I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama And Rahm

As the man who guided (and pressured and arm-twisted) Democrats to historic congressional gains in 2006, what is Rep. Rahm Emanuel doing now about party members like Rep. Dan Boren who have balked at publicly endorsing Sen. Barack Obama?

Emanuel interjected before I could get my question out.

"Look, I talked to Dan, and I talked to all those guys," he said. "I'm not worried. I just think that's all -- it's reporters who, you know, just a little too much..." He trailed off, perhaps cognizant of present company. "If you had a real problem, I would deal with it. But it's not a problem."

As proof, Emanuel references Indiana Rep. Brad Ellsworth, another Democrat who hasn't yet endorsed Obama. "Brad's got flooding in his district, his people are flooding," he said. "If you ask Brad what he's doing in November, he'll tell you: he's voting for Barack Obama. If you ask Boren, 'I'm voting for Barack Obama.' I mean, it's what they're doing in November, for those guys, that matters. Not what they're doing today, when they're working on their districts. And they'll support their candidate."

The famously acid-tongued Chicagoan may be right, Democrats like Ellsworth and Boren may not pose a problem. But the Republican National Committee is sure trying to make them one. GOP officials have blasted out press releases highlighting Boren's claim that Obama has the "most liberal" voting record in the Senate. "You go ask Boren," Emanuel says, "he'll tell you his view is that that was taken out of context, that he is going to support the nominee."

(He was right: "My comments were taken out of context and as I have said from day one I will vote for the Democratic nominee in November," Boren told The Huffington Post.)

As for Rahm, his support was never in doubt. "I put my life into electing Democrats, okay?" he says.

And so it's understandable when he describes in some detail the agony of being forced to spend the entire 17-month Democratic presidential primary on the sidelines. "I didn't want to get between two friends. This is not what I want to do. I don't want to choose... I talked to Hillary today, she's a friend of mine. Why do I want to be in a position of picking between two friends?"

Story continues below

He continues: "It was a personal level." The Clintons are "dear friends" who he worked for "intimately," and "unlike others" in the Clinton administration, he notes, Bill Clinton came to campaign for him when he ran for office. "Everything I asked Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton to do when I was chair of the [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee], they did willingly. For the DCCC, Bill Clinton went to 36 districts, countless emails for fundraising, countless fundraisers around the country. There's not a thing I asked him or her to do that they didn't do. Now I'm not going to -- maybe other people can easily throw that away, but I wasn't going to do that."

On the other hand, Barack and Michelle are friends, he says. "I've known him a long time. We used to sit around helping our governor get elected, help those strategy meetings, stuff like that."

Indeed, they share the same political breeding ground. I asked him about the phrase "Chicago-style politics," ubiquitous in profiles of both him and Obama. "Chicago-style politics? Well, first of all, politics is our all-season sport... People always know somebody or someway or somehow to make it into politics, it's not some distant thing. Look at today, just pick up the paper. The Speaker of the House, who's a Democrat, is the one encouraging people to file articles of impeachment against the governor, who's a Democrat. That usually how we do it?" He laughs. "So that's Chicago-style politics. A lot of elbows, a lot of tackling."

And Obama is a candidate with sharp elbows who can win, Emanuel notes, before ticking off a series of states won by George Bush that he thinks may go blue in '08: Colorado, Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada -- he stops himself. "But that's not for me, that's for the [Obama] campaign." He veers back to the electoral map. "I would also put Ohio in that category."

But for all his optimism about the national trend towards Democrats, he remains skeptical that Howard Dean's 50-state strategy has much to do with it. "Surely it didn't have anything to do" with the three straight Democratic victories in special House elections this year, two of them in overwhelmingly Republican districts. "I know what we did. I know what the race was about in each of those cases, and what won it. We had superiorly recruited our candidates this cycle. They had inadequate candidates."

As for Emanuel's personal political future, I ask him about the Robert Novak column that suggested he was eying Obama's potentially soon-vacant Senate seat. "Please..." he mutters. "First of all, it did not say that, it said the Speaker wanted me [to run], it didn't say I wanted to. Just go read the piece." I said I thought there was a presumption in the story that Emanuel himself wanted the spot. "There was no presumption. So let me just disabuse you of presumption."

For the record, he was right about Novak's piece. I am disabused.

This sounds all well and good. But many Democrats will vote Libertarian or Republican this year. It's against their interests, but I now realize that some people will not be moved. So we need to concentrate on the REST of America----those dems, independents and republicans who want to move this country in a new direction. That's what's it's about after having to deal with republicans for the past 8 years....being lied to, spit on and dissed.

The way to beat the problem of people whose minds are locked up is to go out (as I am doing) and register new voters. Obama made a good start during the primary, and I will be a foot soldier for him until November.

Why has being too "liberal" become such an issue. This isn't FOX news. Liberals proposed the US highway system, the G.I. Bill, Environmental Laws. Food Safety Laws. Workplace Saftey Laws, Social Security and more. Everything that make the U.S.A. a modern society is based in LIBERAL accomplishments. We need strong liberal leaders to fix our infrastucture, restore our economy and really support our troops by giving them a modern GI Bill for their future.

Oh, and THE INTERNET is also thanks to Liberals.

I am a proud LIBERAL.

This was posted earlier today, but it and all the related comments disappeared.

