I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Menendez

One of Congress' most influential Hispanic members says that John McCain "walked away" from the Latino community and is not a "person of principle" on immigration reform -- a perception that could haunt the Arizona Republican in the general election.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Sen. Robert Menendez offered a scathing rebuke of McCain, painting him as a candidate who sold his political soul to secure his party's presidential nomination.

"In my mind, he has dramatically shifted. He has really taken a Republican tact," said the New Jersey Democrat. "It seems to me, and it is out there in the community, that he walked away at a critical time. And when you take that view, which shows that he is not the person of principle that he would like to show himself being, and you wear the Republican mantle that is so negative and anti-immigrant... I think it is very hard for John McCain to make hay with Latinos at the end of the day."

During the course of the Republican primary, McCain veered away from his support of a comprehensive immigration reform bill, citing, openly, the political pressures being put on him by the conservative base.

"I understand why you would call it a, quote, shift," McCain told reporters. "I say it is a lesson learned about what the American people's priorities are. And their priority is to secure the borders."

Ultimately, the move helped McCain net his party's nomination. But not without a cost. As Menendez argues, many now believe that the GOP nominee caved for political gain; something McCain's camp adamantly denies.

"Everyone knows that John McCain risked his political life to lead on the bipartisan immigration reform effort last year," his spokesperson Brian Rogers told The Huffington Post. "He bucked his party in the middle of a presidential campaign, and was attacked relentlessly for it. These cheap partisan attacks are unfortunate and absurd."

How McCain transitions on immigration during the general election could, in the end, be a major determinant of his candidacy's success. Will he try to champion his initial position, which included pathways towards citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country? Or will any move away from conservative orthodoxy be seen, as Menendez predicts, as a flip-flop-flip of historic proportions?

"The question that I would ask is: 'How are we supposed to believe you?' said Menendez. "Considering what they did to John Kerry on the question of the war, this would be much easier to do with John McCain. It would be: 'I was with you, before I was against you, before I was with you.'"

Those questions will come into sharp focus in July, when McCain is scheduled to appear before the National Council of La Raza, a pro-immigration group that took great umbrage with his adopted hard-line mentality.

"I expect him to try and dissemble and speak in ways that would lead you to the impression that we have to have comprehensive immigration reform," said Menendez. "But the question that has to be posed to him, first and foremost, is... how are we supposed to believe you in the first place, when you previously said something different? I think he's made his bed. He's tried to have it both ways and he came to the conclusion that to win the Republican primary he had to fall in bed with all the hardliners and anti-immigrants. And I think he will not successfully equivocate on this."

Menedez's critique of McCain's immigration policy is the hardest yet during the general election campaign. Various pro-immigration groups and elected officials had previously taken the Arizona Republican to task for his shifted position. But colleagues in the Senate have, by and large, kept their powder dry.

That said, Menendez wasn't 100 percent convinced that the Latino vote would break overwhelmingly for Barack Obama. While recent polling has the Illinois Democrat doing better among Hispanics than Sen. John Kerry in 2004, the numbers may not be enough to change the dynamics of the election.

"The latest poll I saw was Latinos supporting Obama over McCain by a margin of 60-40," said Menendez. "To be honest with you, we can't afford that. I think the Republicans would be happy if they go 40 percent of the Latino vote particularly in key states. If they could achieve that they will be on the road to the White House. I do think Obama will ultimately do well with Latino voters, but there is work to be done."

And what would that work be? Menendez suggested that the presumptive Democratic nominee talk to the Latinos about issues like health care and the economy, both of which disproportionately affect the Hispanic-American community. But there was a short-term solution as well.

Picking Hillary Clinton as vice president "would solidify the Latino situation immediately," said Menendez, a national co-chair of the Clinton campaign, "because she overwhelmingly had that support across the country."

I think it should be possible to debate important issues without resorting to name calling or personal attacks. If we can't learn to listen to each other respectfully, our country will continue to flounder.

The fact is that for most people the illegal immigration debate is not about Latinos. There are folks who are driven by hatred, no question. But the issues of illegal immigrants -- wage stagnation, overcrowded schools, etc, are a result of too many poor people coming into the country to be effectively assimilated.

If you have millions of folks coming here of any ethnic background, the supply of workers will increase and wages will go down. Supply and demand doesn't care about ethnicity, it's a fact of life.

If the illegal immigrants don't have money for health insurance, they won't be able to pay for their emergency room care and the rest of us will foot the bill.

If we had 12 million folks from Iceland who showed up on our doorstep with no English language skills, no money, and no education, we would have the same exact problem -- but in that case the wage stagnation would be caused by blond Europeans.

So lets stop playing the racism card and look at the issues. If we do that we may actually be able to fix things. As it is Latinos are always going to think any discussion on immigration is about them personally.

