabe.

Do you understand that the vetting process, as it has been for over 100 years, means that the VP and their spouse must release their financial information? Do you honestly believe that B.ill is going to? Not a chance in h@ll.

She can't be VP because of the vetting process. She (perhaps unfairly) and Bildo (fairly) would be put throught the ringers for the Kazakhstan uranium deal alone.

I hope that "full-throated" bandwagon loses a wheel and crashes soon. I'm already sick of that new catchword. Let it go to the graveyard with "at the end of the day", "if you will", and all those other terms which become obnoxious when all of the talking heads decide to use them repeatedly.

Those who are truly Dems will vote for Obama no matter whom he chooses as his running mate. The alternative is insanity. We've got less than 5 months to show them why.

oh please! if he picks the typical white male none of her supporters or anyone else will go as ballistic as you say.

The VP is not just about winning in November. You will have to work with this person for the next 4-8 years. In addition, Hillary's supporters ---- the nutty ones not the smart ones---will still have a hard time seeing her as second fiddle and cry sexism for as long as Obama is in office.

I'm a suburban soccer, bball, karate, tennis, and orchestra mom and I support Barack. I don't understand how they can now put that out there. I thought he was having problems with poor white people and Hispanic people. Now since their polls don't show the problem with Hispanics, they have to come up with another demographic to slice and dice. SAD.

I agree. It gives the news media something to spin and churn about and to pursuade voters that they should be voting "with" others who are like a certain polling group. At least, I think that's the subliminal message. And it gives them also a chance to point to some dissected portion of the white population that may not be voting for Barack. Thus, there is another weakness for them to claim as solid fact. But what is a fact is that Obama is not going to be able to personally talk to each and every citizen in the United States. But next they will be polling pet owners, women who eat yogurt, white men who cut the grass after 6 p.m., etc. There's no end to all of our diversities. However, there seems to be not such attention to faction the population when it comes to McCain. And we all know the reason.

I live in a suburban city 14 miles north of Dallas. I am white and I have supported Sen. Obama since he announced he was in the race. We drove to Austin for the Obama rally before super tuesday. What the media and the racist do not understand is that the same God that created white people also created all the other races. So when you start hating people of any color, you are hating what God created.

He liked and respected anyone, regardless of what race they were, as long as they gave him respect. When he filled out applications, he would write "human" race!

At least we do not have to deal with Mitt Romney, and his church that believes black people are the descendants of Cain, made "loathsome" and dark as punishment.

By the time Barack has been president for four years there will be less racism in this nation. I know it.

Where does this idea that older white woman are frightened by Obama's associates? Or anything about Obama? Makes us sound like a bunch of wusses who have been protected all our lives whereas most of us have been dealing with all sorts of men in our lives, sweet and scary, both in the home and in the workplace. We've cracked and broken glass ceilings and that's not a job for the faint of heart! I think that our concerns center more around the economy, the war, and the future of our children. I'm scared of getting laid off again in my 50s, like many men. Not Obama's pastor. I don't think that we are that easily scared. Are we? "Whose afraid of the big, bad, Obama?" I'm voting for Obama because he represents my interests and shares my values.

I sent Morning Joe an email today about them focusing on Johnson resigning from the Obama campaign, and the fact that they "harped" on the "suburban white women" thing, and not the fact that Barack picked-up support with women overall and Hispanics. Female host, Mika, and Joe were "peeved" because they said the Obama campaign was trying to portray John McCain as 'confused". Wait till I email all stations tomorrow that McCain doesn't know how to use a computer. They already know it, they just won't report it.

Well, they would not have a thing to talk about if they did not create mischief now that their target for most of the venom has conceded. It is all about air time and ratings, so they are riling y'all up with national polls that are basically useless since electoral votes are what will count in November, anyway. My little vote in Kansas for Obama wont' mean much when Mccain is up by 20. But I am used to never having my voice heard in December when the electoral college meets. Remember, those of you who are old enough, that Al Gore got over 480 thousand more votes thatn George Bush nationwide, but Florida electoral votes and the supreme court gave Bush the election.

I believe that Obama will win, and with a majority of all groups but white men. HOWEVER, I think there is a large minority of Clinton women voters who are still angry because of the extremely negative comments made about Clinton/her supporters. All along there have been warnings that this could impact the general election. Because McCain is such a terrible "women's" candidate, I think almost all of these disinfranchised voters will return to the Democrats in the fall, but this is not a done deal. The message, over and over, to older white women was - who needs you, you old bag! Why is there amazement that older white women might not take this too well.

There is amazement because many of us expect maturity from "older" women . We expect them to have enough sense to vote the issues... NOT threaten to vote against issues that are in their best interest because strangers wrote something they don't like on an internet site. In this country people have a right to voice and write their opinions, while that right is quickly eroding, as of today it remains our right as Americans . How offensive, silly, selfish and unamerican to even think you can threaten and strongarm someone into surrendering their very basic right. I hear and read remarks that infuriate me everyday, but I don't stomp, pout and brood over it and I damn sure am not going to threaten refusal to vote in my best interest because of it.

The foolishness of that is absolutely stunning even if it were the conduct of a twenty year old. If these women are older women they need to start acting like some wisdom has accompanied their age.
