hree full months after GOP-Libertarian candidate Ron Paul announced his presidential campaign would be "winding down", he's actually throwing in the towel for real. Yes, the man who spent over a year pledging to dismantle the United States military has finally ended his quest to be elected its Commander in Chief. Often times portrayed as "crazy", "batshit crazy" and "absolutely freaking nuts", Paul marched to the beat of his own drummer. A drummer that supported building a 700 mile fence along the Mexican border because immigrants are the cause of all our welfare problems.

Ron Paul never did get his chance to abolish the IRS, but his hilarious cranky old man antics certainly did abolish a little bit of the sadness in all our lives. Let's take a look back at the magical year we shared together.

Not so fast, Kemosabe...

Paul, Barr may be forging an alliance for fall election

By Foon Rhee, Boston Globe, June 14, 2008

Signs are emerging of a possible alliance this fall between Ron Paul, the libertarian-minded rebel Republican, and Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee.

Paul was the Libertarian nominee in 1988, and many of his supporters are libertarian-minded on economic and social issues. Just before formally ending his presidential bid Thursday night, the Texas congressman praised Barr, and in a statement yesterday, Barr reciprocated.

"Congressman Ron Paul has fought tirelessly in both the Libertarian Party and the Republican Party to minimize government power and maximize individual liberty," said Barr, a former six-term GOP congressman from Georgia. "I want to thank him for all that he has done for liberty in this nation, and encourage him to continue his fight through whatever avenues he sees fit." ...

On Thursday night, Paul told supporters attending the Texas Republican Party convention in Houston that he was ending his campaign and starting the group Campaign for Liberty to help elect libertarian-leaning Republicans.

Paul hopes that at least 11,000 of his supporters fill a Minneapolis arena for a counter-convention on Sept. 2, timed to coincide with the Republican National Convention in neighboring St. Paul.

I don't think Paul would soil himself by being associated with Bob Barr. Libertarians claim they support limited government, but they actually support ZERO government. I've never been able to get a libertarian to outline just what government role is OK with the party. Building inspectors? No way!! Health inspections at foo dplaces?? Not unless there's a major problem!!! Speeding tickets??? Don't they have real criminals to catch??

I gave up a long time ago on the LP. Watching their convention was like watching someone trying to herd cats. They concentrate on negativity and have no real plan on how they'd provide fr a stable society. They keep insisting that people are self-regulating, which is pure BS, proven wrong over many centuries of human civilization.

The problem is big government people like you keep expecting some sort of genius social engineers in the government to have a magical plan to make society better. It's not gonna happen. Ordinary people have to take initiative on their own to make their world better, it's not gonna happen through the government, or any one person with a magical plan to fix society.

That's my problem with the LP - its a great idea, but impractical.
Sort of like Communism was a great idea in theory, but the practical results didn't work out so well...

Sadly, as much as people hate it - you need a central beaurocratic element to manage things like infrastructure, hospitals, social security, pensions, voting registration, etc..
How do you keep big cities running efficiently without some sort of government?
How much 'help' do you give to people who can't help themselves?
Would it be politically acceptable to let people die who haven't the means or ability to help themselves?
What's an acceptable amount of intervention, and how much govt would you need to cover the basics
In a country with 300 million people, you can't rely on people going it alone.

Well, you could, I guess - but it would just be anarchy with property rights....

As of yet, I haven't heard any concrete, practical policies from the LP as to how they would address these problems. They good with the Big Idea - and I agree with a lot of the theory - but its the Small Stuff that gets you every time.

The logic you use to demean Libertarianism is absurd. The implication that all people are only out to screw each other over is evident in your above comments. Thus, using your reasoning we should have a strong central government to protect us from this?

Do you not see the absurdity of that statement? The easiest way to screw people over is with the power and force of government (the only true monopoly). Since all people are inherently evil (you imply, not me) it would be easy to understand that the vast majority of people controlling government are inherently evil. How would this provide for a stable society?

Your above statements show your lack of understanding of Libertarianism and how a strong central government is the easiest way to lose your natural or God given rights (whichever one you believe in). If you don't think that the government is the biggest destroyer of rights and life than just take a look at what is happening today (habeus corpus, spying on private citizens, Iraq war, etc...) or the 200 million people who lost their lives in the 20th centruy at the hands of governments.

I both like and respect Ron Paul tremendously. And as devoted as he is to the constitution's original values in todays political climate he would have zero chance of passing the legislation he described while campaigning.