That part showing McCane giving his first set of wedding vows, followed by his second set would really give insight into his character. No doubt, women everywhere will fall all over themselves to vote for him. He should have no problem capturing the HIllary voter.

He'd be a veritable rock-star for misogynous voters world-wide. His attitudes toward women would no doubt be especially helpful in placating polygamous Islamic cultures who are upset with his Iraq policies.

Since approximately 80% of ILLEGAL ALIENS are Hispanic, it is difficult for them NOT to play "identity politics" without the "race card"; besides, it's really ALL the immigration lobby has excepting their moundering DRIVEL about "family breakup." (as a consequence of their conscious DECISION to create "anchor babies)

Contrariwise, if the ILLEGALS were blond, "Icelandic" Europeans, the POLITICALLY CORRECT in the U.S. would be screaming for employer sanctions, border fences, and hyper-instant deportations...... Part of the POLITICALLY CORRECT agenda is the "adjustment" of the ethnic makeup of the U.S. to conform to their Third World expectations. It's ironic that one of their halcyon state models, South Africa, is in the throes of what the U.S. and Europe can expect should their present demographic courses be prorogued......ANGRY RIOTS!

To prove that this is not a racial argument, you make a comparison between the Latinos and the Icelandic people? Oh, come on. What a silly and totally unlikely comparison. First of all, the United States didn't steal nearly half of the country of Iceland from the Icelandic people in a war of naked aggression, like we did with the Mexicans in the Mexican War. Therefore, they don't have a valid claim on a huge section of American land like the Mexicans do. Secondly, I am sure that if, by some strange miracle that 12 million Icelandic people "showed up on our doorstep," the world would be astounded -- considering the fact that Iceland has a population of only 316,000 people. Thirdly, if 12 million blond icelandic people sneaked into America illegally, they would be much more welcomed than Latinos, because they would face much less discrimination -- since they look like your archetypal "all-Americans," with Northern European physical traits (how ironic that "all-American means to look European) -- and could therefore assimilate here much more easily than Latinos. Fourthly, the ancestors of the Icelandic people (as well as all European Americans, for that matter) -- unlike most of the "illegal Latinos" -- are not native to the western hemisphere, and therefore have less of a right to migrate across North America (which was a common behavioral pattern of the native North Americans, before the Europeans "showed up on our doorstep" and drew their arbitrary "borders" across the land).

Newworldman, If you really look at my point, you'll see I wasn't suggesting that Icelanders actually come here. It was a thought experiment looking at whether we'd have the same job and economic problems if Northern Europeans were immigrating here. And I wish you had responded to the actual issues I raised instead of twisting my meaning.

Second, the USA didn't "steal nearly half the country" from Mexico. In actual fact, the southwest was inhabited by Native Americans until Spain conquered those tribes. The Spanish sent missionaries and colonizers up -- just as English colonists came to the US. Eventually Mexico broke free from Spain (1821).

But the Mexicans of Spanish background never migrated north in high numbers. In Texas the vast majority of colonists were from America -- allowing them to beat Santa Anna in 1836.

California didn't have many Mexicans either -- only about a thousand Spanish speaking families. By the time of the gold rush California had 10 times as many Anglos.

So the fighting and "stealing" was between two sets of colonists, those of English and Spanish background.

Your contention that illegal immigrants have a right to be here because of the colonization that happened 150 years ago is just silly. No one can change history. The US and Mexico are well developed countries, not trackless wilderness. And every country has the right to define who it allows in its borders based on its own national needs.

I have seen no polls that show McCain is getting 40% of the hispanic vote. Yet, Menendez says Obama will win hispanics by 2 to 1. That is 66%. Republicans have a hard time getting to the white house with that kind of Hispanic vote.

Division, division. Bottom line is our borders are wide open and we get strip searched, body scanned, and who know what next all in the name of security. If our constitution is being shredded because of a terrorist threat, why should we not want the borders closed? Our administration is USING immigration as another "division". All sides, all congressmen and senators, not just the jackasses who are running for president, use this issue for votes. Close the borders or give me my freedom back. Stop the money flow to illegal immigrants so that terroists with suitcase nukes don't come in beside them. It's turning into a transparent and obvious ruse for the benefit of the politicians. Tax payers lose - middle class to be specific - as the cost of illegal immigration skyrockets. It has nothing to do with whether or not one likes Mexicans. I'd come here too if I had a country of elite pukes who didn't care about feeding it's country and providing education and jobs. (Yikes, it sounds like America!) The goal (beside votes and division)? North American Union. Bye-bye USA. And Senator Menedez is right on script. And anyone who deals with La Raza needs to do some research on the group. They want us to go back to Europe. And send money I guess otherwise I don't know how they could keep the gears going.

