Obama Clinton

This week Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are fighting hard to win support from independents and uncommitted supporters of Hillary Clinton. At a Philadelphia fundraiser, Obama shared with voters the same sentiment he shared with Clinton during their much-touted (and still quite secretive) private meeting. Obama told Hillary:

"You're the only one who knows what I've gone through and I'm the only one who knows what you've gone through."

And while many Clinton supporters and surrogates have fallen in with the Obama camp since the end of the primary, a few public defectors are making waves. The McCain camp has proudly touted one Wisconsin Democratic superdelegate who has promised to vote against Barack Obama:

In an interview, Bartoshevich expressed lingering unhappiness over the Democratic nominating process, said Clinton was treated unfairly by the party and said she has deep reservations about Obama's lack of experience and his judgment.

"I'm kind of disenfranchised," she said.

She said she planned to vote for Clinton at the convention, but in an Obama-McCain matchup in November, "I will not be voting for Obama. I will cast my vote for John McCain.

Still, to this point, Bartoshevich is the only superdelegate that both sides acknowledge has flipped sides.

Meanwhile, McCain's camp is pushing to the press a Clinton-oriented virtual town hall, as well as a list of "prominent Democratic and unaffiliated leaders" who have joined Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) in a group called 'Citizens For McCain.' In 2000, Bush had great success with a similar organization: Democrats For Bush. Of course, Ben Smith notices that the members of Citizens of McCain come up short in one respect:

What they could use: a bit more prominence. Beyond Lieberman, most are out-of-office local officials; only one, former Rep. Tim Penny of Minnesota, ever held federal office. Some are quite obscure, to wit: Commander of Newport Memorial-VFW Post 1119 Francis Harding Jr. and former State Chair of Environmentalists for Clinton-Gore 1992 Roberta Weisbrod.

And Obama is having his own luck tempting crossover voters, particularly with black conservatives. The Associated Press runs through some of the most prominent officials who are publicly wavering between McCain and Obama, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts:

J.C. Watts, a former Oklahoma congressman who once was part of the GOP House leadership, said he's thinking of voting for Obama. Watts said he's still a Republican, but he criticizes his party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them.

"And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to those things."

Wick Allison past publisher of National Review, America's premier conservatives magazine describes his support by pointing to his wife who wrote: "He speaks with candor and elegance against the kind of politics that have become so dispiriting and for the kind of America I would like to see. I find Mr. Obama, as a man, to be prudent, thoughtful, and courageous. His life story embodies the conservative values that go to the core of my beliefs."

Jeffrey Hart, senior editor at National Review, wrote for Nixon and Reagan. likes Obama's rhetorical acumen, that Obama couches his language in uplifting unity.

David, son of Milton Friedman, the economist whose laissez-faire ideas informed Reagan and Thatcher, sees Obama as a vessel for his father's cause and is convinced of Obama's sympathy for school vouchers.

Larry Hunter helped write the Contract with America and says the greater importance is to "scramble the political deck, break up old alliances, and bring odd bedfellows together in a new coalition,." The Republicans as a "rotting carcass with a few decrepit leaders stumbling around like zombies handcuffed to a corpse."

Blogger Dorothy King outed herself. Awkward for her, she wondered, "Do I now, as a newly minted liberal elitist, serve Chablis? Or would any old chardonnay do? Am I even to admit to going to the supermarket, or should I pretend to only go to the local Farmers' Market?"

Ya' gotta admit... this is pretty funny stuff -- disaffected Republicans threatening to vote Obama, crazy Dems threatening to vote McStrange.

... which just goes to show you can never account for the perennially insane electoral bathtub ring.

McBush has a huge problem going into the general election. We polls worse than Bush did against Kerry in every single demographic group, especially woman.

"Angry Clinton Women ♥ McCain?
By FRANK RICH

TEN years ago John McCain had to apologize for regaling a Republican audience with a crude sexual joke about Hillary and Chelsea Clinton and Janet Reno. Last year he had to explain why he didn’t so much as flinch when a supporter asked him on camera, “How do we beat the bitch?” But these days Mr. McCain just loves the women.

How heartwarming. You’d never guess that Mr. McCain is a fierce foe of abortion rights or that he voted to terminate the federal family-planning program that provides breast-cancer screenings. You’d never know that his new campaign blogger, recruited from The Weekly Standard, had shown his genuine affection for Mrs. Clinton earlier this year by portraying her as a liar and whiner and by piling on with a locker-room jeer after she’d been called a monster. “Tell us something we don’t know,” he wrote.

New polls show Mr. Obama opening up a huge lead among female voters — beating Mr. McCain by 13 percentage points in the Gallup and Rasmussen polls and by 19 points in the latest Wall Street Journal-NBC News survey. How huge is a 13- to 19-percentage-point lead? John Kerry won women by only 3 points, Al Gore by 11."

Bartoshevich is probably a racist. It doesn't make sense to vote for McCain over Obama when Obama and Hillary Clinton's policies are virtually the same. McCain is another 4 years of Bush, she was a Clinton supporter and now she supports McCain, against the wishes of Hillary Clinton herself? Please..

This woman is a racist plain a simple (Another Geraldine Ferraro/Harriet Christian), its not logical for a former Clinton supporter to vote for McCain over Obama when he and Clinton are so much the same in policy. It can only be explained through illogical hatred, and that hatred is racism.

The media should cover this fact more, because come on... we all know thats the main reason for many of the defections. No more sugar coating the ugly facts, the American people can take it.

Obama is wasting his time trying to win over these people, they WILL vote for McCain. They might say in public because they are mad Hillary lost, but the fact of the matter deep down they are voting for him because he is white and Obama is black.

