Obama Clinton

This week Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are fighting hard to win support from independents and uncommitted supporters of Hillary Clinton. At a Philadelphia fundraiser, Obama shared with voters the same sentiment he shared with Clinton during their much-touted (and still quite secretive) private meeting. Obama told Hillary:

"You're the only one who knows what I've gone through and I'm the only one who knows what you've gone through."

And while many Clinton supporters and surrogates have fallen in with the Obama camp since the end of the primary, a few public defectors are making waves. The McCain camp has proudly touted one Wisconsin Democratic superdelegate who has promised to vote against Barack Obama:

In an interview, Bartoshevich expressed lingering unhappiness over the Democratic nominating process, said Clinton was treated unfairly by the party and said she has deep reservations about Obama's lack of experience and his judgment.

"I'm kind of disenfranchised," she said.

She said she planned to vote for Clinton at the convention, but in an Obama-McCain matchup in November, "I will not be voting for Obama. I will cast my vote for John McCain.

Still, to this point, Bartoshevich is the only superdelegate that both sides acknowledge has flipped sides.

Meanwhile, McCain's camp is pushing to the press a Clinton-oriented virtual town hall, as well as a list of "prominent Democratic and unaffiliated leaders" who have joined Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) in a group called 'Citizens For McCain.' In 2000, Bush had great success with a similar organization: Democrats For Bush. Of course, Ben Smith notices that the members of Citizens of McCain come up short in one respect:

What they could use: a bit more prominence. Beyond Lieberman, most are out-of-office local officials; only one, former Rep. Tim Penny of Minnesota, ever held federal office. Some are quite obscure, to wit: Commander of Newport Memorial-VFW Post 1119 Francis Harding Jr. and former State Chair of Environmentalists for Clinton-Gore 1992 Roberta Weisbrod.

And Obama is having his own luck tempting crossover voters, particularly with black conservatives. The Associated Press runs through some of the most prominent officials who are publicly wavering between McCain and Obama, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts:

J.C. Watts, a former Oklahoma congressman who once was part of the GOP House leadership, said he's thinking of voting for Obama. Watts said he's still a Republican, but he criticizes his party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them.

"And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to those things."

Bartoshevich is acting like a "woman scorned". Being a woman, I know what I'm talking about. She won't change her mind, KNOWING, it is in her best interest to do so. She's in that "I'll show you, (Barack & the DNC) mentality"'. "She's "biteing her nose to spite her face". How sad.

Most Hillary supporters need to understand that it was the GOP that destroyed Hillary from the very beginning. The GOP with Rove leaked press stories and information to drive up Hillary’s negatives even before she announced her candidacy. The GOP thought she would be the Democratic nominee and needed to destroy her reputation and define her image. That is why the initial press was so aligned against Hillary initially.
Until women as a group start to fight back against this kind of stuff they will always lose and be thought of as second class.

I'm well aware of the GOP tactics. What I find disturbing is that so-called democrats were willing to spew the same crap in order to prop up their candidate of choice. It's the main reason why I am no longer a democrat. Their behavior during this campaign lead me to believe that they hold no moral ground over the republicans. They are all the same and I have a strong disdain for hypocrites. Good luck in November.

I agree with you. I am no longer a Democrat either, or rather the "Democratic" party is no longer Democratic.

I like how NObama supporters like to lecture me about what I must understand and must do. Sorry, folks, the United States doesn't work like the "Democratic" party. We don't have to follow what the good ol' boys tell us to do.

Now is the time for Hillary to live up to the promise she made in her concession speech. She can encourage her supporters to vote for the issues that both Clinton and Obama are in agreement with (about 95% of them). Why is she quiet while McCain is trying to steal her supporters from Obama for all the wrong reasons (issues)? Is she waiting for direction from the Obama campaign?

They must have some software problems with regards to managing the flow of comments; just the other day there was a backlog in another thread (my long-as-usual post included) and after a few hours they were all counted as having been posted but in fact, there was no sign of them - they had vanished into thin air. The other annoying thing is when you report a problem, you don't get any kind of acknowledgement, so you don't really know whether they got it or whether it was swallowed by a giant virtual black hole. Either way, i would change whoever does the maintenance of these pages...

This Debra Bartoshevich is a bit out there. I still have a problem understanding this disenfranchisement argument and how this is somehow Obama's fault. This person really needs to examine the issues and vote on the issues not the person. It amazes me that people like this actually have some political power. So ridiculous.

"I'm kind of disenfranchised," she said Bartoshevich.

Come on, Democrats, make her disenfranchisement complete. Kick her from the party. Hillary was treated fairly.

Why do you (the writer of the story), refer to Lieberman as "ID", or "independent democrat? Nice job passing along his spin. There is no such party. If someone has no party affiliation, the correct term is "I". Just because he calls himself that doesn't make it true. He was run out of the Democratic party. We've all got our biases, but as a reporter, at least try to be accurate.

Timothy Penny has been a Corporate lobbyist since leaving the Congress. In his years in the House, Penny was the consummate DINO....a DLC conservative whom the House GOP could always count on in a tight vote. Penny was a successful pol who had token Republican opposition because the GOP had a better congressman in Penny.

Penny's votes with the GOP were on economic issues that supported the Corporatist stranglehold on the working class he purported to support. On social issues, Penny was also a man who did no harm and did no good to further progressive agendae.

I am never surprised when DINO or DLC Democrats commit the ultimate political treason....they skirt their betrayal every day they succeed in becoming the Trojan Horse in the Camp. I have more respect for the now former congressmen who actually switched to the Republican party. Official traitors like Lieberman and Miller and Tauzin in the House (a Democratic chair from LA who actually was able to retain his chairmanship as a Republican in 1995).