I too am a proud liberal, but I know enough of history to be aware of the fact that it was Eisenhower that proposed the interstate highway system. And then took a seat on the board of GM when he retired from the WH.

Actually, the internet is an outcome from the US Army ARPA -- Advanced Research Project Agency. That is where what we know as the internet started.

Forget the labels liberal or conservative. They mean little and labels are used to frame, demean and marginalize.

And he warned us of the military industrial complex that seized control of the country three years after he left office when they assassinated Kennedy and installed Johnson to get their war in Vietnam.

Obama needs to talk a lot about Eisenhower in the coming months and how right he was.

Yes he did. And he and Kennedy were the ones who pushed science and space. You like your internet, microwave, laser surgery's, etc., etc., etc. thank those two presidents. Hey, the greatest environmentalist president is still Teddy Roosevelt. Oh yeah, Great Lakes reclamation projects, pollution laws and standards, etc., etc. don't laugh---Richard Nixon. As was Affirmative Action.

Democrats are progressive. Republicans are regressive. A cursory glance at the past 7 plus years with the crushing of the middle class, jobs shipped out of country to cheap labor markets, gas prices out of sight and rising, housing foreclosures at depression levels, wars and rumors of war, etc. should present a clear picture for voters to make their choice. If you like this misery and want more, vote republican. If you want a chance for a better future, vote democratic. It's that simple.

Rahm Emanuel is not responsible for Democratic gains in 2006. Most of the people he backed lost, because he would only support pro-war candidates. Did anyone bother asking about his position on the war in Iraq (favors) and the planned one against Iran? It's a mistake to assume he's a progressive. He has opposed Howard Dean at every opportunity, yet the election results in 2006 showed that Howard Dean was right: we need a 50-state party.

The answer to your question of what Emanuel will do is obvious: he'll do nothing. He already said, no problem, nothing to do. He didn't even endorse Obama, the senator from his own state, until after Clinton has bowed out. His loyalties at not to Obama, and I would not expect him to do anything to help Obama win.

Right on the money. Pro- Zionist, foreign policy hawk, former IDF. Gets big money from a handful of influential, investment banking types, who like things pretty much as they are. These are the only kinds of candidates, Emanuel supports. Polar opposite of Howard Dean. Capitalizes on anti-war backlash, to secretly hack away at progressive tilt of party.

Do your homework Nico. If Emmanuel liked Clinton, than she wasn't planning on exiting Iraq anytime soon. Especially now, with the "obliterate Iran" crew, just across the strait. Rahm's a DLC guy, sort of a "Reagan Democrat", whatever good there is in that.

I completely agree. Emanuel represents everything that went wrong with the Democratic party's strategy in the 1990s. Instead of ensuring that the party stood for something and that the philosophy was communicated to the country, he played his part in the triangulation politics which became so dominant. He utterly fails to understand that the reason certain "red" states are in play is because Democrats started to get their message. They stopped hiding in the corner (mostly) and confronted Republicans on the results of Republican government.

The difference between Emanuel and Dean is that Emanuel is a tactician while Dean is a strategist. Emanuel might know how to win single elections, but he relies on the environment being friendly to Democrats - something Dean has helped improve with his 50 state strategy. And that strategy is going to pay dividends for many elections to come.

Lieberman, by caucusing with the Dems enable them to claim a 51-49 majority in the Senate. Wait until the elections in Nov to see his chairmanship disappear.

Full diclosure: I am a Deaniac who knocked on doors for him in Iowa's frigid cold 4 years ago. Imanuel has fought Dean tooth and nail and has tried to take credit for the victories in the House in 2006. However, by almost any measure it was Dean's 50 state strategy (and corrupt Republicans) that was the reason for the victory. Further, Imanuel made at least one big mistake in Illinois (and his home town) when he bypassed a candidate for Congress that lost by a small margin in the prior election in favor of one he handpicked that lost despite a Democratic near sweep. How many more we may never know.

Conclusion: Imanuel's gratuitous put down of Dean, after Obama showed his satisfaction with Dean's stratagy and performamnce by asking Dean to continue as Chairman of Party, is simply sour grapes. Immanuel did not have the guts to openly take sides during the primary because had he gone for Clinton he would have been toast in Chicago even though he doubtless preferred Clinton, the DLC's choice. Thus he stayed on the sidelines to protect his political future, but I doubt that the
Obama supporters will forget.

Rahm Emanuel is very bright and a tough fighter, with one exception: he felt that the political merits of "taking impeachment off the table" (in his role as Edgar Bergen role to Mrs. Pelosi's Charlie McCarthy) outweighed the necessity of curing the injuries inflicted upon the constitution by Bush. Emanuel was apparently taking out-dated and inoperable cues from the Republicans impeachment of his former boss, wherein the impeachment process bolstered rather than diminished President Clinton's approval ratings. With a little more savvy, and a little more distance, he might have trusted the electorate to discern between lying about an affair and lying about war and just about everything else.

I can't stress enough how imperative impeachment is, even if it's after Bus'h leaves the White House, in order for it to never happen again. Being civil, giving B'ush a pass, has done nothing to stop the abuses.

Whether it's the effect of the changes by the B'ush administration in our lives or the atrocities that continue to be committed in our names, impeachment is the only instrument to inform Americans about what is at stake for their future and get their assent or refusal, in order to go forward.
