Mobster wisdom tells us never to bring a knife to a gun fight. But what does political wisdom say about bringing a gun to a knife fight?

That's exactly what Barack Obama said he would do to counter Republican attacks "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun," Obama said at a Philadelphia fundraiser Friday night. "Because from what I understand folks in Philly like a good brawl. I've seen Eagles fans."

If McCain said it he would be called a warmonger and a gun lover.

I'll let you in on a little secret: He already is called as a warmonger. It's his backing of bush's policies that gives him that image.

"If a terrorist brings a bomb, we bring a white flag!"

The only weapon the GOP needs is for Obama to speak off script. He implodes all by himself.

Yeah, thats why Chicago's mayor is sooo much against guns (for regular folks).

That way only his aldermen pals and politicos will be armed.

I was actually quite pleased with this speech. Although it was metaphorical, it addresses an issue very dear to me. Over fifty years ago, when I joined the NRA as a life member, it was the National RIFLE Association, not the National Republican association. Our goal was similar to the original charter of the Boy Scouts. To teach young people to be responsible for their own actions; to learn to use firearms in a safe and, if not expert, at least qualified manner. During the last century and, sometimes, even now, prople have to grow their own food and hunt their own meat. And They must, by numerous rulings of the Supreme and lower courts, be ultimately responsible for their own defense and that of their families. The police cannot be everywhere.

So I am happy that Obama used the word gun in the context of defending oneself from harm; and I am utterly disgusted with the NRA for continuing to brand Obama an anti-gun Clintonite who will confiscate America's firearms. He won't. The simple fact is that the millions of us who own and use them professionally, simply won't obey a law like that and everyone knows it. Forty states now allow QUALIFIED private citizens to carry concealed firearms.

While Saddam Hussein was not a nice guy, During his reign, Baghdad was one of the safest cities in the world for tourists, yet every male carried an automatic weapon if he chose to do so.

"I intend to post up John McCain every chance I get."

The best line of the campaign so far.

"I intend to post up John McCain every chance I get."

Obama said that to Jimmy Kimmel. How can the repugnicans spin that?

I was laughing at that image when he said it!

"Barack Obama"s call for "new politics" is officially over. In just 24 hours, Barack Obama attacked one of America"s pioneering women CEOs, rejected a series of joint bipartisan town halls, and said that if there"s a political knife fight, he"d bring a gun," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement."

In the first place, it's the wall street urinal, a poopert outlet. In the second place, I would like to call that "genius" tucker "out of" bounds. Third, these people are not very intelligent.

It is lost upon some that the call for new politics concerns the electorate not being duped. It does not concern attack absent response; Obama gives up Johnson due to conflict of interest, put Fiorina on the grill now and roll her over the briquettes of microscopic analysis. The town hall issue is simple. Never show up to a house known to be owned and occupied by a hostile who has an MO of fixing the game to favor him. One of the motivating factors behind a lot of the racism is the denial of Barack Obama his manhood. Daddy McCain made a proposal and Jr. is expected to step to the quick, to fall in line with daddies" proposal. What smooth balls those must be to assume that was going to happen. Barack Obama said, I will meet you sir because it is in the interest of the country, but it will be a neutral field, with neutral refs, and agreed upon rules. When one intends a trap, they do not appreciate a man, or an adult to point out their mischief or redefinition of the meaning of daddy. As for the knife and gun "thang", metaphor is needed where straight talk gone crooked seeks to intimidate. The gun and knife of decency, the intercontinental ballistic missile of superior organization, and the vaporizer of an idea whose time has come as an undeniable wave of mass realization that we cannot afford tyranny or fascism, these are descriptive metaphors.

The Republicans are so stupid!

This isn't the "Politics of Fear/" It's the "Politics of Brian DePalma!" Didn't they ever see "The Untouchables?"

Sean Connery?

"That's the Chicago Way."??

As usual, Idiots!

Thank you Southrnbelle. I really was wondering if everybody firing back on this comment on the WSJ were total pop culture morons. Of course all he was doing was riffing off "The Untouchables" movie, and letting people know he was going to back down to any smear attacks. interesting too that David Mamet, who wrote the screenplay (incredibly historically inaccurate, but an entertaining movie) is himself originally from Chicago. A double-whammy of Midwestern toughness.

Don't forget, sometimes the most lethal weapon in a political fight is a cream pie to the face! And the more public ridicule is, the more effective it is. And believe me, there are a lot of balloons carried by John McCain.that need puncturing!

Fair warning. This time we fight back.

Regarding the gun comment: I have it from reliable sources that what Obama really meant to say was that if they bring a knife we will bring PHASERS. The idea was to stun McCain further, since he has already proven susceptible to being stunned by the campaign process.

As a gun-totin Leftist former Marine, I think it's about time we Democrats drive the vermin back to their gated communities to experience siege for the next 40 years.
Since the candidates from our Party are invariably softies, the nut job drooling grunts have convinced themselves they are the chosen people and their reps are the draft dodger-the deserter-and the prisoner.........hmmmmm.
