I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama And Rahm

As the man who guided (and pressured and arm-twisted) Democrats to historic congressional gains in 2006, what is Rep. Rahm Emanuel doing now about party members like Rep. Dan Boren who have balked at publicly endorsing Sen. Barack Obama?

Emanuel interjected before I could get my question out.

"Look, I talked to Dan, and I talked to all those guys," he said. "I'm not worried. I just think that's all -- it's reporters who, you know, just a little too much..." He trailed off, perhaps cognizant of present company. "If you had a real problem, I would deal with it. But it's not a problem."

As proof, Emanuel references Indiana Rep. Brad Ellsworth, another Democrat who hasn't yet endorsed Obama. "Brad's got flooding in his district, his people are flooding," he said. "If you ask Brad what he's doing in November, he'll tell you: he's voting for Barack Obama. If you ask Boren, 'I'm voting for Barack Obama.' I mean, it's what they're doing in November, for those guys, that matters. Not what they're doing today, when they're working on their districts. And they'll support their candidate."

The famously acid-tongued Chicagoan may be right, Democrats like Ellsworth and Boren may not pose a problem. But the Republican National Committee is sure trying to make them one. GOP officials have blasted out press releases highlighting Boren's claim that Obama has the "most liberal" voting record in the Senate. "You go ask Boren," Emanuel says, "he'll tell you his view is that that was taken out of context, that he is going to support the nominee."

(He was right: "My comments were taken out of context and as I have said from day one I will vote for the Democratic nominee in November," Boren told The Huffington Post.)

As for Rahm, his support was never in doubt. "I put my life into electing Democrats, okay?" he says.

And so it's understandable when he describes in some detail the agony of being forced to spend the entire 17-month Democratic presidential primary on the sidelines. "I didn't want to get between two friends. This is not what I want to do. I don't want to choose... I talked to Hillary today, she's a friend of mine. Why do I want to be in a position of picking between two friends?"

Story continues below

He continues: "It was a personal level." The Clintons are "dear friends" who he worked for "intimately," and "unlike others" in the Clinton administration, he notes, Bill Clinton came to campaign for him when he ran for office. "Everything I asked Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton to do when I was chair of the [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee], they did willingly. For the DCCC, Bill Clinton went to 36 districts, countless emails for fundraising, countless fundraisers around the country. There's not a thing I asked him or her to do that they didn't do. Now I'm not going to -- maybe other people can easily throw that away, but I wasn't going to do that."

On the other hand, Barack and Michelle are friends, he says. "I've known him a long time. We used to sit around helping our governor get elected, help those strategy meetings, stuff like that."

Indeed, they share the same political breeding ground. I asked him about the phrase "Chicago-style politics," ubiquitous in profiles of both him and Obama. "Chicago-style politics? Well, first of all, politics is our all-season sport... People always know somebody or someway or somehow to make it into politics, it's not some distant thing. Look at today, just pick up the paper. The Speaker of the House, who's a Democrat, is the one encouraging people to file articles of impeachment against the governor, who's a Democrat. That usually how we do it?" He laughs. "So that's Chicago-style politics. A lot of elbows, a lot of tackling."

And Obama is a candidate with sharp elbows who can win, Emanuel notes, before ticking off a series of states won by George Bush that he thinks may go blue in '08: Colorado, Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada -- he stops himself. "But that's not for me, that's for the [Obama] campaign." He veers back to the electoral map. "I would also put Ohio in that category."

But for all his optimism about the national trend towards Democrats, he remains skeptical that Howard Dean's 50-state strategy has much to do with it. "Surely it didn't have anything to do" with the three straight Democratic victories in special House elections this year, two of them in overwhelmingly Republican districts. "I know what we did. I know what the race was about in each of those cases, and what won it. We had superiorly recruited our candidates this cycle. They had inadequate candidates."

As for Emanuel's personal political future, I ask him about the Robert Novak column that suggested he was eying Obama's potentially soon-vacant Senate seat. "Please..." he mutters. "First of all, it did not say that, it said the Speaker wanted me [to run], it didn't say I wanted to. Just go read the piece." I said I thought there was a presumption in the story that Emanuel himself wanted the spot. "There was no presumption. So let me just disabuse you of presumption."