If it's something to do with enforcing our immigration laws., the special interest lobby will crawl out of the sewer to stop its enactment. Just like the SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) a Federal bill, the laggard Democrats don't want voted into law. Corruption has manifested itself, as house Speaker Nancy Pelosi has used intimidation to stop her clan from endorsing this legislation.

Predatory employers would be arrested, fined and possibly imprisoned and millions of illegal aliens would leave of their own accord. It would give extra teeth to all immigration laws now on the books. Demand the SAVE ACT! (2022243121 ) Unsuppressed details at NUMBERSUSA.

WRITE your Congressman/woman and INSIST that he/she sign the discharge petition for H.R. 4088 which would require that the Social Security number of each and every employe be VERIFIED. Presently, MILLIONS of illegals work under bogus/stolen SS#s and identities.

Have you noticed how our crack down on immigration is dramatically raising the cost of fruits and vegetables?

I went to Walmart the other day and found Apricots selling for a dollar a piece. As the Lou Dobbs clones clammer for higher walls and rouding up immigrant farmworkers, expect that to rise to 2 or 3 dollars a piece. No wonder this guy is so heavily invested in the futures market.

The concern of California legislators is understandable considering that California raises about 80% of all fruits and vegetables consumed in the US. The labor disruptions, coupled with the shock of higher oil are begining to make it impossible for US fruit and vegetable farmers to stay in business without dramatically raising their prices, which forces them to either or go out of business.or begin to send the bulk of the produce overseas to places like Europe, Japan, and the Middle East, where customers have currencies strong enough to pay for their produce.

I guess the good news will be people will stop complaining about the high cost of gas. Soon just being able to afford a meal will soon become a more immediate concern.

There is NO right to immigrate; it is not natural law. It is est. and MAY be withdrawn; moreover, past injustices/mistakes do not mitigate present needs.....

Mexico and Latin America have bounteous resources albeit set in a semi-feudal, societal matrix buttressed by the Roman Catholic Church. Demographically, Latin America's birth rates and fertility rates all but negate gains in GDP. Could it be that Latinos prefer hyper-procreation to relative prosperity....???

The evolution of immigration preceeded humans. Its as much a part of human tradition as having a nose. Get used to it, or cut yours off to spite your face. It can't be stopped it can only be channeled.

Immigration is part of the colonial American tradition. In the early days, folks just arrived and few worried about the paperwork. As things got more crowded and immigrants more diverse, the last guy "climbing off the boat" is always hated for spoiling it for those already here, whether they were Irish, Italian, Asian, Black, or Hispanic, or whatever. Its part of our history. Ever heard the story of the Statue of Liberty? It symbolizes what we are as a people and what constitutes American values. Its sad how many now wish to end the tradition that has made America the becon and hope of the world, and that gives America its strength of character.

But hey, salvation is just around the corner. Republicans are so adept in driving the US economy into shambles that soon many American will be emmigrating to Mexico and Canada to find jobs, or overseas to send money home to feed their families. Its already happening in the form of retirees leaving to find less expensive places to live on fixed incomes. Expect, the trend to continue.

I am not sure. I do know that a lot of U. S. citizens are afraid of losing their miniscule piece of the pie. Immigrants are only a threat wen they are Latino. What about the Canadians who drive across the boarder every day?

The real threat to our nation, are the corporations who outsource, and set high prices to reap enormous profits. It wouls take a million immigrants a month to equal the bonuses that CEOs get.

Yes. Its ironic that we only seek solutions on our side of the border. Without asking for changes and reform in Mexico we are destined to continue to face this problem, regardless of how many tall fences we errect or how many species we force into extincion in the process.

The problem is essentially one of economics and in particular corporate interests, which largely dictate the scope and dimensions of the problem. I agree with Obama that NAFTA has to be renegotiated, especially with Mexico. When we permitted corporations to outsource American jobs to Mexico in exchage for more corporate profits, we gave away the leverage we needed to make Mexico reform itself. Their political system is stuck in limbo, dependent on decisions in US corporate board rooms, much as is the case in Iraq. Now, much like Afganistan, where we have created a Mexican economy that thrives on the drug trade or sees the vast bulk of any ligitimate profits in the hands of a few billionaires. As a result, Mexico is largely a non-functional narco-state, that terrorizes its successful citizens with the threat of kidnapping. It offers little to to the multitude of poor Mexicans, who have little choice other than to migrate where they might merely survive.

Immigration reform is indeed much needed. A few questions for the Dems. How many more people can the U.S. handle, with a shrinking economy and resources (i.e., funds, water, productive farmland)? When does a steady influx of illegal immigrants become overpopulation? Do we really need more urban sprawl? And if there is an amnesty, can the legal immigrants get a refund, like a tax deduction, as their "amnesty" for paying the thousands in fees, enduring the protractred consulate process, and then waiting years for a visa? How about it?
