Several of Hillary Clinton's most influential female supporters, urged members of the pro-choice, pro-female candidate group, EMILY'S List to overcome their grief over Clinton's loss and throw their support behind Barack Obama. There were tepid and then more sustained cheers.

Speaking at group's annual luncheon celebrating in Washington D.C., Ellen Malcolm, EMILY's List's founder and director, offered a highly personalized plea for Democratic unity, saying that the possibility of a John McCain presidency outweighed political grudges.

"I have been meandering my way through the various stages of grief: sadness, bargaining, anger, and my personal favorite dessert," she said to a crowd of approximately 900. "And so for the sake of my waistline as much less the sake of the party and country, I will follow Hillary Clinton and say it is time for the party to come together."

The crowd applauded. Later in the event, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, another Clinton supporter, declared that "we are all in one campaign now" and "the reality is that this year the Democratic Party produced not one but two candidates who are qualified to win in November." She was greeted with a more enthusiastic reception.

Throughout the primary, Malcolm had been one of the most outspoken supporters of Clinton's candidacy, often questioning whether female supporters could end up backing Obama. After Clinton bowed out of the primary race, she continued to express a sense of hesitation in supporting the Illinois Democrat before changing her tone in recent days.

"I spoke to Senator Obama on Friday and I told him I would do all I could to defeat John McCain," she told the crowd. "We are here today to begin the final stage of '08. This is the election we have been waiting for. The country is fed up with the policies set by George W. Bush and his allies in Congress. Voters want change. I want change. Do you want change?"

Outside the hall, many attendees said that they had come to grips with Clinton's loss and were willing to back Obama, a development that the Illinois Democrat is banking on to win the White House. But the process was long and difficult, they added, and it would take time for them to get over what they viewed as perceived slights, especially those that came at the hands of the media.

"The large majority of the mainstream media as well as on the blogs have been overwhelmingly sexist to the point of misogyny," said Sharon Gorseld, Executive Director of the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum. "There really needs to be an examination by the media, journalists, and owners of outlets. There needs to be a long term analysis and study of this problem and they can use Senator Clinton's campaign as a starting point."

To the disaffected crowd members, Malcolm commiserated. The event ended as it began, with efforts to rally the EMILY'S List crowd behind the Illinois Democrat.

"This was an extraordinary and somewhat astonishing nominating process," she said at the receptions onset. "I know that in this crowd there are Barack Obama supporters. I respect your choice and I understand the excitement you must feel by his historic victory. But for Emily's list and me personally, the choice was always clear. We wanted Hillary Clinton to be the next president. For those of us who supported Hillary this is a challenging time, one of many emotions. Hillary was a magnificent candidate."

Obama doesn't care if the 17 million Hillary supporters vote for him or not. The latest news that he chose Patti Solis Doyle as chief of staff for the V.P. is an "up yours" to Clinton and her supporters.

It amazes me that these so-called feminist who are threatening to vote for McCain because Hillary did not receive the Democratic nomination want to be taken seriously when none of them have really stood up for Hillary until she LOST! Where were these so-called feminist when ALL of the men in Hillary's camp was losing the nomination for her, when these same men fired Patti Solis but kept Mark Penn, when it was initially learned that Florida and Michigan would not count, when Carville stated that Hillary had cojones or the Hillary nutcracker made its debut, when McCain asked why was Chelsea so ugly - because Janet Reno was her father, when McCain committed adultery on his injured wife; left her for Cindy, then called her a cun>>t, when Bill Clinton totally embarrassed Hillary with Monica, Paula and Gennifer, or the Repugs attacked Michelle and her children? Where were they?

African Americans ARE LOYAL to our PARTY even when OUR PARTY is NOT being loyal to US! For years, African American women have known that White women were not the true feminist, that they were all about themselves and not women in general for a vote for McCain will set the women's movement back 100 years - FEMINIST MY A$$ - THEIR WHITE IS SHOWING - AND WE ALL SEE IT! So I personally urge them to vote MCCAIN and prove us African American women RIGHT - that it is not about women but THEIR WHITENESS!

Your remarks expose the strategy that too many are taking in our party, and it is repugnant. Sorry, sexism exists, and sorry, people need to stand up against it. Calling people racists to silence them is repugnant and will not promote a multicultural agenda. It will work for a while, and then there will be a big backlash. As much as Obama supporters want to make it only feminists who are leaving the party, there's also a number of other people sick with this divisive identity politics. I'm loyal to justice and democracy, not to the Democratic Party, which has proven to be uncomitted to both these principles.

That's what happens when you go extreme to try to win an election. You're stuck facing down the monster you created. They tried to paint him as someone having 'bad judgment', 'too inexperienced' and 'capitalizing off of sexism' (ignoring her glad willingness to capitalize off of racism. She encouraged it, he did not). I'd like us to be 'one party' too, but I sure hope this serves as a lesson for future campaigns it's NOT ok to gut a member of your party during a race. It's idiotic to do so.

People who are still feeling cheated out of Hillary's nomination should realize that Hillary DIDN"T HAVE 18 MILLION VOTES BEHIND HER. Just look at her debts and you will find the truth: her debts would be wiped out if she REALLY has 18 million voters who donate just two dollars each. But Hillary didn't have them!!
Most of the 18 millions who voted for her at the beginning have FLED HER after she led or sided with McCain to attack her fellow Democrat.
Wake up and don't make the mistake of voting for the opponent of your principles. Not only you have to live with it but your children and their children's too.