For the record, he was right about Novak's piece. I am disabused.

Corporate press spins that McCain has little chance of winning all the while he is anihilating Obama in the straw polls Obama only leads slightly in 14 states....While McCain has wide margin leads in important states. I am not a McCain fan nor am I for the republicans....but I hope Obama loses big time...and it looks like he will....Those that finagled him into the nomination by way of wierd delegation apportioning, are gonna be asking themselves where's Hillary we should have nominated her. Obama doesn't have a prayer without her as VP, and I dearly hope she doesn't want that position. She should run independent and screw all that screwed her

You've said this same thing in 3 different posts. What you're trying to do is not admirable, nor is it productive. Worse, it's plain dumb - which indicates to me that you're not likely a legitimate Hillary Clinton supporter, either. Your whole goal is to keep democrats divided into November - and believe me - you will fail.

Trinidad707, I am in agreement with you that Obama will lost this November. Let's hope that Hillary is NOT on the ticket. She deserves better. Let him win with his coalition whatever that is. We've got the wrong candidate once again.

The problem does not stop in Indiana. It spreads as far west as Nevada where Rep. Berkeley said on friday that she is not endorsing Sen.Obama until he clarifies his position on yucca mountain.I believe anyone outside of GWB can see this ploy for what it is,a blatant move to keep HRC in the mix.If not for the present then thinking ahead to 2012.More evidence that democrats will cut off their noses to spite their face.If all democrats don't get on board with the candidacy of Sen.Obama all the gains achieved during this past primary season will be lost and the political enviorment in this country will be more polarized than ever.

They will be made to tow (toe?) the line or they will be drummed right out of the democratic party. We have no room for traitors. This election is too important. I'm talking about the issues, not Obama or Hillary.

Real Dems put America first? hahahahahaha! Thanks for the laugh. The democrats are all about selling out the country to the corporations just as much as their republican counterparts. They are just not as up-front about it. Come on my friend, get informed... read a little history and you'll learn about your beloved democrats... Then you'll be in a position to make informed comments. Until then, you're just speaking from a purely emotional aspect and therefore, spinning inaccuracies.

Why should anyone suppport a candidate they don't believe in? A lot of republicans won't support McCain, a lot of democrats won't support Obama.

Maybe the two party system is dead. I hope so, its the only way to get more choice.

The people who don't support McCain don't like him for his devilish ideology.

Most of the people who don't like Barack are hating on him because he is a tall, great looking, very smooth, and intelligent Black man. Barack can't change that and I'm sure he doesn't desire to do so. Do you understand the difference between the two?

Where is PhD. Lani Gaunier now when we desperately need her? She has done a lot of thinking and writing on about how to make this a much fairer society for minorities. I believe she would do something like this. Since ALL surveys on White racial attitudes indicate that at least 60% of Caucasians harbor strong anti African American, she would take away 60% of the Caucasian vote for McCain and give it to Barack. I would strongly support that. It would level the playing field a whole bunch. Here is some of her thoughts from her own mouth; not from mine.

Here is the link by PhD Lani Guinier that I had intended to share in the last post. This one is only 15 minutes long and not 79 minutes. She doesn't discuss affirmative action in this clip.. She only talks about how to make things fairer for minorities in a society where the majority population outnumbers the largest minority by at least 4 to 1.

I would love to see her ideas implemented. Then Barack would have a fair chance of winning.

Since Hillary and Obama are almost identical on the issues, there is no excuse for Hillary supporters not to back Obama. Obama stands for democratic ideals. If they don't like it, they are free to leave the party. But the issues in this campaign: the war, universal healthcare, the economy, the supreme court, global warming, are to dam-n important for pouting egos.

Obama is simply not connecting with a lot of Hillary's supporters, at least 1/3. A lot of them simply believe he resume is too thin and/or there are lingering doubts about who the Obama's are.

Obama is trying to repackage himself for older white women and Latinos. It may come across as phony and if he starts pandering what does he support base have to say about that? Based on the posts I see here Obama supporters are OK with "old politics" to get the Obama's moving into the White House.