If we could clean house(and the senate) and start with a clean slate I would be as much for Ron Paul as anyone. But with our current politicians I believe that Ron Paul would have been a lame duck upon arriving in Washington.

no lame duck: as commander in chief he would be able to order all our troops home from around the world without anyone's permission thereby reducing our economic overhead, our in-your-face foreign policy, and bring much needed man and woman power to our own deteriorating infrastructure. that would be huge!

The only thing Paul could possibly achieve is the overturning of Roe vs Wade. Everything else would be opposed by TPTB. Let him even mention his intention to mess with the Federal Reserve, or oil profits, or the military-industrial complex, and he would live about a week. Don't kid yourself. Paul is a REPUBLICAN. What exactly is it about our Republican representatives that leads you to believe that any (ANY) of them are honest or truthful once they get into power? To me, Paul is just another populist who will say whatever it takes to get into office. Good riddance.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with some or all of his policies, he does this country a great service by asking questions that need to be asked.

In any event, is it required that all of a candidate's thoughts match those of the electorate?

His greatest service is asking whether the United States can afford to continue its empire and whether it should.

Even the most liberal of the Democratic candidates never asked this question. At best, they asserted they oppose the war in Iraq, which position is the least this country deserves.

Concerning immigration, I advocate that labor unions in all countries act in concert in order to improve environmental and labor conditions, thus making Mr. Paul's advocacy of restrictions a point rather moot.

The media at the bequest of the Federal Reserve has painted Ron Paul a nut just like they have fooled the American Peopl into all kinds of things about JFK's Murder. The Federal Reserve will not tolearte anyone in power who wants to destory them. Their oppisition just doesn't live every long after getting real power. History tells us this!

America is hated because the fake left and fake right both promote the same fascist, imperialist policies. They disagree slightly only on which groups should be targerted for repression at home or whether you should invade other countries on 'terror' grounds to impose democracy or 'humanitarian' grounds to 'save' people from themselves.

Obviously Ron Paul is evil - he wants to restore the constitution, civil liberties, (both good for yanks), bring the soldiers home, stop invading other countries (the horror), stop threatening other nations, trade with people, protect the American border while respecting other peoples! What a weirdo!

He's gone anyway. If McCain gets elected America will collapse under a war with Iran.

If Obama gets elected, he will colonise the entire African continent, watch out for a nuclear showdown with China when he tries to overthrow the Kharthoum regime.
His speechs always involve "I'm going to build schools, hospitals and houses....in Africa"(!) for a reason, Africa is the richest continent in terms of natural resources and the West needs to benefit their corporations at the expense of the poor in their own countries and to the devastation of Africans in general.

Your doomed either way........... The best of America has already been destroyed, anybody who represents it is demonised as a lunatic, the worst of America has taken over. Sad.

Innuendo and ridicule of this article are resoundingly misplaced.

Just for one matter (hosts of hosts of prejudices would deserve debunking) Ron Paul DOES NOT hold illegal immigrants responsible for all, not even most, of our welfare problems.

This is because Ron Paul explicitly includes corporate welfare (try to say this word to any modern Democrats proud of his "pro-business" stripes) and military spending (Obama's AIPAC turnaround sends his regards) into the general “welfare mentality” of “big governance”, - WHICH is the very thing he, indeed, charges with causing all our evil.

If he wants to build a protective “wall”, it is first and foremost around the FED, in oder that it may stop infecting American and global economy with usury and inflation. This article's wilfull omission of this "crank" of his portrays the bias of its author's worldview. People tempted to sympathy with such compulsory jabbing at a position more consistent than their own should rethink their strategy. For it renders them impotent to accomplish anything against the corporate enemy which they themselves, - as such political correctness is the pet disease of the left – vividly descry.

Ron Paul is not so much off the mark in chastising welfare mentality, if indeed at all.

Nationalism is not racism, and strictures against almsgiving (at the place of providing decent paying jobs and real opportunities) do not reveal the misanthropist.

Anyone left with ears and an open mind? Or are you all "group-thinkers" out there? Intrinsically adapted by remote-control?

However he did publish a racist screed. He says he had no idea what was being said under his name but he hasn't taken any action against the people who supposedly blackened his name. Sorry but any one who is basing their economic policies upon Nationalism while writing the sort of idiot drivel his magazine published is a racist. His notion of making the US a third world nation with untrammeled capitalism coupled with the racism his magazine espouses and his refusal to distance himself from the white supremists makes his positions clear. As to his desire to get US troops out of foreign countries, all I can say is that a stopped clock is right twice a day.

{Part II of reply to reply}

Obligingly, Ron Paul likewise is the (one) caller in the wilderness against commander-in-chief overreach, surveillance programs, and "unitary executive" theories as well, and you would be able to balance an (possibly, at this point) unsettled president by just electing more non-racist representatives and senators. Given we finally returned to the constitution.