Thank God not all Hillary Clinton supporters are not like this.

The DNC, stacked largely with Clinton supporters, agreed on the rules for the primaries a year ago. Harold Ickes, among them.

It's more than just a bit disingenuous for Clinton supporters to be complaining about those rules, now.

Another great article from Frank Rich. He explains the false narrative of the fractured Democratic Party. Like myself and many other on this blog we know McBush is the candidate having problems exciting his base. In fact Obama's 6 point lead in the NBC/WSJ poll is two points higher than Bush did with the same pollsters at any time in the 2004 election.

Why are we not hearing about McCain's involvement in the Keating 5. I had my little two bit savings, as a widow and mother of three. in Lincoln Savings here in California. Keating bought Lincoln Savings and started offering astronomical interest rates to invest in his savings accounts. I was lucky enough not to fall for the "deal" which blew up and many of my friends lost a lot of money they could not afford to lose and then the taxpayers ended up bailing out all the customers of Lincoln Savings, among other banks.
I believe McCain was indicted for this, but never suffered any other consequences and on top of all this, he now has ex-Sen. Gram as his chief financial adviser - the person responsible for the subprime debacle.

Barack Obama needs to start broadcasting a list of the over 130 times John McCain has voted against women's rights. He has voted against funding any kind of birth control education, he has said he will promote the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He has voted against funding condom's or birth control pills in third world countries where HIV is rampant, and on and on and on. His list of votes has been spelled out on the Randi Rhodes show. If this doesn't convince most of the women who voted for Sen. Clinton, then they will be voting against their own best interest.

When we donate money to the DNC does some of that trickle down to local politicians? If so then we should write the DNC and tell them to cut this Bartoshevich person off. She does not have a right to the party of $ if she is not going to support our candidate and say so publicly.

Well... having a party that allows people to express different ideas is not necessarily a bad thing. Forcing people to "tow" the party line is a little fascistic. Political parties should not dictate to a persons conscious. Yeah, it would be nice if people chose NOT to be devise in this of all years. It's a thought.

Uh, the purpose of a political party or group is to support a SPECIFIC set of ideas and values. It is not a social organization. People don't join the Republican Party because they like women with big hair. People don't join the Democratic Party because they find donkeys cute.

It's the ideas, stupid.

This is also why I don't support bi-partisanship. Other than stopping invasions and reducing crime, there really should be nothing the left and the right agree on. If they do, it's BS.

Um- if you don't support the platform and the values expressed therein, don't vote in the primary and don't call yourself a Dem.

As BD said, it's not a social club. We have a wide tent but we have basic values and you need to share them or get off the bus.

Civil RIghts, Equal rts for women and gays and everyone, economic justice, stuff like that. Oh yeah, anti war too.

Both parties have their "rebels", "turncoats" or whatever you want to call them. I would not want to pressure the DNC to cut off funding for any Democrat because I don't particularly want some Democrats to jump ship and become Republicans.

But I also share your feelings about Dems who won't back our presidential candidate. So here's what I came up with for myself. About a year ago I cut the DNC off entirely. When they call me for money I politely decline (well, sometimes not quite so politiely). Instead, I donate directly to the candidates I feel comfortable supporting. Currently there are no Republicans among them, but I wouldn't rule it out if a moderate or liberal Republican were running against a conservative Democrat (as if).

Right now all my contributions are going directly to Obama's campaign because I think that helping elect him is the single most important thing I can do. Hopefully he will win, and then in 2010 I will target my contributions to congressional candidates I like who are in tough races against neo-con Republicans.

Personally I find this a lot more worthwhile and satisfying than giving to the DNC which has let us down so many times. This way I don't have to worry about my hard-earned dollars going to candidates who have supported Bush more often than they've opposed him.

I read that Wisconsin Democrats are asking the DNC's credentials committee to refuse to seat Debra Bartoshevich (the delegate who balked) at the national convention scheduled for August in Denver, CO.

The Wisconsin Dems said Bartoshevich violated a DNC rule requiring delegates to support the party's nominee and not any other candidate. I am no expert on DNC delegate rules but I looked at a version of the rules that is online and the provision that I think applies has a March 1, 2008, cutoff for the DNC Secretary to confirm the names of "unpledged delegates" unless any of the delegates have "publicly expressed support for the election of, or has endorsed, the presidential candidate of another party." Since McCain is only a presumptive candidate and the March date has passed, I am just wondering if the decision to "unseat" this delegate was strictly by the rules.

I also read that the convention host committee in Denver has not met fundraising deadlines set by the DNC (the DNC says they are short by $15 million or so) and is canceling media walkthrough and welcoming events for convention delegates left and right. Is there going to be a Democratic National Convention in August? If not, has anyone told the delegates? Has anyone told Denver? Also, if there is no convention, how can any delegate be "seated" or "unseated?"

I saw some idiots on the Daily Show calling themselves "Women For Fair Politics." They purport to be Hillary supporters who will vote for McCain instead of Obama because of the "sexism" in the primary. I think they're just Republican plants---what self-respecting woman would vote for someone who's been anti-choice for centuries and called his own wife a c*nt?

Actually even a Democratic Superdelagate has only one vote in the General election.. I am a former unsuperdelagate Republican and I plan to vote for Obama as do many of my moderate Republican friends. McCain has left the moderate stance he has espoused for years and is now sucking up to the worst Republican President we have had in the entire history of our country. Bush may even be the most corrupt also. Anyway thought you would all like to know there are droves of us moderate Republicans who have re-registered and we will happily vote for Obama.