If Obama really walked it like he talked it he would not repackage himself. He will and look out for him changing his Iraq policy. And if he makes it to the WH don't hold your breath for a big change in the way the Iraq war is being conducted. Obama is not going to turn Iraq over to Iranian interests. What happens in Iraq won't be that much different under McCain or Obama.

I shudder to think what will happen to this country if John McCain became president. It is hard to believe that any voter would continue the Clinton rhetoric. Senator Obama is the Deomocratic candidate. Actually, I know a lot of Republicans will vote for Obama because their gut feeling is McCain just is almost as bad as re-electing a Bush. Our country cannot survive without a good person at the helm. I can leave it as "good" ... but what I mean is intelligent, insightful, very smart in his knowledge of people and the world, and he CARES. He says what he means, and guess what, IT MAKES SENSE! How refreshing! Someone with good judgment, and as Tim Russert said, is "real." Come on America ... we need Barack Obama now ... the Bush administration has destroyed so much of the good that this country is all about.

The race for control of the nation's problem will be over before it starts if we don't stop it.

I think we need to be careful NOT to eat our own. We are not perfect but we are not repubs either.

There are REAL problems and issues. The primaries are over!!! Recognize there are some really hurt feelings on all sides. I personally have some issues with things said by the other camp.

I live in a state that is so out of touch with the rest of America it is scarey. I would request that dems really think about what our nation is facing!

In the Air force there is a core principle I think everyone should live by:

There is no reason to worry about these foot draggers. Politics and politicians love a winner. Obama won the nomination fair and square and immediately took over the party--Barack Obama now IS the Democractic Party. Once these malcontents realize that the Clintons are history they will come scratching at the door, looking to kiss Barack's butt. And as I hear it, even though they will be latecomers, he will warmly welcome them without penalty (unlike the Clintons who keep an "Enemies List").

You, instead, have a gut feeling that he can get the job done with little real evidence in his background. Face it; many of us will either vote for McCain or sit this one out. My wife and I will vote for Dem congressmen and, perhaps, McCain. Certainly Obama is not going to acquire the requisite experience before November, so he viability as a presidential candidate is not even a realistic consideration.

THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!
ten steps that "fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders [employ to] seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies.” The ten steps are:
1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
2. Create a gulag
3. Develop a thug caste
4. Set up an internal surveillance system
5. Harass citizens' groups
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. Target key individuals
8. Control the press
9. Dissent equals treason
10. Suspend the rule of law

Why should WE think about the future of America now? We have - in 3 elections -
2000 (Al Gore), 2004 (John Kerry) and 2008 (Hillary Clinton -- the shoe in). Just because morons under the age of 25 decided to participate in the election instead of American Idol and cost us the white house...doesn't mean that thinking democrats should support your ruinous behavior.

People voted for Hillary because they liked her and believed in her and the Clinton administration to turn our countries problems around... not because of idol worship. Hillary might like people to vote for Obama, but 'we the people' think for ourselves and will vote for the better of the 2 candidates -- and in this case - McCain is the lesser of 2 evils. If nothing else, he deserves it for his life of public service. Obama has done ZERO.

First of all TYLERWEST beeing 25 does not make one a moron . We can argue how ever that forsaking ones country just because his or her canidate lost fair and squar .Well lets just say thats not right. Question Was the whole GEORGE MCCAIN Black Baby thing a Republican smear? If so would it not be fair to say that beeing black in the Republican Party is a bad thing . I would think so, Then why would you TYLERWEST want to vote for a party like that , Are you one of the people who would not vote for Obama under no circomstance, more directly ARE YOU TYLERWEST A RACIST ? If so then you should state your position and STOP HIDING BEHIND SEN. HILLERY CLINTON . She deserve better than that. Stop it now YOUR DISGUSTING. STOP IT NOW

No Hillary wants a Hillary win and if that doesn't happen she wants Obama to lose. Have you heard her say anything since her non-consession consession speach when she susspended her capaign. No.... that's because she wants a Dem loss so she can say, " I told you so; noe vote for me 2012." Hillary is not fooling anyone but Hillary nuts. She doesn't give a damn about the party all she cares about is herself.