We have only to bother about the return to being bothered by the crucial questions. But even that we cannot, evidently. Pathetic.

{Part I of reply to reply}

I know a thing even more frightening. Paul is fond of Austrian economist F.A. Hayek, who, in turn, has more than just a "nearness" to recently deceased Milton Friedman, who was the “ideological sponsor” for the market radicalism and corporatism that overtook with Reagan.

However, RON PAUL PUTS UP THE CRUCIAL MATTERS, where none, - really NONE - of the “electables” even ask questions. REIGN IN THE FED! I said, - a privately owned cartel, infusing our economy at its heart, without ANY effective oversight by elected people. Why do you stay mute on this? They have led us on the brink of disaster (as will unfold before our eyes, while people continue to drivel about some “war on terror”) and when the day of reckoning draws close, the sole concern of these luminaries is to bail out their cronies, the perpetrators, while handing over the masses to poverty and slavery ahead.

And we still take the cue from the media to NOT AKS naughty questions !?!?!

Charges of racism are to be taken seriously. And I do so, even though I fail to see how they are aggravated by nationalist economic policies. Do you think that globalist projects like NAFTA are balm and manna for foreigners and “non-white races”?

What you ignore is that there is a constant spew of dirt against any inconvenient persons venturing on even the bottom rungs of the power-machine. Perhaps this already accounts for your observations.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 AM on 06/15/2008

Sorry Annette that was NOT racism. It was truth. I don't care who published it.
The only thing racist is the 90% black on white crime.

And this crap about the military is just the opposite of the truth. He's for a strong military.

I hope he uses some of his money to sue this blog for saying he would dismantle it. They cannot show us anyplace where he's EVER said anything like that.

I'm a fan of satire as much as anyone (used to be a big Onion fan before they went "corporate") but this isn't even funny.

I just don't see where the word creepy applies to Ron or his followers. His followers are a large spectrum of Americans who care about our nation and the constitution. Heck, my suburban dentist even wanted to vote for him (but moved and wasn't registered in time). But apparently current "conventional wisdom" can't be questioned. Does anyone think there arn't creepy people who support any of the other pres candidates?

I'd bet more Guilliani or Romney followers are as creepy as themselves.

Whether we end up with Obama or McSame, the U.S. sheeple will learn to regret their 2008 primary votes by the end of the next 4 years. Obama is already showing his loyalty to another country and his seeming connections to Bayh pretty much seals the deal.

Say what you want about Ron Paul. At least he spoke his mind. He never flip-flopped. What you see is what you get. A true rarity in politics today. He had to know he didn't stand a chance of getting elected. In the GOP debates he was the only one to stand up and say we should get out of Iraq. I respected him for that even though I wouldn't vote for him..

It's a sad day when only the creepy citizens in our country want the government to be limited by the Constitution. Permanent campaign tactics have destroyed the souls of the two major parties. There is no longer objective truth in the new only spin to keep the sheep dizzy. Wake up America. We are getting what we deserve. Stop being Party People the credit cards are maxed out. We need real change; a constitutional government restrained by law.

what is it about personal liberty; personal freedom that people are so afraid of? why does the notion of limited government and keeping our noses out of other peoples business terrify so many sheeple?

why do you suppose ron paul received more contributions from military personal than any other candidate? what do they know that the the sheeple american public doesn't?

could it be they see through all the lies of all the bs wars they are forced to fight?

the ideas ron paul's campaign set forth are what this country was founded upon and your elected officials swore to uphold. the sheeple can't understand these concepts though. they're too busy being afraid.

Most people who lump Paul in with 'republicans' have NO idea what they are talking about because they have no grasp of the subject matter and are just arguing from partisan standpoints.

Paul is a great man, and would be a great president. We'd have our military strong again and our country out of debt. He's the only candidate who didn't go into debt as a matter of fact..

Freedom is a difficult concept, and few--as this article exemplifies--grasp it.

There is a growing movement, mostly among the young, that do get it and realize that Ron Paul's ideas really would put the country back where it should be. Slashing the Pentegon by half and ending our worldwide military presence would eliminate our financial difficulties and send correct messages to the market.

I doubt that the writer really understands what the Federal Reserve is, probably believes it is a government institution (it's not, it's privately owned).

I consider myself a liberal libertarian; i.e., one who believes in the concepts of freedom, but who also realizes that while people are equal under the law, they are not equal in opportunity and talent. A social safety net, properly constructed is a good investment. Also, some visionary endeavors require government support such as space and technology development. The market is not visionary, it is reductive.

Only idiots laugh at what they don't understand.