I am perplexed by any woman who says she is a demcrat; believes in the rights that women have fought so ernestly to attain then votes for John Mccain. I can not make sense out of that type of nonsense. Ok so Hillary is not the democratic nominee, but neither is Edwards, or Biden, or Dodd, etc..
If their followers felt the same as the Hillary followers there would be no democratic party to vote for, because each group would only follow their own candidate. Come on fellow Dems, we must stand together in order to remove this foolishness we have dealt with for the past 8 years. Put aside your own your own dissapointments and vote according to your own self interest. What candidate best serve what you saw in Hillary other than gender. Because if gender is all you see now, then perhaps you are the sexist.

I wish people would realize that Obama beat Hillary fair and square and this continous whining about what would have been is ridiculous. Hillary said that in her concession speech..lets move forward and lets not talk about "what ifs" and "what could have happened". If you really supported Hillary then this has got to stop. Obama's attention should be on McCain and not trying to appease Hillary supporters..it's over..and now it's time to work for a Democrat who happens to be Obama..let's put this sexism discussion to rest!!

I can't vote for Obama. Won't be voting for McCain either. The democratic party has made it very clear that women are not a legitimate constiutent base welcome in leadership roles. We're free to donate money, walk precincts, phone bank , throw house parties and put up lawn signs but when it comes to an equal number of seats at the table there is no room.

So, as for the "Sweetie" comment, it's akin to the political butt slap and "Go get me a beer Honey". When the party decides it values women maybe women will return to the party. Until then...no thanks.

PS--Obama can find no qualified women for VP??

Some of us have the Audacity to Hope.

Obama calls a reporter "sweetie", and McCain calls his wife a "c**t, and McCain gets your vote?

That's deep. And that benefits women, how?

If you're a Clinton supporter whose disappointment is making you seriously consider sitting out the election, or voting for Senator McCain, cool. I respect that. It's your vote. And you shouldn't vote for Obama just because Senator Clinton says so. Taking orders is for the army.

However, if in November you've decided to vote for McCain, since this is about our soldiers, our quality of life, our civil liberties, and our living standards, at least make Senator McCain give you something in policy for it. Think about what issues are really important to you, and Senator Clinton policy wise , and make McCain at least give you some serious consideration of addressing them, and respect for your vote--especially if you're a real feminist.

If you don't make him at least do that, it'll be just a spite vote, nothing more. Give your vote, more meaning than that.

It's now mid-June. The primaries and caucuses are complete and we have a nominee. And anyone who wants to conduct a post-mortem on what happened is free to post endless rehashes of every slight, mis-statement, poor media coverage, biases of race and gender, for the rest of your miserable freaking lives but I HAVE HAD IT!

I'm busy getting Barack Obama elected and if you're not committed to doing the same, then I STRONGLY encourage you to spend the rest of your days talking about the past. It will just make it easier for those of us who are looking to the future to leave you all behind to stew and fret and point fingers at each other.

OUT!

Since there was hardly a dime's worth of difference between Obama and Clinton on the issues, no wonder liberal women like Albright and Malcolm are, naturally, as every sane person knew they'd have to, lining up behind NARAL and Obama. Women like Albright (esp.) and Malcolm need to be at the forefront of warning women not just about Roe v. Wade under McCain, but, perhaps even more importantly, about much more war and innocent deaths in the Middle East under McCain, who will not only prolong the Iraq War's killing indefinitely, but is also likely to follow the neocon Bush line on Iran, either attacking it himself, if Bush hasn't, or applauding Israel for attacking it. A three-front war in the Middle East is the last thing this country needs in its war on terror. The latest polls show "suburban women" favoring McCain over Obama. We tend to think of women as "anti-war," but plenty of women are driven by sheer fear, and are putty in the hands of the Republican fear machine. These women are the ones I worry about most. Men can be manipulated with calls to "courage" and "victory"; suburban women, as opposed to strong feminists, are more likely to be susceptible to fear tactics and the need for a "strong man" to protect them. So liberal women need to do their best to address these suburban women and warn them not to be conned by Republican fear tactics yet again.

2 things:
1) This unseemly competition between oppressed groups, in this case, women vs. blacks, is sad & usless & only makes people stupid so we vote against our interests. Then who wins? The GOP. I can't bear the thought.
2) I'm thinkin' Madeleine Albright would be a great pick for Veep.

Ms. Gorseld, there needs to be an examination of not only misogny, racism, classism, etc. Unity comes with sympathy to those who shared a similar plight as yours during this election season.

I simply do not understand how anyone who supported Clinton could support McCain over Obama. Certainly, if you supported Clinton it wasn't ONLY because she was a woman, but also because you agreed with her policy stances. Clinton and Obama are very, very similar when it comes to policy; they agree on almost everything, and the areas where they do disagree are small and nuanced policy matters which escape all but the most focused policy wonks. By contrast, Clinton and McCain don't agree on anything! McCain's policy stances are about as far from Clintons as possible. By supporting McCain you are supporting the very policies which Clinton stood against!

Nobody voluntarily gives up power. You have to SEIZE it. Finally, Democrats are not only being fair, they're becoming TOUGH. Thanks to people like this (giving up their power reluctantly, but giving it up), Barack will have a good chance to whip the Republicans out of town (existence?). No more dynasties. No more media telling their propaganda. No more entrenched Washington politics. It's a new day and a scary one for you that can't (or won't) change. I'm 50 and have no problem in the least with change. Especially changing the baby boomer crowd OUT of Washington. We're getting old and it's time to get out of the way. Kicking and screaming isn't all that dignified. The internet and the youth will prevail- better get used to it! We all die eventually:)