I am gone until I take care of some projects. Have enjoyed the exchanges with some passionate, intelligent, and funny people out there. Look forward to knocking McCain trying to win my state, I hope you feel the same. Will check in on special occasioned which point I started to rethink my vote. I will not support anyone who will condone apartheid in any form or fashion. And of course Tim Russets. As Sen. Hillary Clinton's potential of securing the presidential nomination went from sure-bet, Mr. Abeam needs to stay true to himself about change! If he is going they're a plant, their roots are as deep as those of Gingham Wood. skills. It's "jump on the bandwagon everyone! As the man who guided (and pressured and arm-twisted) Democrats to historic congressional gains in 2006.

Bartoshevich is probably a racist. It doesn't make sense to vote for McCain over Obama when Obama and Hillary Clinton's policies are virtually the same. McCain is another 4 years of Bush, she was a Clinton supporter and now she supports McCain, against the wishes of Hillary Clinton herself? Please..

This woman is a racist plain a simple (Another Geraldine Ferraro/Harriet Christian), its not logical for a former Clinton supporter to vote for McCain over Obama when he and Clinton are so much the same in policy. It can only be explained through illogical hatred, and that hatred is racism.

The media should cover this fact more, because come on... we all know thats the main reason for many of the defections. No more sugar coating the ugly facts, the American people can take it.

Obama is wasting his time trying to win over these people, they WILL vote for McCain. They might say in public because they are mad Hillary lost, but the fact of the matter deep down they are voting for him because he is white and Obama is black.

Thank God not all Hillary Clinton supporters are not like this.'

Well what title do you want to assign to black people who don't think he's the best candidate? I may feel obligated to vote for him come November in order to make history, but I do not believe that he is the better candidate.

Yes, all Hillary supporters, who dislike Obama for any number of reasons, must be racists. Of coruse, no Obama supporters can be sexist, even if they jump up and down and celebrate her come-uppins or if they insist that putting her on the ticket would emasculate Obama. No, no, no, we must never discuss sexism, unless it is to say that we are proudly sexist -- that is, "traditional." No, Hillary, it doesn't "take a village to raise a child": as Obama recently said "It takes a family" (headed by a father) to raise a child.

"It takes a family" (headed by a father) to raise a child.

Well said. Even Hillary knows this, that's why she stayed with Bill. Its not required but its the best way.

Btw I made a typo. I meant to say "Thank God not all Hillary Clinton supporters are like this."

Obviously you knew i made one but want to take me out of context, but thats fine.

Feminazi.

You all are an embarrassment to the female gender.

Thanks for diminishing the roll of the father once again. (sarcasm)

Feminism means equality not dominance. Get that through your thick skulls.

This is why Hillary lost.

I hope Obama never puts her on the ticket.

A bit of context:

Most on this list, above (including Roberta Weisbrod, Ph.D., of New York's "Partnership for Sustainable Ports" fame) are just just regular old folk, not so different from my newspaper carrier, the dog catcher, the country coroner, the mayor of my small town, all of whom have the right to vote for whoever they jolly well please.

As for the 2 notables on the list:

Wisconsin delegate, Debra Bartoshevich, was stripped of her delegate position last night, by unanimous vote of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, because she was in violation of the DNC rule that requires delegates to support the party's nominee and not any other candidate. Bartoshevich knew of this rule when she signed on to be a delegate. She has been replaced by an alternate Clinton delegate.

Rep. Tim Penny of Minnesota (former Democrat, who has been an Independent for years) DID NOT even vote for a Democrat in 2004! Penny refers to the Bush-Cheney lies, which deceived American into going to war, as mere "policy differences." And, in his argument against impeachment of Bush-Cheney, he compared these lies to Nixon's illegal bombing in Cambodia, deeming them "policy stuff on war" (

Dixiecrats were never Democrats in the philosophical sense. Their allegiance was to a pre-civil war definition that stated that Lincoln was a Republican. Today, nine out of ten are Republicans.

Superdelegates from the Hillary camp are willing to vote for John McCain. McCain has prostituted himself fully to the neocon corporatists who rule his party and nation. His "maverick" status is illusionary. McCain will govern as an archconservative to prove his gravitas to the Corporate oligarchs.
He will forever remove the centre left majority on the Supreme Court, and help defeat Roe v Wade as a federal protection and allow a patchwork of states where a woman's right to choose will be determined by how much gas they can afford to travel to a free state or a red state coat hanger abortionist. McCain will further empoverish you and your nation. He will give the trillionaires and billionaires further tax cuts and give the war profiteers billions without end.

Yes, my womyn friends, please punish Obama for Clinton's loss, and remember.....if President Obama wins, he will remember YOU....and if Senator McCain wins, WE WILL BLAME WOMYN LIKE YOU AND YOUR WISH FOR THE NEXT ELECTION WILL BE ILLUSIONARY TOO.

I have to disagree with Obama when he says know one else knows but the two of them what they have been through. Does he think they are the only two that have ever run for President. He needs to stop this groveling over Hillary because he doesn't need to and it won't do any good any how. Hillary has been out of the picture for a week now and it has been wonderful and I don't think anyone has missed her. Obama needs to show that he can campagin on his own and win on his own. If he picks Hillary as his running mate I and my husband will not vote for him. I don't want the Clinton's back in the WH. We are voting for Obama for change not to go back to the 90's.

I would never ever vote for McCain and I have always respected Obama, his people however need to take a page from his book and learn how to be gracious
