WASHINGTON — Joe Lieberman is fast becoming the Democrats' public enemy No. 1.

The four-term Connecticut senator, who came tantalizingly close to being Al Gore's vice president in 2000, not only has been campaigning for his pal, presumed Republican nominee John McCain, now he's publicly criticizing the Democrats' standard-bearer, Barack Obama. Lieberman has strayed before, most notably switching from Democrat to independent in 2006 to hold onto his Senate seat after a Democratic primary loss.

But the latest betrayal has upset Democrats, who often answer in clipped but polite tones when asked about Lieberman. The reason: The independent still caucuses with the Democrats on most issues except the Iraq war, and he holds their slim political majority in his hands.

"There's a commonly held hope that he's not going to be transformed into an attack dog for Republicans," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., an Obama supporter.

Lieberman has wasted no time in questioning Obama's positions on Iran and Israel, two topics on which Lieberman and McCain agree. Just one day after Obama clinched his party's nomination, Lieberman joined Republicans on a McCain campaign teleconference call assailing Obama following his foreign policy address to a leading Jewish group.

Lieberman accused Obama of blaming U.S. policies for "essentially sort of strengthening" Iran.

"If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state."

Later that day, during a budget vote in the Senate, Obama led Lieberman to a corner of the Senate floor for a pointed private conversation. Without elaborating, Obama told reporters the chat was about politics. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had a similar private conversation with Lieberman.

For his part, Lieberman said he assured Obama he would avoid personal attacks.

"I said, and we agreed, that any time I get out there mostly I'm going to be talking positively about John McCain _ and anytime I would take issue with Barack Obama, it would never be personal because I have the highest regard for him personally," he said.

Still, Democrats were irked. Lieberman seemed to be breaking new ground _ shifting gears from simply promoting McCain to taking shots at Obama.

"I'm glad that Barack Obama had a direct conversation with Joe," Sen. Dick Durbin, Obama's fellow Illinois senator, told reporters. "I hope that Joe will realize that even though he's a friend of John McCain's and feels differently on the war, there are so many other issues Barack stands for that have been a part of Joe's career."

Lieberman's Connecticut colleague, Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, said he's heard McCain talk about keeping a civil tone to the campaign.

"It might be a good message for him to convey to his supporters," said Dodd, also an Obama supporter.

Obama had backed Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. After he lost to Ned Lamont, an anti-war candidate, Lieberman defied party leaders and ran as an independent in the general election. Leading Democrats _ Obama, Dodd and Kerry among them _ then backed Lamont. Lieberman was re-elected with support from the GOP, including praise from the White House and fundraising help from prominent Republicans.

Oddly, Lieberman befriended and dispensed advice to Obama when the Illinois senator arrived in Washington in 2005.

"We have established a very good relationship," Lieberman says. "I have a lot of affection for him."

Call it Lieberman's version of tough love.

The Connecticut lawmaker is willing to speak at the Republican convention this summer if McCain asks. He also has been mentioned as a potential McCain running mate.

Democrats have reason to tolerate Lieberman's actions. If he were to caucus with the GOP, the balance of power in the narrowly divided Senate would slip away, especially with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., battling brain cancer. Democrats need Lieberman to maintain their 51-49 Senate majority.

Beyond Iraq, Lieberman tends to vote with Democrats on major issues.

"Joe and I have known each other 40 years," said Dodd. "On almost every issue, Joe is a mainstream Democrat."

There is speculation that if Democrats bolster their Senate majority this fall, they could seek payback by stripping Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship.

While there's no serious talk afoot about punishing Lieberman, Kerry said, "I can't tell you what happens next year."

Knowing what we know now, what amazes me is that he ran as a Democrat for VP and, for a change in the bogus Florida vote, would have been a hearbeat away from the Presidency .

How dumb would that have been?

Since the brilliant voters of Connecticut reelected Lieberman, any Dem who has genuinely believed that e would stick with the Party is a moron. Lieberman represents the right wing government of the State of Israel, and nobody else. He will do everything he can to keep the U.S. mired down in that part of the world, and he will try his damnedest to get the U. S. to attack Iran. Anyone with at least 2 brain cells know this to be true, and anyone with a modicum of integrity will acknowledge the same.

The problem, of course, is that Israel's current policies of agression are very bad for Israel, as well as for the U.S. Lieberman is no friend of America - in fact, he is a dangerous, de facto foreign agent entrenched in the Congress of the U.S., with the potential to do our nation very real harm.

