Obama Clinton

This week Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are fighting hard to win support from independents and uncommitted supporters of Hillary Clinton. At a Philadelphia fundraiser, Obama shared with voters the same sentiment he shared with Clinton during their much-touted (and still quite secretive) private meeting. Obama told Hillary:

"You're the only one who knows what I've gone through and I'm the only one who knows what you've gone through."

And while many Clinton supporters and surrogates have fallen in with the Obama camp since the end of the primary, a few public defectors are making waves. The McCain camp has proudly touted one Wisconsin Democratic superdelegate who has promised to vote against Barack Obama:

In an interview, Bartoshevich expressed lingering unhappiness over the Democratic nominating process, said Clinton was treated unfairly by the party and said she has deep reservations about Obama's lack of experience and his judgment.

"I'm kind of disenfranchised," she said.

She said she planned to vote for Clinton at the convention, but in an Obama-McCain matchup in November, "I will not be voting for Obama. I will cast my vote for John McCain.

Still, to this point, Bartoshevich is the only superdelegate that both sides acknowledge has flipped sides.

Meanwhile, McCain's camp is pushing to the press a Clinton-oriented virtual town hall, as well as a list of "prominent Democratic and unaffiliated leaders" who have joined Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) in a group called 'Citizens For McCain.' In 2000, Bush had great success with a similar organization: Democrats For Bush. Of course, Ben Smith notices that the members of Citizens of McCain come up short in one respect:

What they could use: a bit more prominence. Beyond Lieberman, most are out-of-office local officials; only one, former Rep. Tim Penny of Minnesota, ever held federal office. Some are quite obscure, to wit: Commander of Newport Memorial-VFW Post 1119 Francis Harding Jr. and former State Chair of Environmentalists for Clinton-Gore 1992 Roberta Weisbrod.

And Obama is having his own luck tempting crossover voters, particularly with black conservatives. The Associated Press runs through some of the most prominent officials who are publicly wavering between McCain and Obama, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts:

J.C. Watts, a former Oklahoma congressman who once was part of the GOP House leadership, said he's thinking of voting for Obama. Watts said he's still a Republican, but he criticizes his party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them.

"And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to those things."

What do you call a Democrat who fails to vote for the nominee?

A traitor to the party.

As Fran Dreschler pointed out today on Air America, Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are virtually the same person in respect to their policies and their voting record, and both represent the values and vision of the Democratic Party. Although she was a staunch supporter of Senator Clinton, she said it makes no sense at all for the Clinton supporters to now vote for John McCain or to forfeit their vote by staying home, because they will in effect be voting against everything that Senator Clinton and women in general stand for. Therefore, my conclusion is that the Democrats who fail to vote for the Democratic nominee::
1. Are only Democrats in name, but do not uphold the values of the party nor are they concerned about the future of our country
2. Never supported Senator Clinton, the person; but supported what she symbolized for them and thereby only used her to serve their purpose
3. Since the only political difference between them (except for their initial stance on the Iraq war) is that she's a woman and he's a black man, then the only reason they will not vote for him is because he's a man and/or because he's not white, which reveals more about them than it does about Senator Obama

I believe that our party will be united, with or without them; and I also believe that they are a fringe minority who probably wouldn't have supported the Democratic Party anyway.

kevenseven, I am forced to declare a party, unfairly, to vote in the primaries. Who am I a traitor to if I do not follow party lines? Just asking.

Question: Why would you vote for a candidate without looking at what the party they represent?

That would be like me voting for Mc-Cain without looking at the Repulsives and seeing that, for the most part, they stand for stuff that I cannot.

I'm sorry. You seem to be under the impression that you have a right to vote in the primary of a party. Who gave you that idea?

The rule of choosing a nominee of a party is controlled almost exclusively by the party.

The party could have the Chairman pick a name from a hat. It would be every bit as legal and valid as what we have now.

Personally, I don't see why anybody but Democrats should have a say in the naming of our nominee. If you don't want to be part of the group, why should you get to say who the group's nominee is?

I suggest you look over the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I don't think you will find any wording saying that you have a right to participate in my party's nominating process.

And any Dem who fails to vote for the nominee is a traitor to the party.

Oh, a political party could rule that only caucuses would be valid, and that only party members who could prove that they had not missed a vote in ten years and had given 25 hours to the party could participate.

And there is not one damn thing anyone could do to change that. No court, no judge could do anything about it.

You do not have a right to participate. Participation is purely by privilege and suffrage of the party.

So yeah, if you want to have a say in who the nominee is, I think you should be a committed member of the party who will vote for the nominee regardless of who your preference in the primary was.

Ummm I do believe Keven is correct here.

If you are not a Dem you ought not to be voting in our primary - at all.

And if you are a Dem you owe it to the party to vote for the Nominee.

Pretty Simple, really.

Keven-

Why do you want to vote in a primary if you do not support a party enough to b registered in it?

And if you do belong to a party, that means you support it's ideals and values.

So if you don't vote for your party's nominee, you are a traitor to the party you have claimed to support by registering for it.

Unless, of course, you're part of "operation chaos."

Reading through the posts, I am once again reminded of what sore winners Obama supporters are.

In the past, many runners-up took their fight to the convention, used their delegates to leverage decisions on the platform, or even -- heaven forbid -- slip into the VP slot. Apparently all Obma supporters want from HRC and her people is complete capitulation. Basically their message is " STFU and vote for us!"

Charming.

Exactly. Hillary would have been just fine as far as a typical Democratic candidate goes and although I like Obama more, I would have supported her had she won the nomination - her policies are in line with our party.

