Election Central:

Barack Obama's promise to make a play for North Carolina -- a state that has consistently voted Republican since 1980 -- might just have some potential to really pay off, a new poll from Rasmussen suggests.

The numbers: McCain 45%, Obama 43%, within the ±4% margin of error. This is consistent with other recent polls that have shown McCain with only a small lead here.

BEST COMMONSENSE SOLUTIONS TO GAS AND ENERGY?

DEMOCRAT (HUSSEIN OBAMA) SOLUTIONS:
The Democratic Majority is refusing to address soaring energy prices. Two years ago, Majority Leader Pelosi promised the American people a “commonsense plan” to lower gasoline prices and to sue OPEC. But House Democrats have failed to offer any meaningful solutions. Meanwhile we are paying the Pelosi Premium of nearly $1.50 MORE per gallon than when she took office.

REPUBLICAN SOLUTIONS:
1. Increase the production of American-made energy in an environmentally-safe way This includes the exploration of next generation oil, natural gas, and coal and the production of advanced alternative fuels like cellulosic and clean coal-to-liquids – all while protecting our natural resources for future generations.
2. Promote new, clean, and reliable sources of energy like advanced nuclear and next generation coal, while promoting clean power from renewable energy such as wind and hydroelectric power. Nuclear energy has proven itself as a safe, carbon-free and environmentally friendly alternative, with France relying on it for nearly 80 percent of its electricity needs, compared to just 19 percent in America.
3. Cut red tape and increase the supply of American-made fuel and energy. Democrat Party limiting the construction of new oil refineries and bureaucratic regulations mandating the use of exotic fuels have decreased supply and increased the Pelosi Premium.
4. Encourage greater energy efficiency by offering conservation tax incentives to Americans who make their home, car, and business more energy efficient.

I thought the Republican plan was to use the current (or next manufactured) crisis as a means of funneling more money to wealthy supporters. At least that seems to be the plan up till now.

Commonsense solutions and Republicans is an oxymoron.

I would suggest not only reading the whole article, but the comments as well. There is really good information about the South, very enlightening esp. about the differences in demographics.

More spin...Wall Street/NBC poll points out that if a generic Dem candidate runs against McCain, he/she wins by 16 points...but with Obama, the spread is within the margin of error. Translation: Obama is dragging down the ticket.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:26 AM on 06/13/2008

Assuming you're not pulling numbers out of your nether regions, so the f what?

Of course a "generic Democratic candidate" performs better than a real human being that people have formed opinions about. But at some point, you have to substitute an actual human being for that cardboard cutout and presto, their baggage has some weight to it.

HC is certainly not a "generic Democratic candidate" in that she's a woman, has sky-high negatives among independents and Republicans, and a whole stateroom full of baggage and another suite filled with her husband's.

If you ran the poll using Dodd or Biden, more like what most think of as a "generic Democratic candidate" I bet Obama would outpoll them significantly against McCain. But then, Dodd, Biden and Clinton didn't win the nomination, so we'll take the hand we're dealt and run the table with it anyway. But thanks for the concern trolling.

Actually McCain polls better than a generic Republican candidate. But, you're right. It is what it is...McCain and Obama are the nominees.

Hey, wishful thinker, polls don't determine who gets elected. It's still early. The Democratic nomination contest was unprecedentedly competitive. The tidal wave is growing and the differences will come out and McCain will be well into double digits behind by the convention. It's going to be a long summer for Grandpa. He can't even win over his own base, for crying out loud.

I said it 1st people! O'bama may sweep the Mid-Atlantic again just like he did in the primaries!! This is a heavy heavy military area and a lot of men and women here are tired of carrying their families alone due to this war! The more evidence comes out that prove this war may have been a subterfuge is a nail in the coffin for the Reps! Mark my words!

My In-laws live in NC and they are Republicans who are looking at Obama. They especially look up to Colin Powell, who has eluded to the fact that Obama is worth listening to and thinking about.

NC may be ready for pickin', but it won't be Republicans that get Barack over. NC is a consistently Democratic state - statewide. It will take the bluedogs to get a win. They will be a tough sell. The rural areas in Heath Schular (west)country and the rural east are red nationally.

Why would anyone EVER look up to Powell who sacrificed his integrity to shill lies for Bush?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:27 AM on 06/13/2008

Relax, he was tricked like the rest of us. At least he admitted his mistake and left the Bush administration in disgust. I can respect him for that.

Unfortunately, Powell owed Bush 41 a favor and took the job of Secretary of State to keep Lil Bush out of trouble. Chaney and Rummy counter punched him and brainwashed Lil Bush. The only redeeming virtue was Powell's act of contrition when interviewed by the press. He apologized. He knew he screwed up and admitted it.

I agree. I just said the same thing this morning. Pat Buchanan only sees the negatives and the problems. Listen though, sometimes someone will push him and he caves in and gives a states the truth, therefore giving some positives about Obama.

You are not alone. He is on most of the MSNBC programs throughout the day, and is always available to use the republican talking points against Obama. Ususally one of the other guest will call him on his nonsense. He is given a free pass when on the morning joe program. During the 3 weeks, Joe Scarborough was away from morning joe, the cast and guess continued to call Pat on his comments, but that ended once Joe returned to work. He is a republican and will say and do anything to get McM elected.

He may win Alabama there are about 200,000 unregistered African American Voters in Alabama, and 500,000 unregistered AA in GA. He stands a better shot at taking those two states than he does taking Florida.

The Republicans will have to spend money in both states if Obama mobilizes

In the primaries here in the Old North state, we had two dems running hot and heavy for the Dem nod for Governor, Richard Moore began, I think, 30 points behind, ran to the left of Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue and came extremely close to taking the nomination from her. The only way Perdue kept him at bay was to turn left. In the Tarheel state this year, we are living is VERY interesting times. I would not rule ANYTHING out.