He should be impeached, tried and removed from office.

"Since the brilliant voters of Connecticut reelected Lieberman..." It was CT Republicans who helped re-elect Leiberman. Their candidate was polling in single digits and they were encouraged to cross over and help Leiberman stay in office.

Not to disagree, or anything, but on what grounds can he be impeached and tried? His support for A I Pac irks knowledgeable voters, but the fact of the matter is, the majority of the electorate probably doesn't know what A I Pac is. Thanks to the years of propaganda on the issue, most people don't realize that Israel is not under much of a threat to its existence (with the sixth largest nuclear arsenal in the world). And peace and stability in the Mid-East can best be achieved by adhering to international law and the already agreed-upon dual state.

The fact that Lieberman didn't get elected may prove that God cares about America. Sadly enough, Bush did get elected but you count small miracles when you are up to your *** in alligators.

Even if I agreed with Lieberman's stands on issues---which I don't, most of the time---I'd still detest him, because of his irritating namby-pamby voice. As I said to my children when they were young, "Stop whining right now!"

Ohmigod. That voice nearly drove me crazy during the Ct Sen elections!

The most seats that the democrats will pick will be 8, because it looks like they will not beat collins in Maine, and Gordon Smith in Oregon is a toss up right now in order to beat him.

Ok Dem pick seats on Colorado
Alaska
Kentuky with Mcconell out :)
Minnesota
MISS
New Hampshire
New mexico
Virginia
That is the 8 seats that the democrats will pick still early, but according to polls that is what is happening right now. I am in shock that Oregon and Maine will not throw out Gordon Smith and Susan Collins out. There is a chance that we can get the 60 votes in the senate without the need of Lieberman, but there are many conservative democrats senators like Nelson in Nebraska that will vote against the party priorities.

Honestly, doesn't the namby-pamby tone of these eminences gris just make you want to puke?

We don't have a veto-proof majority of Dems in the Senate.

If any meaningful legislation is voted on between now and next January 20th that relates to national security, LIEberman will side with the Rethugs anyway.

CUT HIM LOOSE NOW!

That would cause the democrats to lose Majority in the Senate. They would no longer be able to set the agenda. It would be very bad. Very very bad! Let the slimeball sit on his committee. It's only a little bit longer!

Let the republicans have him! I hope Connecticut kicks him out of office and gets him out of our hair!!!

If the Democrats elect a large majority in the Senate, Lieberman will have to switch parties to retain any type of post. They'll certainly get rid of him if they don't need him. He's simply bitter about the 2006 primary. Obama even campaigned for him. What an ingrate.

Angry Joe seems to be in denial. The US invasion of Iraq was a huge gift to Iran.

Is Lieberman running for the Knesset?

Did anyone see Recount on HBO? Lieberman's role in handing the 2000 election over to Bush over the issue of military ballots is absolutely shocking. And that's when he was the Democrat VP candidate. Look at him now. A man who lives in fear of his own shadow, who has suckered up to McBush, while stoking the fires of religious hatred and pre-emptive war. Pitiful.

LIEbermann lost his Dem primary and only won the seat over Lemont because we had no good republician running....the republician didn't even run ads, the party figured let's just vote for Liebermann since the republician would of surely lost. HE WON FROM REPUBLICIAN votes NOT DEMOCRATS.....he is hated in CT

uh, the DEMS THEMSELVES had AMPLE OPPORTUNITY to close down on Joe in the last election..The Dems ALLOWED GOPers as well as OLD DEMS to put Joe back in...SUCH LOYALTY GETS WHAT IT DESERVES, tragic for the rest of us but then, WE TOO FAILED for should have ramped it up and made it known such as Joe was NOT tolerable !!!! BTW, remember, Obama did as party asked, campaigned FOR JOE, the CLintons and Dodd and others as well showed LOYALTY TO FELLOW SENATE COLLEGUE RATHER THAN WHAT WAS TRULY BEST FOR HONEST REPRESENTATION OF THE CITIZENRY AND CITIZENRY ACTUAL CONCERNS !!!
Joe is in HIS last "throes", will serve out his term (unless a credible RECALL MOUNTED...) and then become a lobbiest, continue his association with PNAC and its crew and collect his tax funded pension. HURUMPH...hard lesson and here's hoping LEARNED !!!!