I can respect the more reasonable Hillary supporters who still care about the issues enough to stick with our party. But DUDE - what do you think about the sore Hillary supporters who will support McCain and screw our country over it? Many republicans vote against their interests out of ignorance on the ISSUES. But to damn the issues out of spite? Seriously!!! Grow up. McCain will actively work against womans rights and Obama will work FOR them. And that's that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:05 AM on 06/15/2008

I think the HRC voters really need to get over themselves. What I really, really wanted in 2004 was for Al Gore to run again. I was physically sick when I learned he was not going to be the Democratic nominee after four years of utter disappointment. Whether he ran or not, it was the same feeling that HRC supporters have now. You go through an extended period of mourning and then you buck up and like I did, you work hard for the Democratic nominee, which in my case was John Kerry. I didn't vote for him in the primaries, I had voted for John Edward. I still didn't get the person I wanted two choices later. IT DID NOT MATTER. In a primary you fall in love, in a general election you fall in line. You support the candidate and whoever they put in their administration and for their VP. If you care at all about this country, stop thinking of yourself for God's sake. This country and the world's future is at stake.

I was a Hillary voter but as time went on and Hillary started doing things that was beneath her. Maybe she got really bad advice and somehow it seem as if she stop doing what was right. But it was a long race and the media was relentless. I never blame Obama for what was happening. The media made it Hillary vs Obama. They both fell into the trap. A lot of times I felt Obama could have spoken up when the media was being so unfair to Hillary but he never added to it. I choose Hillary and wish I could say that she did the same thing but it wouldn't be true. She became desperate and when the media turn their slime machine on Obama, Hillary did add on. And that made me very sad because I thought that she was smarter than that. I guess the turning point for me was when she said mcbush had more experience than Obama. In my world, that is like turning on your family. You may have a problem with someone in your family but you never speak badly of them to the enemy. Its called loyalty. But everyone makes mistake and maybe now they can truly come together and make America great again.

When was the last time that the dems faught it out until the convention and then gone on to win in the general election??... It was a long time ago.

Taking it to the convention will only do one thing and that is to kill our chances in November. I say this because if HIllary still ran until Aug all of her voters will just stick in her camp for months and the anger that the two sides would have would fester for months. Then when the convention came everyone would hate everyone and Hillary would still loose to Obama.

Then after all this festering Obama would have to pull the party together in 2months which would be impossible.

So why postpone her loss for 3 months and give John McCain a 3 month free ride?

Well well... ain't life funny or it's coming full circle. Now it looks like team Obama needs Clinton after all. Hillary is starting to look more and more like a vice presidential candidate. You people on this site fail to forget that most (if not all) of you represent the most liberal of our population and their are a whole lot of people out their that are not of the same mind set as you. Mr. Obama cannot just win with your support he will need a coalition of voters.

I even notice the other day that he was pandering to the Israelis at the expense of the Palestinians at which point I started to rethink my vote. I will not support anyone who will condone apartheid in any form or fashion. Mr. Obama needs to stay true to himself about change! If he is going to go on out of the Bush play book of politics then I can just stay home. I was under the impression that Mr. Obama was about being fair and just!

Now with all of that I am sure most of you will try to make some attempt to why Obama should not pick Clinton but the way things are going, it looks like he might need her.

For those who think McCain is preferable to Obama, I have three words: The Supreme Court. If Kerry had won in '04 Alito and Roberts would not be there. If McCain wins in '08, who's next? Think of this latest decision and ask yourself: What if the next president appoints 2 or 3 Justices? How many of the 5 who carried the day would be replaced by more like Roberts or Alito? There unfortunately is much more at stake than even seriously disaffected voters can ignore.

Ms. Bartoshevich,

Voting for McCain because you feel Hillary was not treated fairly makes no sense... unless of course you are discovering that you have always like McCain’s views best... better even than Hillary's.

If you really do favor Hillary's views, why would you vote against the one remaining candidate that has views that are most like Hillary's views??? Unless... perhaps... you were favoring Hillary JUST because she is a woman, and your a woman... If that is the case, THEN YOU ARE A SEXIST!!! How ironic... I'll bet you think Hillary was the victim of sexism.

Your Momma's so fat that when she got hit by a bus, she turned around and yelled, "You boys better stop throwing rocks!"

Liberal-minded women who are contemplating a vote for McCain, or staying home, need only look at his record. McCain might be pandering to us, now, but he has voted against women's issues through his career (voted against insurance coverage for birth control, is adamently opposed to Roe vs Wade, etc). I won't focus on his personal life, although people like Bartoshevic - who cite Obama's pastor as reason for wariness - should take a good, thoughtful look at how McCain has treated women in his life, and who he has associated with. The election wasn't perfect, the candidates aren't perfect, but it is clear who has the better record for women - and that is NOT McCain; not by a mile.

The supporters of Mrs. Bill Clinton are NOT "liberal-minded. They are estrogen minded, and have no interest in issues.

If they agreed, even with Clinton's OWN views, they couldn't possible consider McCain, or writing in HRC, or not voting, or anything that will help McCain.

These people were never about ideas; they're about genitals.

All the Reepers would have to do is continuously raise all of the negative things she said about 0 during the primaries and ask, "Is she telling the truth now, or was she telling the truth then?"

She'll be back in the Senate chamber soon.

I'll bank on it at Bear Stearns. Oh wait, they just failed primarily because of Bill Clinton's reapeal of the Glass-Steagel Act,
